Problem

Mobile Files flattens expanded directory descendants into a temporary array at every ancestor, then copies each array with output.push(...childOutput). Deep expanded trees repeatedly copy the same rows. A sufficiently wide directory also exceeds the JavaScript argument-count limit and throws RangeError rather than producing its rows.

Change

Append rows in preorder into one output array. During search, roll back a subtree's starting position when neither it nor its descendants match. This retains row order, depths, expansion behavior, and the existing rule that a matched directory does not expose unrelated cached children.

Scope and approval

A small, focused implementation fix for redundant copying and the argument-limit failure in an existing capability. The production change is eight lines in one helper. It qualifies for the small obvious-bug exception; no product behavior or configuration direction is being proposed. The 200,000-file case is a synthetic stress reproduction, not a claimed field report.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/files/fileTree.test.ts — 7 passed. The new 200,000-file directory test fails on base d9eb2b61c3 and passes with this change, returning 200,001 ordered rows. It now also asserts an interior midpoint child at depth 1, so a swap between middle children cannot pass while the endpoints and row count stay correct. Existing expansion and search tests pass.
  • Mobile typecheck, focused lint, and formatting passed.

Performance and failure comparison

Workload / metric Before After Observed difference
30,000 leaves, 21 expanded ancestors — median 3.652625 ms 0.333959 ms 90.86% less helper time
Same workload — p95 4.739583 ms 0.680375 ms Lower tail latency in this fixture
One expanded directory, 200,000 files RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded 200,001 ordered rows Argument-limit failure removed

The wide-directory case is an intentionally synthetic stress test. It is not a claim that this exact folder size was reported by a user. The ordinary search/expansion cases are covered separately by the existing tests. The helper is called from FileTreeBrowser when expanded paths, search results, or the tree change; virtualizing displayed rows does not avoid this preprocessing.

Reproduce the measurements

Benchmark script · all raw samples · method, workloads, environment and full commit refs

The script extracts the actual helper source at the named Git commits, strips TypeScript, asserts before/after output equality, warms both versions five times, then takes 30 alternating samples per side. GC runs outside timing. Inputs are reused. Recorded environment: Node v26.10.0 / V8, macOS arm64, Apple M5. The reported median is the upper middle sample; p95 is the recorded 29th ordered sample out of 30.

Exact command and benchmark revisions

Download the linked script and run it from a checkout containing these commits (fetch the three luke2x/t3code performance branches if needed):

node --expose-gc performance-bench.mjs \
  d9eb2b61c3899f1ade376fd00f1ebb7fd11cf47e \
  98cc2b434fc6d35824009ade2ceffe78bf8d76fe \

  59090b82c32f369acf99add8ecb17f2884b8ee6f

Arguments are baseline, tree fix, preview fix, and HTML fix. Subsequent main merge commits did not alter any of the three benchmarked helper files; this was checked with Git diffs. The source revisions keep the original measurement reproducible.

Measurement limits

These are synthetic production-helper CPU measurements on Node/V8. They exclude caller rendering, native Hermes, native layout, scrolling frames, and heap measurements. No screenshots or native recording were collected because there is no visual-output change being claimed and this host has no native device/simulator available. The focused tests establish output behavior; these timings establish the cost of the isolated helper for the stated fixtures.

CI and review status

As of the 19 October 2026 audit, CI on 0fe3831c80 passes: 20 successful checks and 7 skipped, with no failing or pending checks. The branch also merges cleanly against main at 07d38b8d17. Earlier shared settings-mock and web test-dependency failures are historical; they are not current blockers. CI success does not replace maintainer review or establish native performance measurements.

Macroscope approved the implementation at its original reviewed commit; subsequent heads include merges from main. Approval at that SHA is not a claim that all checks or other reviewers have approved the latest head.

Implemented and tested with OpenAI Codex (gpt-6.1-sol) in T3 Code. Review follow-ups by DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 98cc2b4

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained mobile file-tree performance fix that preserves existing ordering and search behavior while eliminating repeated array copies and wide-tree argument-limit failures. The accompanying regression test is isolated to the test suite, with no product-default or static-analysis changes.

