Problem

A path copied from Finder or Windows Explorer and pasted into a box that asks for a folder isn't read as that path, and what the box offers instead can create a junk folder and project. The box should read the folder the pasted text names.

To reproduce on macOS: use Copy as Pathname on a folder with a space in its name, open Add Project, choose Local folder, and paste. The box reads ~/'/Users/me/Monarch Money' and offers Create & Add. Pressing Enter accepts it, which creates a folder named ' in the home folder and a project titled Monarch Money'.

What gets pasted: Finder writes text for a shell, reportedly since macOS Sequoia: '/Users/me/Monarch Money' for a path with a space, and /Users/me/Bob\'s\ Stuff for one with an apostrophe. Windows Explorer's Copy as path writes "C:\Users\me\My Code". Add Project treats the quoted forms as search text and offers Create & Add for the escaped form. In Local folder, which opens on ~/, pasting any of them, even a plain path, offers Create & Add.

Fixes #28457.

Change

resolvePastedPath(previous, next) in packages/shared/src/path.ts decides what a folder box holds after a change:

  • One character added, or text deleted from the end, is typing and passes through untouched.
  • A quoted full path at the end of the text replaces the box, without its quotes, when the text before it was already in the box. A pasted find '/tmp/repo' stays a search.
  • A full path pasted after a folder ending in a separator replaces the box, so ~//a/b becomes /a/b. /a followed by /a/b stays a longer path, because it can't be told apart from selecting all and pasting that path.
  • Shell escapes only come off / and ~/ paths, because \ separates folders in Windows paths.
  • Anything else, such as search text or a relative folder, is left alone.

Every box that asks for a folder calls it, because they all fail the same way: Add Project and clone destinations in the command palette and on mobile, Add to Another Machine, the Add Project start folder, Worktree location, and the scheduled task checkout path on web and mobile. It runs in the client, so the server and agent tools still receive exactly what they're sent. The start folder and Worktree location save on blur, so they normalize each change as it happens, the start folder through a new optional normalizeDraft on DraftInput.

Not included: provider binary and home paths, which live in a generic provider form rather than a folder box, and the SSH identity file, which is a file.

Scope and approval

Bug report: #28457, not yet triaged. No maintainer has approved this, so I'm submitting it under the exception for a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug: copying a folder's path from the OS file manager and pasting it into a box that asks for a folder should add that folder, and what the box offers today creates a junk folder and project. It adds no setting or UI.

One behavior to weigh: a pasted full path replaces what's in the box instead of being inserted at the caret. That is what stops ~/'/a b'. Typing isn't affected.

Verification

The table below and iOS ran on the first commit. db89496 and 235d2cd address Macroscope's and CodeRabbit's reviews. db89496's changes are checked in the last two web bullets, and 235d2cd changes only the helper, covered by unit tests.

Web. Before is unmodified main @ 575579d and after is this branch, both in the web dev build in Chromium on macOS 27.0.1 with a throwaway home folder.

Pasted Where Before After
'/…/Monarch Money' Add Project "No matching commands, projects, or threads." Reads the path, lists the folder, offers Add

/…/Bob\'s\ Stuff Add Project Create & Add Reads /…/Bob's Stuff, offers Add
"/…/Monarch Money" Add Project "No matching commands, projects, or threads." Reads the path, offers Add
Enter on the second row Local folder Folder named ' in the home folder, project Monarch Money' Adds the real folder as Monarch Money, no new folder
Before After
Local folder before: the box reads ~/'/tmp/.../Monarch Money' and offers Create & Add Local folder after: the box reads the clean path, lists Monarch Money, and offers Add
After Enter before: the project is titled Monarch Money with a stray quote After Enter after: the project is titled Monarch Money

Add Project before: no matches for the quoted path

Also on this branch, on web:

  • Typing a path one character at a time, with spaces and Backspace, is unchanged.
  • Select all, then pasting a longer path with the same start, keeps all of it.
  • A quoted path pasted after a clone destination (~/t3code) replaces it.
  • A typed "/usr/bin/env" and a pasted 'hello world' at the palette root stay searches.
  • The checkout path holds the clean path.
  • The Add Project start folder and Worktree location read a quoted paste straight away, replace a saved folder when a plain path is pasted after it, and keep a typed /tmp/a\ b as typed.
  • /…/\'My\ Folder\' reads as the folder named 'My Folder' and offers Add.

