fix(mobile): iOS image previews open without waiting for the gallery - #29044
Unproven: a separate Quick Look zoom or dismissal defect was not reproduced. Physical iPhone and real cellular/private attachments remain untested.
Problem
Tapping an image should open that image while the rest of the gallery loads. PR image previews on iOS instead wait for every gallery URL and image download before Quick Look opens. In the controlled baseline, a fast selected image waited more than 21 seconds for a held sibling, without a loading view or close control.
Change
Open the selected image independently, show a cancellable loading page when needed, and deliver sibling URLs to the same presentation as they resolve. The visible page can interrupt a background download. Failed siblings show an error on their own page. Keep Quick Look's existing gestures and thumbnail transitions, the document/PDF fallback, and Android's URL-loading behavior.
Scope and approval
Refs #26662. This repairs the reproduced gallery-wide wait within the existing Quick Look preview. The JavaScript and native changes serve that same loading fix; the test configuration covers its platform-specific behavior. It keeps the existing viewer, gestures and document/PDF path. It does not claim to fix a separate zoom or dismissal defect.
No prior maintainer approval of this implementation is recorded. Maintainer scope review remains open. Macroscope also requests human review for progressive loading and the native-viewer state synchronization lint suppression.
Evidence
The PR overview uses 24 synthetic images injected only into an isolated backend response. No GitHub PR content was changed. The held sibling is image 01; image 00 is selected.
Before, baseline 9826dbb9904b2591bfbf60d1317486b59132f56b: the viewer waits for the sibling and remaining downloads.

After, final iOS build: selected image opens while a sibling is held, paging prioritizes the visible image, and pending/error messages leave the close control reachable.

Pending selection, isolated sibling failure, selected failure and reopen:

A held signed-URL response also leaves the selected image usable. Releasing it updates the current pending page:

Android regression: selected image, pinch zoom, paging through a pending sibling and close continue to work. Android keeps its existing wait for all signed URLs before mounting.

iOS document regressions at the final head
Recorded on shiv at b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8, using a newly built client on the Simlock iPhone 17e, iOS 27.0, with synthetic attachments and an isolated backend. These recordings close the two evidence-audit gaps.
Tap the ordinary PDF attachment card, see Quick Look display the PDF without another open action, then close back to the thread. This follows ThreadFeed's normal PDF branch through FilePreviewModal.
pdf-card.mp4
The registered attachment-screen deep link separately exercises automatic presentation as its URI resolves, then dismissal back to the thread. This route entry used AgentDevice's normal app deep link, rather than tapping a PDF card, which opens the modal directly. Neither recording uses the manual Open PDF toolbar action or invokes the native bridge directly.
pdf-attachment-route.mp4
Tap the ordinary unsupported .t3opaque attachment, see the format-specific "No preview for this file" fallback, open File actions > Save or share, dismiss the real iOS share sheet, and return to the thread. The successfully downloaded file reaches Quick Look's format check. Its refusal maps to the observed format-specific message. A download failure produces a different message. This route supplies onOpenError, so it displays AttachmentDocumentBody's fallback rather than the standalone modal alert.
unsupported-fallback.mp4
The fixture PDF is a valid one-page 779-byte PDF; the opaque file is 1660 bytes of unsupported binary data. No app source was changed. No real account, private attachment or agent turn was used.
Standalone alert recovery and saving to Files
Both flows below ran on shiv at exact head b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8, on the Simlock iPhone 17e running iOS 27.0. These original real-time recordings retain automation delays; they are behavior evidence rather than performance measurements.
The standalone modal uses the normal thread markdown-link path, without AttachmentFileScreen's onOpenError override. The fixture is valid WebM with Opus audio, .weba, which this iOS Quick Look cannot preview. The successful HTTP downloads returned 200; the alert shows the format-specific refusal message. Cancel returns to the thread, reopening produces the same alert, Save or share opens the real share sheet, and a supported PDF then opens and closes normally. The source path is markdown media classification, the standalone modal, and its native-error alert.
standalone-alert-recovery.mp4
From the ordinary PDF attachment card, open Quick Look, choose Share > Save to Files, save to On My iPhone, open Files, find the saved PDF, and open it in Apple's Preview app. The unique page shows T3 FILES AUDIT 26662 and ORBIT LIME 7391. Return to T3 and close its preview back to the thread. The saved file and source fixture are both 795 bytes with SHA-256 68cb92bb45bb8beab4f3dcab728a82153a0df377721596608dcbd297b369efcd. This verifies the saved file itself, beyond displaying the share sheet.

