fix(devices): explain Windows SSH host failures - #30941
Windows OpenSSH can accept sign-in and then reject the device bootstrap, while Test connection hides the cause behind a generic communication error. After a failed bootstrap, identify Windows through the login shell or Node and explain the current macOS/Linux SSH-host requirement and the workaround: run T3 Code on the Windows machine and connect to its environment.
This implements the issue's diagnostic alternative. Native Windows SSH device hosting is still unsupported. Successful probes, connection failures and the existing missing-Node guidance retain their behavior. The user guide states the limitation.
Verified head 728f42fa6dd352c0a9767a18bd687eea4c5ae591 against pinned main/PR base 9e85538535c8553901351112ab02dd1dd62db5ee:
vp run check:changed passes format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected typechecks and 70 tests. Failing-first regressions cover shell detection, exact exit 9009, original causes, Linux and missing-Node replies, readiness/status, and the production Test connection error mapping through the wire codec. Current-head CI, CodeRabbit and Macroscope passed.
Four uncut real-client recordings below cover Settings > Devices > Add source > Machine over SSH > Add device host > Test connection > Show error. Both shells show the generic error on pinned main and the Windows explanation on this exact head. Recordings include form entry, trigger, completion and expanded error. No source patching or mocked SSH replies.
Builds ran on shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64, Node 26.12.0, isolated worktrees and .t3 state, through vp run dev --no-seed. Browser was Helium 0.20.3.1, driven in the background with cua-driver and recorded with wrec because this headless run had no T3 preview tools. Windows target was the existing UTM t3-windows, Windows ARM64 25H2 build 26200.9711, standard account t3tester, Node 26.12.1, stock OpenSSH.
Default SSH login shells were actual C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe and C:\Program Files\Git\bin\bash.exe, Git for Windows 2.56.0.windows.4, Bash 5.3.15. Git Bash used -c and DefaultShellEscapeArguments=0. Its real npm failure produced %OS% :OS from the shell check, then win32 from Node. The production probe and real app both returned Windows guidance.
Both tracked worktrees were clean and their source hashes still matched after capture. Temporary SSH access was revoked; authorized keys, ACL, local SSH config and original PowerShell registry settings were restored. Owned processes and test worktrees were removed. The VM was already running and was left running for its owner.
Baseline recordings are pinned to the PR base above. Newer main 62db6623cb30ed32968fc9ee0db1ea5355f9b39a was reviewed afterward: the Windows probe, service mapping, bootstrap, SSH command transport and device-host editor source are unchanged from that baseline. Nearby device edits only rename a typechecker diagnostic suppression. That newer tree was not built in this run.
Unverified: packaged desktop/mobile clients and working Windows device hosting. The four new runtime bootstraps exited 1; they do not reproduce a stock bootstrap returning 9009. Earlier native Windows ssh.exe evidence preserved a controlled remote exit 9009 as status 9009; the exact-code regression tests cover its mapping.

cmd bootstrap stderr was 'sh' is not recognized as an internal or external command. Git Bash bootstrap stderr was npm is missing from the non-interactive SSH PATH. The Windows wrapper retains that original SSH error as its cause. Git Bash's successful Node probe verifies the new fallback.

Walkthrough
SSH probing now checks selected command failures to identify Windows hosts. The device service maps recognized Windows failures to host-unavailable guidance. The device guide states that SSH device hosts support macOS and Linux.
Changes: SSH probe error handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Windows detection during SSH probing apps/server/src/device/SshDeviceHost.ts, apps/server/src/device/SshDeviceHost.test.ts
For eligible SSH command exit codes, the probe checks the host OS environment and, if needed, Node’s process.platform. A Windows result wraps the original failure in a tagged error. Tests cover Windows shell failures, missing tools on Windows and POSIX hosts, and connection refusal.
Host-unavailable messages and platform guidance apps/server/src/device/DeviceService.ts, apps/server/src/device/DeviceService.test.ts, docs/user/devices.md
The device service maps recognized Windows probe failures to DeviceHostUnavailableError and returns platform-specific guidance. Tests check readiness, error causes, and serialization without private SSH diagnostics. The guide states that SSH device hosts require macOS or Linux.
Failed Windows SSH probes receive clearer guidance. No material merge-blocking risk was established.

