feat(chat): go back between Claude Code's questions from the card (#2465) - #2503
Claude Code's AskUserQuestion card and its "Ready to submit your answers?" review now list the questions as steps, with Back, the way omo's and pi's forms already do (steps, can_navigate, can_step_back, step_index).
Where the steps come from. Claude's own tab bar (← ☒ Device ☐ Symptoms ✔ Submit →), which claudeTabs already read. Claude draws the tab shown on a background (measured on Claude Code 2.1.312: 48;2;177;185;249); claudeTabSteps takes the shown tab from that background and nothing else. Without that evidence (NO_COLOR, two tabs lit, no background, a bar the pane cut off) the card has no steps and answers as before.
How a step moves. The answer route sends ← or → once, reads the pane again, and sends the next arrow only when the bar shows the tab expected. It reuses pi's navigator (navigatePiAsk, now given the form's tab reader). Anything else (another tab, a changed bar, the prompt gone) stops with 409 prompt_changed and leaves the rest to the terminal. Digit keys are never sent for a step. A Claude frame caught mid-redraw, whose colors cannot be checked, counts as no evidence and is read again; pi's reads behave as before.
Answers stay. Claude keeps the answers already given when its tabs move, and the review lists them.
Card id. It is the same whether or not a poll could read the colors, so a poll that loses them does not turn the card into a new one.
Client. Steps and Back wait while edits or a typed answer waiting for Confirm are unsent, as pi's tabs do. No new strings.
Title. Back on an answered question now titles the card with that question (Device · 1 of 2), not with the first question still open.
The design follows Claude Code's own terminal (its tab bar and ←/→) and the card's existing omo/pi step list. Screenshots (desktop 1280 and phone 390, Codex dark and light, from a live Claude Code 2.1.312 pane in the isolated ovis-test herdr session) are with the maintainer.
Review notes (Codex review of this diff)
Fixed: the shown tab had been taken from "the one tab in the default color" when no tab had a background; it is now the background only (test added).
Fixed: a typed answer waiting for Confirm would have been dropped by a step; steps and Back now wait for it.
Fixed: the "look again" wait for colorless reads applied to pi too; it is now limited to Claude.
Not changed: two questions with identical text and options share a card id. That was already true before this PR, because the id took its title from the first unanswered tab. A colored read taken just before a switch between two such identical tabs could start a move from the wrong tab. The navigator re-reads before every arrow and stops at the first unexpected tab, so the worst case is one arrow followed by a 409.
Validation
bun run check fast: pass (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests).
Failing-first tests:
server/dialogs/claude.test.ts "Claude Code's question tabs as the card's steps": steps, current tab, Back, the review, no steps without background evidence, and an id that is the same with or without colors. Fixtures server/fixtures/claude-tabs-2.1.312-*-120.ansi are real pane reads.
server/prompt.test.ts "goes back between Claude's question tabs…": Back and step_index: 0 send exactly ["left"] and ["left","left"]; a pane that skips a tab gets one key and then a 409; invalid steps get 400; a colorless frame mid-move is read again.
One existing test was updated: "keeps waiting for Claude's next question through a failed read" now expects one more pane read (the colored read of the next question's tab bar).
Live QA: the real server (port 0, fresh state dir), a real Claude Code 2.1.312 pane in the ovis-test session, and Chrome. Step Submit from Device, Back from the review, and step 1 from Symptoms each returned 200, and the pane's own highlighted tab was checked after each.
Skipped: bun run check integration browser / full.
)
Claude Code's AskUserQuestion card and its "Ready to submit your answers?"
review now carry the steps and Back that omo's and pi's forms have,
built from Claude's own tab bar. A step presses left/right as many times
as the tabs are apart; after every move the route reads the pane again
and goes on only when the bar shows the tab expected, otherwise it stops
with 409 prompt_changed and the terminal takes over. Claude keeps the
answers already given, as it does from the terminal.
- server/dialogs/claude.ts: the tab shown is the one the bar draws on a
background (measured on Claude Code 2.1.312). Without colors (NO_COLOR,
two tabs lit, a bar cut off by the pane) the card has no steps. The
card's id is the same with or without colors.
- server/prompt.ts: a Claude pane whose screen shows a whole tab bar is
read once more in color, as pi's tabs are; the answer route moves
Claude's tabs through the navigator pi already uses.
- server/dialogs/pi-ask-navigate.ts: takes the form's tab reader; a Claude
frame mid-redraw whose colors cannot be checked is looked at again,
never taken for another tab. pi's reads behave as before.
- src: steps and Back wait while edits or a typed answer are unsent.

New Features
Claude Code question cards now show step-based navigation across questions and the review screen, with Back available to revisit earlier steps.
Navigation follows the active tab and preserves submitted answers.
Bug Fixes
Navigation controls are unavailable while a typed answer is awaiting confirmation, helping prevent accidental loss of edits.
Tab navigation is omitted when the active tab cannot be reliably identified, and stale or ambiguous navigation is rejected.
Claude question and review cards now expose steps based on colored terminal tabs. Navigation reads the terminal again to verify the expected tab. Back and step controls are disabled while a typed answer awaits confirmation.

Claude question and review cards use ANSI colors to identify the active tab and build question and Submit steps. Tests and terminal fixtures cover answered tabs and cases where active-tab colors cannot be read.
Navigate and verify Claude tabs server/dialogs/pi-ask-navigate.ts, server/prompt.ts, server/prompt.test.ts
The navigation helper accepts Claude tab state. The prompt flow rereads the live Claude pane and checks the expected tab after movement. Tests cover backward navigation and stale or unreadable tab state.
