The Grok, Pi and fx status checks give <cli> --version 4 seconds. A healthy CLI that starts slowly loses that race, for example a cold Node start behind a shim, a version manager, antivirus scanning or a Windows job object. The check then reports an error, and the provider shows as Unavailable until a later check happens to answer within 4 seconds.

This is the problem #11080 fixed for OpenCode. The triage there said the timeout is meant to stop hung wrappers (#8681), not slow but healthy starts, and that "Claude/Grok use the same 4s CLI default" (Claude has since moved to 20 seconds). #16544 raised only OpenCode to 10 seconds. Pi and fx came later and inherited the same 4 seconds.

Change

• Grok and Pi: the --version budget goes from 4 to 10 seconds.
• fx: --version gets its own 10 second constant instead of the shared DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS.
• Pi's pi auth check used the same constant. It now uses DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS, so it keeps exactly 4 seconds.

Nothing else changes. DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS stays 4 seconds for the other probes that use it. Message text is unchanged, and a CLI that really hangs still times out, now after 10 seconds. Muse is in #24676, Claude already allows 20 seconds, and OpenCode has 10 seconds since #16544.

Scope and approval

This follows #11080's accepted triage and the #16544 fix, applied to Grok, Pi and fx. #11080 is closed and its fix covered only OpenCode; #13326 was closed as the same root cause. There is no newer issue for these three. It changes a fixed timeout default, so it needs a maintainer's call. No setting, retry or snapshot change is included.

Verification

• One table per provider, next to its existing status tests (provider-fx and provider-pi status.test.ts, and GrokProvider.test.ts, which already holds the Grok status tests). They run on the test clock, advanced 10 seconds:

  • --version answers after 6 seconds: the parsed version comes back. All three rows fail on main.
  • --version never answers: the existing timeout result comes back, and nothing runs after --version.
  • In each row the process starts at once and holds back its output and exit, so a timeout around the spawn alone would fail these tests.

• Runtime check: the real status checks, with real child processes, against a fake CLI that answers --version after 6 seconds.
