fix(shared,host-service): constrain proxy/tunnel upstream before attaching the host secret (GHSA-8qrv-53x7-hh4p, GHSA-h894-rmgp-jv6m) - #7829
Conversation
…attaching the host secret
The sandbox gate resolved its upstream as `new URL(path + search, claims.target)`,
so a protocol-relative request path replaced the ticket's target outright and the
workspace host secret went out on the Authorization header to a host the caller
named. The tunnel client built its local URL by concatenating a relay-supplied
path onto the loopback origin, where a leading `@` turns that origin into userinfo
and HOST_SERVICE_SECRET follows to the relay's origin of choice.
Both are the same mistake in two dialects, so the guard is one shared module.
resolveUpstreamUrl refuses anything that is not origin-form and then re-checks the
resolved origin against the base, rather than trusting either style of URL
construction; isOriginFormTarget is the syntactic half, for the relay, which
forwards a target on instead of resolving it and whose hand-rolled `startsWith("//")`
check missed the tab- and newline-smuggled variants the URL parser strips back into
protocol-relative. Nothing is normalized: a target that tried to move the origin is
refused, and the gate refuses before it derives the secret at all.
The tunnel's WebSocket leg was not exploitable — assigning `.pathname` cannot move a
host — but goes through the same guard so the two legs cannot diverge.

Self-contained writeup of GHSA-8qrv-53x7-hh4p and GHSA-h894-rmgp-jv6m for the master tracker: verdicts, the attack, the before/after test output as captured, the shared guard and its call sites, and the residual risk — including that the advisory bodies themselves were unreadable from here.

The
Requestconstructor receives an absolute URL, but its parsedURL.pathnameis/x. The test therefore exercises ordinary forwarding, not an absolute-form request target. Scope Bun types to the test configuration.
The base configuration excludes DOM types, so "bun" loads Bun's fallback globals for every file in src, including the Worker. Bun's WebSocket.binaryType includes "nodebuffer", while the Cloudflare Worker declaration allows only "blob" | "arraybuffer". Keep the production configuration Worker-only and add "bun" only to a test-specific tsconfig for index.test.ts.
The root @types/bun dependency already resolves "bun". Response.webSocket remains available and is not hidden by this merge.

Summary
The sandbox gate built its upstream from the request path, so a
//path forwarded the workspace host secret to an arbitrary origin; the tunnel client could sendHOST_SERVICE_SECRETto a relay-selected origin. A bypassable relay-side check was also found.Fix (well-factored)
New shared
packages/shared/src/upstream-url.tsguard constrains the origin before the secret is attached; gate, tunnel client, and the relay's bespoke check all consolidated onto it.Proof
Gate exploit forwarded the real Bearer secret to
https://evil.examplepre-fix; blocked post-fix. Tests: gate 2 pass/5 fail → 8/0, tunnel 4 fail → 19/0, shared 1114 pass; typecheck 8/8; biome + sherif clean. One client-side reachability sub-claim is PARTIAL. Pre-existing unrelated failure verified on a clean tree.Write-up: https://app.superset.sh/page/p1-b-host-secret-disclosure-to-an-attacker-selecte-yhe08o

Squash-merge only (earlier commits held local repro artifacts, now untracked).
Summary by cubic
Fixes a host-secret disclosure where a crafted request target could move the upstream origin and carry the host secret with it, in the sandbox gate (GHSA-8qrv-53x7-hh4p) and the tunnel client (GHSA-h894-rmgp-jv6m).
new URL(path, claims.target), so a protocol-relative//path replaced the ticket target and sent the workspace secret to the attacker's host; the tunnel client concatenated a relay-supplied path onto the loopback origin, where a leading@turned that origin into userinfo andHOST_SERVICE_SECRETfollowed, past the relay'sstartsWith("//")check, which missed tab- and newline-smuggled protocol-relative forms.resolveUpstreamUrl/isOriginFormTargetinpackages/shared/src/upstream-url.ts, which refuse anything not in origin-form and re-check the resolved origin against the base before any secret is attached; refusing call sites return 400 instead of proxying.Written for commit b86505e. Summary will update on new commits.
