When a pull request comes from a different GitHub host than the checkout, clone lookup can select a same-named repository on the checkout's host. The resulting local branch or worktree can contain the wrong commit and track the wrong remote. Fixes #14939, following its maintainer triage scope.

Pass the resolved PR URL's host through both existing clone-lookup calls. GitHub uses that host, Forgejo/Gitea receives its existing host option, and missing or unparseable hosts preserve the default lookup. GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, custom ports and reused-worktree refresh remain outside this change. Both local and worktree checkout modes use the same server path; no client or wire-contract change.

Validation at 30d76f812f1ea65bb2535a5ef82e6c834be46047 (Linux, Node 24.15.0):

  • 174 tests passed across GitManager, GitHub provider and Forgejo provider suites on the exact final tree. Local bare repositories with distinct commits exercise same-repository/fork PRs and local/worktree modes; assertions check upstream URL, HEAD and file contents. Hostless URL and provider host-selection controls remain.
  • Focused typecheck, changed-file lint/format and independent source/provenance audit passed. The existing four-case forwarding-line negative control remains historical evidence; it was not rerun in this conflict refresh.
  • Main c2845de6 is integrated. A clean virtual merge with then-current main 8c0670b2 was verified; that newer main changes none of this PR's six feature files. The virtual merged tree was not runtime-tested.
  • Fresh CI and bot review were pending after the ordinary push. Earlier CI/review approvals cover older commits and do not certify this head. No live Enterprise authentication, network Git transport, or client/native journey was exercised.

Original implementation used Claude Code (exact model not recorded); earlier revisions also used Claude Opus 5.5. This conflict refresh and independent audit used GPT-6.1 Sol, high reasoning, through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at b79d2de

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Pull-request checkout and upstream setup now look up clone URLs on the pull request's host rather than the current checkout's host. Existing fallback behavior and host-specific credential safeguards remain unchanged, keeping the correction narrowly scoped.

Walkthrough

Pull request clone URL lookup now accepts an optional host. GitManager passes the host parsed from the PR URL during upstream configuration and PR head preparation. Tests cover Enterprise and default-host behavior in local and worktree modes.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 89878

The previously identified hostless-URL fallback problem is fixed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 89878

Host-aware lookup corrects repository selection without bypassing the existing credential checks. Cross-host failure recovery and reused-worktree refresh still have pre-existing identity limitations, so the change should not be understood as guaranteeing the correct pull-request head throughout preparation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed outcome concerns repository code, remotes, upstream configuration, and worktrees belonging to the selected checkout. Wrong-head selection can also affect code available to an existing setup-script execution path. No expanded administrative authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A pre-existing identity-loss path remains: failed materialization can fetch the same PR number from the primary checkout remote, and reused-worktree refresh independently prefers that remote's numeric pull ref. A conflicting ref can therefore supply the wrong head. The full comparison does not establish that this PR introduced or materially expanded that attackable scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — GitHub credential lookup normalizes the requested host. When a verified credential is pinned, a different host is rejected before the bearer token is attached or HTTP executes. Without a pin, the existing credential service resolves the requested host; pinning is not demonstrated as universal for preparation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Reused-worktree refresh protects dirty trees and local commits, records the previous commit before a non-fast-forward move, and uses a merge-safe reset. These pre-existing safeguards contain local data loss but do not validate that the fetched target belongs to the intended PR host and repository.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry host-qualified repository identity through pull-ref fallback and reused-worktree refresh, and reject identity mismatches before reporting success or running setup scripts. Exercise conflicting same-number refs and partial failures to validate the complete preparation lifecycle.

Replying to the two pre-merge warnings in the CodeRabbit summary:

  • GitLab host selection: intentionally out of scope. The triage on #14939 limits this fix to the GitHub clone-URL lookup and calls GitLab's checkout-host lookup a separate problem. GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps ignore the new optional host field, so their behaviour is unchanged. Adding GitLab here would put a second problem in this PR.
  • Docstring coverage (80%): this is a generic CodeRabbit default, not a requirement in this repository's contributing guide, AGENTS.md, or .coderabbit.yaml. The one new test helper already has a comment saying how it is used. We have not added boilerplate docstrings.