Walkthrough

flattenNode now writes nodes directly to the shared output array and removes rows when search matching fails. A regression test validates flattening an expanded directory with 200,000 files.

Changes: File tree flattening

flattenNode emits nodes and descendants directly into the shared output array. When a node and its descendants do not match the search, it restores the prior output length. The test checks the row count and representative rows at the start, middle, and end of a directory with 200,000 files.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/features/files/fileTree.ts: flattenNode now records the output length and emits each node and descendant directly into the shared array. If a node has no search match and no matching descendants, it truncates the array to that recorded length; previously it returned without emitting and used a temporary child array before appending visible nodes in parent-first order.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/src/features/files/fileTree.test.ts: Adds a test using 200,000 file children under an expanded directory and asserts the flattened rows contain the parent plus every child, with correct nodes and depths at the start, middle, and end.

Assert an interior child row in the wide-tree case.

The current assertions check only the root and final child. A swap between two middle children would preserve both endpoints and the row count, but LegendList would display those files in the wrong order. Add one focused middle-row assertion. The existing small-tree test establishes parent-first ordering, so an exhaustive comparison of 200,000 rows is not necessary.

Suggested fix
   expect(rows[0]).toEqual({ node: nodes[0], depth: 0 });
   expect(rows.at(-1)).toEqual({ node: children.at(-1), depth: 1 });
+  const middleChildIndex = Math.floor(children.length / 2);
+  expect(rows[middleChildIndex + 1]).toEqual({
+    node: children[middleChildIndex],
+    depth: 1,
+  });

Added the requested interior-child assertion in 66a7da986. The wide-tree case now checks the midpoint child at depth 1 in addition to the root, row count, and final child, so a swap between middle children can no longer pass unnoticed.

vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/files/fileTree.test.ts — 7/7 passed.

Updated this branch with the latest main. It was 6 commits behind, so I merged main into perf/mobile-file-tree-flatten, which brings the PR fully up to date. The merge was clean with no conflicts, and the PR diff is otherwise unchanged. CI will re-run against the new base.

Merged current main (968dd51704). Main deliberately removed the old file-tree helper suite, so I kept only this PR's regression for flattening a 200,000-file directory without exceeding JavaScript's argument limit, including checks for row count, order, and depth. The deleted general helper cases stay removed.

Verification on 550a3beeee: the focused regression passed; mobile typecheck and changed-file lint passed, and commit formatting passed. The production diff still uses one output array rather than copying descendant arrays. The existing benchmark is historical helper-level evidence, not a new native-device measurement. Fresh CI is pending.

updated this pr in place at 317e35d85e9ce5c06a2c481e1d730db6b8c43379, preserving @luke2x's commits. merged github/main at 0a3b561bc0 cleanly. the original eight-line production fix is already minimal, so it stays unchanged. added one case to the existing regression file for subtree pruning, adjacent siblings, row depths, directory-only matches, empty search, and restored/collapsed expansion. no unrelated changes.

verification:

  • reproduced the 200,000-file regression against current main's helper on blacksmith: RangeError at output.push(...childOutput).
  • the fixed helper passes both focused tests.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed against the merged base passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and tests. an initial run accidentally compared against newer main commits and reached unrelated browser tests without installed browsers; the corrected two-file run passes.
  • github ci: 20 successful, 8 skipped, none failing or pending. github reports clean and mergeable.
  • two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews approved this exact head with no findings. the old interior-row bot finding is already covered. coderabbit remains automatically paused; no bot was invoked.

unverified: native mobile ui, hermes, and device-level performance. this changes the mobile preprocessing helper without changing visual output or controls; the web app uses a different implementation, so browser screenshots would not verify this path. no new timing claim or native evidence is offered. the original helper benchmarks remain historical.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed app behavior could be verified on this linux boat vm. this is an environment-blocked verification attempt, not a passing runtime result.

inspected the description, complete two-file diff, discussion, commit authors, and head 317e35d85e9ce5c06a2c481e1d730db6b8c43379. github confirms the pr is open; no pr commits are authored by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. git.cafe reports 28 successful check contexts, none failing or pending; those checks do not establish runtime correctness.