Mobile. iOS 26.5 simulator with the dev client, using the system Paste menu:

  • Select All, then the quoted path, in Local folder reads the clean path and lists the folder.
  • The apostrophe form after ~/ reads /…/Bob's Stuff. Add project then creates a project titled Bob's Stuff and no junk folder.
  • The scheduled task checkout path reads the clean path.
Local folder Checkout path
iOS Local folder with the clean path and Monarch Money listed iOS checkout path with the clean path

Desktop. All three commits in a packaged build on top of nightly 0.1.7-nightly.20261031.4004, with throwaway data: the quoted and apostrophe forms, pasting after ~/, select all, typing, a pasted search, Enter, and both settings boxes all behaved as described here.

Add to Another Machine. This needs a second machine, so I used a temporary browser test, not committed, that renders the real dialog: filling the folder box with '/Users/me/My Code' showed /Users/me/My Code.

Tests. vp test run packages/shared/src/path.test.ts: 47 passed, 36 of them new. They fail on main, where resolvePastedPath doesn't exist. useCommitOnBlur.browser.test.tsx has one new case. vp run check:changed passes, along with the command palette and Add to Another Machine browser tests.

Not checked:

  • Android: the emulator can't start on my Mac (Unable to locate a Java Runtime). The boxes use the same TextInput code as iOS.
  • A real Windows host. Drive and UNC paths are covered by unit tests, and I ran the double-quoted form on macOS.
  • Finder's apostrophe format on my own machine. The quoted form is what I get from Finder on macOS 27.0.1. The apostrophe form comes from the write-up linked above.
  • Mobile before the fix. From reading the code, its Add project button sends the text as typed.

Written with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code. A separate Claude agent reviewed the diff before this PR, and its findings are fixed here.

… folder

A full path pasted into a folder box wasn't read as that path. Finder's Copy as
Pathname writes text for a shell (reported since macOS Sequoia): `'/a b'` for a
path with a space and `/a\'s\ b` for one with an apostrophe. Windows Explorer's
Copy as path writes `"C:\a b"`. The box treated the quoted forms as search text
and offered Create & Add for the escaped form. Pasted after the prefilled `~/`,
any of them, even a plain path, offered Create & Add, and accepting made a junk
folder and project such as `~/'/a b'`.

Folder boxes now treat a pasted full path as replacing what they hold, without
its shell quoting. Typing keeps working one character at a time.

Walkthrough

A shared helper resolves eligible pasted host paths while preserving ordinary typing and deletion. Web and mobile project and settings inputs use the helper. Draft inputs can apply an optional normalizer before storing edits.

Changes: Pasted Path Normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared pasted-path resolution
packages/shared/src/path.ts, packages/shared/src/path.test.ts
Adds resolvePastedPath to distinguish typing from pasted paths, recognize eligible quoted or appended host paths, and remove shell escapes from accepted non-Windows paths. Tests cover pasted path formats and ordinary typing.
Project and checkout path inputs
apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/components/AddProjectToMachineDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/projects/AddProjectScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsScheduledTasksRouteScreen.tsx
Project and checkout path inputs apply path resolution to edits. The command palette resolves pasted paths only when path browsing is allowed.
Draft path normalization
apps/web/src/hooks/useCommitOnBlur.ts, apps/web/src/components/ui/draft-input.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/hooks/useCommitOnBlur.browser.test.tsx
useCommitOnBlur accepts an optional normalizer, which DraftInput forwards. The add-project base directory and worktrees directory use path resolution. A browser test checks normalized draft edits.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: pasting a path copied from Finder or Explorer now adds that folder. It matches the changeset, which adds resolvePastedPath and applies it across folder-entry boxes. The title follows conventional commit form and is concise.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and each section has substantive content. The Problem section gives reproduction steps and the expected behavior. The Change section explains the helper and where it runs. The Scope section names bug report #28457 and explains why the small-fix exception applies. Verification lists web, mobile, and desktop checks, unit test counts, and items not checked. The description also uses a conventional commit title. Minor gaps: the Scope section relies on an exception for an untriaged issue, and the template asks for a maintainer-approved issue or discussion. The objectives also note Maria's Linux verification pass, which the description does not mention. These gaps do not make the description largely incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes meet the coding requirements in [#28457]. resolvePastedPath recognizes supported Finder and Explorer path forms, removes supported quoting and Unix shell escapes, and handles a full path pasted after a ~/ folder prefix. It preserves typing, searches, relative paths, and Windows separator paths. packages/shared/src/path.test.ts covers recognized and unchanged inputs. The helper is applied to the web Add Project and folder-entry flows. These changes allow existing folders to be listed and added without creating a junk folder.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#28457]. The shared resolver, regression tests, DraftInput normalization, and integrations with clone destinations, Add to Another Machine, start-folder and Worktree settings, and scheduled-task checkout fields support the same folder-path paste behavior. The mobile integrations support the same behavior in shared folder-entry flows. Provider binary and home paths, the SSH identity file, server handling, and agent handling remain unchanged.

