Closes #27911

What's fixed

Mobile sends skipped Claude's "When you return" idle compaction. Eligible sends now queue /compact before the message, using the existing setting and shared context checks, with stable command IDs for retries. Busy threads, disabled compaction and provider handoffs keep their existing send behavior.

Evidence

b6 lost-ack retry and raw check output (2026-11-02)

Both evidence gaps were rerun on b6bfd3cedce958ebef41123ab64dd60f642dd75f, base e6e2ab05cceb3f8245e87f8499d4891f27de33cb. No source changes or pushes.

Physical Android retry. Corex POCO F4 (c39d2814, Android 14), T3 development client fingerprint 971743703b097b8870b39ff842d130f50b115eeb, Metro and isolated server from this exact head. Real Claude Haiku 5.5. Global idleCompaction=onReturn, no instance override. The real seed turn reported 533,438 used tokens at 08:27:19.897 UTC, TTL 300,000 ms and provider cache expiry 08:32:17.451 UTC. The plain mobile Send occurred at 08:34:14 UTC, after both that expiry and the client deadline 08:32:19.897. The conversation and usage were provider-produced, not database edits.

The test proxy dropped the first successful compact acknowledgement before delivering it to the app, terminated the phone's WebSocket connection, and refused HTTP/WebSocket reconnections for 20 seconds. This injects a real transport interruption between phone and server; Wi-Fi itself stayed on. The recording shows Pending, Reconnecting, Failed to connect/Retrying, recovery, the compact boundary and the completed reply. No manual retry or second Send was used.

Fresh check:changed output. Boat large worker box-node-02767a4bcb80b6a2, job j_m7xywrjmytmjypiuxhpp, succeeded with exit 0. Command and result output is embedded below. These are selected verbatim output lines with ANSI color codes removed; dependency-install progress and repeated browser fixture warnings are omitted. The two compiler-suite skips totals reflect selecting only changed files.

Final base check. Fetched current main at 47f2c8d29e981c7723467efe137ee19e91df924e. GitHub still reports the PR's stored baseRefOid as e6e2ab05cceb3f8245e87f8499d4891f27de33cb; its live base ref points to 47f2c8d. git merge-tree --write-tree b6bfd3cedce958ebef41123ab64dd60f642dd75f 47f2c8d29e981c7723467efe137ee19e91df924e exited 0 with tree cd27939331bf0c1ad4d364172ab347f6142e8821. Reviewed the overlapping and neighboring changes: neither mobile compaction eligibility nor outbox delivery changed on main; web additions concern child work and folder references; handoff additions describe model switches; the server idle timer change retargets completed runs and leaves on-return mode unchanged. Claude's newer ledger accounting changes billable turn totals, not this eligibility check. The new main commits do not supersede this fix. This was a read-only integration check, not a build or runtime test of the calculated merged tree; the recordings and command output above are explicitly for b6. No branch update or push was made.

Verification on b6bfd3c

Exact source and backend commit b6bfd3cedce958ebef41123ab64dd60f642dd75f, based on e6e2ab05cceb3f8245e87f8499d4891f27de33cb. No source changes were needed after Maria's main merge. Its new delivery guard and resumable-run derivation were included in this native run.

Corex, physical POCO M3 Pro 5G, Android 13, native development client fingerprint 971743703b097b8870b39ff842d130f50b115eeb, exact-head Metro and isolated backend. Claude Haiku 5.5 read all 16 inert corpus files through the app's provider adapter. Native usage reported 532,309 tokens, a 300,000 ms TTL and cache expiry 07:52:35.614 UTC. The later client eligibility deadline was 07:52:37.656 UTC. The backend was stopped before expiry and restarted at 07:52:46 UTC. No usage or timing fields were edited. Global idleCompaction was onReturn; the selected instance inherited it.

