Closes #29487.

Evidence follow-up completed: native desktop baseline and packaged final-head recordings, plus Maria's original real-provider recording and persistence readback.

PR descriptions render task lists as read-only even when the viewer can edit the description. This connects their checkboxes to the existing description update command on web, desktop and mobile, gated by both edit access and the command's update permission.

Both clients keep the optimistic body through queued saves and the next host reading. Saves run in click order; failures show the existing error and return to the host body. Web's editor opens with pending ticks and retains typed text after a failed manual save. Mobile holds Edit description until save/readback finishes. Prose chunks retain source offsets so tasks after attachments update the right marker. Native taps must uniquely match a source task's text, prior state and possible view-local position; ambiguous or attachment-replaced labels are refused.

Follow-up at d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9 keeps mobile Edit disabled until an actual host readback has settled, including when older servers omit observedAt. Local read versions stay separate from server freshness timestamps; offline cache reads cannot acknowledge a save. The mobile tab is documented as Overview. vp run check:changed passes with 160 tests, 39-package typechecking and React compiler checks. Independent review found no further issues in this correction. The narrow iOS success/failure readback pass is verified in the evidence below. Earlier recordings below retain their exact source commits; native mapping and web/desktop behavior are unchanged by this follow-up.

This addresses the same report as #29488. The chunk offsets, shared task-marker module and native position/text matching build on mcathala's work, credited in the commit. This version also handles failed-save coordination, a later host uncheck, duplicate native labels within a list, and the wrong-task save reproduced on iOS after a code block.

Verification

Final-head packaged desktop verification, d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9, macOS 27.0.1 arm64. The same native click fails on main 8b44f42b14c8e273156474a924ccf29680dd7857 and saves only the first task on candidate. In the unsigned packaged 0.1.6 app, the check survives native View > Reload and appears in the reopened editor. Loaded t3code://app/ JavaScript matched the ASAR asset hash. Build identity, action/readback transcript and limitations. Background Cmd+R was ineffective; the native menu performed the verified reload. These desktop writes were intercepted.

Candidate 91472ab96f8773b5059f5e02e5fa6c119eae29b9; original baseline 0847a448fdca5a688720050ca706cbbd37e6347e. vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, typecheck of 39 affected packages, 10 test files/103 tests and the React compiler check. No repository-wide check was run.

Failing-before tests covered the missing task interaction, body offsets, save/readback lifetime, failure barrier, preserving manual edits, later host unchecks and native task matching. For the final attachment-label regression, the existing refusal test returned marker offset 2 before the guard and null afterward; all five shared tests pass. Two independent Codex review rounds and follow-up reviews of the corrections have no remaining findings.

Our recordings use isolated state and synthetic descriptions, with description writes intercepted locally and public PR metadata read-only. Maria's separately attributed recording below used real GitCafe writes and GitHub mirror readback.

Web, Chromium on Linux. Baseline boxes disabled; after the fix, ticks and later host updates render correctly.

Independent verification by Maria at 91472ab96f8773b5059f5e02e5fa6c119eae29b9 used Linux Chrome with real dev servers and the GitCafe provider. Her screenshots, recording and runtime transcript cover persisted checkbox writes confirmed by fresh GitHub mirror reads, rapid on/off, editor state, reload persistence, and a later external uncheck. This predates the mobile read-version correction. It provides real provider persistence evidence for the unchanged web path, alongside the intercepted-write recordings above.

Final mobile readback verification at d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9, iPhone 18 Pro simulator on iOS 27.0, native dev client 2.2.0 build 1 with fingerprint 887f84d7e8ee2e1063658bf884c9d17f60d6cbb3: recordings and results. With observedAt omitted, success and failure acknowledgements both completed while detail readbacks remained held. Edit stayed disabled until those reads were released, then opened with the correct checked or rolled-back body. I inspected the actual captures and fixture event records. The run timed out during reporting after both cases completed; its timeout is not treated as a passing command. The required cases were recovered and reviewed separately. Current-host behavior uses the same local read version; a separate current-host smoke was not repeated.

Limits

  • Ambiguous native labels and attachment-replaced labels cannot be toggled inline; Edit description remains available after readback. The observed iOS link/file-pill refusals were safe, but raw U+FFFC event payloads and the internal remount were not captured. The raw attachment guard has a failing-before unit test.
  • Our fixture runs did not test real host persistence. Maria separately verified GitCafe writes with GitHub mirror readback as linked above. The direct GitHub adapter, production permission denial, relay/tunnel, physical iPhone and signed release installers remain unverified. The final simulator was requested as iOS 27.0, but its exact running OS version was not independently captured.
  • Updates still replace the whole description, as Edit description already does. Concurrent host edits can be overwritten. On web, older servers without observation timestamps can briefly show stale text after a save. Mobile now holds the draft and Edit barrier until an actual settled host readback; the follow-up was verified on iOS 27.0 as linked above.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code; investigated, tested, reviewed and corrected with GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex (T3 Code).