Current head 4dc5a0f77d98d7efcc93f92ec2694c69341c27ee, rebased onto 95e53a54dbd312fea7e8a2ef94514dc5f1c8ee3d. Rebase verification and test output records the script-conflict resolution, passing changed-file checks with the new typechecker, focused tests and independent delta review. All eight required CI checks and CodeRabbit passed at this head. The completed ready check also covers current base a07be97ab0753b2b5b0caecebba69d7f872594fa and its crypto/relay refactors.
The recordings below retain their original commit and build provenance. Gallery recordings are from 6bb0463855bdfbce747b95582f46d5dd8cfffc9f; document audit recordings are from b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8. The preview JavaScript and Swift implementation is byte-for-byte unchanged by the rebase. These recordings are not presented as a rebuilt app on the newer base.

The Android preview cases passed 3/3 with T3_MOBILE_TEST_PLATFORM=android vp test run --project react src/components/FilePreviewModal.test.tsx; the iOS variant also passed 3/3 during the follow-up check.
The standard mobile test script now runs the Android preview cases after the existing unit and iOS React suites. This addresses CodeRabbit R6, which identified that the default command skipped Android-specific assertions.
vp run check:changed passed on application commit 6bb0463855bdfbce747b95582f46d5dd8cfffc9f, including format, lint, knip, affected mobile/scripts typechecks and focused React tests. The follow-up manifest edit expanded local checking to 36 packages. Four unrelated typechecks exited with code 137 and the interrupted run did not complete; that attempt is not counted as a pass. All eight required CI checks passed on b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8. The CI Test log confirms the default mobile suites ran and the appended Android preview invocation passed all three tests. CI build/typecheck and native static analysis also passed.
vp test run --project react src/components/FilePreviewModal.test.tsx: 3/3 with the iOS transform and 3/3 with the Android transform. The iOS deferred-sibling case fails before the fix. These tests cover stalled sibling signing, sibling URL failure and selected URL failure.
Independent review resolved the stalled-signing and download-priority findings, verified Android keeps its original loading semantics, and found no remaining code blockers.

The PDF card, automatic attachment-screen presentation, unsupported-format fallback, share sheet and return all passed in the recordings above. The parent inspected representative recording frames and the UI transcript, including the final return frame. Owned backend/Metro were stopped, the test app and disposable connection removed, the pool lease released, and shiv's original clean checkout restored.
Manual document opening also passed on Android. Signing-failure behavior has source-test coverage; native 503 failure behavior ran on iOS. The document audit did not repeat the existing gallery/Android checks because application source had not changed.
Additional iOS audit run r_xxttqdxv4p7coq00: exact final head/tree above, synthetic isolated backend, no application source changes. vp run mobile:install ios --session <own-session> installed the cached client with fingerprint 4ffd1d1022eb67ab3998408619bc97b2754078da, reporting status: installed, source: local, seconds: 60. Installed executable/debug-dylib hashes independently matched the values from the preceding audit build. Metro bundled the exact head: iOS Bundled 1109ms apps/mobile/index.ts (4550 modules). The standalone unsupported alert, both alert actions, reopen, supported-PDF recovery, actual local Files save, saved-file content and byte-for-byte hash, and return to T3 all passed. The parent inspected contact sheets and independently decoded alert/saved-content frames from the original recordings. The fixture WebM is valid Opus audio, 19,996 bytes; a valid Ogg fixture was accepted by Quick Look during exploration and is not used as refusal evidence. Owned backend, Metro and fixture HTTP processes stopped; PR app and saved file removed by uninstall/lease wipe; original clean checkout/dependencies restored and task scratch removed. This run reused the verified cached client and performed no native rebuild.
The apps/mobile/vite.config.ts edit only registers and selects the platform for React tests. The added effect diagnostic suppression also requires human review under Macroscope policy.
Implemented by Opus 5.5 through Claude Code, with the Android scope correction, status spacing correction, testing and independent review by GPT-6.1-sol through Codex.

