fix(sandbox,host-service,cli): what a morning in a cloud workspace turned up - #7602
Conversation
…rned up An agent spent a morning getting Superset running in the cloud workspace "Hi" and listed what got in its way. Driving the same box with the CLI confirmed most of it, and reviewing the plans turned up more. This is that list, worst first. The display was reachable without a ticket. websockify listened on a published port with no authentication and Xvnc runs -SecurityTypes None, so the sandbox's own address served the desktop to anyone who had it — and that address is in every desktop ticket and stable across resumes. It now listens on loopback, the port is unpublished, and host-service proxies it behind the check every other route already passes. The noVNC web root goes with it: the renderer bundles its own client. Node could not reach GitHub from any cloud workspace. The firewall terminates TLS for the hosts it injects credentials into, and its CA is in the system bundle, which curl, git and bun read and node does not. Nothing set NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, so host-service's own pull-request lookups have been failing in production. superset-boot now defaults it. db:seed-dev has been broken on fresh installs since #7092: the role display name put @lingui/core/macro in the auth server's import graph, and the seed runs uncompiled. The name moves to the renderer, which compiles macros; the role data stays macro-free. Agents no longer die quietly with the box. host-service resumes the sessions whose terminals went with a stop, from startup, sandbox-only and capped — the desktop only ever resumed the pane someone opened, so a workspace reached from the CLI or a phone got nothing back. A start hook that cannot run now says so. The runner waited for a spawn, not a command, so a missing binary reported started: true on every boot. It watches the first seconds, reports a non-zero exit as a failure, and sandbox.status carries the hook's state and its log tail. Cloud workspaces get a setup of their own. setup.cloud.sh is to the cloud what setup.local.sh is to Docker: the shared steps, variables from the environment, a Neon branch per workspace, run from the start hook — so an environment built from this repository is provisioned, instead of the internal image carrying its own copy of the work. That copy is gone; a shim keeps older branches working. Also: setup.local.sh handed ports +14 and +15 to two services each, and ports.json is written through a check that refuses duplicates; a wake no longer re-runs boot on a box that already answers; Muse and zsh setup skip agents that are not installed; git identity is written to ~/.gitconfig so commits from outside a host terminal are still the person's; the organization in "not a member" says where it came from; publishing says who actually holds an entry path; and the CLI gains environments list, pages delete and agents read, which reads an agent's transcript, since a terminal snapshot is only the visible screen. CI has no zsh, and the wrapper tests assert the files are written regardless — the shell integration is not allowed to depend on what the host happens to have installed. The Muse change stays: there the write fails outright without the agent's own directory. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01FK6rLzBEUiHHXZWNmpQ2BP

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉 |
Unpublishing the desktop port left three call sites asking the provider for its address, and Sandbox.domain throws when a port has no route — so provision, describe and wake would all have thrown on any sandbox created after this shipped, while existing boxes kept working. The field is gone rather than guarded; nothing reads it now that the display is served from host-service. The boot-time resume read its candidate list before anything produced one. A stop leaves the terminal rows saying "active", and sweepDefunct only backfills bindings whose row already says otherwise; the reaper is what marks them, a tick later. The agents would have come back a boot late, which reads as "sometimes". It marks the stale rows itself now, and only resumes bindings the sweep just ended, so a terminal someone let die last week stays dead. The release probe checked for a script this branch deleted, so the pipeline could not have produced an image; and setup.cloud.sh ignored SUPERSET_RELEASE_PROBE, so every release would have left a Neon branch behind. The display proxy is sandbox-only: on a laptop it would have forwarded a caller's bytes to whatever held port 6080. A branch older than these scripts asks for superset-dev-stack by name and would have got a shim that found no scripts and did nothing. The environment keeps its own copy for those, and the start hook runs the repository's when they exist. Setup and the dev stack also stop sharing a fate: the hook's commands are joined with &&, so a database that failed to branch meant no editor either. Also from the review: the setup stamp is stripped from goldens, the git identity is written before the environment push resolves rather than racing the agent launch, the start-hook marker is written only once a hook has actually started so a failed one can be retried, the transcript reads the account the agent launched under and refuses a terminal from another workspace, and the "you already published this" message is gone — the publish target lookup matches the same row first, so it could never fire. `superset` now ships into the image as its own asset and sits on PATH, and an agent in a cloud workspace can use it without a person pasting a key. The credential is never in the box: the firewall adds it to requests for the API, exactly as it does for GitHub and the model providers, and the API resolves it to the workspace's creator. That grants an identity, and a header rule applies to every process in the box — an install script, a dependency, an agent following a bad instruction. So what it can reach is a list: the pages commands, the cloud workspace ones, environments, and who am I. Anything else is refused and told to run from a client the person signed into. The list, in api-credential.ts, is the boundary; widening it is a decision, not a detail. The binary is its own asset rather than part of the host-service tarball, which is one hash: folding it in would mean every CLI patch re-downloads the runtime on every box. Preserve literal newlines in environment values.
This conversion changes every actual newline to the two characters \n. Bash does not decode \n when it sources the generated double-quoted value. A multiline value, such as a PEM credential, then reaches setup and the dev processes in a corrupted form.
Keep the literal newline inside the quoted assignment, or use a representation that round-trips when .env is sourced.