Guard navigation with pending answers src/lib/promptAnswer.ts, src/lib/promptAnswer.test.ts, src/components/PromptCard.tsx
Claude step navigation is blocked while a typed answer awaits confirmation. The card disables Back and step controls in that state.

devswha/ovis#1714: This PR extends the reusable step-navigation model introduced for Pi.
devswha/ovis#2003: This PR reuses and extends the Pi tab-state infrastructure for Claude’s colored tabs.

Explanation
Issue #2465 proposal A requires Claude question and review cards to expose tab-derived steps with Back, move by Claude's left/right tabs, verify the expected tab after each move, and retain answers. server/dialogs/claude.ts derives steps only from a single highlighted tab and adds them to question and review prompts. server/prompt.ts routes Claude navigation through navigatePiAsk, which rereads before each key and returns prompt_changed on unexpected state. The existing Claude parsing and review path retains answers, and the added fixtures and tests cover steps, Back, review answers, stable IDs, stale navigation, invalid steps, and colorless reads. The reported fast check passed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #2465. The navigator generalization supports the required Claude tab movement while preserving Pi behavior. The shared tab metadata, color verification, client blocking for unsent answers, fixtures, unit tests, and changelog directly support safe step navigation and the requested card behavior. No unrelated feature or administrative change is shown.

Strict review by the merge pass at 9829c32 (omo code reviewer on Claude plus a Codex Terra pass, both with repros on the real 2.1.312 fixtures). No HIGH: only ←/→ are sent and only into a Claude question form; a shell, another agent or pi stops it and pi is unchanged; without colour evidence or with two tabs lit the card has no steps; the redraw wait is bounded by the 4 s deadline; submit is never triggered by Back; bad step values get 400; watch devices still cannot answer. Tests: dialogs + promptAnswer 394, prompt.test 403, conventions 58, typecheck clean.
Please fix before merge (small round):
MEDIUM, reproduced:server/dialogs/claude.ts:202 leaves the tab shown out of the card id, so two tabs with the same question and options get the same id (bcfe3785a14c on the real fixtures) and a stale answer can send Enter to the other question. Include the active tab (or step index) in the id. Main had the same rule, but steps make it reachable.
LOW, reproduced at the parse level:server/dialogs/pi-ask-navigate.ts:42 accepts a frame with the new tab lit but the old question still drawn as a finished move; a multi-step move can then send the next arrow early and 409 partway. Wait until the question body matches the new tab too.
LOW, for the merge note: the read before each arrow needs colours but the wait after it does not (pi-ask-navigate.ts:22 vs :35), so one missed colour read can 409 partway; the colour read adds a pane.read to every Claude poll (server/prompt.ts:886); PromptCard.tsx:155 now disables Back for every agent while a typed answer waits for Confirm, untested. The read-to-send gap before pane.send_keys is shared with every prompt answer and is not new here.

…t for its question after a move (#2465)
Merge review of #2503:
- server/dialogs/claude.ts: the card id now reads the shown tab's title
(its label and place), so two tabs with the same question and options
are two cards and a stale answer for one is refused on the other. On
the first question still open it is the id a colorless read gives too.
- server/dialogs/pi-ask-navigate.ts: a frame with the new tab lit over
the question it left is no finished move until its question changes,
or stays the same for 150 ms (two tabs may ask the same). After the
first arrow, the read before the next one checks the form's tabs, not
a question still being redrawn under them; before the first arrow the
card asked from must still be shown. For Claude, that read also waits
through a frame whose colors could not be checked.
- src/components/PromptCard.test.ts: Back waits while a typed answer
waits for Confirm.
Merge-review round, pushed as 355118c (one push). Reviews this round ran on Terra 6.1 only.
Fixed
MEDIUM, card id ignores the active tab (claude.ts). The id now reads the shown tab's title (its label and its place, e.g. Device · 2 of 2). Two tabs with the same label, question and options are two cards, so a stale answer for one is refused on the other. Failing-first test: claude.test.ts "tells two tabs apart that ask the same question with the same options".
LOW, half-redrawn frame accepted (pi-ask-navigate.ts). A frame with the new tab lit over the question it left is no finished move until its question changes. If it stays the same for 150 ms, it counts as that tab's own question, since two tabs may ask the same. Failing-first route test: the question drawn when each → went out is ["device", "symptoms"]; before the fix it was ["device", "device"].
Also, after the first arrow, the read before the next one checks the form's tabs (labels, answered marks, tab shown), not a question still being redrawn under them. A half-drawn frame can therefore no longer make a move 409 partway. Before the first arrow, the card asked from must still be the one shown, as before.
LOW, the read before each arrow needed colours (pi-ask-navigate.ts:22). For Claude it now waits through a frame whose colours could not be checked, as the read after a move already did.
LOW, Back disabled while a typed answer waits, untested (PromptCard.tsx:155). There is now a render test, PromptCard.test.ts. It fails when the rule is removed.
Kept, for the merge note
The colour read adds one pane.read to a Claude poll, only while a whole tab bar is on screen.
Back on an answered tab: a read whose colours could not be checked (a frame mid-redraw) now gives a different id from the coloured read, because the id names the tab. That is the price of finding 1. It only happens while the pane redraws, so a web-only edit in that moment would be dropped (Terra P1).
pi still uses the shared navigator unchanged, apart from the question wait. With identical questions on every tab, 150 ms per tab still fits about 26 tabs in the 4 s answer deadline (Terra P2 asked about 32-tab forms).
