What's fixed

Microphone settings offered recording permission and input ordering even when Apple's on-device transcription was unavailable and the composer hid its microphone. Under CONTRIBUTING.md's small, focused obvious-bug exception, the page now reuses the composer's availability check to explain why microphone permission cannot enable unavailable voice input. Supported devices keep their existing settings. This does not add transcription support to unsupported hardware.

Before

Base 82b10d546c1041d8eff40425f076d61f608d518f, iPad Pro 13-inch M5 simulator, iPadOS 27.0, T3 Code Dev 2.2.0 build 1. Exact base JavaScript ran on the prebuilt native client. The native API reported unavailable without capability mocks or permission changes. Opening Settings > Microphone still offered permission and input ordering. The tap is at 0:00.6 and the controls appear by 0:01.2.

After, fresh native build from the exact head

Head 4a6c23d319a42ebd23eb1993eb369d39fa8d3ba9, built on shiv with Xcode 27.1, Debug arm64 simulator, and installed on the Simlock iPad Pro 13-inch M5 running iPadOS 27.0. App 2.2.0 build 1. Both native code and the cleared-cache Metro bundle came from this exact head. This recording replaces the earlier head recording that reused a cached native client.

The continuous 43.83-second recording starts on a connected, completed Replay thread with the normal composer and no microphone. Settings is tapped at 0:11.89, then Microphone at 0:24.64. The explanation appears by 0:25 and stays visible through the end. Replay's canned reply is test content, not a claim about tests run for this PR.

Read-only runtime observations confirmed AppleTranscription.isAvailable("en-IN") === false, getLocalVoiceTranscriber() === null, a live environment connection and idle dictation. No capability mocks, availability overrides or permission changes were used.

Native build verification

Run r_icuswtflnexmw000 on physical shiv. The checkout was clean before and after building and at teardown. Tree fbb97f02e5e06729c30bc93c0861123d627c7f97. Xcode 27.1 build 27A9275, SDK iphonesimulator27.1.

Normal vp install --frozen-lockfile passed without --ignore-scripts. The dependency's supplied postinstall and RaTeX vendor script restored the pinned native assets and verified their SHA256 checksums. No package, configuration or native module pins changed. An empty task-local artifact directory forced the repository's unchanged resolveArtifact helper through its native build path, rather than accepting a cache hit.

No cached client for ios/development/887f84d7e8ee2e1063658bf884c9d17f60d6cbb3. Building it once for every machine (5-15 min)

Native fingerprints before and after were both 887f84d7e8ee2e1063658bf884c9d17f60d6cbb3, and the helper's own input verification passed. The newly built artifact was installed for the recording. Executable SHA256 b52bdf256c362af6bb409a6e857336f5a02a8ae5780b0e0c8eecb3173c135f23; debug dylib SHA256 dc38a38797a29c28b72c1789b543915cf8d880d70b7406c797de641a653e2321. The earlier fresh-build limitation is resolved.

Android regression and checks

Physical POCO F4, Android 14, refreshed on head b79017298930b05e525712cc88fb28138b59c7af after the update from main. The repository's native-client check returned status: compatible with fingerprint 971743703b097b8870b39ff842d130f50b115eeb. APK SHA256 e59759d57dd9f3eaf561fd36a8643b55f3b6e9e2575b3c8c7d63fd86f0522381. Metro served a cleared-cache bundle from this head. Settings navigation to General and back passed, and the iOS-only Microphone entry remained absent. This check used the dev client's existing settings state without changing preferences or submitting an agent turn. The 4.7-second recording shows that navigation and the settings list.

The existing transcription test, mobile typecheck and vp run check:changed passed. CI checks for this head passed, with nonapplicable jobs skipped. Macroscope approved. The proposed mocked static route test was declined under the repository's test guidance; the real unavailable-device branch is covered above.

All test servers and Metro processes were stopped, the test app was uninstalled, the pool lease was released, and disposable test state and builds were removed.

Unverified: the reporter's physical iPad eligibility and exact cause, and successful dictation on supported physical Apple hardware.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in the Claude agent harness; verified and independently reviewed with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness, through T3 Code.