Walkthrough
Image previews now resolve URIs per item and can render progressively. On iOS, galleries can open while sibling images are pending, and native presentation updates items as URLs become available. Tests cover pending and failed image resolution on iOS and Android.

Summary
Preview types and URI resolution apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreviewModal.types.ts, apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreviewModal.tsx
Resolved previews distinguish documents from image galleries. The modal resolves gallery items individually, tracks their URIs, and retains local-file leases for cleanup.
Gallery rendering and validation apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreviewModal.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreview.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/MediaImagePreview.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreviewModal.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts, apps/mobile/package.json
The modal renders available gallery items progressively on iOS and waits for all image URIs on other platforms. Image preview components use the typed gallery shape. Tests cover pending and failed item resolution on both platforms, and the test setup selects the target platform.
The iOS bridge passes optional URLs and sends later URL updates. Native presentation loads available items one at a time, tracks page changes, and shows loading or failure states.

Explanation
The title "fix(mobile): iOS image previews open without waiting for the gallery" matches the main change in the changeset. The Swift and TypeScript changes let the selected iOS image open while sibling URLs are still resolving. They add progressive gallery loading through presentFiles and updateFile, and the tests cover the deferred-sibling case. The title is concise, specific, and follows conventional commit style. It is 68 characters, within a typical length.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely: it has a Problem section (the gallery-wide wait for iOS image previews, with a 21-second held-sibling baseline), a Change section, a Scope and approval section that links issue #26662 and states that no prior maintainer approval is recorded, and an extensive Verification section with commands, CI results, devices, and recordings. Gaps: the template asks for an explicit maintainer approval link or comment for scope, and the author states none is recorded, so the scope requirement is not met. The description also leaves the agent/model attribution at the end, which the template requests, so it is present. The verification section is very long and mixes several commits and provenance notes, which makes the exact state under test harder to follow, but it describes concrete checks and observed results.
Resolution
Add a link to the triaged bug issue #26662 showing maintainer approval of the direction and scope, or a discussion with explicit maintainer approval including the approval comment. The author currently states that no prior maintainer approval is recorded and that maintainer scope review remains open. Alternatively, explain why the change qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug, which the current description does not argue. Consider shortening the Verification section and stating clearly which commit the final evidence covers.

Add an Android run of the preview tests to the test workflow.
apps/mobile/package.json runs the React tests without setting T3_MOBILE_TEST_PLATFORM. In apps/mobile/vite.config.ts, an unset variable selects iOS. FilePreviewModal.test.tsx reads the same variable, so the default run covers only the iOS configuration. The Android-specific delayed-gallery and failed-sibling assertions run only when the caller sets T3_MOBILE_TEST_PLATFORM=android.
Add a script or CI step that runs the React project with T3_MOBILE_TEST_PLATFORM=android. This keeps the Android path under regression coverage. Without it, a change to the Android behavior can pass the standard test command.

R6 fixed in b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8. The mobile test script now runs the existing unit/React suites followed by the three Android FilePreviewModal cases, so the normal CI Test job exercises the Android assertions. Focused iOS and Android runs passed 3/3 each. Application and native source are unchanged.
The local check:changed attempt expanded to 36 packages after the manifest edit; four unrelated typechecks exited with code 137 and the interrupted run did not finish. I am relying on the required CI checks for this head rather than counting that attempt as a pass.
Rechecked base drift from d890e5c40120769badcf18bff6d1ac983c8f40c7 through current main 647bd148b3fbd7c8b57a10fd41ae6d5fc7b35cc1, with PR head unchanged at b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8.
The merge is clean. Its candidate tree is 928d83caf02fb696358bb89df92a98b7bf8c02c0. The only directly overlapping file is the Vite test configuration: main adds AppBar test discovery, and the merged configuration retains this PR's preview test and platform selector. Independent review found no new blocker or should findings.
The adjacent file-screen, thread and inspector changes preserve preview callbacks. Revision-aware thumbnail URLs leave the preview's explicit URL refresh path unchanged. The native Quick Look implementation, file-preview components and relevant native package versions did not change, so the existing recordings remain evidence for the exact PR head. They do not represent a rebuilt app on the newer-base merge candidate.
Verified on corex, Node v26.12.1 and Vite Plus 1.4.0, after vp i installed the candidate lockfile. Both effect and mobile @effect/atom-react resolved to 4.1.2. The tested index tree matched the merge candidate before and after all tests. All 24 selected tests passed, with exit 0 from every command.

