Problem

On a Claude thread, reverting to the message right after a /compact turn always fails with "The provider could not roll back this conversation". The server logs "no SDK assistant message cursor was recorded for that turn". Idle compaction defaults to sending /compact when you return to a thread, so most long-running Claude threads end up with messages that can't be reverted to.

Repro: on a Claude thread, send two messages, send /compact, then send a message that edits a file. Reverting to that last message fails.

Change

The Claude adapter records a resume cursor only from main-thread assistant messages. A /compact turn produces none, so rollback rejected it. resolveClaudeRollbackResumeSessionAt now falls back to the latest earlier turn's cursor when the target turn has none. That point holds the same conversation and only undoes the compaction, so the next turn resumes with the full uncompacted history. With no earlier cursor, rollback still errors as before.

resolveClaudeForkUpToMessageId has the same check. I left it unchanged so this PR stays on the reported bug.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug in one function of the Claude adapter. I didn't find an existing issue or PR for it. No other adapters or clients change.

Verification

• Extended the existing test "never records a subagent uuid for a turn with no main-thread assistant message" in ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts: rolling back to a turn with no cursor now resumes at the earlier turn's cursor. The test fails on main with the cursor error.
• ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts and CheckpointRollbackService.test.ts pass (261 tests), and tsc --noEmit passes for apps/server.
• Ran a live end-to-end check on a clean Linux VM with Claude Code 2.1.314 and claude-haiku-5-5, driving the server over its WebSocket API. The thread had two messages, then /compact (with idleCompaction: "onReturn"), then a turn that writes a file. I then reverted to that last turn with file restore.
  • On main, the revert fails, the last run stays completed, the file is not removed, and the trace logs the cursor error.
  • On this branch, the revert succeeds, the last run becomes rolled_back, and the file is removed. In a follow-up turn Claude recalled both earlier messages and said no files had been created. In Claude's session transcript, the new prompt's parent is turn 2's assistant message, and its chain has no compact boundary and no reverted turn.

verified on linux with the real web app, google chrome, playwright, and real provider turns through the local proxy. projects, isolated worktrees, threads, and files were created through the app.

• on github/main (5732bbee39), two claude turns → /compact → file-writing turn → edit from here reproduced the missing SDK assistant cursor failure. the file remained.
• the original pr allowed compaction rollback, but also skipped cursorless stopped prompts. a real follow-up changed from MARIGOLD-812743 before rollback to an older code afterward while the stopped prompt remained visible.
• pushed two scoped fixes to the existing contributor head, now e886d76b35b3090e508b186c63d16e6a3b2380be. fallback now requires the target message to be /compact without attachments and the immediately preceding retained turn to have a cursor.
• reverified compaction rollback on that head: the file-writing turn became rolled back, the file disappeared, and its prompt returned to the composer. the native follow-up parent matched the second pre-compaction assistant cursor.
• verified stopped-prompt rollback is rejected without losing its history. also verified a stopped turn immediately before /compact prevents fallback and leaves the file intact.