Validation: bun run check fast passes (typecheck, build, unit tests). server/dialogs/ + server/prompt.test.ts: 766 pass. PromptCard + promptAnswer tests pass. Live QA was re-run on a real Claude Code 2.1.312 pane in the ovis-test session, with the real server and Chrome: the two-arrow step Device→Submit, Back from the review, and step 1 from Symptoms each returned 200, and the pane's own highlighted tab was checked after each.
Thank you for picking this up so fast. I reviewed the diff and ran it live. The steps work. I found two problems: one in the wait after an answer, and one in a step that follows a step.
Live check
Headless Chromium at 1280×800 against the PR head (355118c3), with a real Claude Code 2.1.316 (haiku) pane at 120 columns in an isolated bun run check run session:
2.1.316 still draws the shown tab on a background: the Device and Symptoms cards show their steps, and the review shows Back.
Back from Symptoms to Device: 200 after 301 ms. Claude keeps the answer given, and the card shows it (Desktop browser ✔).
A step from Device to Submit (two →): 200 after 339 ms, and the review lists the answer.
"Submit answers": no card 310 ms later, with no flash.
1. With steps, an answer to a Claude question loses the #2466 wait for a half-drawn screen
server/prompt.ts picks the wait with if (target.steps) first. With colors, a Claude question card now has steps, so its answer takes sameContent(contentId(target)) and never gets to claudeStepStill. sameContent takes the fallback card of a half-drawn frame as the next step, so the "Waiting for input" card from #2464 comes back after the last question. Only colorless screens still get claudeStepStill. The #2466 test uses colorless screens, so it still passes.
This test uses the PR's own fixtures. At 355118c3 it fails with Expected: "Review your answers", Received: "Waiting for input":
test("with colors (steps), an answer to Claude's last question waits through a half-drawn review",async()=>{constpanel=(state: string)=>readFileSync(newURL(`./fixtures/claude-tabs-2.1.312-${state}-120.ansi`,import.meta.url),"utf8");constdraw=(pane: Pane,screen: string)=>{pane.viewport=screen;pane.screen=screen.replace(ANSI_RE,"");};constreview=panel("review");constheading=review.split("\n").slice(0,4).join("\n")+"\n";awaitwithPane("claude","blocked","",async(pane)=>{draw(pane,panel("second"));constsecond=(awaitcard())!;expect(second.steps?.length).toBe(3);pane.onSent=(sent)=>{if(sent!=="enter")return;setTimeout(()=>draw(pane,heading),100);setTimeout(()=>draw(pane,review),300);};expect(awaitanswer(second.id,{option_index: 0})).toEqual({status: 200,code: undefined});expect((awaitcard())!.title).toBe("Review your answers");});});
This order passes it, and server/prompt.test.ts and server/dialogs/claude.test.ts pass with it (442 tests):
// Claude draws its next tab, or its review, a moment after the key: the same wait, by what the// step asks, whether or not its tabs are steps (#2465)if(responder==="claude-question"||responder==="claude-submit")form.still=claudeStepStill(parsedByPublicPrompt.get(target)!);elseif(target.steps)form.still=sameContent(contentId(target));elseif(responder==="claude-model"||responder==="claude-effort"||responder==="codex-model")form.still=sameContent(lastSeen??contentId(target));
2. A poll during a step gives the card an id that the end of the step retires
In the live run, a normal poll read the Device tab while the Back step was still running (read 8, id ead97e33a03f). Then the route returned and called askingEnded, so the next read gave the same tab a new id (86b781c187f7). The card kept the old id, and the next step (Device to Symptoms) got 409 prompt_changed after 79 ms. The card showed "The question on screen changed; check it and answer again.", and then the same card came back with no move. For the user, the tap on the step does nothing.
15325ms answer> {"prompt_id":"2811604afd4d","step_back":true,...}
15486ms card card#3 "Device · 1 of 2" steps=[Symptoms, Submit]
15488ms prompt read 8: {"id":"ead97e33a03f","title":"Device · 1 of 2",...}
15814ms answer< 200 after 301 ms
17204ms answer> {"prompt_id":"ead97e33a03f","step_index":1,...}
17287ms answer< 409 after 79 ms {"error":{"code":"prompt_changed",...}}
17292ms prompt read 9: {"id":"86b781c187f7","title":"Device · 1 of 2",...}
It happens only when a poll comes during a step, so not every time. A Claude step takes longer than a pi step, because it also waits for the question under the tab (SAME_QUESTION_SETTLE_MS), so the window is wider. I did not try a fix. A step changes what the card shows, because its title names the tab, so a step may not need askingEnded. But pi's steps use the same path, and I did not check them.
Small note, not for this PR
After Back, Claude marks the answer given with ✔ in the option's own text, so the card shows the label Desktop browser ✔. The same happens when the user goes back in the terminal.
…ard a poll reads during a step (#2465)
Two bugs @jpcarranza94 found running #2503 live on Claude Code 2.1.316:
- server/prompt.ts: with colors a Claude question card has steps, so the
wait after an answer took sameContent before claudeStepStill, and the
half-drawn "Waiting for input" card of #2464 came back after the last
question. Claude's responders now pick the wait first. Test and fix
order by @jpcarranza94.
- server/prompt.ts, server/dialogs/pi-ask-navigate.ts: a poll during a
step gave the card an id that the end of the step retired, so the next
step tap got 409 prompt_changed and did nothing. A move is now an
asking of its own, begun before its first key and ended on the tab it
reached (navigatePiAsk returns that frame), and it counts an answer
turn at its end as well as its start. A card a poll reads during the
move still answers; a card read before it is refused, also after a
move away and back; a poll begun during the move and answered after it
changes nothing. pi's steps share the path.