Preserve middle-character edits.

The typing guard does not recognize edits in the middle of a path. If /Users/me/a\ b becomes /Users/me/\ b, the helper reaches SHELL_ESCAPE and returns /Users/me/ b. Web and mobile callers store this result, so the edit changes the folder path.

Treat any single-character insertion or deletion as typing.

Not changing this. It only affects a box that already holds a literal backslash before a symbol, which is rare in a folder path. The result shows in the box before anything is saved, and a plain path has nothing to unescape, so ordinary mid-string edits aren't affected. Diffing for one-character edits anywhere in the text is more code than this case earns.

…ed text

Commit-on-blur boxes passed the whole finished text to resolvePastedPath, so a
typed `/tmp/a\ b` lost its backslash and `/mnt/new` pasted after a saved
`/mnt/old/` wasn't replaced. They now normalize each change against the draft
before it, which is what the other folder boxes already do.

A quote pair that isn't a path, as in `/a/\'My\ Folder\'`, now falls through to
the escape handling instead of leaving the escapes in place.
A quoted path at the end of the text only replaces the box when the text before
it was already there, so pasting `find '/tmp/repo'` into the palette keeps
searching. Also reads a shell's quoted apostrophe, as in `'/a/Bob'\''s Work'`.

Preserve the caret after normalizing a middle paste.

When old is replaced with New\ Folder in /tmp/old/sub, resolvePastedPath changes the controlled value to /tmp/New Folder/sub. The handler does not preserve the selection, so the controlled update can move the caret to the end. Subsequent typing can then edit the wrong path component.

Capture the selection before normalization, map both offsets through the escape removal, and restore the selection after the controlled update.

Preserve the checkout selection when normalizing a paste.

Replacing old with New\ Folder produces /tmp/New Folder/sub. The multi-character replacement does not satisfy the proposed one-character insertion guard, so normalization still changes the controlled value. The browser can then move the caret to the end of the field, after /sub, causing later typing to modify the wrong path component.

Capture selectionStart and selectionEnd in ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx before setDraft, then restore the logical selection after the normalized value commits. Adjust the restored offsets for removed escape characters. The one-character guard does not address this paste path.

Preserve the caret after normalization.

If a user replaces old in /tmp/old/sub with New\ Folder, normalization changes the input value. This assignment then moves the caret to the end, so subsequent typing goes after /sub instead of after New Folder. Restore the adjusted selection after writing the normalized value.

Update the normalization flow around the assignment to event.target.value so it
preserves the caret position after the normalized value is written. Adjust the
selection to account for the difference between the user’s input and its
normalized form, keeping subsequent typing at the corresponding position rather
than moving it to the end.

Confirmed, and not changing it. The caret only moves when a fragment with shell escapes is pasted into the middle of a path, as in New\ Folder over old. The text still ends up correct, and a plain fragment doesn't change the value, so the caret stays put. Mapping selections through escape removal in every folder box is more code than this case earns. The same applies to Add to Another Machine and the checkout path from the follow-up comments.

@kimkhoi2202 Understood. I accept leaving this caret behavior unchanged for this PR. I won’t press for selection mapping here, in Add to Another Machine, or in the checkout path input.

Preserve the caret when normalizing the draft.

The Add Project input is a controlled native input through @base-ui/react/input. Replacing old with New\ Folder changes /tmp/old/sub to /tmp/New Folder/sub. useCommitOnBlur does not translate or restore the selection, so the controlled update can move the caret after /sub. Later typing can edit the wrong path component.

Capture the selection before normalization, map it to the normalized value, and restore it after the update. Changing resolvePastedPath alone cannot preserve the selection.

Preserve middle-segment deletions before escape normalization.

Deleting old/ from /tmp/old/a\ b produces /tmp/a\ b. The current deletion check does not recognize this middle deletion, so resolvePastedPath treats the result as a pasted POSIX path and changes it to /tmp/a b.

