What

Cloud workspace rows get an agent-status dot without the sidebar holding a socket to the box.

  • Box → API: host-service in sandbox mode (runtime/sandbox-agent-status) derives the workspace's status — the most urgent across its terminals, from the same lifecycle events a host's dot uses — and POSTs it to /api/cloud-workspaces/:id/agent-status with its host secret. Only on change, settled 2 s, capped at one report per 5 s per box.
  • API: reportSandboxAgentStatus verifies the secret, writes cloud_workspaces.agent_status / agent_status_at (migration 0126), and nudges the realtime channel with the value.
  • Realtime Worker: nudges can carry patches (updates, last write per workspace, coalesced with the existing 500 ms window). A patch never turns into a refetch.
  • Desktop: RealtimeNudges patches cloudWorkspace.list in the cache; the sidebar status provider uses the reported status for sandbox rows, which are now in its target list. Open boxes keep their live subscription as before.
  • One vocabulary: @superset/shared/agent-status owns the status union, urgency order and event→status mapping. tabs-types.ts (PaneStatus, STATUS_PRIORITY) and deriveTerminalAgentStatus now read from it instead of restating it.
  • docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md gets the entry.

Why

Agent notifications in the sidebar didn't work for cloud. Polling the boxes was ruled out (tickets + sockets per box, wakes stopped boxes, and it's the pattern that has bitten us); a DO-per-sandbox was judged premature. This keeps the API out of any hot loop: the write volume is bounded by the box-side cap, and clients never refetch on a status change. If the route's invocation count ever says otherwise, the Worker+DO version is a contained swap behind the same client contract.

Verified

  • Reporter, at the wire (scratch harness against an in-memory TerminalAgentStore and a local listener): a burst of Start/Stop/Start → one working report at 2 s; a PermissionRequest inside the window → deferred to the 5 s cap; an unchanged event → no report; both agents stopping → review; host secret on every call.
  • API → Worker → desktop, in the dev app (seeded ready row; POST as the box with a minted host secret; CDP on the renderer): working → spinner on the closed row, permission → indicator, null → cleared, 0 cloudWorkspace.list fetches throughout; wrong secret → 401. Direct Worker subscription shows the frame: {"type":"nudge","kinds":[],"updates":[{…"agentStatus":"working"…}]}.
  • Root typecheck 42/42, bun run lint clean, desktop 448 / shared 1108 / host-service 96 tests pass.
  • Not yet shown with a real box: the reporter reaches a box only through a host-service release.

Summary by cubic

Cloud workspace rows in the sidebar now show an agent-status dot. A box reports its own status instead of the sidebar polling it or holding a socket to it, which would keep the VM awake.

New Features

  • host-service in sandbox mode derives the most urgent status across its terminals and POSTs it to /api/cloud-workspaces/:id/agent-status with its host secret, coalesced to at most one report per 5 seconds per box.
  • The API stores the last value (agent_status/agent_status_at, migration 0126) and the realtime nudge carries it as a patch; open clients patch their cache and never refetch on a status change.
  • Cloud rows join the sidebar status target list; review and failed mark the row unread, and seen times come from the host's clock.
  • @superset/shared/agent-status now owns the status union, urgency order, and event mapping that the desktop and the reporter share.
  • Reaches a box only through a host-service release.

Written for commit 9d23935. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cloud workspaces now display agent activity in the dashboard sidebar, including working, review, failed, and permission statuses.
    • Status changes update in real time while the dashboard is open.
    • Review and failed statuses contribute to unread indicators; marking a workspace as seen clears review alerts.
    • Cloud workspace activity may take a few seconds to appear when the sandbox is closed.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds sandbox agent-status reporting to cloud workspaces. It stores status and timestamps, distributes updates through realtime nudges, and incorporates reported status into desktop workspace status and notification handling.

