Summary

  • Mobile cloud workspaces now open the way desktop's do: the sandbox is addressed with access({ wake: false }) (~0.45s, even when the box is stopped), and the wake runs alongside it. Before, mobile only minted with wake: true, so every open waited out the whole wake (1.7–2.2s on a running box, a full resume on a stopped one).
  • Mobile's "Last updated" sort uses desktop's lastActivityAt-based last-active ranking, through a shared @superset/shared/workspace-activity helper.

How it works

  • useSandboxAccess runs two queries. The address query (wake: false) drives the target. The wake query starts once the address has landed, re-wakes every 10 min and on foreground, and writes its grant (which can be a new domain) back into the address query. It waits for the address because the API client's httpBatchLink would otherwise return both calls in one response.
  • sandbox-access: an address that was requested before a wake landed can't overwrite the wake's newer URL.
  • WorkspaceScreen shows desktop's "This cloud workspace is waking up…" while the box is being woken. When the wake lands it refetches terminals and redials. The remembered tab is kept while the terminal list is failing, and a failing cloud list shows a spinner instead of "No sessions yet".

Verified

On the iOS sim against prod (videos and screenshots: https://app.superset.sh/page/pr-7889-mobile-cloud-open-109u0m):

  • Stopped box: the full-screen wait ends at ~1.8s; the waking banner shows until the box is up; the session is live at ~24s.
  • Running box: live at 2.9s from tap (dev build).
  • bun run lint, turbo typecheck (mobile, desktop, shared), and mobile and shared tests are green.

Known limitations

  • After a stopped box wakes, host-service answers terminal.list before resumeCrashedAgentSessions has recreated the agents (under new terminal ids). That leaves ~5s of "No sessions yet". It needs a fix on the server.
  • Box 4a35f072 fails every wake with sandbox.setEnvironment answered 401. That is unrelated to this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Workspace ordering by recent activity now uses a consistent activity timestamp across desktop and mobile, with a fallback when activity time is unavailable.
    • Cloud workspaces can show host availability and provisioning status before workspace details finish loading.
    • Terminal selection responds to available terminal data while loading, then reconciles the selection when the host responds.
    • Cloud workspaces display a wake-up message while starting or reconnecting, then refresh workspace and terminal data and retry the connection when waking finishes.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Served-query errors no longer incorrectly mark a cloud sandbox as unreachable when a host is available.

Mobile gated the whole workspace screen on host-service confirming the
sandbox's workspace row before showing anything, so opening any cloud
workspace flashed the full "Starting workspace" screen even when the
sandbox was already warm, and stayed on it the whole time a stopped
sandbox took to wake.

Desktop never waits for that confirmation: it addresses a cloud
workspace at its ticketed URL as soon as it has one and mounts the
workspace UI immediately, surfacing connection state as a banner rather
than a gate. Port that here:

- useWorkspaceHost: derive `host` from the sandbox access ticket
instead of from host-service's own workspace.list confirmation, so
terminals can be requested from the same address without an extra
  round trip.
- WorkspaceScreen: trust the remembered/deep-linked terminal tab as
soon as the host is addressed, even before the terminal list has
answered, and only fall back to strict matching once it has. The
full-screen provisioning state now only covers "not addressed yet"
(still provisioning, or the ticket itself is failing); everything
after that is the terminal's own connecting/reconnecting banner.
Mobile's "Last updated" sort read a workspace's own `updatedAt` (which
moves on renames/metadata writes) maxed against its live terminal
timestamps. Desktop's sidebar instead ranks by `lastActivityAt`, which
the host stamps only on real agent activity, falling back to
`updatedAt` for rows from a host that predates the column — so
housekeeping never jumps a workspace to the top.

Extract that ranking (`getWorkspaceActivityTime`/`toTime`) out of
desktop's sidebar sort into `@superset/shared/workspace-activity`, keep
desktop on the shared implementation, and use it for mobile's "Last
updated" ranking in Home and Search, on top of the existing live
terminal-timestamp boost.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request moves workspace activity timestamp handling into a shared package and uses it for desktop and mobile sorting. It also changes mobile sandbox access, cloud host availability, terminal selection and actions, and workspace loading and rendering states.

Changes

Workspace activity timestamps

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared activity timestamp helper
packages/shared/src/workspace-activity.ts, packages/shared/src/workspace-activity.test.ts, packages/shared/package.json
The shared package exports timestamp conversion and activity-time helpers. Tests cover lastActivityAt precedence and fallback to updatedAt.
Sorting integrations
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/DashboardSidebar/utils/sortDashboardSidebarProjects/*, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/(home)/home/HomeScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/(home)/search/SearchScreen.tsx
Desktop and mobile sorting use the shared helper for updated-time sorting. The desktop helper implementation, re-export, and tests are removed.

