Scheduled tasks could not run at a specific date and time. The only options were an interval, a daily or weekday time, or a webhook. So "run this Friday at 3pm" had to become a daily task that you delete later.

Now a task can run Once at a date and time:

  • New schedule type { type: "once", runAt }. runAt is an ISO time with an offset, stored in UTC. The task runs at that time, then has no next run. If the server is offline at that time, it runs when it is back, like intervals.
  • Saving an enabled one-time task with a past time, or turning one back on after its time passed, fails with "The run time has passed. Pick a time in the future." Editing the title or prompt of a task that already ran still works and does not run it again.
  • Web: a Once mode with a date and time field in your local time zone. Mobile: a Once mode with Date and Time rows.
  • schedule_task (MCP) lists the new type, so agents can schedule one-off work.
  • Older servers reject once, so a new oneTimeSchedules environment capability gates the option on web and mobile.
  • A run's completion now reads the task and writes its result in one transaction. A save that races a finishing run keeps the run's next time, so a one-time task cannot run twice.
Form Before it runs After it runs
Once mode in the task form Task row with next run in 3 minutes Task row after the run: not scheduled, succeeded
Mobile form Mobile list

  • Issue #13439 and PR #23636: Claude CronCreate one-shots die with the Claude process. Agents can now use a once task instead, but Claude's own crons are still lost.
  • Discussion #23309: bound a schedule with an end time or run limit. once covers a single run, not bounded intervals.
  • Discussion #21660: far-future runs should start in a fresh thread. It assumes a once type, which now exists.

Proof: service tests cover one run, no second run, past-time rejection, a manual run that overlaps the run time, restart recovery, saves that race a finishing run or a concurrent pause, a row replaced mid-run, and a webhook redelivery after a failed start. Web logic tests cover the date-time round trip and a time skipped by daylight saving. Contract tests reject missing offsets, impossible days, and out-of-range years. In a dev server, a task made in the web form fired from the real scheduler at the set minute, started one thread, and then had no next run. New mcp-tool-use eval case schedule-one-time-date: 0/2 on main's text, 3/3 on the final text, on GPT-6.1 Sol. On an iOS simulator, a task made in the mobile form for 5:00 AM on Nov 1 saved as 13:00 UTC, which is correct because daylight saving ends that morning.

The MCP tool list grows by 54 bytes (the once enum value, the runAt field, and the trigger hint). That needs the agent-context-increase label.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 2 passes with GPT-6.1 Sol. Sol verdict: approved

Walkthrough

Scheduled tasks now support one-time schedules across contracts, server behavior, and web and mobile settings. Editors provide date and time controls. The server normalizes run times and rejects enabled schedules whose run time has passed.

Test the automatic due run, not a second manual run.

The call to runNow does not establish that the scheduler fires at runAt or that it avoids a second automatic run. Drive the registered scheduler past the due time and assert the resulting run count and cleared next run.

As per coding guidelines: “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.” As per path instructions: “Test behavior that can break, at the lowest layer that fails on main.”

Outside diff Use the interrupted run's start time during one-time recovery.

Use the interrupted run's start time during one-time recovery.

When a manual run starts before runAt, startup recovery uses the restart time in nextRunAt(decoded.success, now). If restart occurs after runAt, Schedule.ts returns null, so the pending scheduled occurrence is lost.

Use the persisted lastRunAt for once schedules. A scheduled run starts at or after runAt, so this does not replay an already-consumed scheduled occurrence.

Cover automatic one-time dispatch.

The test parks the scheduler with ServerActivation, Effect.never and calls service.runNow twice. It therefore does not exercise the registered runDueTasks path. Its assertions check only nextRunAt; they do not prove one automatic launch or prevent a second scheduled launch.

Add a focused test that activates the scheduler, advances the clock to runAt, and asserts runCount is 1 after dispatch and remains 1 after another scheduler pass.

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

The reservation gap found in this PR's review is fixed in #28474, merged as ce9e016. runTask and the pending webhook dispatch now take and release their in-memory reservations in Effect.acquireUseRelease, so an interrupt can no longer leave a task marked busy. The start-time read from this PR stays before the reservation.

Verified by two focused tests that fail on the old main, plus all 102 scheduled task tests and CI on the merged head.