The Android composer send at 07:54:31 UTC queued /compact first. The native boundary reported 532,311 → 4,541 tokens. The actual message started after compact completed and replied B6_ANDROID_RECOVERED. I removed this phone's backend USB reverse route at 07:54:32 UTC and restored it at 07:54:55 UTC. The recording shows completion after restoration. This interruption occurred after both command receipts, so it does not retest lost-ack retry. The fresh b6 lost-ack run below separately verifies retry of the accepted compact command.

The native boundary and smaller follow-up establish reduced context, not net billed or subscription quota savings. Manual compaction's complete billable usage is not reported by this CLI.

The iPhone 18 Pro Simulator on shiv, iOS 27.0, used the exact-head Metro/backend and native client fingerprint 887f84d7e8ee2e1063658bf884c9d17f60d6cbb3. A separate real Claude Haiku 5.5 conversation reported 532,230 tokens and a 300,000 ms TTL, expiring at 08:01:36.493 UTC. The client eligibility deadline was 08:01:36.577 UTC. The backend was stopped after the seed completed and restarted at 08:02:00 UTC. The iOS composer then queued compact before its message and completed B6_IOS_COMPACTED.

Chrome on corex loaded the exact-head web client, displayed the mobile-created compact boundary, sent a plain Claude follow-up, received B6_WEB_OK, and retained both after reload. This refreshes the web imports and main's lazy context derivation; the eligible stale send above was exercised through both native composers.

b6 web send and reload after mobile compaction

CI on this head passed all required executable checks. Mobile Native Static Analysis was skipped by the workflow's path condition. CI output. Maria's merge preparation comment records check:changed with 186 tests, 39 affected-package typechecks and 16 compiler checks, plus two independent reviews of the final merge tree with no findings. The fresh local focused results above are separate from that worker run.

Unverified: physical iPhone and net billing/quota savings. The c3 retry and main baseline recordings below retain their original commit labels. The compact delivery block is unchanged by the main merge; the refreshed native runs include main's added managed-runtime guard. Macroscope's notice about automatic mobile compaction without a per-send Full override remains for human review.

PR 27935 command-output evidence
Commit: c3c2f919fbce55f056b8a5ff8e7876650bfae1f1
Environment: physical corex; commands run in the issue-watch/27911 worktree.

Results
- Controlled paging regression reversion: exit 1; 1 failed, 21 passed. The existing c3c2f919 test runs with only the R2 run-state fallback removed, restoring 325930af behavior. This is not an unmodified-main run. The exact mutation diff is below.
- Exact source bytes restored to c3c2f919: context-window 22 passed, exit 0.
- Fresh check:changed: 178 tests in 12 files passed; formatting, lint, knip, 39-package typecheck and React compiler checks passed, exit 0. The script's previous success marker was moved aside; underlying package tasks can still use their normal same-input caches, as the raw output shows.
- Shared context-window plus handoff focused suites: 35 passed in 2 files, exit 0.
- Mobile outbox, delivery, delivery permissions and task permissions: 83 passed in 4 files, exit 0.
- Web context-window, meter logic and chat logic: 57 passed in 3 files, exit 0.
- Claude native-compaction watermark test: 1 passed, 274 filtered out, exit 0. The reported skipped cases are Vitest's -t selection, not quarantined tests.

The original source was restored in a finally block, byte for byte. Final git status --porcelain is empty. No code was committed or pushed by this evidence run.

Full command output follows. Each section includes exact head, command, working directory, environment, result and exit code. Native network and real expired-cache verification are separate evidence runs.

Final git status --porcelain: empty

Native after recordings and tests cover c3c2f91, running Metro on corex against isolated test state. Both clients reuse matching native dev builds. check:changed passed 178 tests in 12 files, affected-package typechecking, lint, formatting, knip and React compiler checks. The paging regression failed before the correction, then passed. Fresh independent review found no remaining correctness findings.

CI checks and full test output.

Android baseline, cropped to the composer and response, sends directly without compaction.

android-before-crop.mp4

Android after on POCO F4, Android 14: sending queues the message while Claude compacts, then completes ANDROID_R2.

android-r2.mp4

iPhone 18 Pro Simulator, iOS 27: sending compacts first, then completes IOS_R2.

ios-r2.mp4

Web regression check on 325930a: existing compaction history still renders after moving the shared helpers. The later correction changes only mobile eligibility and its tests.

