What & why

Normalizes terminal copying across the legacy and v2 terminals without stripping meaningful selection content. Normal multiline selections lose trailing ASCII row padding; Unicode whitespace, tabs, CRLF, indentation, and blank lines are preserved. Single logical lines, rectangular selections, whitespace-only selections, and partial final-line spaces retain xterm's selected text.

Keyboard copy, context-menu Copy, and copy-on-select share the policy. Clipboard writes fall back to Electron's native clipboard when the browser API is missing or rejects; failed writes remain retryable. Runtime disposal removes the copy handler, and pending copy-on-select completion cannot flash success after disposal.

Builds on the original contributor's implementation in this PR. Refs #2896. This addresses row padding; it does not reconstruct application-emitted hard line breaks into a single logical code-block line.

How I tested it

  • bun run lint: passed.
  • bun run typecheck: passed, 42 tasks successful.
  • Focused terminal copy, clipboard, runtime registry, and copy-on-select tests: 46 passed.
  • Real macOS desktop: keyboard and context-menu copy remove 107 padding spaces, preserve indentation/blank lines, Unicode spaces, rectangular rows, and whitespace-only selections; copying still works after renderer reload.
  • Forced browser clipboard rejection in the real renderer: native Electron fallback wrote the expected text, including CRLF and U+3000. This is diagnostic fault injection, not an actual Linux/Wayland test.
  • bun run test: fails in existing desktop Git/worktree and shell-environment tests. The original PR head also has the same 34 failing cases: baseline 3,995 pass / 34 fail; updated branch 4,018 pass / 34 fail. No new failure cases.

Before/after screenshots, raw clipboard captures, reference comparisons, and validation evidence (Superset organization access).

Selection-mode detection uses an isolated adapter for the pinned xterm internals; unknown modes preserve raw text. Full multiline rows cannot distinguish intentional trailing ASCII spaces from padding, so normal multiline copying trims them; single-line and rectangular copying preserve them.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved terminal copying by removing trailing spaces while preserving indentation, line endings, wrapped lines, and intentional whitespace.
    • Standardized copy behavior across terminal views and selection modes.
    • Added clipboard fallback support when browser clipboard access is unavailable or fails.
    • Copy operations now handle failures safely and clean up when terminals close.
    • Prevented stale copy callbacks after disposal and ensured repeated identical selections can be copied.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for selection normalization, clipboard fallbacks, error handling, and lifecycle cleanup.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change centralizes terminal selection normalization and clipboard writing. Terminal integrations use the shared selection policy. Runtime and copy-on-select disposal behavior now prevents stale callbacks. Tests cover selection boundaries, clipboard fallbacks, and cleanup.

Changes

Terminal copy handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared selection and clipboard handling
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-copy.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-clipboard.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/*test.ts
Adds selection normalization for terminal modes and wrapped lines. Adds browser and native clipboard fallback handling. Expands copy and clipboard tests.
Terminal integration reuse
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-runtime-registry.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../useCopyOnSelect/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/screens/main/components/.../Terminal/*
Uses the shared selection utility for registry reads and copy-on-select. Adds injectable writers and disposal guards. Calls the shared copy handler directly from the terminal lifecycle.
Runtime copy handler lifecycle
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-runtime.ts
Installs the copy handler during runtime creation and disposes it during runtime teardown.
Context menu clipboard integration
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../usePaneRegistry.tsx
Uses the shared clipboard writer for the terminal context menu and logs rejected writes.

Log primary clipboard failures before fallback.

Both fallback paths silently discard the primary error. If the fallback also fails, the final log or rejection does not identify why the primary clipboard path failed.

  • apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-clipboard.ts#L15-L15: capture and log the navigator.clipboard.writeText error before native fallback.
  • apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/terminal-copy.ts#L78-L78: capture and log the clipboardData.setData error before the explicit writer runs.

Based on learnings, fallback logic must log the caught primary error before it runs the fallback.

Current source wins over PR descriptions: page ordering is newest-created first, search includes description, default CLI output remains a bare array, and the leaderboard automatically backfills since launch (there is no history-range picker). Slack thread commands and Mobile settings retain their availability qualifications. No assumption that every merged fix is already in the latest download.

## Validation

- bun install: passed; no tracked dependency changes.
- bun run lint:fix: passed, no code fixes.
- bun run lint: passed.
- bun run --cwd apps/docs typecheck: passed.
- Vale on all 16 changed docs: zero errors and warnings. Small pre-existing prose violations in touched pages were corrected to satisfy the SOP.
- git diff --check: passed.

Only apps/docs/content/docs/ and the required append-only root TODO log are included. No push or PR.

37 PRs drove changes; 66 were deliberately skipped as separate documentation work.

* docs: correct stale claims and consolidate weekly updates

Replace outdated remote-port and privacy claims, correct the 90-day leaderboard backfill cap and link settings location, and describe credential use and comment-watch registration accurately. Consolidate iPhone requirements and troubleshooting, trim repeated Pages prose, and keep launch effort details in the CLI reference.

Remove the #7764 startup entry because it does not identify a fixed release and its upgrade instructions are too vague. This supersedes that item in the original PR audit. Validate with docs typecheck, lint:fix, lint, Vale (zero errors or warnings), and git diff --check.

* docs: trim repeated explanations across user guides

* docs: clarify iPhone cloud workspace requirements