Tests: the half-drawn review with colors; a poll run inside the step's
held key; a card from before a move away and back; a poll held across
the end of a move (holdSend/holdRead gates in the test herdr, no timers).
Co-authored-by: jpcarranza94 <52012198+jpcarranza94@users.noreply.github.com>
@jpcarranza94 thank you, this was a really useful review: a live run on 2.1.316, a failing test for the first bug, and a log that pinned down the second. Both are fixed in 6dac69b, with you credited as co-author.
1. The #2466 wait for a half-drawn screen, with steps. I applied your test and your fix order as written. Claude's responders now pick claudeStepStill before the target.steps branch. Your test failed before the change (Received: "Waiting for input") and passes after it.
2. A poll during a step. Your log was right: askingEnded at the end of a step retired the id a poll had just given the card. Dropping askingEnded alone brought two other problems to light, so a move now works like this:
It is an asking of its own, begun before its first key and ended on the tab it reached. navigatePiAsk now returns that frame. A card a poll reads during the move still answers afterwards.
A card read before the move is refused, including after a move away and back to the same tab.
It counts an answer turn when it ends as well as when it starts. A poll that began during the move and comes back after it changes nothing.
pi's steps share this path, so they get the same fix.
Each case has a deterministic test in server/prompt.test.ts, with no timers. The test herdr has two gates: holdSend answers the step's key only once a full poll has run, and holdRead keeps a poll's screen read open across the end of the step.
Validation:bun run check fast passes. server/dialogs/ + server/prompt.test.ts: 767 pass; PromptCard + promptAnswer: 46 pass. Live QA on a real Claude Code 2.1.312 pane, with the real server and Chrome: a two-arrow step, then Back followed at once by a step in the same page (your 409 case), then Back and a step on a phone. All 6 answers returned 200, each checked against the pane's highlighted tab.
The Desktop browser ✔ label: agreed. It is Claude's own mark in the option text, as you said, so it stays out of this PR.
One known edge, in the safe direction: a move that fails before any key is sent (a herdr RPC error) still starts its new asking. A retry from that card then returns 409 and the card reads the screen again.
@jpcarranza94 thank you, that live run found two real bugs. Both are fixed in 6dac69b: your test and fix order are in (with co-author credit), and a step is now its own asking, so a poll during a step no longer retires the card. The merge pass re-checked both: your test fails on 355118c and passes now, and the step tap after a poll answers 200 (409 before).
…e's tab moves do
A poll that read the card during an omo, Codex or Hermes move came back with a card the move had
already ended, so the next tap on it was refused (prompt_changed): the same bug #2503's review
found for Claude's tabs. A move is now a new asking begun before its first key; once it lands
the asking stands for the question it landed on, and the end of the move counts as an answer turn
so a read begun during it changes nothing. A move that fails after a key may have gone out still
ends the asking.
Merging 6dac69b (closes #2465, proposal A; the owner picked it for 0.4.22 and OK'd the screenshots): Claude Code's question card and its review list the questions as steps with Back, read from Claude's own tab bar; each arrow is checked against the highlighted tab before the next, otherwise 409 and the terminal. Strict review by the merge pass (omo code reviewer on Claude plus Codex Terra, real 2.1.312 fixtures): only ←/→ are sent and only into Claude's form; without colour evidence the card has no steps; Back never submits; watch devices cannot answer. Its MEDIUM (identical tabs shared a card id, so a stale answer could press Enter on the other question) and the half-redrawn-frame LOW were fixed in {H[:8]} with fail-first tests; delta re-checked clean (780 tests). @jpcarranza94 then live-tested it on Claude Code 2.1.316 and found two bugs (the half-drawn 'Waiting for input' card coming back after the last question, and a step tap after a poll answering 409); both are fixed in 6dac69b with his test and fix order (co-authored) and a move counted as its own asking; delta re-checked clean (2301 tests over 3 runs). LOW noted: a move can end on a half-drawn frame, so a card polled during it gets 409 (fails safe); a retry after a lost key reply gets 409 with no second key; with identical tabs, a colourless read while tab 1 is shown still yields tab 0's id (needs a failed colour read); after the first arrow only form and tab are re-checked and the 150 ms settle can accept the old question; the colour read adds a pane.read to each Claude poll; the read-to-send gap before pane.send_keys is shared with every prompt answer.
…ering (#2506)
## What was wrong
In Chat, an OmO question card with several questions lists them as
steps, but none can be tapped, and the card has no Back or Next. The
only way on was to answer. OmO's own form moves between its questions
with Tab and Shift+Tab (or ←/→) and leaves them unanswered (senpi
`ask-user-question-keys.js`, omo 5.1.51). Codex's `request_user_input`
(←/→ "to navigate questions") and Hermes's clarify batch (Tab/Shift+Tab
"switch question") had the same gap.
Investigated on every harness the card draws several questions for:
| Harness | TUI moves without answering | Card before | Card after |
|---|---|---|---|
| OmO form | Tab/→, Shift+Tab/←, through Submit | steps drawn, none
tappable; `step_index` → 400 | steps tappable, Back, Next |
| Codex `request_user_input` | ←/→ | "Question n of N" only | Back, Next
|
| Hermes clarify batch | Tab/Shift+Tab | the open question only | steps,
Back, Next |
| Claude AskUserQuestion | ←/→, Tab | none | #2503 (not touched here) |
| pi questionnaire | Tab/←→ | every step tappable, Back | unchanged |
| pi-ask tabs / ask_user, OpenCode form | — | Back and earlier steps |
unchanged here; going forward to an unanswered step is a follow-up PR |

its questions (`nativeSteps`: identity, place, keys). The answer route
sends one key at a time. Before each key the screen must show the form
and question the last key reached, and after it the next question on the
same form. Anything else returns 409 `prompt_changed`, and no more keys
go out. It sends only the form's two keys, never Enter, Space or text. A
move sent together with an answer, or with card edits the form does not
show, is refused with 400.