The earlier ANDROID_R2 and IOS_R2 recordings use synthetic expired 293,611-token metadata and an approximately 121K conversation. The real expired-cache and network evidence below is a separate run on the same c3c2f91 source. Physical iPhone behavior remains unverified.

Both native runs persisted /compact, the queued user message, then the expected assistant response. Paging eligibility is covered by the focused regression test; the recordings exercise the send and delivery flow.

Real expired cache and connection recovery on c3c2f91

Physical POCO M3 Pro, Android 13, with Metro and an isolated backend on corex; matching native fingerprint 8006860c656de3319b4b47d3bab69506af6a0809. Claude 2.1.314, claude-personal, Haiku 5.5 with its reported 1M context and five-minute cache. Claude read 30 inert synthetic corpus files, producing actual provider usage above 524K tokens. No usage or timestamp fields were edited. The backend was stopped between turns to prevent keepalive, and both Android sends occurred after the real cache TTL.

Control with compaction disabled: BASELINE_REAL completed with 524,299 cache-creation tokens and zero cached reads.

android-real-baseline-short.mp4

With on-return compaction enabled, the phone sent COMPACT_REAL. A WebSocket proxy forwarded /compact, waited for the server acknowledgement, dropped that acknowledgement and every connection, and refused reconnection for 20 seconds. The video shows Pending and the connection failure, then recovery, the compaction boundary and one completed reply. The proxy observed two compact requests; read-only state assertions found exactly one accepted compact command, one compaction item, one user send and one assistant reply. The backend listened only on corex loopback, and the phone had no direct backend USB route during this run.

android-real-compact-recovery-m3.mp4

Claude's native boundary records 524,312 -> 3,202 conversation tokens. The next reply reports 57,777 cache-creation tokens and zero cached reads, 466,522 fewer replacement input tokens than the control, or 88.98%. This establishes reduced replacement input for the next reply. Net billing or quota savings remain unverified: the CLI emits no billable usage for manual compaction, so its zero-valued usage projection is not evidence that compaction was free.

The additional POCO F4 interruption check below completes the device-specific recovery request.

Real WebSocket fault proxy events, forwarded compact then dropped acknowledgement and all sockets, rejected reconnects for 20s:

{"at":"2026-10-31T03:05:09.353Z","event":"compact_request_forwarded","rpcRequestId":"38"}
The two forwarded compact RPC requests have different transport request IDs, but persisted state has one compact and one user send.
Control cache creation 524299; next reply after compaction 57777, reduction 466522 (88.98%). Both read 0 cached tokens. This is reduced replacement input, not a cache hit. The CLI emits no billable usage for manual compaction; persisted zeros are unavailable data, not evidence compaction was free. Net dollars/quota saved are unverified.

POCO F4 network recovery on c3c2f91

Physical POCO F4, Android 14, matching native fingerprint 8006860c656de3319b4b47d3bab69506af6a0809, with the exact c3c2f91 Metro source and an isolated corex backend. Claude Haiku 5.5 actually read 16 inert synthetic corpus files. Its native report measured 312,332 tokens and a five-minute cache TTL. The backend was stopped after the seed turn until 04:08:45 UTC, beyond the safe 04:08:42.704 expiry deadline. No usage or timestamp fields were edited.

The Android send automatically queued /compact with idleCompaction: onReturn. The proxy forwarded that command, observed server acceptance, dropped its acknowledgement and all sockets, then refused reconnections for 20 seconds. The phone shows the pending message and connection failure, then recovers and finishes F4_RECOVERY. Both compact attempts have exactly the same command and message IDs. Read-only database assertions found one accepted compact receipt, one compaction item, one user message and one assistant reply; all three provider turns completed.

ASSERTION PASS: both compact attempts have the same commandId and messageId, while the server accepted exactly one compact. The actual message was sent once after recovery.

