What & why

Archiving a cloud workspace used to delete its box immediately, and the desktop had no way back. Now archive stops the box and keeps it for 7 days. Unarchive brings the same box back with its disk and terminal sessions. After 7 days the box is deleted, and unarchive gives the same row a fresh box from its environment. The record (name, timeline, comments, tasks, sharing) is the same row either way.

Screenshots of every step, from the real app: https://app.superset.sh/page/archiving-cloud-workspaces-c8wn33

Server

  • cloudWorkspace.delete stops the box, marks the row archived, and queues a reap job 7 days out (/api/cloud-workspaces/reap, QStash delay, within every plan's limit). The job deletes the box only if the row is still archived from that archive (deletedAt must match), so archive → unarchive → archive can't reap early. If queueing fails, the box is deleted at once. The procedure keeps its delete name because the CLI, SDK and MCP call it.
  • cloudWorkspace.unarchive: if the stopped box still exists, the row goes straight back to ready and the existing wake path resumes it on open. Otherwise the row goes to provisioning under a new box name (nextSandboxNameFor). Vercel answers 409 image_not_ready for a deleted box's name for a few minutes, and the provision job now reads the name from the row.
  • jobs.ts holds the QStash-or-in-process publisher that provision and reap now share.
  • New unarchived activity event.

Desktop

  • Archive happens at once, with no confirm, from the sidebar hover icon, the context menu, the details ⋯ menu and ⌘⇧⌫. Cloud targets of the delete intent are archived by DeleteWorkspaceMount, and local workspaces keep their dialog.
  • Optimistic: moveCloudWorkspaceRow moves the row between the active and archived caches (and patches get) before the server answers, and rolls back with a toast on error.
  • Archived workspace UI: an archived screen on the workspace route (name, "Archived · time", Unarchive), an archive icon after the details title, grayed names with an archive icon and an undo on hover in the list, and Unarchive in the details actions and ⋯ menu. Share and ⋯ stay visible while archived.
  • The provisioning timer counts from when this session first sees the workspace provisioning (provisioningSince), not from createdAt.
  • Translations for all locales.

Migration

0133_cloud_workspace_unarchived_event.sql is a single ALTER TYPE "cloud_workspace_activity_event" ADD VALUE 'unarchived'. It locks only the enum type and touches no table, so it neither rewrites nor scans anything. Nothing in this release uses the value inside the migration transaction. Generated by drizzle-kit on top of main's 0132.

How I tested it

Driven with real clicks over CDP in this branch's dev app, against a local API and real Vercel boxes (dev Neon branch, a personal environment with no secrets):

  • Every archive entry point archives at once, the row leaves the sidebar, and the archived screen shows immediately and stays (sampled for 4 s).
  • Grace resume: I wrote a marker file into the box, archived, and unarchived 13 s later. The server went deleted → ready with no reprovision, the marker read back, and the terminal showed "Session Contents Restored".
  • Reap: with a 60 s window, the box was stopped at +30 s and gone at +60 s. Unarchive afterwards provisioned a fresh box (ready in ≈10 s, timer started at 0:03).
  • Re-ran archive → details → Unarchive (resume) → sidebar archive after rebasing onto Every screen draws its own headers; the collapsed sidebar keeps the window controls in one band #7964.
  • Timeline shows "unarchived the workspace" entries.
  • tsc clean for desktop, api, trpc, db and ui, and mobile via turbo. biome check and sherif are clean, check:i18n passes, and i18n tests plus 914 desktop tests in the touched areas pass.

Not verified: the QStash-delivered reap in production. Locally the job runs on an in-process timer. After deploy: archive a workspace, confirm a QStash message is scheduled for +7 days, and confirm the box is stopped, not deleted.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs

Summary by cubic

Archiving a cloud workspace now stops its box and keeps it for 7 days instead of deleting it on the spot, and adds unarchive, which resumes the same box with its disk and terminal sessions. After 7 days the box is deleted, and unarchive provisions a fresh box from the environment.