- OmO (`omo.ts`): every other tab is a step to tap, plus Back and Next
(Tab/Shift+Tab). Its review goes back to any question. Nothing is
offered while the typed-answer row is open, because Tab would save what
is typed there.
- Codex (`codex.ts`): Back and Next (←/→) when the hint says so. The
flags stay out of the card's id.
- Hermes (`hermes.ts`): the batch's questions become steps. The card
moves only between open questions with none answered in between, because
an answered question shows `✓` even while Tab is on it.
- Client: a Next button at the header's end. The card's unsent edits
hold the moves back on these agents, as they already do on pi. An
answered step is tappable only on forms that do not mark their own
steps.
Follows the agents' own TUIs: each one moves between questions without
answering, so the card does the same with the same keys. It differs from
the Claude and Codex apps, which show one question at a time with no
skip, because Ovis mirrors a terminal form whose state lives in the
agent.
Overlap with #2503 (Claude tabs): one line in `blocksStepNavigation`
(`src/lib/promptAnswer.ts`), so either PR can merge first with a
one-line rebase.
## Validation
- Failing first: `server/question-steps.test.ts` failed 11 of 14 on
main; the two new client tests failed on main's client. All pass after
the change.
- Mutation checks: the guard for Next without Next, the Codex Back
guard, the Hermes answered step, and the form-swap test each fail
without their code.
- Live, on an isolated herdr session with omo 5.1.51 (haiku via
cliproxy): GET/POST went Q1 → Next → Q2 → step 3 → Q3 → Back → Q2, with
omo still at `Submit (0/3 answered)`.
- Real UI in Chrome, Codex dark: at 390 the card moved on a touch tap of
Next and on a tap of a step; at 1280 it moved on clicks of Next and
Back. No page errors.
- `bun run check fast`: green on ff1e7a2.
- Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer APPROVE (4 findings, all fixed).
Codex `gpt-6.1-terra` fast xhigh: two findings fixed. A third (a form
swapped in mid-move) is covered by the identity checks before and after
each key, now pinned by a test. The typed-answer gating for Back and the
steps belongs to #2503's lines.
- Skipped: `check full` and the Windows VM (no change to Windows paths).

<!-- See CONTRIBUTING.md for checks, translations, contract tests and

## Change
Fixes#2520.
This is the family of #2464. #2466 gave Claude's question tabs
(`claude-question`, `claude-submit`) the `formMovedOn` wait. #2503 moved
that branch in front of `target.steps`. This PR puts Claude's other
dialogs in the same branch, and stops the fallback card over Claude's
own input box. It does not change the wait for questions, steps, omo
forms or model lists.
- `server/prompt.ts`, answer route: an answer to a tool approval, a plan
or the folder-trust check (`claude-approval`, `claude-plan`,
`claude-confirm`) now comes back once the pane shows the dialog closed
(20 reads, 50 ms apart, at most). Until now it came back right after the
keys. The client's read right after it got the dialog just answered,
under a new id, as a new card for two seconds.
- `claudeStepStill` also tells when one of these dialogs is still on
screen: the same responder with the same title, question and body. It
does not compare the options. The plan's typed feedback shows in its
last row, and that row then reads as a plain option, so the content id
changes. A fallback card still counts as still, as for the questions.
- `readPrompt`: no fallback card for a Claude pane whose screen ends in
Claude's own input box (the rows between the last two rules start with
`❯`, or `!` in bash mode). herdr says blocked a moment before Claude
draws its panel, and still 120–270 ms after the answer in my live runs.
In that window a poll got a "Waiting for input" card with Enter and Esc,
made of Claude's input box and footer. Now the poll gets no card, and
the wait above ends as soon as the panel is gone. An unknown Claude
dialog drawn between two rules still gets its fallback card.
- Both parts are needed: with the wait alone, the read after the answer
still gets the fallback card, one second later.
- The answer route now takes longer for these dialogs. It comes back
once Claude has closed the dialog, or after about one second when the
screen does not change. #2466 made the same trade for questions.
- The card now does what Claude Code's own terminal does: the answered
panel goes, and nothing stands in for it.
- The plan's feedback key does not matter here. The test passes with
Shift+Tab (main) and with Enter.
- Not changed:
- `claude-goal` and `claude-held` have the same shape, but my live runs
did not reach them.
- A timer poll that lands while the answer's keys are still going out.
The plan's typed feedback changes its id then too. That race is on the
client.
- Limit: a later Claude dialog drawn above its input box gets no
fallback card. The terminal still answers it.
- Changelog fragment: `changelog.d/claude-dialog-answer-wait.md`.
## Validation
- `server/prompt.test.ts`, new tests:
- "answers a tool approval / the folder-trust check / a plan, with
feedback only once Claude has closed it, so the read right after gets no
card": each panel gives way to Claude's input box 200 ms after the key,
and herdr still says blocked. The read right after the answer gets no
card.
- "shows no fallback card while Claude's own input box is still the
screen": herdr says blocked over the input box, then the Bash approval
comes.
- Guard: "still offers the fallback card for a Claude dialog no reader
knows, drawn between two rules".
- Red on `origin/main` (8d28829), 4 fail and 1 pass (the guard):
- Tool approval: `{title: "Bash command", sameId: false}`.
- Folder trust: `{title: "Accessing workspace", sameId: false}`.
