What changes

No app-wide top bar (v2). Each screen draws its own header rows through PageHeader (48px, start slot, drag area, end slot). The old TopBar stays only on the v1 screens #7859 deletes.

The sidebar can't close, only collapse to its 52px rail. A persisted closed state migrates to the rail (store v3). ⌘B and the palette's "Toggle left sidebar" collapse and expand.

Collapsed = one band, like production. While the rail shows, the leftmost header renders the window controls (traffic-light space, sidebar toggle, back/forward, ports, offline). Every top-row header and the rail's top strip share the tab bar's color, so the macOS buttons sit in a continuous bar. Panes that aren't leftmost opt out with WindowChromeScope.

Controls don't move between states. They're pinned 7pt from the window top in a 32pt row, in the sidebar header and in WindowChrome alike. That centers them on the macOS buttons, which sit at 22.75pt (measured from a real window capture on macOS 26). Canary had them 1pt low, and the workspace tab bar moved them 4.5pt when collapsed.

Record pages (task, project, cloud workspace) use RecordLayout: the main and side columns each have a header, so the divider runs unbroken. A page without side actions (project) lets its side column run to the top.

Also

  • Loading and not-found screens keep a header (StateScreenShell), so a closed sidebar never strands you without a toggle.
  • Settings' top strip became its sidebar's header.
  • Back/forward shortcuts and mouse side-buttons moved into useHistoryNavigationShortcuts, so they work while the buttons are unmounted.
  • PortsDropdown and RightSidebarToggle moved out of TopBar/.
  • Automations, Pages and Plugins titles got 16px of room under the header.

Cloud workspaces

  • Share sits before the presence stack.
  • AvatarStack takes a surface and rings each avatar in it.
  • The creator counts as present; last seen falls back to created_at.
  • The stack hides while the viewer is alone.

Verified (dev app, CDP)

  • 36 screen × sidebar-state combinations, plus Settings, covering every dashboard route, the missing-task screen, and the PR detail with its list hidden. The toggle, back and forward icons sit at identical positions (x 88/122/150, center y 23) in both states, pixel-checked against the Canary capture. Every header has a drag area, and no clickable control sits inside a drag region.
  • Narrow window (800px): record headers merge onto one row and stay pinned while scrolling.
  • Checks: repo lint, typecheck (42/42), i18n, and 6,287 renderer tests pass.

Known, not from this PR

Summary by cubic

Removes the app-wide top bar on v2 screens; each screen now draws its own 48px header row via PageHeader, and the old TopBar stays only on the v1 screens. The sidebar can no longer close, only collapse to a 52px rail, with persisted closed state migrating to the rail.

Window chrome

  • While the rail shows, the leftmost header renders the window controls (traffic-light space, sidebar toggle, back/forward, ports, offline); all top-row headers and the rail's top strip share one band so the macOS buttons sit in a continuous bar. Non-leftmost panes opt out via WindowChromeScope.
  • Controls are pinned 7pt from the window top in a 32pt row in both states, so they stay centered on the macOS buttons and don't shift between expanded and collapsed.
  • PageHeader accepts children for rows that lay out their own drag area; Tasks, New Workspace, and page detail headers use it, and WindowChrome sits only in PageHeader and the pane tab bar's leading slot.
  • Back/forward hotkeys and mouse side-buttons moved into useHistoryNavigationShortcuts so they work even when the buttons are unmounted.

Record pages and cloud workspaces

  • Record pages (task, project, cloud workspace) use RecordLayout: main and side columns each have a header so the divider runs unbroken; pages without side actions let the side column run to the top.
  • Loading and not-found screens keep a header via StateScreenShell, so a collapsed sidebar never strands the user without a toggle.
  • Cloud workspaces: share sits before the presence stack, AvatarStack takes a surface for avatar rings, and the presence stack counts the creator as present (last seen falls back to created_at) and hides while the viewer is alone.

…indow controls in one band

The app-wide TopBar is gone for v2 (it stays only on the v1 screens #7859 deletes). Each
screen's headers are PageHeader rows, 48px, with a start slot, a drag area and an end slot.
The sidebar can no longer close, only collapse to its 52px rail; a persisted closed state
migrates to the rail.