All eight required checks still pass at the published head. The PR is open, non-draft and mergeable, with no unresolved review threads, auto-merge or merge queue entry. CodeRabbit has no outstanding actionable finding. Macroscope's human-review request remains visible.
No native client or device was started for this base check. Existing iOS/Android recordings and their build provenance remain in the PR body. Physical iPhone, production cellular/private attachments and a separate zoom/dismissal defect remain unverified. The temporary merge was aborted after testing and the isolated checkout restored clean, including its original dependency versions. The PR branch was not changed.
Tapping an image in a screenshot-heavy PR description looked dead for up to
~20 seconds on iOS. The native presenter downloaded every gallery image one
after another before showing Quick Look, and a sibling whose URL could not be
resolved closed the whole preview.
- iOS presents the selected image as soon as it is ready, or a loading page
after 250 ms, then downloads the rest nearest-first behind it. A sibling that
fails shows its own message instead of closing the viewer.
- Single images also take this path; documents and PDFs still download first
so Quick Look can refuse them before presenting.
- FilePreviewModal only closes when the opened item fails to resolve; failed
siblings drop out of the gallery.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Opening a gallery image still waited for every sibling's signed URL, so one
slow sibling kept the viewer closed. On iOS, a page the user swiped to also
waited behind whatever background download was in flight.
- Image galleries present at once with one slot per image. URLs fill their
slot as they resolve: iOS hands them to the open Quick Look viewer through a
new updateFile call, and Android's image viewer shows its loading page until
the URL arrives. Nothing reopens and the order stays fixed.
- A sibling that cannot be resolved shows as failed; only the opened image
failing closes the preview.
- iOS still downloads one file at a time, nearest the visible page, but the
visible page now cancels a background download and that one restarts later.

Existing iOS/Android recordings retain their original commit and build provenance in the PR body. They show the unchanged preview implementation; they are not recordings of a rebuilt app at the rebased head. This script conflict required no native changes, so the delta review did not call for repeating the document recordings. Physical iPhone, production cellular/private attachments and a separate zoom/dismissal defect remain unverified. No server or device was started for this rebase.
Ready check completed at head 4dc5a0f77d98d7efcc93f92ec2694c69341c27ee and current base a07be97ab0753b2b5b0caecebba69d7f872594fa.
All eight required checks and CodeRabbit passed. CodeRabbit generated no actionable comments, and no review threads are unresolved. The PR is open, non-draft and mergeable; auto-merge is off and there is no merge queue entry. The updated transfer report records zero added bytes/messages for both providers. Macroscope retains its human-review notice and explicitly detects no code change after the rebase.
Independent source review covered the five crypto/relay refactors since the previously checked base 95e53a54dbd312fea7e8a2ef94514dc5f1c8ee3d. They do not overlap the PR files or invalidate the fix. Asset URL claims, expiry, token format, secret and HMAC-SHA256/base64url contract remain unchanged; the service is wired into both issuance and verification. Shared DPoP creation preserves the mobile signing/proof contract. The clean merge candidate tree is 3d86b0b6ed9a32b62d2cfbf224d523ac134b5a37. No new blocker or should findings arose, and no branch or application source change was needed.
Current-head local verification and current-head CI cover the final PR diff. Existing iOS/Android recordings retain their original commit/build provenance in the PR body and show the unchanged preview implementation. No new native build or recording was required solely for these upstream refactors. Physical iPhone, production cellular/private attachments and a separate zoom/dismissal defect remain unverified.