- Plan: `{title: "Ready to code?", options: [..., "Keep the intro"],
sameId: false}`.
- Input box: `{title: "Waiting for input", question: "⏸ manual mode on",
options: [Enter, Esc]}`.
- With only the wait (no input-box rule), the same 4 fail. The 3 answer
tests get `{title: "Waiting for input"}`, after a wait of 1.1–1.2 s.
- Green with this PR: 5 pass. Also 5 pass with the plan feedback sent
with Enter instead of Shift+Tab.
- `server/prompt.test.ts` and `server/dialogs/claude.test.ts`: 447 pass,
14 skip, 0 fail. They take 81.2 s, against 76.1 s on `origin/main` (442
pass, 14 skip). Per test (`--reporter=junit`), four older tests answer a
Claude approval, plan or trust check whose fake screen never closes.
Each now waits out the second: 0.04 s → 1.14 s, 4.4 s in all. The 5 new
tests take 0.8 s.
- Through `bun run check run` (an isolated herdr session):
`server/prompt.contract.test.ts`, `omo-prompt.contract`, `omp.contract`,
`opencode-prompt.contract` and `opencode-answer.test.ts`: 73 pass, 1
skip, 0 fail. They take 91.9 s, against 88.5 s on `origin/main` (the
same counts).
- `bun run typecheck`: pass.
- `scripts/conventions.test.ts`, `server/conventions.test.ts`,
`src/conventions.test.ts` and `scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts`: 51 pass,
0 fail.
- Live, from my test runs (Claude Code 2.1.316, haiku, an isolated herdr
session, headless Chromium at 1280×800):
- Before (feb3ae0): 2 of 3 Bash approvals showed the "Waiting for
input" card for 2.0 s. The plan feedback came back as a stale, enabled
plan card for 2.1 s. Over four other runs, 6 of 7 answered approvals got
the stale approval or the fallback card.
- After, with this fix and my other Chat fixes applied together: 3 of 3
approvals went from the card to "Sending your answer…" to no card,
264–494 ms after the click. The answer came back 187–232 ms after the
click (107–208 ms before). The plan feedback left no stale card.
- I did not repeat the live run with this branch alone.
- Not run: `bun run check fast`. On this Mac it hangs on
`server/usage-login-private`. These files also fail on `main` here:
`scripts/check`, `scripts/self-hosted-runner`, `scripts/install-star`,
`scripts/ci-browser`, `scripts/ci-browser-parallel`, `server/codex`,
`server/codex-processes`, `server/session-history`, `server/letta`,
`server/remote-entry`, `server/core/composer-framing`,
`server/usage-login-private`, and sometimes `server/bridge`.

## Release 0.4.22
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing)
on main `41492320` (#2453 the last merge), refreshed to main `99a6671f`
(#2582 the last merge).
**Do not merge yet:** the owner tests main and judges the final build
before release. No tag and no Release run from this PR's author.
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.22 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.22` (2026-10-31,
local) folded 20 fragments into the 2026-10-31 section of `CHANGELOG.md`
(23 entries with the hand entry), linked their PRs and deleted the
fragments; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
- `by @login` on every outside contributor's PR link: #2453@jokkopucko,
#2452@jokkopucko, #2442@nahwan-kim, #2463@zerodice0, #2468@Yoonwoo-Ha, #2065@rabbitson87 (both entries), #2466@jpcarranza94,
#2467@jpcarranza94, #2457@YuuuXie, #2420@cheol-95 (both entries),
#2459@Haeminway1, #2450@briantcl1992, #2448@briantcl1992.
- One outside PR had no fragment and got an entry by hand: #2448
(installer test no longer finds the host's Node, Maintenance).
- Issue reporters: #2442's entry credits @Ploppy3, who asked for
herdr-core support in #2439. The other fixed issues were filed by the
PR's own author (#2460@zerodice0, #2464@jpcarranza94, #2419@cheol-95,
#2089@rabbitson87) or the maintainer (#2444), so the PR credit covers
them.
- Two fragments ran past the changelog's width (#2443, #2446); their
entries are re-wrapped, words unchanged.
- Folded after the PR opened (merge of main `653613cb`, by hand per the
release steps): #2474 (Pi Chat message with leading/trailing spaces, a
tab or a trailing `@mention` no longer stuck "waiting for transcript",
Fixed), credited `reported by @BeerBelly69` (he reported issue #2454;
the PR is the maintainer's, so the earlier `by @BeerBelly69` was
corrected in `90536524`). Its fragment is deleted; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. The release summaries are unchanged: their fixed list
is already at five lines.
- Folded in a second refresh (merge of main `98c1f5e0`, by hand): #2475
(a reconnecting or reloading browser gets back its follow-up's lost
"sent" receipt, Fixed), credited `reported by @christso`, who filed
#2421 and proposed the approach. Its fragment is deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`. The release summaries are unchanged (fixed list
already at five lines).
- Folded in a third refresh (merge of main `af20e0a4`, by hand): #2490
(Chat keeps its messages mounted when the pane's skill names load, so a
decoded image no longer drops back to its loading slot, Fixed), credited
`by @nocstah` (outside PR, no linked issue); #2483 (a Copilot turn stays
whole when its pictures pass the page window, Fixed); #2479 (Chat shows
the pictures in a Copilot CLI session, Added); #2482 (Chat shows the
picture attached to a Hermes prompt, Added). #2483, #2479 and #2482 are
maintainer PRs; #2483's issue #2478 is the maintainer's, so no reporter
credit. #2480 (site only) had no fragment. Their fragments are deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The release summaries are
unchanged: the fixed list is already at five lines, and the two new
picture features stay in the changelog only (the new list has room for
them if the owner wants them there).