The Summary tab rendered the description without a task toggle, so its
checkboxes were disabled on web and desktop and inert on mobile, even for
viewers who can edit the description.

Ticking a box now flips that marker in the description and saves it with
pullRequests.update, only when the viewer can edit the description and
holds the update permission. Both clients share one description draft in
client-runtime: it is shown while saves run and until the first host
reading after them, the same lifetime maintainer edits already use, so a
box ticked and unticked quickly cannot hide later host changes. Web
checkbox ticks and the description editor go through the same draft, so
the editor opens from the ticked body. Mobile disables Edit description
while a draft is in force, because that screen starts from the host copy,
and undoes a native tick it cannot trace back to the source.

Segments of a split body now carry their source offset, so a checkbox
after an attachment maps to the right marker. The task marker helpers
move to @t3tools/shared/markdownTaskList for mobile to reuse.

…e barrier

A failed manual save on web reset the description editor to the host's
body, because the editor followed the shared draft and a failure dropped
it. The editor now keeps the body it opened from, as it did before.

A failed save also dropped the draft while later queued saves were still
running, which re-enabled Edit description on mobile before those saves
and the reading after them. Each save writes the whole body, so a failure
now only loses the draft's body when no later save is running, and the
draft stays in force until the first host reading after the last save.

The native renderer gives code blocks, tables, quotes and media their own
views, and each view numbers its tasks from 0. A tap on a task after a code
block arrived as index 0, and the prefix text check let it match an
earlier, similarly named task, so the description saved the wrong box.

A tap now resolves only when exactly one task has the tapped text, the
state before the tap, and an index that fits some split of the document
into native views. Text must match one of the forms the renderers send:
the whole first paragraph on iOS, cut at a line break on Android. Anything
else is refused and the renderer's tick is undone.

Walkthrough

Editable pull-request descriptions now support task-list checkbox changes in web and mobile summary views. Shared Markdown utilities map rendered checkboxes to source markers. Description drafts track overlapping saves, preserve unsaved text after failures, and refresh pull-request details after saves settle.

Explanation

The title "fix(web, mobile): save pull request description checkbox changes" matches the main change. The diff connects task-list checkboxes in PR descriptions to the existing description update command on web, desktop, and mobile. It uses a conventional commit format and is specific. The title does not cover the native position matching or the readback handling, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active direct issue: #29487. The change enables task-list checkbox updates for editable pull request descriptions on web, desktop, and mobile. Web and mobile paths use the existing description update command. Permission checks keep boxes read-only without edit access or update permission. Shared marker mapping handles source offsets, duplicate labels, code blocks, attachments, queued saves, failed saves, and host readback. Tests cover these behaviors. The follow-up also separates local read versions from server timestamps and prevents offline reads from acknowledging saves.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support #29487. Shared markdown utilities support safe task-marker mapping. Client-runtime draft and read-version helpers support queued description saves and readback. Web, desktop, and mobile changes wire the behavior into the Summary or Overview description. Tests and documentation cover the feature. No unrelated change is demonstrated. The incremental repository diff was unavailable, so this conclusion uses the supplied whole-PR change summary and prior reviewed evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

PASS: The description clearly states the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, verification results, limitations, UI evidence, and agent attribution. It does not use the template’s explicit Problem, Change, or Scope and approval headings, and it does not identify a separate maintainer approval comment, but the required information is substantially present.

Address the existing whole-body update race at the provider boundary if concurrent edits must be preserved.

toggleTask builds the complete body from the cached description, and updateChangeRequest has no expected-version or merge semantics. A host edit after the detail read can therefore be replaced by a checkbox save.

The manual editor already has the same behavior, so this is not a new server-side defect. Passing detail.observedAt is not a valid fix without extending the update contract, and refreshing before the save does not close the race. Add expected-version or merge semantics to the provider contract and its implementations if preserving concurrent host edits is required.

native ios/android, electron, release packages, relay/tunnel, and other source control providers were not exercised on this linux vm. writes used git.cafe with github mirror readback, not the app's direct github adapter. save failures and denied-edit sessions were not induced against the live service. concurrent description edits still use whole-body replacement, as documented in the pr.

The whole-description concurrency limitation is confirmed and documented in the PR's Limits section. Checkbox saves use the existing description update operation, which has no expected-version or merge semantics. Preserving concurrent host edits needs a provider-contract change across its implementations, including the manual editor. I am keeping that work outside this checkbox fix; a pre-save refresh or an observedAt argument alone would not prevent the race.

