All server reads shared one SQLite reader worker behind a single permit; one long read transaction stalled every other read.

Metric Before After
Slow sqlite spans that were lock wait (24h, fleet traces) 87% —
Benchmark wall time, 3 heavy read loops + 4 point-read loops (2.2 GB real DB) 1.4 s 0.6 s
Worst point-read wait in that benchmark 1.4 s 0.26 s
Point read p50 0.2 ms 0.2 ms
  • Reads go to the least-claimed of 4 reader workers; idle slots never start a worker.
  • A read transaction keeps its worker until its scope closes; one-off reads release on exit.
  • Test: a read while another read-only transaction is open (deadlocks on main).

Claude Opus 5.5 in T3 Code (Claude Code harness).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Every read-only query and transaction shared one reader worker behind a
single permit, so a long read transaction stalled every other read. Traces
showed 87% of slow sqlite spans were lock wait, not execution. Reads now go
to the least busy of four lazily started workers; a transaction keeps its
worker until its scope closes.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 14a5940

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — SQLite read-only queries can now use up to four lazily started workers instead of sharing one queue. Read-only connections, transaction affinity, serialized writes and startup-failure fallback keep the change bounded, with no material product-policy or data-handling change.

Walkthrough

NodeSqliteClient now routes eligible read-only acquisitions through a four-slot reader pool. It tracks reader claims across borrows and transaction scopes, uses the writer when readers are unavailable, and adds tests for reads during an open read-only transaction.

Changes: SQLite reader routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reader pool routing
packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts
The client uses four reader slots. Eligible read-only acquisitions select the least-claimed slot, with slot order breaking ties. When readers are unavailable, acquisitions route to the writer.
Claim lifecycle and regression tests
packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts, packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.test.ts
Borrow claims are released when a borrow completes, fails, or is interrupted. Transaction claims are released when the transaction scope closes. Tests check concurrent reads during an open read-only transaction, including when a reader cannot open the database.

Explanation

The title names the main change: SQLite reads no longer queue behind each other, with a stated performance gain. It uses a conventional commit prefix (perf(shared)). The summary describes a four-slot reader worker pool that routes reads to the least-claimed worker, which matches the title's main point. The 5x figure is a benchmark-specific claim that the description supports only partly (its measured wall-time gain is about 2.3x), so the title overstates the result somewhat, but this does not make it unrelated or misleading about the change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections in substance. It states the problem (one reader worker behind a single permit, so a long read transaction stalled all other reads) and the change (a four-worker pool with least-claimed routing and claim release on scope exit). It includes a focused test and benchmark figures with before/after numbers, which covers the Verification requirement. However, the template's Scope and approval section is missing entirely: there is no linked triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and no explanation of why the change qualifies without one. The description also does not address the template's guidance on the author's agent and harness beyond a generic model line. The missing approval reference is a required element of the template, so the description is not fully complete.

Resolution

Add a '## Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged issue or the maintainer-approved discussion, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this change qualifies as a small, focused fix of an obvious bug without prior approval. Keep the existing Problem, Change, and Verification content. Confirm the verification notes state what could not be checked. The current 'Claude Opus 5.5 in T3 Code' line can stay at the end, as the template requests.

Skip reader slots that are permanently unavailable.

When the first reader fails during startup, makeReader permanently returns undefined for that slot. Its claim then returns to zero, so every later idle read-only acquisition selects it again and falls back to the writer. Healthy reader slots remain unused, which removes the concurrent-reader routing benefit.

Major · Stability & Availability · Heavy lift

Keep healthy reader slots available.

If one reader fails to start, this flag disables every slot for the client lifetime. A read-only transaction then falls back to the writer and can deadlock while waiting for a separate writer, even when another reader is healthy. The existing transaction test exercises that dependency. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Track availability per slot and fall back only when no reader is available.
