Guest links showed only the opening window of a thread: the last 20 user turns or 600 rows. The guest page had no way to load anything older, so long shared threads started partway through.

Fix. Guests now get the same "Load earlier turns" control the owner's timeline has.

  • Server: new GET /api/guest/history?share=&cursor= route, backed by GuestShareService.history. It checks the guest session, then serves getThreadHistoryPage for the shared thread. Pages are wire-projected like the opening snapshot, so file diffs stay out. Guests could already fetch any single item of the thread through /item, so this shows nothing new. Image replies in a page are recorded like streamed ones, so their images load.
  • Web: the guest reducer keeps the snapshot's history cursor and merges each page in front with mergeOlderHistoryIntoProjection, the owner's merge helper. A page whose cursor a reconnect snapshot has already replaced is dropped.

Tests: a service test pages back past the snapshot. It checks the old image reply loads only after its page is fetched, and that an invite (not a session) is refused. A reducer test covers the merge and the stale-cursor guard.

Not verified in a live client. Creating a share needs a T3 Connect host, which my dev setup doesn't have. So there are no before/after captures yet.

check:changed passes except GuestPage.browser.test.tsx > follows the end as replies stream…, which fails the same way on main without this change.

Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code.

A guest saw only the stream's opening window (the last 20 user turns), with
no way to scroll further back. Guests now get the owner's "Load earlier
turns" control, backed by a session-checked /api/guest/history route that
serves the same wire-projected history pages and records image replies so
their images load.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 4a1ac0f

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Guests can explicitly load earlier turns using the existing thread-history pagination. Live-share authorization and no-store responses preserve the existing sharing boundary, consistent with the disclosure that guests see the thread as its owner does.

Walkthrough

The guest server now provides cursor-based history pages for authorized sessions. The guest client can load earlier pages, merge them into the thread view, and display loading or error controls. The service records assistant replies from loaded pages for image handling.

Changes: Guest history pagination

Layer / File(s) Summary
History API and access
packages/contracts/src/guestShare.ts, apps/server/src/guest/GuestShareService.ts, apps/server/src/guest/http.ts, apps/server/src/guest/GuestShareService.test.ts
The guest contract and HTTP route provide cursor-based history retrieval. The service authorizes the session, retrieves a page, and records assistant replies from its items. The test covers pagination, invite credential rejection, and image availability after loading the page containing the reply.
Stream history state and merge
apps/web/src/components/guest/guestStream.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/guest/guestStream.logic.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/package.json
The stream tracks the next history cursor and merges a page only when its request cursor matches the current cursor. The client runtime package exports the history merge helper. The test checks stale-page rejection and cursor advancement.
Guest timeline history controls
apps/web/src/components/guest/GuestPage.tsx
The guest page fetches history pages and provides loading and error controls to the timeline. Successful pages are dispatched to the stream reducer.

Explanation

The title "fix: guest links can load earlier turns" names the main change: guest share links gained the ability to page back past the opening window of a thread. It follows conventional commit form and is specific, short, and free of noise.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections are clear and specific. The Verification section lists service and reducer tests and reports the failing browser test. The Scope and approval section has no linked issue or maintainer discussion, and the author does not explain why the fix qualifies without prior approval. The description also omits a model/harness line in the form the template requests, though it does name Opus 5.5 via Claude Code. Live-client verification and before/after captures are absent, and the author states this openly.

Resolution

Add a link to the triaged bug issue or the maintainer-approved discussion, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this small, focused fix of an obvious bug qualifies without one. Keep the existing verification details. Add a statement that live-client checking was not done, which the author already gives. Optionally, state the model and harness in the closing line the template requests.

Remove awaiting IDs placed by a history page.

If a fetched page contains a guest message in awaitingRowIds, the merged row hides its footer entry, but this branch retains the ID. After a reconnect replaces that page with a bounded snapshot, the old message can reappear at the end as an unplaced message. Apply withoutPlaced to the accepted page items when updating awaitingRowIds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clear partial-timeline mode after the final page.

When the final page sets historyCursor to null, this branch leaves state.partial set. A later turn-item.updated for a newly visible item at an older ordinal can then be discarded as missing history, even though the guest loaded the full timeline. Set partial to null when hasMoreHistory is false. The owner reducer enables partial-timeline handling only while history remains incomplete. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