the changed helper is called by native mobile FileTreeBrowser, reached through the thread files screen and file navigator pane. it replaces descendant-array copying with a shared preorder output array and rolls back unmatched search subtrees. exercising the web file browser or a codex turn in web would not execute this mobile helper.

availability checks this turn:

t3 device_list
Agent device access is turned off for this environment.

adb devices -l
List of devices attached
(no connected devices)

Not verified

nothing in the changed user flow was exercised. main reproduction, pr native execution, codex gpt-6.1-sol integration with mobile, wide/deep directory expansion, collapse/re-expansion, search pruning, file selection/preview, hermes performance, and native ios/android rendering remain unverified. no before/after captures or recording could be collected.

the repository's test-t3-mobile skill requires stopping verification when device access is unavailable and forbids switching automation systems. consequently no worktree/install/dev server was started, no synthetic helper benchmark was substituted, and no code, branches, labels, or pr state were changed. verification needs enabled device access and a supported native client, then the same real repository/provider scenario on main and this exact head.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

No runtime behavior verified in this attempt. The live device tools contradict the reported enabled state. Both device_list and device_open returned:

Device support is off. Ask the user to enable it in the Device panel before installing or starting device tools.

The repository's test-t3-mobile skill explicitly requires stopping verification when device access is unavailable. No emulator, install, Metro, or dev server was started. No screenshots or recording were captured, and no performance claim is made.

Inspected the complete diff, discussion, commit authors, and open state at head 317e35d85e9ce5c06a2c481e1d730db6b8c43379. No listed PR commit is by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. This affects Android and iOS mobile file-tree preprocessing, so web verification would not exercise the changed helper. Git.cafe reports 28 successful check contexts, none failing or pending; this is not runtime proof. No source, branch, labels, or PR state changed.

Not verified

iOS cannot run on this Linux VM. Android remains blocked by disabled T3 device support. Main reproduction, real dev-server pairing, real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns, wide/deep tree expansion, collapse/re-expansion, search pruning, file preview, and native performance all remain unverified. Enable device support in this environment's Device panel, then repeat the real Android scenario before treating this PR as runtime verified.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

verified head 317e35d85e9ce5c06a2c481e1d730db6b8c43379 in the real Android dev client with Hermes, AVD t3, an isolated dev server on port 16511, and Metro on 8081. no mocks or demo state.

created a real git project and two threads through the server. real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns created and checked 200,005 actual markdown files, then read the nested and root documents in a second thread. opened that project in the paired Android app.

  • expanded the actual 200,000-file wide/ directory. ordered file rows rendered and scrolled without a RangeError. selected a row and opened its actual content.
  • expanded docs/b, collapsed and reopened it, searched match, and saw only docs/b/match.md and its ancestors. unrelated cached siblings disappeared. clearing search restored the siblings and expansion. file preview displayed the generated markdown.
  • compared the same server and files with the native client from github/main at 1cf14a498f. expanding wide/ reproduced RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded (native stack depth) at fileTree.ts:129, output.push(...childOutput). restored the PR's matching native client afterward. these are native behavior checks, not a speed benchmark.
  • both existing focused file-tree tests passed on Blacksmith this turn. git.cafe reports 28 successful checks, zero failing or pending. no source changes or pushes were needed.

evidence uploaded with file-upload. inspected the captures and checked playback and seeking of both uploaded clips. the search clip plays at 2x; no timing comparison is claimed.

before: github main throws a native stack RangeError expanding the same 200000-file directory

after: pr head renders ordered rows from the real 200000-file directory

android: scrolling the real wide directory

android: search prunes cached siblings, file preview, and clearing search restores rows, at 2x

Not verified

iOS cannot run on this Linux VM. no native performance, frame-rate, heap improvement, or exhaustive traversal of all 200,000 visible rows is claimed. this pass covers a wide directory and ordinary nested expansion/search, not an extreme-depth tree or every client, theme, and connection mode.

the stress turn completed its filesystem work, but the dev server logged a checkpoint capture timeout on the 200,000-file uncommitted repository. checkpoint reliability at that scale is not established by this file-tree verification. the emulator also exited with QEMU hang errors while initially loading the main comparison client; restarting it allowed the exact main failure to reproduce.