Manual compaction billable usage is not emitted by this CLI. Zero-valued compaction usage is unavailable data; no net monetary savings claim.

Implemented with Opus 5.5 in Claude Code; verified and reviewed with GPT-6.1-sol in Codex.

Main Android baseline with When you return enabled

The POCO F4 reproduces the reported bug on clean main commit 80a2351fcb909034e65a512dfabeb3cdfd367762, using the native client fingerprint 8006860c656de3319b4b47d3bab69506af6a0809. Both the backend and Metro run from that separate main checkout. The PR comparison head remains c3c2f919fbce55f056b8a5ff8e7876650bfae1f1.

The isolated environment has global idleCompaction: "onReturn" and no instance override. Main's own resolveIdleCompaction(actualSettings, "claude-personal") returned onReturn. This setting stayed enabled through the real provider seed, cache expiry and Android send. The configuration and resolver output below establish the setting; the recording shows the send and reply, not the settings UI.

Claude Haiku 5.5 actually read 16 inert generated corpus files. Its final seed usage was 312,719 tokens, updated at 2026-10-31T04:20:20.813Z, with a reported 300,000 ms cache TTL and expiry 04:25:20.778Z. The backend was stopped after seeding to prevent keepalive and restarted after expiry. No usage or timestamp was edited. The Android send started its provider turn at 04:26:42.614Z, after both expiry measures, and finished at 04:26:44.775Z.

Main replied MAIN_DIRECT directly. The native transcript has zero compact_boundary records; projections have zero compaction items and zero /compact messages. The provider reported 312,763 cache-creation tokens and zero cache-read tokens on this reply. This is the requested main/onReturn baseline. The earlier M3 setting-off control is separate evidence. Compare with the c3 F4 recording above, which shows genuine expiry, compaction first and network retry without duplicate sends. These measurements establish cache replacement work, not net billing or quota savings, because manual compaction's billable usage remains unavailable.

PR Batch Tester and others added 3 commits October 31, 2026 01:05
"When you return" idle compaction only ran in the web composer, so a mobile
send into a large Claude thread past its prompt cache TTL re-read the whole
context uncached (#27911).

The web context-window derivation and resume-compaction predicates move to
@t3tools/client-runtime/state/context-window, with a shouldCompactBeforeSend
check both clients' rules now share. The mobile composer records the intent on
the outbox message; delivery sends a queued /compact (idleCompaction onReturn,
ids derived from the message's so retries replay it) before the message, which
queues behind it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ation

shouldCompactBeforeSend checked the selected provider against token usage from
every provider turn in the thread. A stale Codex thread at 293K switched to
Claude compacted first, though the send hands off to a fresh Claude
conversation, and an earlier conversation's usage could stand in for the
resumed one.

It now takes the selection and provider list, returns false when
resolvePendingHandoff reports a handoff (so instances sharing a continuation
group still compact), and reads usage only from the active provider thread's
turns. The eligibility table moves to a Claude fixture with runs, provider
threads and continuation groups.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Eligible mobile sends now automatically compact stale Claude threads before delivering the message, without a per-send Keep control. This changes default send behavior and requires confirmation of the intended context and user-control tradeoff.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Walkthrough

The client runtime now provides shared context-window state and pre-send compaction decisions. The mobile composer uses this decision to queue a /compact turn before an eligible message. Web consumers now use the shared context-window module.