- Folded in a fourth refresh (merge of main `4ca7d24d`, by hand): #2481
(Grok pictures in Chat), #2477 (svg figures, `reported by @affeek`, who
filed #2441 and co-authored the PR), #2498 (dollar math, `reported by
@kjohnsen`, #2407), #2484 (Expand thinking / Collapse work defaults,
`reported by @altgans and @Ploppy3`, #2346 and #2228) under Added; #2494
(`by @todor-a`), #2491 (`by @nocstah`), #2487, #2486, #2472 (`reported
by @matiemer`, #2462) and #2476 (relay session uses the server's port)
under Fixed. 10 fragments deleted; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
Every entry's credit was re-checked with GraphQL (PR author, closing
issues' authors, commit authors): #2487's #2374, #2486's #2485 and
#2483's #2478 are the maintainer's, so no reporter credit.
- Folded in a fifth refresh (merge of main `f5370d54`, by hand): #2503
(Claude question card steps and Back, `reported and co-authored by
@jpcarranza94`, who filed #2465 and co-authored the fix), #2502 (tab
name from its first message, `reported by @vibewriter-hand`, #2019) and
#2505 (a note on a diff line goes into the next message; #1603 is the
maintainer's, so no credit) under Added; #2506 (OmO, Codex and Hermes
question cards move between questions without answering; it closes no
issue, so no credit) under Fixed. 4 fragments deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`. #2499's hand-written relay entry is kept. All
four PRs are the maintainer's; credits re-checked with GraphQL (PR
author, closing issues' authors, commit authors).
- Sixth refresh (merge of main `feb3ae09`, head `e3b0dc37`): main had no
fragment left to fold. #2504 (the owner's PR, no fragment) gets a hand
entry under Added next to #2499's: the PC side of the relay, which
answers the relay's server proof, `/api/relay` start/stop routes
restricted to the owner and to direct connections, and a relay QR from
`plugin pair`; off by default with no Settings switch yet. No credit
(maintainer PR). It stays out of the release summaries (off by default,
no UI).
- Seventh refresh (merge of main `a683e3ff`, head `7855c73c`): folded
#2509's two fragments by hand, two entries under Added (the phone side
of the relay: the hosted shell that pairs from the PC's relay QR and
opens the app end-to-end encrypted; files and chat images through the
relay) and one under Fixed (the iOS and Android apps no longer show the
hosted shell's home-screen hint). Each says the relay is off by default.
#2499's entry now says Ovis uses the relay only once a PC's relay link
is started. No credit (maintainer PR). The fragments are deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The relay stays out of the release
summaries.
- Eighth refresh (merge of main `0b215abf`, head `f76f3ae4`): folded
#2514's three fragments by hand under Fixed (relay connection limits and
the 30 s wait for an absent PC, proof of the PC's relay key, the hosted
shell's copy-on-select and relay-control requests) and added a hand
entry for #2514 under Added: remote access through the Ovis relay can be
turned on in **Settings → Phone & devices** (off by default), with the
iOS and Android apps opening a relay-paired PC from its link;
app.ovis.sh is deployed separately. #2499, #2504 and #2509's entries no
longer say there is no Settings switch: they now say the relay is turned
on in Settings. No credit (maintainer PR). Also folded #2511 (Claude
task-list scan on file workers, Fixed, `by @duytbp`) and #2518 (feedback
typed on Claude Code's plan card keeps Claude planning, Fixed, `by
@jpcarranza94`, who also reported #2517, so no separate reporter
credit). #2515 is docs only, no fold. 5 fragments deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`.
- Ninth refresh (merge of main `fbb97b62`, head `44048d5f`, fold in the
merge commit): folded 23 fragments by hand: 7 entries under Added
(#2514's rewritten relay-identity entry, which replaces its old Fixed
entry about the PC's relay key; #2519 Letta model pill `by @homebodify`;
#2522 relay bulk window and the relay overview, self-hosting and
hosted-shell attestation; #2524 DeepSeek Harness in the catalog), 3
under Changed (#2533 Connect a phone dialog and the `tailscale serve`
box; #2539 chat pictures shown whole) and 26 under Fixed: #2508; #2512
`by @lifeofpi-ux`; #2516; #2521, #2526, #2531, #2538, #2541, #2543,
#2545, #2547, #2549 and #2551 `by @jpcarranza94`; #2527 `reported by
@duytbp` (#2510); #2532; #2535 `reported by @devtm1123` (#2513). #2532's
#2523 is the maintainer's; @jpcarranza94's issues (#2525, #2537, #2540,
#2542, #2544, #2546, #2548, #2550) are covered by his PR credit. #2529
(perf) is not merged and stays out of 0.4.22. 23 fragments deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
- Tenth refresh (merge of main `afdfb1e0`, head `1cfcfab7`, fold in the
merge commit), on the owner's OK for both: folded #2567 (Connect a phone
shows three choice cards and opens on the relay whenever it is offered,
with the relay's switch on its card on a tailnet; maintainer PR, no
credit) under Changed and #2555 (the New workspace folder picker's
compact row; `by @iwangjie`, no linked issue) under Fixed. 2 fragments
deleted; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The IMPROVED summary line
now says the relay needs no Tailscale, in en, ko, ja and zh.