Before, baseline
9826dbb9904b2591bfbf60d1317486b59132f56b: the viewer waits for the sibling and remaining downloads.baseline-held-sibling.mp4

Recorded on shiv at
b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8, using a newly built client on the Simlock iPhone 17e, iOS 27.0, with synthetic attachments and an isolated backend. These recordings close the two evidence-audit gaps.Tap the ordinary PDF attachment card, see Quick Look display the PDF without another open action, then close back to the thread.
Tap the ordinary unsupported
.t3opaqueattachment, see the format-specific "No preview for this file" fallback, open File actions > Save or share, dismiss the real iOS share sheet, and return to the thread. The successfully downloaded file reaches Quick Look's format check. Its refusal maps to the observed format-specific message. A download failure produces a different message. This route suppliesonOpenError, so it displays AttachmentDocumentBody's fallback rather than the standalone modal alert.unsupported-fallback.mp4
The fixture PDF is a valid one-page 779-byte PDF; the opaque file is 1660 bytes of unsupported binary data. No app source was changed. No real account, private attachment or agent turn was used.
Standalone alert recovery and saving to Files
Both flows below ran on shiv at exact head
b0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8, on the Simlock iPhone 17e running iOS 27.0. These original real-time recordings retain automation delays; they are behavior evidence rather than performance measurements. The standalone modal uses the normal thread markdown-link path, without AttachmentFileScreen's
onOpenErroroverride. The fixture is valid WebM with Opus audio,.weba, which this iOS Quick Look cannot preview. The successful HTTP downloads returned 200; the alert shows the format-specific refusal message. Cancel returns to the thread, reopening produces the same alert, Save or share opens the real share sheet, and a supported PDF then opens and closes normally. The source path is markdown media classification, the standalone modal, and its native-error alert.standalone-alert-recovery.mp4
From the ordinary PDF attachment card, open Quick Look, choose Share > Save to Files, save to On My iPhone, open Files, find the saved PDF, and open it in Apple's Preview app. The unique page shows
T3 FILES AUDIT 26662andORBIT LIME 7391. Return to T3 and close its preview back to the thread. The saved file and source fixture are both 795 bytes with SHA-25668cb92bb45bb8beab4f3dcab728a82153a0df377721596608dcbd297b369efcd. This verifies the saved file itself, beyond displaying the share sheet.save-to-files-reopen.mp4

Rebase verification and test output records the script-conflict resolution, passing changed-file checks with the new typechecker, focused tests and independent delta review. All eight required CI checks and CodeRabbit passed at this head. The completed ready check also covers current basea07be97ab0753b2b5b0caecebba69d7f872594faand its crypto/relay refactors. The recordings below retain their original commit and build provenance. The preview JavaScript and Swift implementation is byte-for-byte unchanged by the rebase. These recordings are not presented as a rebuilt app on the newer base.Local output from the application commit above:
The Android preview cases passed 3/3 with
T3_MOBILE_TEST_PLATFORM=android vp test run --project react src/components/FilePreviewModal.test.tsx; the iOS variant also passed 3/3 during the follow-up check. The standard mobile
testscript now runs the Android preview cases after the existing unit and iOS React suites. This addresses CodeRabbit R6, which identified that the default command skipped Android-specific assertions.vp run check:changedpassed on application commit6bb0463855bdfbce747b95582f46d5dd8cfffc9f, including format, lint, knip, affected mobile/scripts typechecks and focused React tests. The follow-up manifest edit expanded local checking to 36 packages. Four unrelated typechecks exited with code 137 and the interrupted run did not complete; that attempt is not counted as a pass. All eight required CI checks passed onb0f21d9ae1d848cd304647f1ff22153b707689c8. The CI Test log confirms the default mobile suites ran and the appended Android preview invocation passed all three tests. CI build/typecheck and native static analysis also passed.vp test run --project react src/components/FilePreviewModal.test.tsx: 3/3 with the iOS transform and 3/3 with the Android transform. The iOS deferred-sibling case fails before the fix. These tests cover stalled sibling signing, sibling URL failure and selected URL failure.Independent review resolved the stalled-signing and download-priority findings, verified Android keeps its original loading semantics, and found no remaining code blockers.
