2026-10-23 verification at d1ac364389. The browser fixture uses main’s disposable renderer. Its concurrency case now settles initial folder loads and resets the peak before requiring one refresh to start four queries. A serial-refresh mutant fails at that assertion (1 versus 4); all nine hook cases pass using the same actions/assertions with a temporary React DOM renderer in a simulated DOM. Scoped lint/format pass with existing warnings. No browser or running-client check was performed; older Chromium results and request-count probes below are historical.

Earlier validation counts, review verdicts, CI status and captures below refer to their original revisions; older “current head” wording refers to those revisions. These focused local checks do not certify the whole suite.

Problem

With the Files panel open, every refresh of a folder whose listing is still in flight chained its own extra refresh onto that request. A refresh can come from the Refresh button or from an agent command settling. A burst of twenty overlapping root refreshes therefore issued twenty root listings, one after another. On a slow or remote connection this builds a backlog that delays the final tree update. Refreshing eight visited folders in a burst issued 189 listings.

Change

Overlapping refreshes of the same folder now share one follow-up rescan that runs after the in-flight listing, so a change made during the first listing is still picked up. A mutation during that rescan can queue one more. refresh now hands every visited folder to load, which already caps requests at four running at once, instead of running its own four-worker pool on top. The queued rescan is skipped after unmount.

Scope and approval

Small, focused performance fix (redundant, serialized listings), so it uses the no-prior-issue exception. One hook. This touches the same file as #18211 (persisting expanded folders) but a different part of it. Whichever merges second may need a trivial rebase.

Historical verification at af257ce

Historical test-runner compatibility follow-up at af257ce:

  • Replaced the removed react-test-renderer dependency with React DOM and moved the hook suite to useDirectoryEntries.browser.test.tsx, so CI runs it through the browser project. Production code is unchanged by this follow-up.
  • Compiler-enabled jsdom fallback: all 9 tests pass. With the same migrated tests against base 07cb902, 8 fail and 1 passes. All five root-burst samples measured 20 listings on base and 2 on candidate, excluding the initial mount listing. The eight-folder burst measured 189 versus 19 total listings; peak concurrency is 4 on both revisions. Controlled responses, no sleeps.
  • Web tsc-rs --noEmit -p apps/web/tsconfig.json, changed-test vp lint, vp fmt --check, and diff checks pass. The production hook's focused React Compiler coverage check passes (1 case; 1,015 unrelated cases skipped).
  • Historical CI is green: all current check runs succeeded or were skipped, including Build and Typecheck, Test Web, Lint, all eight server shards, and aggregate Check. The Test Web log confirms all 9 useDirectoryEntries.browser.test.tsx tests pass in Chromium (508 web suites / 7,865 tests pass overall).
  • Native vp test run src/components/files/useDirectoryEntries.browser.test.tsx --project browser cannot load configuration locally because existing dependencies lack @vitest/browser-playwright; the Chromium result above is from CI. No dependency installation or integrated client capture was performed. Local Node 24.12 is below the declared ^24.13.1 range. Git hooks are unavailable in the non-Git source fixture; explicit focused lint and format checks passed.
  • Macroscope approved that earlier head, af257ce, on eligibility alone; its verdict explicitly says no code objects were reviewed. CodeRabbit subsequently completed its review from the PR base through af257ce, selected the production hook and browser test, and reported no actionable comments. No fresh delegated independent review was launched because recovery instructions prohibit delegates.

Historical implementation verification and uploaded logs:

  • The original useDirectoryEntries.test.tsx ran the real hook, Effect atoms, appAtomRegistry, and executeAtomQuery with controlled listing responses and no sleeps. On main, 8 of 9 fail (log). With the fix all 9 pass (log), rerun after rebasing on current main.
    • 20 overlapping root refreshes make 2 root listings instead of 20.
    • An eight-folder burst makes 19 listings instead of 189, with at most 4 requests active.
    • A change made during the first listing or the follow-up still reaches the final entries, and unmounting cancels the queued rescan.
  • Reported original vp lint and typecheck in apps/web: clean.
  • Reported original independent review by Claude Opus 5.5 (high) through a T3 delegated task: no defects.