Mobile cloud workspace handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sandbox address and wake operations
apps/mobile/lib/sandbox-access/*, apps/mobile/hooks/useSandboxAccess/useSandboxAccess.ts
Sandbox access now supports separate address-only and waking grants. The hook acquires an address before starting the wake query and updates the address cache with wake responses.
Host availability and workspace terminal state
apps/mobile/hooks/useWorkspaceHost/useWorkspaceHost.ts, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/(home)/home/hooks/useHostTerminals/useHostTerminals.ts, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/WorkspaceScreen/WorkspaceScreen.tsx
The host hook exposes sandbox waking state and synthesizes a host when a sandbox target exists. The workspace screen updates terminal selection and actions, wake-up messaging, provisioning UI, and session-tab visibility based on host and query state. The host-terminal hook reports query errors.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7c475

Cloud workspaces can take longer to wake or remain on a waking screen without the expected recovery or retry path. Resolve those connection issues before merging; activity ranking and remembered-tab issues also remain.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7c475

Server-issued access still protects cloud workspace addressing, but the new optimistic terminal flow can use and remember a session ID before it is confirmed. A failed initial sandbox wake can also leave the screen showing a wake-up state instead of its retry state. The downstream terminal authorization check remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Before terminal-list confirmation, an unvalidated session ID can be used for a terminal connection and replace the device's remembered session ID. Whether the terminal service independently rejects a session outside the requested workspace remains unverified.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: An initial sandbox wake failure can retain an address-backed host and a waking state, leaving a failed terminal load on the spinner path rather than the no-host retry path. This weakens recovery from a partial connection failure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated optimistic path is on the authenticated mobile workspace screen and its device-local remembered-tab state. Ticket binding limits the demonstrated sandbox address scope; terminal-session ownership enforcement downstream has not been established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A supplied deep-link terminal ID can reach the terminal WebSocket URL before list validation and can replace the remembered ID. This establishes an earlier client-side use path, not a verified ability to access another workspace's terminal.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Cloud access issuance checks entitlement and organization membership, and the gate binds the resulting ticket to the requested sandbox URL. Desktop already uses ticketed addressing without waiting for workspace-list confirmation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The initial-wake error path does not reach the existing no-host retry presentation when an address is already available, reducing failure visibility and recovery control for that partial transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Confirm that the terminal connection enforces terminal-to-workspace ownership independently of client selection, and keep unconfirmed IDs from replacing a confirmed remembered session.

Keep a visible failure state when the sandbox has an address but does not answer.

When a sandbox target exists, host makes sandboxUnreachable false even if served.isError is true. For a workspace with no known terminal ID, WorkspaceScreen cannot mount TerminalWebView to show a connection error. It also skips CloudWorkspaceProvisioningState because host exists. The screen then shows a spinner or “No sessions yet” instead of an unreachable state with retry. Preserve the request failure separately from host availability, and show it when no terminal can report the failure.

Do not remember a terminal ID before the list confirms it.

When a deep link supplies an invalid tab before terminals load, this branch selects that ID. The effect at Lines 202–204 then overwrites the previously remembered tab. If the user leaves before the list arrives, row validation cannot repair the saved preference. Keep the optimistic terminal selection, but write to the last-session store only after the selected ID matches a terminal row.

Honor all declared lastActivityAt values.

WorkspaceActivityFields permits Date and string values. When a caller passes either value, getWorkspaceActivityTime skips it and falls back to updatedAt, which can produce the wrong activity order. Convert the value with toTime before falling back.

Mobile minted sandbox access only with wake: true, so opening a cloud
workspace still waited on the whole wake (1.7-2.2 s warm, a full resume
cold). Address with wake: false and run the wake beside it, handing its
possibly-moved address back. The wake starts once the address has landed
because the API client batches same-tick calls into one response.

Show desktop's waking copy while the sandbox wakes, refetch terminals and
redial when it lands, keep the remembered tab while the terminal list is
failing, and drop a one-use re-export on desktop.

Start waking without waiting for the address response.

The wake query stays disabled until address.data exists. A slow address request therefore delays the wake by its full duration. This defeats the PR’s stated goal of starting the wake alongside address acquisition. Schedule the requests independently while keeping the wake request from batching with and delaying the address response.

Gate the synthesized host with the combined sandbox error.

On a first wake failure, address.isError is false, wake.isError is true, and wake.data is undefined. The current hook reports only address.isError, so the pre-host sandboxUnreachable value is false. useWorkspaceHost then creates host from sandbox, and !host && sandboxUnreachable remains false because host already exists. The workspace skips its retry fallback.

Report the wake error only when no wake data exists. Then use that raw combined error before creating host. Include wake.isError in the memo dependencies. Keep the wake.data === undefined condition so a later refetch failure with cached wake data does not remove the usable host.

In @apps/mobile/hooks/useSandboxAccess/useSandboxAccess.ts around lines 115 -
119, Update useSandboxAccess to report an error when address.isError or
wake.isError with no wake data, and include wake.isError in the memo
dependencies; retain the no-wake-data condition so cached wake data remains
usable. In useWorkspaceHost, prevent creating the sandbox-derived host when
sandboxUnreachable is true, and return sandboxUnreachable directly so the retry
fallback can run.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Track completion of each wake, not the presence of cached wake data.

After one successful wake, wake.data remains defined during later wake requests. isWaking stays false. On foreground resume, the wasWaking effect in WorkspaceScreen therefore does not invalidate host queries or call terminalRef.current?.retry() when the wake returns a new address. Track the current wake cycle so its completion triggers that recovery path even when prior wake data exists. TanStack Query permits a query to retain data while it refetches. (tanstack.com)

In @apps/mobile/hooks/useSandboxAccess/useSandboxAccess.ts at line 116, Update
the isWaking calculation in useSandboxAccess to track the current wake request’s
fetching state rather than whether wake.data is undefined. Preserve the ready
guard so each wake cycle, including refetches with cached data, triggers
WorkspaceScreen’s recovery path when it completes.

Only the page creator can stop or add listening agents. On focus change also
saves on window blur, and Auto Save pauses on conflicts. Taken-down pages do
not unfurl. Model picker coverage matches agent-models.ts.
