What & why

A parked terminal could lose its recovery path when the reaper marked its absent PTY exited before reattachment. Ended panes then offered Reconnect against the same dead ID. Layout synchronization also treated a remote pane removal as another local kill command.

This change coordinates creation and disposal through one per-terminal queue, keeps missing sessions recoverable, and separates explicit pane-close commands from synchronized removal. Ended panes offer New shell, which creates a fresh session and preserves bounded history from the previous runtime.

  • Durable cancellation wins over delayed creation, including a close before the session row exists. Pending ownership prevents another workspace from cancelling that creation. Queued operations retain ownership; completion and failure release it.
  • Missing-session reconciliation requires consecutive observations and skips startup, while startup still processes durable kill requests. Pending-disposal bindings stay out of hydration. Disposal preserves an existing internal account-restart candidate; explicit termination suppresses resume.
  • Tab closure batches explicit close notifications and isolates each callback failure. Synchronized removal only releases view resources. Explicit session removal also clears workspace-run bookkeeping.
  • Replacement captures history before asynchronous creation, so tab switching and runtime eviction cannot erase it. Repeated clicks coalesce, failed creation preserves the old pane, and cancelled replacements are disposed with a bounded retry and excluded from automatic adoption.

No database migration. Explicit pane close retains existing termination semantics. This does not add distributed view leases or general pruning of adopted panes. If both cancellation kill attempts fail, the error propagates and a surviving shell remains manually discoverable under Background terminals.

Validation

  • Final multi-client verification: six new real host/PTY scenarios passed (shared input, disconnect/reconnect, explicit cross-client kill, stale-ID isolation, workspace ownership, phone visibility/sizing, and natural exit). Existing create/sequence suites: 25/26 passed; the legacy replay timeout passed an isolated rerun. This covers mobile's protocol, not the iPhone UI.

  • Final cleanup ensures killed panes are removed even if workspace-run bookkeeping throws; 352 renderer/recovery tests, desktop typecheck, Biome and diff checks passed locally.

  • 710 focused tests pass: 244 host, 114 panes, 352 renderer/recovery. All three changed packages pass typecheck; repository lint and diff checks pass. Earlier terminal-router integration run: 9/9 passed.

  • Independent worker: two pending-ownership regressions failed before the fix; 19/19 real-daemon create-on-attach tests pass afterward. It also reviewed binding reconciliation and callback isolation without finding further issues.

  • Regression assertions reproduced callback short-circuiting, late history capture, and pending-disposal hydration/binding errors before their fixes.

  • CDP before/after: restored the original renderer implementation, held creation after the host response, switched tabs with the parked-runtime cap set to 1, and verified eviction of the ended runtime. Original code lost history; fixed code retained it and executed a command in the new shell. Screenshots visually inspected, numeric evidence agrees, zero captured renderer errors. Test UI interactions used actual mouse/keyboard input; cap adjustment and delayed response were controlled fault injection.

  • Earlier CDP coverage includes eight recovery cycles (exit codes 0/42), renderer reload, split-pane isolation, ten tab switches, create failure, duplicate clicks, cancellation during auto-adoption, and a lost response after a committed kill. Evidence is retained locally because screenshots contain unrelated workspace names.

  • Latest full native terminal run: 77/80 passed. Two disposal-related failures coincided with daemon process-inspection failures under concurrent load; both passed serial reruns. The remaining empty-input BAD_REQUEST assertion also failed with the original implementation. Full native-suite success is not claimed.

  • Broad host runs previously stalled in native filesystem-watcher tests; full monorepo success is not claimed. Multi-window behavior has unit coverage but was not exercised through CDP.

Checklist

  • Conventional commit title
  • Repository lint and typechecks for all changed packages
  • Regression tests and independent agent verification
  • PR CI passed on a14034e; final cleanup validated locally
  • User explicitly requested admin merge

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds ended-session terminal replacement, pane-close notifications, lifecycle serialization, confirmed missing-session reconciliation, durable disposal handling, tests, and translations.

Changes

Desktop terminal replacement and pane lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ended-session replacement flow
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/terminal/..., apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../TerminalConnectionIndicator.tsx, .../replaceEndedTerminal/*
Ended sessions show a New shell action. Replacement terminals preserve serialized scrollback and update the pane after asynchronous creation.
Replacement workflow validation
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../replaceEndedTerminal/*
Tests cover successful replacement, request coalescing, failures, stale panes, disposal, cancellation, and removed tabs.
Pane-close event handling
packages/panes/src/core/store/*, packages/panes/src/react/..., apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../usePaneRegistry.tsx
Pane stores notify listeners of actual closes. Workspace callbacks distinguish closure from removal, and terminal runtime cleanup uses the new callbacks.
Terminal status translations
packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
Locale catalogs add translations for terminal creation failure, new shells, and ended sessions.

