fix(client): dead connection routes are probed 30x less often - #27101
A connection on a fallback route preflighted every better route each minute.
A saved LAN route that never answers waited out the 2.5s probe timeout every
time, ~1k probes a day. Failed checks now back off from 2 up to 30 minutes per
route, and any network change or long resume clears the backoff so a route
that comes back is still found at once.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The connection driver now returns distinct route preflight statuses. The supervisor uses those statuses to back off silent routes, retry them on schedule, and clear their recorded failures after selected connectivity changes and wakeups.
ConnectionDriver.preflight returns ready, unprepared, silent, or unchecked. The test harnesses preserve these outcomes, and the supervisor test harness can override preflight results.
Track and defer silent route preflights packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts
The supervisor increases silent-route retry delays exponentially, up to 30 minutes. Better-route checks skip routes during backoff and run at 60-second intervals. A generation counter prevents stale checks from recording failures after a reset.
Clear backoff after connectivity events packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts
The supervisor clears silent-route tracking after non-offline network changes and selected wakeups. Tests cover reduced LAN preflights, repeated checks for an unprepared route, and a network change during a pending route check.
pingdotgg/t3code#24516 — The change adds exponential backoff for silent routes, addressing the repeated route-check cadence described in the issue. It does not change the socket teardown behavior noted there.
Responding routes are no longer backed off when preparation fails. A focused driver test would protect that fix against regression, but no current behavior failure is established.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Back off only routes that fail the reachability check.
When a route answers but resolver.prepare fails, ConnectionDriver.preflight returns false. This branch treats that responding route as silent. Repeated preparation failures can then delay another attempt for up to 30 minutes, even if preparation recovers without a network change. Preserve the check result separately from the preparation result, and apply silent-route backoff only to an unanswered check. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

fix(client): back off better-route checks of silent routes
fix(client): dead connection routes are probed 30x less often
Oct 29, 2026
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Silent preferred routes now receive progressively fewer probes, capped at 30-minute intervals, while network-change and long-resume events reset the delay. Human review is required for this default change and its tradeoff between probe overhead and recovery latency.
Notes:
No code objects were reviewed. Approvability was decided on eligibility alone.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
A route that answered its check but failed to prepare was backed off like a
dead route; preflight now reports that apart and only silent routes back off.
A check that was running when the network changed could also re-record its
stale failure after the reset; results from before a reset are now dropped.

…he check
The pending check could finish before the supervisor handled the
network-change wakeup, so the test could pass without exercising the
stale-result guard. It now waits for the post-wakeup session probe, which
runs after the silent routes are forgotten.

Add a production-driver test for the unprepared result.
The new test at supervisor.test.ts:1665-1689 overrides preflight to return "unprepared". It never runs ConnectionDriver.preflight. The production code at driver.ts:204-218 maps an answered check with failed resolver.prepare to "unprepared". A change that maps that case to "silent" would pass the current tests. The supervisor would then back off a route that answers, which the PR intends to prevent.
The fixture also conflicts with the test name. The name says the route answers, but checkRoute returns "silent" for the bearer route. Under production preflight, a "silent" check returns "silent" without calling resolver.prepare. Fix the fixture only when the change keeps the connect path's route choice unchanged. Add a focused test that runs the real driver layer with an answered check and a failing resolver.prepare, and asserts "unprepared".