While the rail shows, the window controls (traffic-light space, sidebar toggle, back/forward,
ports, offline) render inside the leftmost PageHeader, and every top-row header plus the rail's
top strip share one band, so the macOS buttons sit in a continuous bar as they did under the
old top bar. Panes that are not leftmost opt out with WindowChromeScope. The controls are pinned
7pt from the window top in a 32pt row in both states, which centers them on the macOS buttons
(22.75pt, measured from a real window capture) and removes the shift between expanded and
collapsed.

Record pages (task, project, cloud workspace) use RecordLayout: the main column and the side
column each have a header, so the divider runs unbroken; a page with no side actions lets its
side column run to the top. Loading and not-found screens keep a header through
StateScreenShell. Settings' top strip became its sidebar's header. Back/forward shortcuts and
mouse buttons moved into useHistoryNavigationShortcuts so they work wherever the buttons are.

Cloud workspaces: Share sits before the presence stack; AvatarStack takes a surface and rings
each avatar in it; the creator counts as present (last seen falls back to created_at); the stack
hides while the viewer is alone.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6e967

The gap between controls in the wide Tasks header may not drag the window. This is a narrow cosmetic and usability issue that is safe to fix before or shortly after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6e967

The changes affect shared screen layout, saved sidebar behavior, and workspace-presence data. The inspected paths retain existing permission checks, and no introduced security defect was established. Some recovery behavior and downstream data delivery remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Presence results contain member identifiers, names, images, and timestamps. They feed workspace listing and an organization-labelled realtime update. The realtime sender authenticates with a service secret, but recipient-side filtering was not inspected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workspace list requires cloud access and organization membership, restricts rows to the requested organization, and applies creator-or-organization visibility before passing workspace IDs to the presence helper. Creator profile fields are also returned separately in each listed workspace.
  • inferred — The inspected workspace-header relocation does not add creation or tool authority: prompt-history selection updates the draft, while submission remains owned by the existing creation hook with organization, project, and host checks. Backend creation authorization was outside this probe.

🧹 Preview Cleanup Complete

The following preview resources have been cleaned up:

  • ✅ Neon database branch

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉

PageHeader takes children for a row that lays out its own drag area (the shared page title
bar). The Tasks toolbar keeps its two-row narrow layout through contentClassName; New
Workspace's settings and history buttons move into its header, replacing the drag overlay
and the separate window-controls box. WindowChrome is now placed only by PageHeader and the
pane tab bar's leading slot.

Team: please test this in canary before it goes into a release. Hold off on cutting a versioned release that includes it until it's had some canary time.

This PR replaces the app-wide top bar with per-screen headers, so it touches the chrome of every desktop screen. What to check in canary:

  • Collapse and expand the left sidebar (⌘B or the toggle) on a few screens: Tasks, a task, Projects, a cloud workspace, Automations, Pages, Pull requests, and a workspace. The window buttons, sidebar toggle and back/forward should stay put. When collapsed, the top row should read as one band across the rail and the page.
  • Drag the window from empty header space on each of those, and make sure every header button still clicks.
  • Record pages (task, project, cloud workspace): the divider between the main column and the sidebar should run cleanly from top to bottom. Also try a narrow window.
  • Windows or Linux: this is untested. The window-control spacer and the app menu button moved.
  • Page zoom other than 100% (⌘+/⌘-): the controls should stay aligned with the macOS window buttons.
  • The left sidebar can no longer be fully hidden, only collapsed to the icon rail. If you relied on hiding it completely, say so.

Preserve the responsive drag spacer.

TasksTopBar sets PageHeader to h-auto and changes its content to a centered row at @4xl. PageHeader supplies drag h-full min-w-0 flex-1, but .drag only sets -webkit-app-region. The empty spacer can therefore have zero height in the wide layout, so the space between the controls may not drag the window.

The previous local spacer used hidden min-w-0 flex-1 self-stretch @4xl:block. Retain those responsive classes for this TasksTopBar layout through PageHeader's custom-children path or a drag-class override. Hide the spacer in the two-row layout and stretch it in the wide layout.

…side the window controls (#8002)

The Linux QA pass on #7964 found three issues. The window controls moved 44px when the sidebar
collapsed, because the app menu sat inside the expanded header but after the rail when
collapsed; it now owns the rail-width slot in both, so the toggle and back/forward start at the
same x. Settings had no app menu on Windows/Linux. And the record side header ran its primary
action under the window controls; the label now drops to its icon only when the header lacks
the room, measured by a container query, so macOS keeps the full label.