Host terminal lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lifecycle state and operation primitives
packages/host-service/src/terminal/lifecycle/*
New helpers classify lifecycle state, serialize operations per terminal, retain workspace ownership, and confirm repeated missing observations.
Creation and disposal coordination
packages/host-service/src/terminal/terminal.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/terminal/*, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/terminal-agents/*, packages/host-service/src/terminal/*test*
Creation and disposal use lifecycle coordination, durable disposal state, guarded exit updates, workspace checks, and post-open lifecycle checks.
Missing-session reconciliation
packages/host-service/src/terminal/reaper/*, packages/host-service/src/terminal-agents/persistence.ts
The reaper requires confirmed absence, separates recoverable sessions from disposed sessions, preserves active rows for recovery, and excludes sessions pending disposal from live bindings.

Some explicitly disposed terminal processes may remain running briefly after restart, and rare removal failures can leave stale panes open. Localization issues also remain in terminal failure and status messages, so these should be addressed before merge unless accepted.

🟡 Minor · Filter pending-disposal sessions in load(). · persistence.ts:342-346

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter pending-disposal sessions in load(). load() excludes only disposed sessions and ended bindings. It can return an active binding with a non-null disposeRequestedAt. TerminalAgentStore hydrates that binding, and hasAgent() then treats it as live while list/find queries hide it. Add isNull(terminalSessions.disposeRequestedAt) to the load() predicate.

Run the terminal reaper once during startup.

When the host restarts after persisting disposeRequestedAt but before the daemon closes the session, startup calls only syncPortScans. The interval does not invoke run until REAP_INTERVAL_MS elapses, so the live daemon session can remain open for up to five minutes. Invoke the existing run once before starting the interval. This preserves the missing-session confirmation flow while closing live sessions with durable disposal intent promptly.

Translate the startup failure path through this message.

WorkspaceInitEffects.tsx still passes "Failed to create terminal" directly to toast.error. Non-English users therefore see English on terminal setup failures. Replace the raw string with the i18n lookup for this message.

Preserve terminal history during asynchronous replacement. replaceEndedTerminal() awaits create() before prepareReplacement(). During this wait, TerminalPane can call detach(), which parks the ended runtime and schedules LRU eviction. If the parked-runtime cap is exceeded, eviction can dispose that runtime. prepareReplacement() then returns without setting initialBuffer, while the pane still switches to the replacement terminal. Capture the history before awaiting create(), or retain the previous runtime until preparation completes.

terminal’s serialized history is captured before awaiting create(), or otherwise

preparation finishes. Ensure preparation still sets the replacement entry’s
initialBuffer and the pane receives the preserved history even if detach()
occurs during asynchronous replacement.

Authorization Bypass

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-862 — Missing Authorization

Bind pending terminal IDs to their create workspace. killSession inserts a disposed tombstone with the supplied workspace when no row exists. createTerminalSessionInternal creates its row only after daemon.open, so the tombstone can cancel an in-flight create from another workspace.

Add a pending-ownership registry beside lifecycleOperations. Register the workspace after initial ownership checks and before the first await. In killSession, reject a mismatched pending owner before inserting the tombstone. Remove the registry entry in cleanup. Preserve tombstone creation for matching and not-yet-started creates.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate failures for each closed pane.

If one onAfterClose callback throws, the exception exits this loop. The store catches it only after the remaining panes are skipped. A multi-pane tab closure can therefore omit shutdown callbacks for later panes.

Catch errors inside the loop so each pane receives its callback.

Current source wins over PR descriptions: page ordering is newest-created first, search includes description, default CLI output remains a bare array, and the leaderboard automatically backfills since launch (there is no history-range picker). Slack thread commands and Mobile settings retain their availability qualifications. No assumption that every merged fix is already in the latest download.

## Validation

- bun install: passed; no tracked dependency changes.
- bun run lint:fix: passed, no code fixes.
- bun run lint: passed.
- bun run --cwd apps/docs typecheck: passed.
- Vale on all 16 changed docs: zero errors and warnings. Small pre-existing prose violations in touched pages were corrected to satisfy the SOP.
- git diff --check: passed.

Only apps/docs/content/docs/ and the required append-only root TODO log are included. No push or PR.

37 PRs drove changes; 66 were deliberately skipped as separate documentation work.

* docs: correct stale claims and consolidate weekly updates

Replace outdated remote-port and privacy claims, correct the 90-day leaderboard backfill cap and link settings location, and describe credential use and comment-watch registration accurately. Consolidate iPhone requirements and troubleshooting, trim repeated Pages prose, and keep launch effort details in the CLI reference.

Remove the #7764 startup entry because it does not identify a fixed release and its upgrade instructions are too vague. This supersedes that item in the original PR audit. Validate with docs typecheck, lint:fix, lint, Vale (zero errors or warnings), and git diff --check.

* docs: trim repeated explanations across user guides

* docs: clarify iPhone cloud workspace requirements