Server

  • cloudWorkspace.delete stops the box, marks the row archived, and queues a reap job 7 days out via QStash (or in-process on a local API).
  • cloudWorkspace.unarchive resumes the stopped box when it still exists, otherwise provisions a fresh box under a new sandbox name.
  • The reap job only deletes the box if the row is still archived from that same archive, so archive → unarchive → archive can't reap early.
  • Migration 0133 adds the unarchived activity event via ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE.

Desktop

  • Archive triggers immediately from the sidebar, context menu, details menu, and ⌘⇧⌫, with no confirmation.
  • Rows move between the active and archived caches optimistically, rolling back with a toast on error.
  • Archived workspaces show an archived screen with Unarchive, grayed list names with an undo on hover, and Unarchive in the details menu.
  • The provisioning timer counts from when the session first sees the workspace provisioning instead of from createdAt.
  • Czech and Turkish translations for the new archive strings were corrected.

Written for commit c4f0bbf. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cloud workspaces can be archived and unarchived from the workspace list, sidebar, and workspace details.
    • Archived workspaces show their status and archive time, and workspace activity records when they’re unarchived.
    • Unarchiving restores an existing workspace when possible or restarts provisioning. Archived workspaces are scheduled for cleanup after seven days.
    • Archive and unarchive actions are available in supported languages.

…narchive them

Archiving a cloud workspace used to delete its box on the spot. Now it
stops the box and keeps it for 7 days, so unarchive can bring the same
box back with its disk and sessions. After 7 days the box is deleted and
unarchive gives the same row a fresh box from its environment.

Server
- cloudWorkspace.delete stops the box and queues a delayed reap job
(/api/cloud-workspaces/reap, QStash, 7 days). The job only deletes the
box if the row is still archived from that same archive, so
archive -> unarchive -> archive can't reap early.
- cloudWorkspace.unarchive resumes the stopped box when it still exists,
otherwise provisions a fresh one under a new name (Vercel refuses a
deleted box's name for a few minutes).
- Provision and reap share one job publisher (QStash, or in-process on a
  local API).
- New "unarchived" activity event (migration 0133, ALTER TYPE ADD VALUE).

Desktop
- Archive happens at once from every entry point (sidebar icon, context
menu, details menu, close-workspace hotkey), with no confirm.
- Archive and unarchive update the list caches optimistically.
- Archived workspaces: archived screen on the workspace route, archive
icon after the details title, grayed names and an undo on hover in the
list, Unarchive in the details actions and menu.
- The provisioning timer counts from when the session first sees the
workspace provisioning, so an unarchived workspace doesn't open on
  "taking longer than usual".

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds cloud workspace archiving, delayed sandbox reaping, and unarchiving. It updates desktop archive controls, archived workspace views, provisioning timers, activity events, and translations.

Changes

Cloud workspace lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Archive, reap, and unarchive lifecycle
apps/api/src/app/api/cloud-workspaces/reap/route.ts, packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/*, packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/*, packages/trpc/package.json
The API validates scheduled reap requests. The router archives Vercel workspaces, queues reaping after seven days, and supports unarchiving. Shared job publishing handles local execution and QStash delivery.
Optimistic archive and restore updates
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/hooks/*CloudWorkspace/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/utils/{moveCloudWorkspaceRow,provisioningSince}/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/commandPalette/ui/DeleteWorkspaceMount/*
Mutation hooks move cached rows between active and archived lists and restore cached data on errors. The command palette archives matching cloud workspaces.
Archive and unarchive controls
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/CloudWorkspacesList/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/DashboardSidebar/components/DashboardSidebarCloudSection/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/cloud-workspaces/$workspaceId/components/CloudWorkspaceRecord*
The workspace list, sidebar, and record view provide archive or unarchive actions. Archived list rows show an unarchive control when one is available.
Archived workspace views
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/CloudWorkspaceStatus/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/cloud-workspaces/$workspaceId/components/CloudWorkspaceRecordView/components/*
The workspace route queries and displays archived workspaces with an unarchive action. Headers and status indicators show archived state. Sharing remains available for archived records, and provisioning elapsed time uses a per-workspace timer.
Unarchive activity and translations
packages/db/drizzle/*, packages/db/src/schema/enums.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/cloud-workspaces/$workspaceId/{types.ts,utils/toTimelineEntries/*,components/CloudWorkspaceRecordView/components/CloudWorkspaceTimeline/*}, packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
The activity schema and timeline support unarchive events. Locale catalogs add archive, unarchive, archived-time, and activity strings.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c4f0b

