What & why

A delayed close/error callback from an old relay control connection could tear down terminal streams and HTTP exchanges after a replacement control connection was already open. Ignore that stale callback when a different open host control connection exists. Losing the current control connection still cleans up its streams.

Log every host control disconnect, including ordinary abnormal closes, with timestamps, close details, connection duration, and time since inbound traffic. This gives future diagnostics the timing needed to investigate the initial disconnect.

This fixes a confirmed reconnect race. It does not establish the cause of the original periodic remote-host drops reported to support.

How I tested it

  • Regression failed before the guard; passes with it. Covers delayed old close/error callbacks and current-control cleanup.
  • Relay and tunnel unit tests: 15 passed. Tunnel integration tests: 3 passed, including slow upgrades and retry after failures.
  • Full repository bun run lint and bun run typecheck passed (42 typecheck tasks). Changed-file Biome checks passed.
  • Drove the actual Electron desktop over CDP, using a real terminal/PTY and local relay. With controlled delayed old-control cleanup and an open replacement, guard disabled caused terminal socket closes and visible Reconnecting. Guard enabled caused zero terminal closes/reconnects and shell echo continued. Repeated the comparison twice. Temporary fault-injection hooks were removed.
  • Internal reproduction page with actual-app screenshots and measurements. This was controlled event ordering, not a spontaneous reproduction of the customer's five-minute cadence.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs (not a fork)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Active tunnel streams now remain open when an outdated host connection closes after a replacement connection is established. Closing the current host connection continues to close its associated streams.
  • Improvements
    • Connection close warnings now include additional details, such as connection duration, close information, and retry status, making tunnel interruptions easier to diagnose.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

HostTunnel now ignores close events from a host connection that is no longer current. TunnelClient tracks control-connection duration and logs structured details for every control-socket close.

Changes

Host connection teardown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guard host teardown against stale closes
apps/relay/src/host-tunnel.ts, apps/relay/src/host-tunnel.test.ts
handleGone returns when the closing connection is not the current open host. Tests cover delayed close and error events from an old host, and closing the current host.

Control connection close logging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and log control connection closes
packages/host-service/src/tunnel/tunnel-client.ts
TunnelClient records the control connection open time. Every control-socket close logs connection and close details, including connection duration, inbound-silence duration, and retry status when available. The handler resets the open-time value.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: saddlepaddle

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5bb30

The change is mergeable with a bounded test follow-up: add an active HTTP exchange to the stale-host regression test so it protects that behavior too.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5bb30

The reconnect guard reduces a confirmed stream-disruption race, and no new access path or confirmed security exposure was identified. Review is still warranted because overlapping connections and the exposure of expanded close logs are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A mistaken host-teardown decision can close streams and abort HTTP exchanges attached to the affected relay host. The inspected change does not establish broader tenant reach or a new caller privilege.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The host-service close handler passes the WebSocket event reason to operational logging on every close. Unlike the description field, that reason is not derived from the fixed shared close-code mapping; the previous handler also logged it for selected codes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The replacement guard improves failure containment for the tested delayed callback. Its reliance on open-socket enumeration leaves overlapping-socket ordering and recovery behavior unproven, rather than establishing a new security failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider an explicit replacement owner or generation and exercise callbacks with both hosts open, a replacement still connecting, and repeated close or error events.
  • proposed — Confirm who can access and retain control-close logs, and consider bounding or normalizing the remotely supplied reason before recording it.

Assert an active HTTP exchange in the stale-host test.

HostTunnel.proxyHttp creates a pending exchange, and handleGone aborts it through httpExchanges.abortAll() on the current-host path. This fixture creates only client and dial streams. The test would still pass if stale-host handling aborted the pending HTTP exchange before returning. Add a pending proxyHttp request and assert that it does not resolve with timeout after the old host closes and errors.

Only the page creator can stop or add listening agents. On focus change also
saves on window blur, and Auto Save pauses on conflicts. Taken-down pages do
not unfurl. Model picker coverage matches agent-models.ts.