For the older-host readback finding:

Addressed in d9231e2 with local host-read versions. Mobile now retains the draft and Edit barrier until an actual detail response has settled, including when the server omits observedAt. Offline cache reads cannot acknowledge the save, and server freshness timestamps are unchanged.

I used response versions rather than body equality because a later host edit can legitimately return a different body, and must end the draft. The focused regression covers a held response, structurally shared equal responses, offline cache, reconnect, and preservation of server timestamps. check:changed passes with 160 tests. The narrow iOS success/failure readback pass is queued; I will add its evidence before resolving this thread.

Verified the older-host readback correction at d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9 on an iPhone 18 Pro simulator running iOS 27.0. Native dev client 2.2.0 build 1, fingerprint 887f84d7e8ee2e1063658bf884c9d17f60d6cbb3; the installed bundle digest matched the build artifact.

The fixture omitted observedAt and held detail responses separately from write acknowledgements. On success, write 55 completed with only the first task checked, while detail 58 remained held and Edit description stayed disabled with Saving. Releasing the detail enabled Edit with the checked text, including after reopening.

ios-legacy-success.mp4

On failure, write 84 returned the existing error and the checkbox rolled back. With no writes pending and detail 88 still held, Edit stayed disabled after dismissing the alert. Releasing the detail enabled Edit with both tasks unchecked.

Failed save keeps the barrier until readback
Failed-save editor after readback

I inspected the recovered recordings, screenshots and fixture events. The job timed out during reporting after both cases had completed; its timeout is not counted as a passing command. vp run check:changed passed separately with 160 tests, and required CI passes at this head. The focused regression also covers offline cache, identical host responses and reconnects.

This verifies the readback finding. These writes were intercepted. The optional current-host smoke, production permission denial, relay/tunnel, physical iPhone and release builds were not exercised in this run.

Completed the remaining desktop evidence requests at d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9 on shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64.

  1. In native desktop PR Summary, the same background click at window position 279,390 leaves main 8b44f42b14c8e273156474a924ccf29680dd7857 unchecked with zero writes. The packaged candidate checks only the first task, saves one update and opens Edit description with [x] first and [ ] second.
  2. Maria's actual recording and real GitCafe persistence readback are attached separately, with their original tested commit. This desktop run uses intercepted writes and does not substitute for her real-provider verification.
  3. Native View > Reload reloads the packaged renderer. A fresh detail response, the Summary and the reopened editor retain the first check. The background Cmd+R attempt did nothing, so the recording uses the native menu instead. Read-only inspection confirmed a new renderer time origin and navigation type reload.

Packaged candidate editor after reload

The recordings begin with the native About dialog. Full commit bars and green click outlines are editorial annotations; the outlines mark the logged background input, rather than a captured cursor. About and interaction clips are joined in order. Baseline uses the Electron dev wrapper and baseline Vite assets; its About commit override matches the clean baseline checkout. Candidate uses the unsigned packaged app, its bundled renderer and the builder's unmodified embedded commit prefix. No Vite or commit override was used for candidate. All interaction used background native accessibility input; CDP was read-only.

I inspected the native recording frames, editor screenshots, action logs, bundled asset hashes and readbacks. An independent evidence audit found no remaining gap in these two cases. Original desktop profiles were restored with the same inodes; our apps, processes, detached worktrees and temporary build were removed.

Not exercised by this run: signed installers, direct GitHub adapter writes, relay/tunnel or production permission denial. Final iOS readback verification and the earlier Android/native mapping evidence remain linked in the PR body. Required CI at this head passes; check:changed previously passed 160 tests at this unchanged head.

Rechecked the base move through 95e53a54dbd312fea7e8a2ef94514dc5f1c8ee3d and then current main a07be97ab0753b2b5b0caecebba69d7f872594fa, with PR head unchanged at d9231e204583245f09194d2d9da8dd92b24077e9.

Only packages/shared/package.json overlaps this PR's changed files. Main switches typechecking to effect-tsgo tsrs --noEmit and removes the unrelated jose dependency; the PR independently adds the ./markdownTaskList export. The merge preserves all three. Compared with the automatic merge against the previous base, all other PR files are byte-identical. An independent source review found no behavior affected by this base move.

I validated a clean, conflict-free local merge of these exact head/base commits. This temporary commit was not pushed:

The new check covers compatibility with current main's compiler and dependency setup. The desktop baseline and packaged reload recordings, real-provider readback and final iOS readback recordings retain their stated source commits; they are not recordings of this temporary merge. No checkbox runtime changes require new recordings for this base move. Existing limitations in the PR body still apply.

The live PR remains open, nondraft and mergeable, with both review threads resolved, Macroscope approval on this head, successful required CI and no auto-merge enabled. The temporary checkout is being removed after validation.