Changes: Mobile idle compaction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared context-window policy and usage state
packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/package.json, packages/client-runtime/src/handoff.ts
The client runtime adds context-window usage derivation, resume-compaction eligibility, and pre-send compaction decisions. Tests cover the decision conditions. The package exports the module, and the handoff projection type now requires only runs and visibleTurnItems.
Web consumers use shared context-window state
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/*, apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.ts, apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.test.ts
Web consumers now import shared context-window helpers and types from the client-runtime module. Local usage helpers and resume-compaction predicates were removed.
Mobile send eligibility and queued message shape
apps/mobile/src/state/thread-outbox-model.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/thread-task-permissions.test.ts
The composer checks eligible automatic sends for pre-send compaction. When eligible, it adds compactBeforeSend to the queued message and uses queue dispatch. The provider fixture adds an empty slashCommands array.
Deliver compaction before the queued message
apps/mobile/src/state/threadOutboxDelivery.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/threadOutboxDelivery.permissions.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/thread-outbox.test.ts, docs/user/providers-claude.md
The outbox sends a separate queued /compact turn before the message and handles retry and restore outcomes. Tests cover delivery failures and queued-setting round-trips. The Claude guide describes mobile compaction behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The only directly linked issue, #27911, is closed and completed. The linked-issue context marks it as historical context only, not a requirement for this pull request. No active directly linked target remains, so no linked-issue coding requirements apply. The issue's acceptance criteria are not treated as PR objectives. The PR objectives section also states that no linked-issue coding requirements apply.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

No active linked-issue requirement exists, so scope is measured against the PR objective: queue /compact before eligible mobile Claude sends, using the existing idle-compaction setting and shared checks. The reviewed summary maps the changes to that objective. packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.ts adds the shared pre-send decision (shouldCompactBeforeSend). apps/mobile adds the compactBeforeSend outbox field, composer decision, and delivery of /compact with derived stable IDs. Mobile tests cover delivery and retry. Client-runtime tests cover eligibility. packages/client-runtime/package.json and handoff.ts expose the shared module to mobile. The web files move context-window helpers and imports to the shared module, and the summary shows no behavior change there. This supports the shared-logic objective. The docs change describes the mobile behavior. The latest correction, which removes the run-state fallback from eligibility, changes only the shared eligibility logic and its tests, as stated in the PR description. The reviewed evidence does not show an unrelated change. Removed web exports (shouldOfferResumeCompaction, hasDismissedResumeCompaction, context-window helpers) are reported as replaced by imports from the shared module. This was not verified by a full import search.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification) only partly. It has a 'Closes / Refs' line, a 'What's fixed' paragraph that serves as Problem and Change, and a long 'Evidence' section. It has no explicit 'Scope and approval' section. The linked issue #27911 is cited, but the description does not state a maintainer approval comment or explain how the change qualifies for the scope rules. The description also says the evidence covers commit b6bfd3c, while earlier evidence covers c3c2f91 and the PR head is not pinned. A later update says human approval for the experience tradeoff is still pending. The Verification section is very detailed and includes focused test output, a check:changed run, and device recordings. It also states what was not verified, such as physical iPhone behavior and net billing savings. The author did not include the model and harness line in one place, although a 'Verified by GPT-6.1-sol through Codex' line and an 'Implemented with Opus 5.5 in Claude Code' line appear in the evidence. The description is substantive but is mixed across several commit labels and is hard to follow.

Resolution

Add a clear 'Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged bug issue #27911 with the maintainer approval comment, or explain why this change qualifies without prior approval. Note that the experience tradeoff still needs maintainer sign-off. Restate the Problem section in one or two sentences with expected behavior and reproduction steps. Pin the Change section to the final PR head commit and remove or mark clearly the superseded evidence for c3c2f91 and earlier commits. Keep the Verification section focused on the final head. Add the model and harness line at the end of the description, as the template asks.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Do not reuse tokenUsage after a newer compact-only completion.

At packages/client-runtime/src/state/contextWindow.ts:299-307, the shared decision selects the old high-token tokenUsage report before checking loaded compaction items. A completed ACP /compact writes turnTokenUsage and a compaction item instead, so it does not replace that report. If the compaction item is outside visibleTurnItems, the next eligible mobile send can enqueue another /compact.

Make the shared usage selection treat a newer completed compact-only turn as superseding the prior tokenUsage report. Do not depend on the loaded activity window for this invalidation.