Pin sandbox organization context to the credential.
protectedProcedure lets x-superset-organization-id replace the session organization after sandbox scope checks. Because allowlisted procedures such as page.create, page.publish, and page.pull use that value, a process in the workspace can act in another organization where the creator is a member. Reject a different organization header or always use ctx.sandboxCaller.organizationId for sandbox calls.

Security Misconfiguration
Reachability: External
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-319 — Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information
Reject non-TLS API endpoints before injecting workspace credentials.
NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL accepts any valid URL, including http:. apiHost() removes the scheme, and the firewall then adds the reusable workspace credential for that host. A network observer could capture it and invoke the workspace's allowed sandbox procedures. Require HTTPS before installing this rule, or ensure routing upgrades the request before header injection.

host extraction for valid HTTPS URLs, and do not inject credentials unless the
request is guaranteed to use TLS.

* docs: update weekly product documentation for September 23 Source of truth: live Notion SOP https://www.notion.so/3b3b9d5bf616810dbacaca7dd2305259 Window: GitHub merged:>=2026-09-16, through this run on 2026-09-23. gh returned 103 PRs (limit 1000, avoiding the SOP example’s 50-PR truncation). Workspace baseline: 2158895. Prior session stopped at a usage limit; the checkout was clean. ## Changes - Pages, CLI, and MCP: public sharing, workspace menus, origin labels, pagination, first-publish opening, version previews, mobile comments, and link handling: #7570, #7658, #7726, #7472, #7532, #7718. Files: pages.mdx; cli/cli-reference.mdx; mcp-server.mdx. - iPhone launch, requirements, setup, host states, and Pro checklist: #7703, #7686, #7697, #7661, #7642, #7494. Files: install.mdx; faq.mdx; overview.mdx; remote-access.mdx. - Editor save conflicts and Markdown link actions: #7711, #7621. Files: editor.mdx. - Terminal locations, copying, and ended-session recovery: #7712, #7709, #7618. Files: first-workspace.mdx; workspaces.mdx. - Slack plugin tools and gated thread follow-ups, queuing, mute and stop controls: #7583, #7585, #7586, #7588, #7592, #7594. Files: use-with-slack.mdx. - New CLI transcript, environment, and page deletion commands; connected-service plugins and MCP CLI migration: #7602, #7317. Files: cli/cli-reference.mdx; skills.mdx. - Startup recovery and pre-account workspace migration: #7764, #7649. Files: troubleshooting.mdx. Current source wins over PR descriptions: page ordering is newest-created first, search includes description, default CLI output remains a bare array, and the leaderboard automatically backfills since launch (there is no history-range picker). Slack thread commands and Mobile settings retain their availability qualifications. No assumption that every merged fix is already in the latest download. ## Deliberately skipped - [#7765](#7765) fix(host-service): report GitHub being unreachable as unavailable, not a 500: Reliability or visual fix restores expected behavior; no new workflow or necessary workaround to document. - [#7756](#7756) fix(pages): restore page.list's bare-array contract for released clients: Restores compatibility for released clients; checked the current listPaginated implementation when documenting #7726. - [#7749](#7749) fix(build): build every dist-types a filtered mobile typecheck needs: Internal build, tests, migration, developer tooling, or recovery plumbing; no new user-facing instructions. - [#7748](#7748) feat(mobile): refresh the App Store listing and load review creds from .env: Marketing/store copy, layout, or launch assets; no separate product-doc change. Small pre-existing prose violations in touched pages were corrected to satisfy the SOP. - git diff --check: passed. Only apps/docs/content/docs/ and the required append-only root TODO log are included. No push or PR. 37 PRs drove changes; 66 were deliberately skipped as separate documentation work. * docs: correct stale claims and consolidate weekly updates Replace outdated remote-port and privacy claims, correct the 90-day leaderboard backfill cap and link settings location, and describe credential use and comment-watch registration accurately. Consolidate iPhone requirements and troubleshooting, trim repeated Pages prose, and keep launch effort details in the CLI reference. Remove the #7764 startup entry because it does not identify a fixed release and its upgrade instructions are too vague. This supersedes that item in the original PR audit. Validate with docs typecheck, lint:fix, lint, Vale (zero errors or warnings), and git diff --check. * docs: trim repeated explanations across user guides * docs: clarify iPhone cloud workspace requirements
An agent spent a morning getting Superset running in the cloud workspace "Hi" and wrote down 18 things that got in its way. I drove the same box with the CLI, checked each claim against the code, sent the agent my verdicts and let it push back, then had the plans reviewed adversarially. This is the result, worst first.

The display was reachable without a ticket. websockify listened on a published port with no auth, behind
Xvnc -SecurityTypes None. The sandbox's own*.vercel.runaddress served noVNC and accepted the VNC socket with no credential; that address appears in every desktop ticket's claims and does not change across resumes. It now listens on loopback, the port is unpublished, and host-service proxies/desktop/websockifybehind the check every other route passes.