Changes

Agent Status Reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared status definitions and workspace fields
packages/shared/src/agent-status.ts, packages/shared/package.json, packages/db/src/schema/schema.ts, packages/db/drizzle/0126_cloud_workspaces_agent_status.sql, packages/db/drizzle/meta/_journal.json, apps/desktop/src/shared/tabs-types.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/hooks/host-service/useTerminalAgentStatuses/deriveTerminalAgentStatus.ts
Shared code defines active statuses, event mapping, validation, and priority selection. Cloud workspace schema and migration add nullable status and timestamp fields. Desktop pane priorities and terminal status derivation use the shared definitions.
Sandbox reporting and API
packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/agent-status.ts, packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/index.ts, apps/api/src/app/api/cloud-workspaces/[workspaceId]/agent-status/route.ts, packages/host-service/src/app.ts, packages/host-service/src/runtime/sandbox-agent-status/*, packages/host-service/src/serve.ts, docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md
The host reports aggregated status to the API. The API validates and authenticates the report, updates a non-deleted workspace, and triggers a realtime nudge.
Realtime status updates
packages/shared/src/realtime.ts, packages/trpc/src/lib/realtime.ts, apps/realtime/src/index.ts, apps/realtime/src/org-hub.ts
Realtime messages accept validated workspace updates. The realtime service coalesces pending updates by workspace and broadcasts them with nudge kinds.
Desktop workspace status handling
apps/desktop/src/renderer/stores/v2-notifications/store.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/DashboardSidebar/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/components/RealtimeNudges/RealtimeNudges.tsx
The sidebar uses reported status and timestamps for cloud workspaces. Workspace seen times are persisted and pruned, and realtime updates patch matching workspace cache rows.

🧹 Preview Cleanup Complete

The following preview resources have been cleaned up:

  • ✅ Neon database branch

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉

A cloud row's dot never lit up: the sidebar deliberately opens no socket to
a sandbox (holding one keeps the VM awake all day), so a box's agent status
only existed inside the box. Now the box reports it. host-service in
sandbox mode derives the workspace's status from the same lifecycle events
a host's dot uses, and posts it to the API with its host secret whenever it
changes — coalesced two seconds, at most one report per five. The row
keeps the last value so a cold client sees it at once, and the realtime
nudge carries it so open clients patch their cache; nothing new polls, and
a status change never causes a list refetch.

One vocabulary for what an agent's status is now lives in
@superset/shared/agent-status; the desktop's pane statuses, its priority
order and its event-to-status derivation read from it instead of restating
it, and the box uses the same functions.

Reaches a box through the next host-service release. Cost at today's
scale is a handful of single-row updates per minute per busy box; the
Worker-and-DO path is the swap if the route's invocation count ever says
otherwise.

Reject stale realtime updates in the desktop cache.

If a delayed older update arrives after a newer alarm has already broadcast, patch overwrites the cached row without comparing agentStatusAt. When no workspace is provisioning, the query has no polling refetch, and update messages do not invalidate it. The stale status can therefore remain until another refetch or socket reconnect. A pending-map guard does not protect updates that arrive in separate alarms.

Keep the newest pending update for each workspace.

reportSandboxAgentStatus sends an independent realtime request after each successful database write. If the newer request reaches OrgHub first, a delayed older request replaces it at org-hub.ts:32. The alarm then broadcasts the older status to every connected client. Because the update path does not add a kind, the desktop applies the stale patch without a refetch.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include the latest event time in the deduplication check.

send skips a report when the aggregated status equals lastSent. Consider this sequence: the box reports review, and the user marks the workspace seen through that at. The agent then gets a new prompt and stops again within the settle window or the 5 s interval. The aggregate goes review → working → review between two sends, so send sees review === lastSent and returns early. No report is sent, and agentStatusAt does not advance. On the desktop, workspaceSeenAt >= report.at stays true, so the provider hides the new review, and the user gets no unread signal for the new result.

Track the highest lastEventAt across the bindings that feed the status. Send a report when that value advances, even if the status is unchanged.

Schedule a retry after a failed report.

On failure, the catch block sets lastSent = undefined but schedules nothing. A new report is sent only when TerminalAgentStore emits the next change event. Consider a box that goes idle after a transient API error, a 5xx, or a timeout. No event follows, so the API row and every sidebar keep the old status (for example working) indefinitely. The row can also stay stale until the box is deleted.

Call schedule() after the reset. schedule() already enforces MIN_INTERVAL_MS, so a repeated failure retries once every 5 s at most. Add backoff if the API can fail for long periods.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject reports older than the stored agentStatusAt.

The UPDATE always overwrites agentStatus and agentStatusAt. The reporter can send a new report 5 s after the previous one, but each request has a 10 s timeout. Two requests can therefore be in flight at the same time. If the older request reaches the database last, it writes the older status. The nudge then sends that older status to every client. The row keeps the wrong value until the next status change on the box.

Add a monotonic guard to the WHERE clause. If no row matches, the report is either stale or for an unknown workspace. Return a separate outcome for the stale case so the route does not answer 404 for it.