…com checkout

GitHub's clone lookup already reads the host of an Enterprise checkout, so
the regression now starts from a github.com checkout with a same-named
repository there; all four cases fail without forwarding the pull
request's host. Also cover Forgejo reading clone URLs on the given host.

Following up on the triage in #14939 (comment), at 082613da5f (main merged):

  • The PR URL's host is forwarded at both clone-lookup sites (branch materialization and upstream setup); an unparseable or hostless URL forwards nothing. The verified-credential host guard is unchanged.
  • Same-repository and fork regressions, in local and worktree mode, with a same-named repository on github.com. Since main's REST migration already reads an Enterprise checkout's own host, the test now starts from a github.com checkout with the PR on the Enterprise host, which is the case main still gets wrong: all four fail without the forwarding and pass with it.
  • Forgejo, which already accepted a host, is covered reading clone URLs on the given host. GitLab, custom ports, head verification and reused-worktree refresh stay out of scope as asked.

The body is updated with the current verification and the historical gh evidence marked as such.

thanks, saphid. the original implementation correctly forwards the resolved pr host at both clone lookups and preserves default lookup for malformed or hostless urls.

merged current main d92c437baa19 into the existing branch without rewriting contributor history. resolved the github provider test conflict by keeping both the clone-host regression and main's ssh-alias/context tests. the six-file feature diff remains unchanged in size: 278 additions, 5 deletions. production code was already small; no coverage or behavior was dropped.

verification at b79d2de061bc03341d69c0b3dad2c10d94661bea:

  • all four same-repository/fork × local/worktree regressions failed against current main's production code, selecting github.com's remote and commit instead of the enterprise host's.
  • restored implementation: 186 tests passed across gitmanager, github and forgejo suites. real local bare repositories verify upstream urls, exact commits and file contents.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed refs/remotes/github/main passed: format, lint, both knip checks, graphql generation checks, 18 affected-package typechecks and 188 tests in five existing files.
  • all 33 current-head ci checks passed; the pr is conflict-free. macroscope approved this head. two independent source reviews found no blockers or nits. coderabbit remains paused at an older revision; its green status is not a fresh review.

unverified: live enterprise authentication/network transport and web, desktop or mobile checkout journeys. no ui code changed. gitlab, custom ports, fallback identity and reused-worktree refresh remain outside the approved scope. saphid: forgejo's existing ssh-login matching can still constrain cross-host lookup when registry context carries the checkout's ssh remote; the unchanged provider's http host override is covered here.

Verified in a real dev environment

Partial verification on a disposable Linux Boat VM, using repo Playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome, the actual web client, running dev servers, real GitHub transport, and Codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy. No mocks or fixture repositories. No code changes.

  • Installed and ran github/main at 80a2351fcb909034e65a512dfabeb3cdfd367762 in a separate worktree. Added a real local clone through the app. A real provider turn confirmed its head and clean status. The branch picker resolved this PR's full GitHub URL, and Local checkout selected the correct fork head and upstream.
  • Stopped main's server before installing and starting the exact PR head b79d2de061bc03341d69c0b3dad2c10d94661bea, with isolated .t3 state. Repeated the ordinary GitHub fork Local checkout through the dialog and completed a real Codex turn.
  • Worktree checkout through the same dialog created a separate worktree. A real Codex turn inside that worktree confirmed its path, exact head, clean status, and expected upstream. Direct Git inspection corroborated these results.
  • Read current-head CI: 33 successful, 0 failing, 0 pending. These are CI results, not proof of the cross-host fix. No source changed, so no new check run was required.

ordinary github local checkout through the running web client

real codex turn confirms worktree path head clean status and upstream

Not verified

The changed cross-host behavior is unverified. This VM has credentials for github.com only, with no authenticated second GitHub host containing a same-named repository and branch with a distinct commit. I could not reproduce wrong-host selection on main or prove its correction on the PR without that prerequisite. Ordinary github.com checkout succeeds on both versions and does not establish the fix. I did not substitute a mock host, rewritten Git URLs, or unit tests for real-host evidence.

Native desktop, iOS/Android, live Enterprise and Forgejo cross-host authentication/transport, custom ports, pull-ref fallback identity, and reused-worktree refresh were not exercised. The primary verification outcome remains unverifiable here; the ordinary local/worktree and real-provider controls passed.
