fix(scripts): report:renders works on machines without ~/.cache - #28274
vp run report:renders run crashes before vitest starts on any machine whose home directory has no ~/.cache, such as a fresh macOS or Windows account, a CI image or a clean container:
Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, mkdtemp '<home>/.cache/t3-renders-XXXXXX'
at runOnce (scripts/render-metrics.ts:41:28)
mkdtempSync creates only the final directory, never its parents.
Change
The script now creates its report directory under os.tmpdir() instead of ~/.cache. That directory only passes reports from the vitest writeRenderReport command back to the script on the same machine, and the script deletes it in finally, so a temp directory fits. Other repo scripts, such as update-test-shard-weights.ts, use the same base.
Scope and approval
A one-line fix, plus its test, for an obvious crash in a maintainer script, so it qualifies as a very small, focused fix with no prior issue. It changes only where the short-lived report directory lives. Nothing else reads that location.
Verification
Runtime check with HOME pointed at a new, empty directory:
HOME=<empty dir> node scripts/render-metrics.ts run --runs 1 --out renders.json
Before: exits 1 with the ENOENT ... mkdtemp '<empty dir>/.cache/t3-renders-XXXXXX' error above, before vitest runs.
After: gets past mkdtemp and runs the renders vitest project. With an empty HOME, Playwright also can't find its browsers, so I set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH to the existing Playwright cache for the full run. 11 of 12 scenarios passed, and no t3-renders-* directory was left in the temp dir.
app-stream-assistant-turn already fails on main with the real HOME (MarkdownParagraph expected 30, got 59), and fails the same way on this branch, so the run exits 1 before writing its report. It is unrelated to this change.
Test: runOnce is now exported, and a new case in scripts/render-metrics.test.ts points the home and temp dir variables (HOME and TMPDIR, plus USERPROFILE, TEMP and TMP for Windows) at an empty temp dir and stubs only the spawned vitest run, which writes one scenario report. It checks that runOnce returns the parsed report and removes its report dir. With the old ~/.cache base it fails with the same ENOENT ... mkdtemp error; with the fix it passes.
Checks:
vp run check:changed <base>: format, lint, knip, typecheck and scripts/render-metrics.test.ts pass.
vp test run scripts/render-metrics.test.ts: 3 passed.
Not checked:
A complete report:renders run writing its JSON report, which is blocked by the app-stream-assistant-turn failure above.
mkdtempSync does not create parent directories, so report:renders run
threw ENOENT before vitest started on any machine without ~/.cache. Use
the OS temp directory as the base for the report handoff directory.

Export runOnce and add one case that points HOME and TMPDIR at an empty
temp dir and stubs only the spawned vitest run. It fails with ENOENT at
mkdtemp on the old ~/.cache base, and checks that runOnce returns the
parsed report and removes its report dir.

The runOnce case uses node:fs and node:path on a real temp dir, like the
other script tests, so turn off the Effect nodeBuiltinImport diagnostic
for the file.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The render-report script uses the system temporary directory so it no longer requires ~/.cache to exist. Unique directory creation and cleanup remain unchanged, with no impact on product defaults or customer data.

Walkthrough
runOnce is exported and creates its temporary report directory under the operating system temporary directory. A test checks that it returns a mount report and removes the directory.

Summary
Temporary directory and cleanup test scripts/render-metrics.ts, scripts/render-metrics.test.ts
runOnce now creates its report directory under the operating system temporary directory. The test checks the returned mount report and confirms the directory is empty afterward.

On Windows, os.homedir() reads USERPROFILE and os.tmpdir() reads TEMP
then TMP, so stubbing only HOME and TMPDIR left the runOnce test on the
real profile and temp dir there, and its cleanup check could pass
without testing anything. Stub USERPROFILE, TEMP and TMP to the same
empty dir too.

verified the temporary-directory fix at 9057866ec240bf84ddee8470d60f6cc4ce2ffc4f on linux. no code changes.
reproduced on github/main (54c5f25249961a1aa0b61932329092eadbd9d6fc) in a separate worktree: with an empty home, the actual node scripts/render-metrics.ts run --runs 1 command exits with ENOENT at .cache/t3-renders-XXXXXX before vitest starts. invoked the resolved node binary directly because the node launcher itself creates .cache.
on the exact pr head, ran the same real command with an empty home, a separate temporary directory, and the installed playwright browser cache supplied explicitly. it reaches all 12 browser scenarios. 11 pass; the report directory is removed afterward. no spawn mocks were used for these command runs.
ran the existing scripts/render-metrics.test.ts through blacksmith-check: all 3 tests pass, including report collection/cleanup and comparison behavior. github reports 22 successful and 7 skipped checks at this head, with no failures.
installed both checkouts with vp i, started their real dev servers in the background one at a time, and stopped main before starting the pr. drove the pr web client using repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome, with isolated dev state. added the real repository through the project picker, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted a turn. the provider ran git rev-parse --short HEAD and git status --short; the client displayed PR28274_PROVIDER_OK 9057866ec2 and a clean working tree. a follow-up turn returned PR28274_FOLLOWUP_OK; both responses survived a page reload.
this change is in a maintainer CLI script and has no app/provider entry point. the real app turns are separate integration coverage.
a complete JSON report: app-stream-assistant-turn fails with MarkdownParagraph expected 30, received 59. reproduced the same failure on main with its normal home and on the pr with an empty home; both runs pass the other 11 scenarios. this pre-existing failure prevents final report output, while the directory-creation crash is resolved and failure cleanup works.
macos, windows, native desktop, ios, and android were not exercised on this linux VM. there is no visual app change requiring before/after screenshots.
