Adds double-click rename and internal drag-and-drop moves to the v2 workspace file tree.

The FilesTab root-drop override called private Pierre model methods, so it was removed. Pierre continues to handle supported tree drag targets.

Video example

Screen.Recording.2026-09-20.at.20.43.45.1.mov

Tests:

  • bun test apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/components/WorkspaceSidebar/components/FilesTab/utils/treePath/treePath.test.ts
  • Focused Biome check
  • Desktop typecheck: branch-specific errors resolved; existing unrelated auth/trpc errors remain.

Summary by cubic

Adds double-click rename and internal drag-and-drop moves to the v2 workspace file tree. Renames and moves keep open editors in sync across document paths, dirty buffers, and pane file paths, with folder moves rekeying descendant documents so they reopen with the same identity from their new path.

Details

  • Double-clicking a file or folder starts an inline rename; internal drops move the entry on disk, and paths, pane paths, and descendant rekeying commit only after the move succeeds, with failures refreshing the tree and showing an error toast.
  • Pane file paths update across tabs, including inactive ones.
  • Files no longer open from tree-selection changes; Pierre's selection moves during rename and drag used to open files unintentionally, and every intended open already goes through the click policy.
  • Open documents reload when an atomic save replaces them; a move's watcher echo is told from a real replacement by comparing disk content, so dirty buffers survive the echo without an external-change flag.
  • workspace-fs allows case-only renames on case-insensitive volumes and still rejects hard links to the destination, including case-differing ones.

The root-drop override that called private Pierre model methods is removed; Pierre handles all supported drop targets.

Written for commit 22620fb. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added drag-and-drop support for moving files and folders within the workspace file tree.
    • Double-clicking a file or folder now starts renaming it.
    • Open file panes update when files or folders are moved, including nested paths, while preserving unsaved edits and document state.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented invalid or incomplete file moves from being treated as successful.
    • Improved handling of file selections and paths after moves.
    • Move failures now display an error notification.
    • Fixed case-only renames and prevented moves onto a hard link to the source.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The file tree now starts renaming on left-button double-click and handles drag-and-drop moves. Successful moves and renames report filesystem events that update document and pane paths. The filesystem move operation allows case-only renames when both paths resolve to the same entry.

Changes

File tree operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tree rename and move interactions
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/clickPolicy/usePierreRowClickPolicy.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../FilesTab.tsx, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../utils/treePath/*
Left-button double-clicks start row renaming. File-tree drops route move results and errors to the action hook. moveDestinationPath builds file or directory destinations for a target folder or the root. External selected paths that are known to the bridge proceed to focus.
Move mutations and path updates
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../useFilesTabActions/*
handleMove persists dropped paths, updates known paths after success, and reports successful moves as rename events. Rename actions also report rename events. Tests check known paths during no-op, pending, and failed moves.
Document and pane path propagation
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../state/fileDocumentStore/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../page.tsx
The provider dispatches filesystem events and updates file-pane paths. Rename handling remaps document paths, including directory descendants, and uses a moved-path marker to skip duplicate watcher echoes. Tests cover dirty documents, replacement files, duplicate events, and inactive tabs.

Filesystem case-only rename

Layer / File(s) Summary
Case-only move validation
packages/workspace-fs/src/fs.ts, packages/workspace-fs/src/fs.test.ts
movePath allows an existing destination when source and destination differ only by case and resolve to the same device and inode. Tests cover case-only rename and hard-link rejection.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7762e

A move can be reported as complete without changing the file, and a later file replacement can leave an open editor stale or unflagged. Resolve these cases before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7762e

A move can overlap a save, creating a risk that an open editor reports changes as saved against the new path when the write targeted the old path. Normal move failures have a recovery path, but the save-and-move ordering needs a stronger guarantee.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A save racing with a rename can complete for the old path after its document entry has moved, yet update the moved entry as saved. Forced or unversioned writes can leave the destination buffer incorrectly marked clean.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected state is scoped to open documents and panes for a workspace, including descendants of moved directories. No new network entrypoint or independently attacker-controlled event source was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workspace event subscription forwards filesystem events to the document and pane handler without a local path-scope check. The watcher observes a subscribed root, but end-to-end event authenticity and containment were not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The save-and-move race affects dirty-buffer ownership and recovery, rather than establishing a confirmed privilege or workspace-boundary bypass.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind save completion to the document’s path or generation at submission, and reconcile a result for an entry that moved before marking it clean.
  • proposed — Establish and enforce an explicit workspace-path scope for rename events before they can rekey documents or panes, if the event transport does not already guarantee it.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Make duplicate rename events idempotent.

When the first rename has already remapped entry.absolutePath, the same watcher rename bypasses renamedSource, matches line 411, and enters content-mutation handling. For a clean document, loadEntry can overwrite an edit made while its read is pending. For a dirty document, this path sets hasExternalChange for an application-initiated rename.

Ignore an already-applied rename before the content-mutation branch, or suppress the matching watcher event for synthetic moves.

Rebased to resolve some conflicts @Kitenite

Pierre moves the selection when a rename starts or commits and when a drag
starts or drops. The selection handler opened each of those, so renaming an
open file left it open twice (the pane follows the rename only after the move
finishes) and dragging a closed file opened it. Every intended open already
goes through the click policy, including Space on a focused row, so opening
from selection only ever fired for these side effects.
The merge with main skipped every rename whose destination is an open
document, to drop the watcher's copy of a move the file tree had already
applied. That also dropped atomic saves (write a temp file, rename it over
the original), so an open file kept stale content and a dirty buffer never
showed the external-change banner. Skip only the echo of the move the
document just followed. Also fixes a test cast that failed typecheck.
Renaming beta.txt to Beta.txt on APFS failed with "Destination already
exists" because the existence check finds the source itself. Allow the
rename when the destination is the same inode and the names differ only by
case; hard links to the source are still rejected.

Remembering the path a document moved from misfires when the watcher never
reports the move and a later rename replaces the file from that same path.
Read the disk instead: identical content is the echo and is ignored; changed
content reloads a clean document or flags a dirty one.
On a case-sensitive volume beta.txt and Beta.txt can be two hard links to
one inode, which passed the same-inode check; POSIX rename between them is a
silent no-op, so the move reported success without happening. Require the
directory to list only the source's name instead.
