fix(web): expanded SVG diagrams fill the image viewer - #27519
Opening a D2 diagram from a chat message shows it at about 70×150 px, smaller than the inline copy, so you have to zoom in before you can read it. D2 writes an outer <svg> with only a viewBox. With no width or height, Chromium reports a fallback natural size (191×150 for a 1174×920 viewBox). The viewer caps its fit scale at 1×, so it never grows past that size. Mermaid diagrams hit the same cap and open no larger than they appear inline.
Repro: have an agent reply with for any D2 output, then click the image.
Change
ZoomableImage lets SVGs scale above 1× when fitting the viewer. Raster images keep the 1× cap, so small screenshots don't blur.
ExpandedImageDialog falls back to the media reference's file name (or a data: URL) for the MIME type when the item has none. This covers markdown images and gallery navigation between several diagrams in one message.
Mermaid previews are tagged image/svg+xml; their blob URLs carry no file name.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug: the expanded view is smaller than the inline image it expands. It changes only how the existing viewer fits vector images. No product behavior or defaults change for raster images.
Verification
Added a browser test in ExpandedImageDialog.browser.test.tsx: a viewBox-only SVG opened through a markdown file reference fills the viewer width. On main it fails at 191 px against 381 px expected; with the fix it passes.
vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, and the React compiler check.
Manual check in vp run dev (Chromium, 1280×800). A Claude Haiku turn replied with a local D2 SVG and a Mermaid block, and I clicked each one.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Expanded SVG diagrams now automatically enlarge to fit the viewer, while raster images retain their existing size cap. Human confirmation is needed for this change to the viewer’s initial sizing default.

Walkthrough
Mermaid previews now include SVG MIME metadata. Expanded-image dialogs resolve image MIME types, and SVG images can scale beyond the default fit limit. A browser test checks the viewer width for SVG paths with and without URL suffixes.

Summary
Resolve image MIME type apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ExpandedImageDialog.tsx
Mermaid previews now include the image/svg+xml MIME type. The dialog uses an explicit MIME type when available, or detects one from the referenced file name or source URL, and passes the result to ZoomableImage.
Scale SVG images to viewer width apps/web/src/components/chat/ZoomableImage.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ExpandedImageDialog.browser.test.tsx
SVG images can scale beyond the fit limit of 1; other image types retain that limit. The browser test checks the viewer width for an SVG without intrinsic dimensions across three file paths.
The browser test can fail at wide, height-constrained viewports even when the image fits correctly. This does not affect production behavior.

verified on linux with the real dev web app, repo-installed playwright, and /usr/bin/google-chrome. created a project pointing at a real git repository through the app, then ran codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the composer. the first turn created the svg/png files and returned markdown images plus a mermaid block. the pr turn read those same files and returned the same images and diagram. no mocks, replay provider, fixtures, or direct database writes were used to create this scenario.
reproduced on github/main at 5fe18d79ac in a separate worktree before starting the pr server. only one dev server ran at a time. then checked out exact pr head 5f3dad1cc9, installed dependencies, and repeated the flow. restarted and re-verified after the fix at 2cd0b95c53394baa70adedfe0bd512bf55c86982.
at 1280×800, the viewbox-only svg opened at 191×150 on main and about 815×640 on the pr. mermaid grew from 386×64 to about 1082×179. the identical 64×64 png stayed 64×64. gallery arrows, click/enter zoom, keyboard panning, 0 to fit, escape, resize back to desktop, light/dark appearance, and the web layout at 390×844 worked. the narrow svg fit at about 359×282.
found and fixed one remaining bug on the original pr head: filenames containing literal # or ? were misclassified after decoding, so those svgs still opened at 191×150. commit 2cd0b95c53 classifies their literal extension. both now fit at about 815×640 through the real markdown asset path. pushed without force to the existing contributor head.
extended the existing browser test with both filename cases. before the fix: 2 failed, 2 passed, with 191px actual versus 380.88px expected. after the fix: 4 passed. vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, knip, affected-package typechecks, 20 adjacent browser tests, and the changed-file react compiler check. hosted ci tests, build/typecheck, and lint have also passed on the new head. automated review is still reporting.

native ios/android, the electron desktop shell, macos/windows behavior, relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised on this linux vm. the change is in the shared web viewer; mobile has a separate preview. no performance claim is made. automated review completion on the new head remains unverified.

Account for the height limit in the width assertion.
At a 1280×800 viewport, this SVG reaches the viewer’s 640 px height limit before it reaches availableWidth. The assertion then fails even when the SVG fits correctly. Calculate the expected width from both fit limits, or set a viewport where width is the limiting dimension. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