Current test migration: GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code; no fresh independent review.

Historical implementation: found by a GPT-6.1 Sol (high) audit and implemented by GPT-6.1 Sol (medium) in T3 Code. Reviewed by Claude Opus 5.5. Coordinated by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code via T3 Code. Agent-authored, sponsored by Alex Southwell.

Walkthrough

The hook now coalesces overlapping refresh requests per directory into one follow-up refresh. Non-refresh loads reuse the active request. Refreshes for reachable paths are scheduled without waiting for each path in sequence.

Measure concurrency during the refresh phase.

The test starts all eight folder loads before refresh(), so those loads can set peakQueries to 4. The remaining assertions do not require refreshes to start concurrently. Settle the folder loads first, reset the peak counter, and then refresh the loaded folders. Assert peakQueries === 4 for that phase to cover the changed dispatch behavior.

Addressed the refresh-concurrency review note in d1ac364. The test now settles all initial folder loads, resets the peak, and requires one refresh to start four concurrent listings before the overlapping burst. A serial-refresh mutant fails at that new assertion (1 versus 4); all nine hook cases pass in a simulated DOM with controlled responses. The temporary renderer substitutes only React DOM/act/disposal for the browser helper; no browser was launched. Targeted lint/format pass with existing disposable-variable warnings. Historical measurements and hosted Chromium results retain their original revisions; current hosted checks and client acceptance remain separate.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified exact head 53019a8e27c9e754436359dafe3428589c21a445 on a disposable linux boat vm, against github/main at 575579d68a. ran one background dev server at a time, installed dependencies in both checkouts, and drove the web app with the repository’s playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome.

the project and threads were created through the app. real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns created the git repository’s files and exercised subsequent mutations. no mocks, fixtures, replay provider, or source changes.

  • reproduced main’s backlog: 20 clicks on "refresh workspace files" produced 20 serialized root listings, ending at 21.022s. the exact pr head produced 3 listings, ending at 3.193s. both runs delayed actual listing responses by 1s without changing their contents. clicks continued into the follow-up scan, so a third scan on the pr was expected.
  • expanded eight folders, then clicked refresh 20 times rapidly: 18 listings total, two per visited directory, with peak concurrency exactly 4.
  • a real codex turn created root and nested files, renamed a file, and deleted another using three shell commands. the open tree updated automatically without manual refresh. search and opening the created file showed its exact provider-created contents.
  • closed files while a listing was pending after 20 refresh clicks: zero queued follow-up requests started after closing. reopening files loaded the updated root successfully.
  • remote blacksmith-check: all 6 existing directory-hook browser tests passed in chromium. vp run check:changed 45d29b45fe9ee7303fcdff86fc150b4a021ed823 passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, focused tests, and react compiler coverage. hosted checks observed at this head: 33 successful, zero failing or pending.

native desktop shell, ios/android, macos/windows, and other provider adapters were not exercised on this linux vm. remote/relay/tunnel transport, reconnect, and filesystem error paths were not exercised; the slow-connection comparison delayed real listing responses on the local web connection. no merge or source changes were made.

* fix(web): play completion sounds without delay (pingdotgg#29146)

Completion alerts waited two seconds after the client received a completed thread state. Audio was also fetched and decoded only when an alert needed to play, adding a first-play delay.

Notify immediately when the thread shell reports completion, and preload both sounds when a user gesture unlocks audio. Keep completion deduplication and suppression for existing, archived, and stopped runs.

This intentionally removes the continuation grace for completion alerts. A completed run can now notify before an automatic continuation starts. The sidebar's two-second placement grace and server settlement behavior remain in place.

Validation: `vp run check:changed` passes after merging current main, including 40 affected tests, formatting, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and React compiler checks. Tests cover immediate completion, duplicate suppression across reconnects, preloaded audio reuse, and retrying failed loads on alerts without retrying on every gesture. Audible timing has not been verified in a live client.

Model: GPT 6.1 Sol. Harness: Codex through T3 Code.

* fix(web): preserve scroll position when expanding work details (pingdotgg#29166)

* fix(server): Claude threads no longer join the Claude session that launched T3 (pingdotgg#29169)