Explanation
Issue [#27302] allows either Windows SSH device hosting or a clear statement that Windows hosts are unsupported. This PR takes the second path. Whole-PR diff of apps/server/src/device/SshDeviceHost.ts at head shows explainWindowsHost in probe. It runs only after a failed bootstrap whose SshCommandError exit code is 1 through 254, or exactly 9009. Detection first runs echo %OS% $env:OS and checks for Windows_NT. If that is inconclusive, it runs node -p process.platform and checks for win32. A positive result wraps the failure in SshWindowsHostError. Its message states that SSH device hosts need macOS or Linux and gives the workaround: run T3 Code on the Windows machine and connect to that environment. A negative or failed detection returns the original error. The whole-PR diff of DeviceService.ts maps a Windows-wrapped probe error to DeviceHostUnavailableError with that message. The tests and the user-guide note in docs/user/devices.md support the same statement. Native Windows hosting is not claimed. Successful probes, connection failures, and the missing-Node diagnostic are unchanged. The Git Bash fallback and exit-code 9009 handling from the follow-up are present at head and match the PR description. Remaining uncertainty: the runtime Git Bash SSH login and default cmd SSH are unverified, as the PR states. These are runtime checks, not missing code, and they do not block the diagnostic requirement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All production changes address the Windows-host diagnostic in [#27302]. SshDeviceHost.ts adds the Windows detection, the SshWindowsHostError class, and the Git Bash node -p process.platform fallback. DeviceService.ts adds the 9009 exit-code acceptance and the mapping of Windows-wrapped errors to DeviceHostUnavailableError. The 9009 change in sshProbeFailureMessage applies to Windows-wrapped errors at the one call site in the diff. The non-Windows path keeps the DeviceOperationError mapping. Exit 255 remains excluded. The test and documentation changes support the same diagnostic. The PR adds no native Windows device-hosting code, client code, or device-runtime code. Minor uncertainty: I did not check whether sshProbeFailureMessage has other callers outside the diff. The diff shows no such caller, and the PR does not report one.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It opens by linking issue #27302 and states the problem: after a failed Windows SSH bootstrap, Test connection shows a generic communication error. It describes the change (Windows detection after a failed bootstrap, with macOS/Linux guidance and the run-on-Windows workaround) and the scope limit (native Windows SSH hosting is still unsupported). Verification is detailed: local check output at a stated head, real-client before/after recordings on macOS and Windows ARM64, and a JSON dump of production probe output for four cases. Unverified items are stated. The description does not follow the template headings (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification), and it has no explicit maintainer approval link or comment for the scope. The template requires that for a feature-scope change, and the author cites only the issue. The description also omits the model and harness line in the required form, although it does name the models used. The template's 'Scope and approval' section asks for maintainer approval of direction, and the description does not provide an approval comment, so that part is incomplete.
Resolution
Restructure the description under the repository template headings: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. Under Scope and approval, link the triaged issue #27302 and add the maintainer approval comment or discussion that approves the diagnostic-only direction. If no maintainer approval exists, state that and wait for it before merging. Keep the existing verification evidence under Verification. Add the model and harness line at the end, as the template asks. Keep the title in conventional commit form, such as fix(devices): explain Windows SSH host failures.

Detect Windows through Node when the shell probe is inconclusive.
The probe invokes spawnSync('npm', ['--version']) without a shell. This can fail on a Windows host where npm is available as npm.cmd. Git Bash then returns %OS% :OS for the detection command, so the Windows wrapper is not created and the user receives only the generic exit-code message.
Use process.platform before the shell-variable probe. Keep the existing probe as a fallback for hosts where Node is unavailable. Add this case to the existing failure table.

Fixed the Git Bash detection finding in 728f42fa6dd352c0a9767a18bd687eea4c5ae591. An inconclusive shell-variable check now falls back to node -p process.platform. Keeping the existing check first preserves the cmd/PowerShell runtime path and avoids another round trip for those hosts.
The Git Bash row failed on the preceding head and now receives the Windows explanation. The existing table also checks that Linux and missing-Node replies retain the original SSH error. vp run check:changed passes all checks and 70 tests. The PR body contains the current transcript and explicitly leaves a real Git Bash SSH login unverified.

Closes #27302
Windows OpenSSH can accept sign-in and then reject the device bootstrap, while Test connection hides the cause behind a generic communication error. After a failed bootstrap, identify Windows through the login shell or Node and explain the current macOS/Linux SSH-host requirement and the workaround: run T3 Code on the Windows machine and connect to its environment.
This implements the issue's diagnostic alternative. Native Windows SSH device hosting is still unsupported. Successful probes, connection failures and the existing missing-Node guidance retain their behavior. The user guide states the limitation.
