feat(release): release notes and the update popover open with a short note - #26893
Release notes are a raw list of every PR title, often 250+ lines of fix(mobile): … and refactor: …. Nobody can tell what actually changed. In the app, stable users saw no notes at all, and nightly users saw the last 8 PR titles as bullets.
Now each stable and nightly release opens with a short note:
A header computed by code: "v0.1.4 · 275 changes from 22 contributors".
A summary from GPT-6.1 Terra (low reasoning): one "Highlights" paragraph of the notable features, then up to 10 fixes. It covers web, desktop, and server only, so commits whose scopes are all mobile are left out.
GitHub's full list, folded under <details>.
In the desktop app, the update popover now shows notes on every channel. Each release is the highlights paragraph plus the counts, which link to GitHub. The offered release shows how long ago it shipped ("3h ago"), read from the update feed's releaseDate. The feed dates only the offered release, so older stacked nightlies show their build day from the version ("1d ago"). Fixes stay on GitHub, so several stacked releases stay short. Older releases without a summary keep the old list.
Generation is one continue-on-error step in the release job. If it fails or there is nothing to summarize, it writes no file, and the release uses GitHub's generated notes as before. It costs about $0.01 to $0.04 per release. It uses the OPENAI_API_KEY repo secret, which is already set.
GitHub release, before
GitHub release, after
In the app (packaged Linux build, mock update feed)
Popover, dark, 3 releases stacked
The GitHub images are GitHub's own Markdown rendering of v0.1.3..main, and the "after" notes come from a real run of the script. The in-app image is a locally built AppImage pointed at the repo's mock update server.
How the model and prompt were picked
We compared Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6.1 Terra, all on low reasoning, over a stable range, the current stable range, and a nightly. Over several prompt rounds, we added rules and gave the models the first 300 characters of each PR body. Commit subjects alone hide fixes like "packaged server ships zod", which was really a desktop crash on startup. Terra followed the style rules as well as Sol, at half the price. Haiku got facts backwards, and Sonnet ignored the style edits.
Proof: focused tests for the summary parser, the Discord cut, contributor counting, and the mobile filter. The parser tests fail on main. vp run check:changed passes, and actionlint finds nothing new. Real script runs on v0.1.3..main and a nightly range worked, and a forced API failure wrote no file. A packaged AppImage showed the popover with stacked notes. The release workflow itself first runs on the next nightly.

The pipeline review moved generation into the release job, so a failure can never block the release. The card review moved the body to text-xs, replaced the popover's inherited text-balance with text-pretty, and replaced separators with spacing.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Release notes gain automated summaries and release ages, with fallback to GitHub-generated notes. The update-details popover also becomes standard beyond nightly builds; that default experience needs human confirmation.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
The release workflow can generate notes for non-preview releases with a previous tag. Desktop, web, and Discord components process the summary and folded full changelog. Desktop update notes include release dates, summary text, and statistics when available.

Summary
Summary content and filtering scripts/generate-release-notes.ts, scripts/generate-release-notes.test.ts
The generator builds model input from commits and pull-request data. It excludes commits whose scopes are all mobile, Android, or iOS from the summary, counts contributors, and formats the release header. Tests cover contributor counts and scope filtering.
Fetch release data and write notes scripts/generate-release-notes.ts
The CLI reads commits between tags, fetches pull-request data and GitHub’s full changelog, and requests a model summary. It writes assembled notes when summary text is available.
Connect generation to the release job .github/workflows/release.yml, docs/operations/release.md
The release job checks out full history and runs the generator for non-preview releases with a previous tag. It uses the generated file when present and requests GitHub-generated notes otherwise. The release guide documents the generation step and fallback.
The desktop contract and parser support summary fields and release dates. The sidebar displays release notes for any update channel and shows summary content and release age when available. Tests cover parsing, release dates, and the popover label.
Format release notes for Discord scripts/notify-discord-release.ts, scripts/notify-discord-release.test.ts
The Discord formatter links pull-request references in the summary and adds a link to the full changelog when notes contain a folded section. A test covers the formatted announcement.

The browser tests use only nightly update states. A nightly-only regression would therefore pass while removing release notes from stable releases. Extend the existing popover test with a stable-channel state and assert that its release notes open.

Upstream release: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/releases/tag/v0.1.5-nightly.20261029.3877
… (Running the fork's tests in scripts)
Failing check: Running the fork's tests in scripts
"Running the fork's tests in scripts" had two failing tests. Upstream changes in this nightly broke both of them, and in both cases the broken code was a fork-owned test. I fixed both, and both files now pass (96 tests), with lint and format clean.
**`scripts/smoke-cli-archive.test.ts`**: upstream's pingdotgg#26912 changed `smokeCliArchive` so that on Linux it now requires `lib/libatomic.so.1` and its `.LICENSE` in the archive, and checks with `ldd` that `t3` loads that copy. This test only exists in the fork (it goes with the `smoke-port-race` seam). Its fixture is a Node script, so it can't link a shared library and can never pass the new check. The test is about two concurrent smoke runs getting separate ports from the kernel, not libatomic. So I set `HostProcess.Platform` to `"darwin"` around the two `smokeCliArchive` calls, with a one-line comment. That skips upstream's Linux-only layout and `ldd` checks for this fixture. The Windows skip, the port setup and every assertion are unchanged. Upstream's libatomic check itself is untouched and still applies to real Linux archives.
**`scripts/fork/updates.test.ts`**: upstream's pingdotgg#26893 added a `releasedAt` field to each popover entry in `apps/desktop/src/updates/releaseNotes.ts`. For nightly versions it is the build day taken from the version string. The fork's popover test compared the whole entry exactly, so the new `releasedAt: "2026-10-15"` failed it. I added that field to the expected value. The assertion is just as strict; it now matches upstream's output.
I didn't touch any upstream code or seam rows.