Upstream's fix for pingdotgg#27911 compacts a stale Claude thread before a mobile
send, and also skips busy threads, the disabled setting and provider
handoffs. Drop the fork's own version, including its mobile chip, and apply
the PR at c3c2f91 unchanged so the next sync merges cleanly.

current head: b6bfd3c. merged current main without rebasing and resolved the three conflicts: retained mobile compaction plus main's managed-runtime denial import, used the shared context-window helper in main's composer, and kept main's Keep label with the mobile behavior documentation. the final diff remains 21 files, 719 additions and 246 deletions.

blacksmith check:changed passed: format, lint, both knip checks, typechecks for 39 affected workspaces, all 12 selected test files, and react compiler checks. installed the missing worker chromium before the successful run. two independent read-only reviews approved the final tree with no findings. the remote merge commit has the same tree and parents as the locally checked merge; only timestamps differ. no force push was used.

native mobile stale-claude compaction remains unverified: this vm has no connected android device and claude is logged out. the previous runtime evidence below covers neighboring web behavior only. macroscope still requires human acceptance of the default mobile compaction behavior.

inspected the description, discussion, reviews, diff and commits. tested github/main at 15fe283272 in a separate worktree, then exact pr head c3c2f919fbce55f056b8a5ff8e7876650bfae1f1. installed each with vp i and ran one background dev server at a time. drove the web client with repo playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome.

created a real git repository, added it as a project through the app, and sent real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the configured local proxy. on main, the first turn returned cedar, manual /compact completed, and the follow-up retained cedar. stopped main and copied only this isolated app-created state into the pr's isolated home. on the pr, manual /compact completed and the next real turn again returned cedar. reloading preserved the conversation and compaction separators. no mocks, replay provider or database fixtures were used.

these checks cover neighboring web send, manual compaction, context retention and reload behavior. they do not exercise mobile's new automatic compaction decision or outbox delivery.

131 existing tests passed in 6 files through blacksmith-check: shared context-window policy, mobile outbox and delivery permissions, web context-window helpers, context-meter logic and chat logic. the pr reports 34 successful ci checks, zero failing or pending. no source changes or pushes were needed.

matching app-created conversation on main:

the same conversation loaded on the exact pr head:

pr: matching conversation and completed compaction loaded

15-second recording of a new manual compaction and follow-up on the pr. uploaded playback and seeking were checked in chrome:

pr: real codex manual compaction followed by a context-preserving reply

the original bug was not reproduced on main, and the changed mobile behavior was not exercised on the pr. it requires the native mobile composer sending into a stale claude thread with at least 200k tokens and expired cache. codex cannot qualify for this claude-only path. a direct websocket call would bypass the changed mobile composer and outbox, so it would not prove the fix either.

claude auth status reports loggedIn: false; the real app marks claude unavailable. adb devices -l lists no connected devices. t3 device_list reports Agent device access is turned off for this environment. native android and ios, mobile offline retry/idempotency, busy-thread and handoff behavior through that native path, and real expired-cache claude compaction remain unverified. the linux vm also does not establish desktop-specific behavior on macos or windows.

the proxy-backed codex turns did not expose a context usage meter or token usage section, so real token-usage display remains unverified. screenshots show conversation rendering, not that meter. no performance claim is made.

takeover fixup, 2026-11-02

merged current main (e6e2ab05cceb) into this head without rebasing. resolved the three conflicts while keeping the mobile compaction, main's managed runtime policy guard, the lazy web context derivation, and the current Keep label. the resulting pr remains 21 files, 719 additions and 246 deletions. head: b6bfd3cedce958ebef41123ab64dd60f642dd75f.

vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith against that main: formatting, lint, both knip passes, unused patches, 39 package typechecks, 186 tests in 12 files, and 16 compiler checks. two independent read-only reviews found no remaining correctness findings. the source snapshot needed a runner-only comparison-parent graft; no published history was rewritten.

this run adds no ui behavior or styling changes beyond preserving the pr during the merge. native mobile claude remains unverified: claude auth status reports logged out and adb devices -l has no connected device. earlier evidence above is historical, not a new runtime check of this merged head. macroscope's experience tradeoff still needs human approval.