A one-character edit check does not fix this case. Detect a value formed by deleting a contiguous range from the previous draft, then return it unchanged.

Confirmed, and not changing it, for the same reason as the earlier middle-edit thread. It only affects a box already holding a literal backslash before a symbol, the result shows in the box before anything is saved, and a plain path has nothing to unescape.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 235d2cd1be4c5c5c3c5a4bc2841cdacccf4a6deb on a Linux Boat VM using the real dev web client, repo Playwright dependencies, and /usr/bin/google-chrome.

  • reproduced on github/main (7195b69954) in a separate worktree after vp i: Add project → Local folder → paste '/tmp/pasted-path-verification/Monarch Money' after ~/. main keeps the concatenated quoted value and offers Create & Add.
  • stopped main, checked out the exact pr head, ran vp i, and started the dev server with isolated state. the same clipboard paste reads the clean absolute path, lists the existing folder, and offers Add. Enter opens a thread in the real git repo.
  • submitted a real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn through that thread. it ran pwd and git rev-parse --show-toplevel; both returned /tmp/pasted-path-verification/Monarch Money.
  • pasted /tmp/pasted-path-verification/Bob\'s\ Stuff after ~/; it resolves to the actual Bob's Stuff repo and Enter adds that project. the recording shows this interaction.
  • checked ordinary character-by-character typing and Backspace, a plain absolute paste after ~/, select-all replacement with a longer path, and search text ending in a quoted path. these retain the expected values.
  • checked the Add project start-folder setting: a quoted paste normalizes and survives leaving/reopening the panel; a manually typed /tmp/a\ b retains its literal backslash after saving.
  • remote Blacksmith checks: vp test run packages/shared/src/path.test.ts apps/web/src/hooks/useCommitOnBlur.browser.test.tsx, 50 tests passed. the worker initially lacked Chromium; installed its browser dependencies and reran successfully. the pr reports 28 successful checks, zero failing or pending checks.

before, main:

main keeps the quoted path after the home prefix and offers Create & Add

after, exact pr head:

pr resolves the same clipboard path and offers Add for the existing repo

real Codex turn confirms the selected repo through pwd and git

escaped apostrophe clipboard paste resolves and adds the real project

Not verified

native iOS/Android, packaged Electron, actual Finder/Explorer clipboard generation, Windows drive/UNC resolution, remote/relay/tunnel connections, clone destinations, Add to Another Machine, scheduled checkout paths, and Worktree location were not exercised. this Linux pass uses real clipboard text in the formats described by the pr; it does not establish behavior on those hosts or clients. other providers were not exercised. the accepted middle-edit/caret edge cases discussed in the pr were not rechecked.

The only conflict was the import block in ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx: main
rewrote the contracts import next to the one this branch adds. Kept main's block
and added this branch's resolvePastedPath import to it.

Merged main to clear a conflict in ScheduledTasksSettings.tsx, where main rewrote the import next to the one this PR adds. That import is the only line I resolved by hand. This PR's changed lines against main are the same as at 235d2cd1be4, the head verified earlier.

On the merged code, in the web dev build, I retested Add Project, Local folder, the clone destination, the scheduled task checkout path, the Add Project start folder, and Worktree location. I also tried Tab completion after a paste, since it landed on main after this PR, and it works. vp run check:changed passes. I didn't rerun iOS or Add to Another Machine.

* fix(web): play completion sounds without delay (pingdotgg#29146)

Completion alerts waited two seconds after the client received a completed thread state. Audio was also fetched and decoded only when an alert needed to play, adding a first-play delay.

Notify immediately when the thread shell reports completion, and preload both sounds when a user gesture unlocks audio. Keep completion deduplication and suppression for existing, archived, and stopped runs.

This intentionally removes the continuation grace for completion alerts. A completed run can now notify before an automatic continuation starts. The sidebar's two-second placement grace and server settlement behavior remain in place.

Validation: `vp run check:changed` passes after merging current main, including 40 affected tests, formatting, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and React compiler checks. Tests cover immediate completion, duplicate suppression across reconnects, preloaded audio reuse, and retrying failed loads on alerts without retrying on every gesture. Audible timing has not been verified in a live client.

Model: GPT 6.1 Sol. Harness: Codex through T3 Code.

* fix(web): preserve scroll position when expanding work details (pingdotgg#29166)

* fix(server): Claude threads no longer join the Claude session that launched T3 (pingdotgg#29169)
