Follow-up to #7947. The first production run at 23:00Z got HTTP 524 from Cloudflare at ~2m09s: api.superset.sh's origin timeout is ~100s, so a 240s run never answers in time. QStash retried three times and each retry started another run beside the ones still executing on Vercel — four overlapping passes over the same candidate lists, and the delivery ends in the DLQ every hour.

The run budget drops to 60s. Every processed row is already written and the schedule is hourly, so the backlog drains over a few runs (the first run suspended 1,411 installations and revoked 288 Linear connections before the cut-off).

Same constraint applies to any QStash job on api.superset.sh that runs longer than ~100s.

Summary by cubic

Fixes the suspend cron delivery failure on api.superset.sh by cutting the run budget from 240s to 60s. The first production run got HTTP 524 from Cloudflare at ~2m09s (origin timeout is ~100s), and QStash's three retries each started a fresh run alongside the still-running ones — up to four overlapping passes over the same candidate lists, ending in the DLQ every hour.

The 60s budget gets the summary out before Cloudflare gives up. Since every processed row is already written and the cron is hourly, the backlog drains over a few runs — the first run suspended 1,411 installations and revoked 288 Linear connections before the cutoff. Any other QStash job on api.superset.sh running longer than ~100s has the same constraint.

Written for commit eb310fe. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Suspension processing now runs within a shorter time window. Any remaining items are handled in subsequent runs.

…meout

The first production run got a 524 at two minutes and QStash retried it three
times, each retry starting a fresh run beside the ones still executing. A 60s
budget returns the summary before Cloudflare gives up; the hourly schedule
drains the backlog over a few runs instead.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The suspension job’s shared run budget decreases from 240,000 ms to 60,000 ms. The comment describes Cloudflare 524 responses, overlapping QStash retries, and processing across runs.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~5 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to eb310

The shorter budget reduces timeout exposure, but does not strictly bound execution. Slow operations can still delay the response and permit overlapping retries; merge with awareness of this remaining limitation or enforce the deadline throughout the job.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to eb310

The shorter budget reduces normal timeout and overlapping-retry exposure without changing authentication or provider authority. Remaining uncertainty concerns backlog-drain capacity and slow operations that can outlive the budget, rather than a demonstrated new authorization bypass.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The smaller processing window can extend the interval before policy-ineligible installations are suspended and Linear credentials are revoked. Successful rows leave the candidate lists, allowing a finite backlog to drain, but completion under sustained arrivals is not established without production capacity evidence. This is a conditional enforcement-delay risk, not an observed unauthorized-access finding.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A legitimate job invocation selects policy-ineligible installations and Linear connections across organizations in the connected database, rather than accepting a request-supplied tenant target. This cross-organization authority already exists and is unchanged by the budget adjustment.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected change does not establish a new attacker-controlled path to suspension or revocation. The supported security concern is conditional enforcement delay from reduced processing capacity; no actual exploitation or production enforcement lapse was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Outside development mode, the handler verifies the QStash signature against the request body and configured exact endpoint URL before selecting candidates or invoking privileged operations. The development bypass and signing-key usage predate this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Unchanged recovery mechanisms support repeated processing: GitHub successful suspension updates local state, resume publication failures leave rows eligible for later attempts, and Linear accepts already-revoked responses before requesting local cleanup. External and database operations remain separate, so interruption can leave temporary divergence and overlapping runs can repeat work. Full transactional cleanup was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Measure pending-candidate age and completed work per run to validate the new enforcement capacity. Deadline-aware operation bounds and concurrency-safe job coordination could further contain slow-call retries, while preserving retryable state after partial provider success.

Bind all awaited work to the remaining deadline.

The deadline check runs only at loop entry. If appPlacedSuspension or organizationSyncsNow runs past the deadline, the route can still publish a backfill or start revokeLinearConnection. The Linear requests have fixed 10-second limits, but those limits are not tied to the remaining budget. The GitHub and database operations receive no deadline signal.

Pass a remaining-time signal where supported, and check the deadline before starting each subsequent side effect.