A malformed reap payload that passes signature verification would cause an unhandled server error and QStash retries instead of a clean 400. This is a narrow, low-impact edge case with a one-line fix. It is fine to merge with this noted or fixed first.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f9f76

Authentication and workspace-access checks remain in place, but restoration and cleanup are not coordinated across the database and sandbox provider. Concurrent operations can destroy a restored disk or associate a workspace with an obsolete sandbox. Interrupted scheduling can also leave archived data without its intended cleanup job.

Retained concerns

  • High · reliability · inferred: Cleanup can delete a successfully restored sandbox. Reap checks the archived timestamp, then performs provider deletion separately; unarchive can confirm existence and transition the same row to ready between those operations. The queue-failure fallback similarly deletes without rechecking restoration. Provider deletion removes orphan snapshots too, making this an irreversible recovery failure. Timestamp matching protects completed archive cycles, but not an already-authorized deletion racing restoration.
  • Medium · architecture · inferred: Restoration introduces multiple sandbox generations for one row, but provisioning completion remains fenced only by provisioning status. An old provision attempt can span archive and fresh-box restoration, then overwrite the replacement sandbox ID when it completes. A competing replacement attempt can lose the ready transition and leave its sandbox running because cleanup only handles a currently deleted row. This weakens resource ownership and failure containment; the supplied base-change summary shows replacement naming is new.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Archive commits the deleted state before inserting activity and publishing cleanup. If activity insertion fails or execution stops before publication, the preserved disk has no reap job from this operation. Retrying archive cannot repair publication because deleted is not an accepted source state. The immediate-deletion fallback covers publisher rejection, not this earlier gap. An independent recovery mechanism was not established, so the intended seven-day retention limit is not guaranteed by the reviewed flow.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Ordinary callers can initiate the reviewed lifecycle operations only for workspaces allowed by organization membership and visibility. The detached worker exercises provider deletion authority using database-derived identity. A principal able to submit valid signed jobs could target matching archived Vercel rows; the payload does not directly select an arbitrary sandbox or authorize an active row.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure paths are concurrent authorized lifecycle operations and partial execution, rather than an established authentication bypass: cleanup can race restoration, stale provisioning can reclaim a replacement generation, and interrupted publication can extend archived-data retention. The demonstrated concurrency effects are bounded to the affected workspace and its sandbox generations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The reap handler verifies the raw body and exact destination URL before parsing or execution. Missing or invalid signatures fail closed outside development. User mutations retain JWT or session authentication, organization membership, cloud-access, and visibility checks; explicit JWT rejections are not converted into session fallback.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Timestamp matching skips jobs for completed unarchive or later archive cycles, and deletion treats an already-missing sandbox as complete. These are useful repetition controls, but neither provides exclusive ownership across validation, restoration, and external destruction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Introduce a recoverable, generation-fenced lifecycle protocol. Cleanup should exclusively claim the archive generation before destruction, restoration should respect that claim, and provision completion or failure should compare the expected sandbox generation as well as status.
  • proposed — Persist cleanup and provisioning intent atomically with state changes, then publish through retryable delivery or reconcile unfulfilled intent. Activity insertion should not determine whether retained data receives cleanup, and recovery should remain possible after an interrupted request.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return 400 when the body is not valid JSON.

JSON.parse(body) throws on malformed JSON. The route then returns an unhandled 500 instead of the 400 path. QStash treats a 500 as a failure and retries the message twice with the same body. Wrap the parse so malformed input goes to the same 400 response.