- Eleventh refresh (merge of main `2b620462`, head `13fa0181`, fold in
the merge commit), on the owner's go for each: folded 13 entries from 12
fragments by hand. Changed: #2562 (a chat starts loading when the press
begins, `by @jpcarranza94`), #2574 (Quote a selection into the message
box), #2578 (the relay's switch, reset and failures only in Connect a
phone). Fixed: #2564 and #2560 (two entries) `by @jpcarranza94`; #2554
`by @iwangjie`; #2577; #2576 (the session-bound conversation cache,
fixing the two HIGHs the post-merge Codex Terra review reproduced in
#2562 and #2545); #2572 `reported by @rkqksk` (#2557); #2570 `reported
by @nathanvale` (#2566); #2571 `reported by @altgans` (#2568); #2575
`reported by @matiemer` (#2558). @jpcarranza94's own issues (#2559,
#2561, #2563) are covered by his PR credit. 12 fragments deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. IMPROVED summary: "Select words in
a Chat reply to quote them into your message." replaces the spacing
line, in en, ko, ja and zh.
- Twelfth refresh (merge of main `64ae5e72`, head `3ae2133e`), on Dori's
go: folded #2580 under Fixed (the Cloudflare relay closes both ends of a
pair after a frame send fails, so they reconnect at once; maintainer PR,
no credit) and deleted its fragment. #2579 (guide only) has no fragment.
Summaries unchanged.
- Thirteenth refresh (merge of main `99a6671f`, head `aebaabbf`), on
Dori's go: folded #2582 under Fixed (`by @iwangjie`: the folder picker's
Show hidden waits for a loading folder; the path bar wraps at very
narrow widths) and deleted its fragment. Summaries unchanged.
- Maintainer PRs without a fragment and without a user-facing change
have no entry: #2436 (relay crypto/mux foundations, not wired yet),
#2445 (CI contract test against a pinned hc).
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 8 new, 8 improved
and 8 fixed lines (8 is the most a list the app reads may hold, 90
characters a line). New: remote access through the Ovis relay, turned on
in Settings (off by default), with app.ovis.sh shipping separately
(#2514); pictures in Chat for Copilot, Grok and Hermes (#2479, #2481,
#2482); svg figures (#2477); math with dollar signs (#2498); Portal
sign-in with watch-only visitors (#2065); DeepSeek Harness in Settings →
Agents with its conversations in Chat on Linux (#2524, #2453); tab names
from the first message (#2502); notes on diff lines (#2505). Improved:
Expand thinking / Collapse work defaults (#2484), Chat spacing that
follows the font size (#2491), key bar drag reorder (#2463), same-host
links in an in-app popup on phones (#2459), Claude question cards with
steps and Back (#2503), OmO, Codex and Hermes cards with Back and Next
(#2506), one Connect a phone dialog (#2533), pictures shown whole
(#2539). Fixed: panes again on Safari 16.4–17.3 and iOS 16.4+ (#2535),
Stop with a queued follow-up keeps the stopped message (#2547), a first
message reaches Claude Code (#2526), Codex Chat after a finished answer
(#2443), question cards show at once and stay (#2543), Chat no longer
redraws turns or jumps (#2538, #2545), a setting kept across a quick
reload (#2487), Claude's plan card in narrow panes (#2541). Moved to the
changelog only to fit the 8-line lists: Codex behind Kiro (#2420), Pi
messages with spaces (#2474), the Claude question card between questions
(#2466, #2467, now covered by the question-card line), short-phone
overlap (#2494), cross-tab settings (#2486), the Antigravity note
(#2472), plus the subagent poll perf (#2527), relay transport (#2516),
herdr-core no-watch (#2512) and the other Fixed entries above.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 40 to 41 because
the bundle inputs (`server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock`) changed since
remote-v40. After merge: push `remote-v41` on the merged commit and wait
for the Remote PC bundles workflow before running Release.
- **Telemetry:** `telemetry/worker.ts` and `shared/telemetry.ts` are
unchanged since `telemetry/deployed.json`; no Worker deploy.
## Validation
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21`: before the bump it
asked to raise `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` from 40 to 41 and nothing else;
after it, "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel0422 -- bun run check fast` on this
branch: workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build,
unit tests all ok. Unit: 9827 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2474 (head `3de63b49`): `bun scripts/release-guards.ts
--base 653613c` "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and
release metadata are in order."; `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy
refresh2473 -- bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9827 pass, 0 fail, 41
skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2475 and correcting the #2474 credit (head `90536524`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base 653613c` "Release 0.4.22: remote
bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order.";
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy refresh2473b -- bun run check fast` all
ok, unit 9851 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2490, #2483, #2479 and #2482 (head `0da3756d`;
`e6eb7df6` removed the fragments and `0da3756d` adds their CHANGELOG
entries, which that commit left out): `bun scripts/release-guards.ts
--base 98c1f5e` "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and
release metadata are in order."; `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy
refresh2473c -- bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9855 pass, 0 fail, 41
skip in 623 files (with `TMPDIR` off the quota'd `/tmp` tmpfs; an
earlier run with the default `TMPDIR` hit `EDQUOT` there).
- After the fourth refresh (head `af31fa98`): `bun
scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main` both
"Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata
are in order." main still has `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 40 (no commit
since v0.4.21 touches it) and `remote-v41` is not tagged yet, so this
PR's 41 stays the one raise. `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473 --
bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9973 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 624
files.
- After the fifth refresh (head `b602a998`, merge of main `f5370d54`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`

run check fast` all ok, unit 10553 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 656 files;
release-notes tests 52 pass.
- Not run: `bun run check full` (integration and browser), left to CI;
no hands-on test of main, which is the owner's.
This is a release-metadata PR: it changes no code path. Per the release
steps, merge it after CI and the owner's go, then push `remote-v41`,
wait for its bundles, and run Release with `0.4.22`.

Change
Closes #2465 (proposal A, the smaller one).
Claude Code's AskUserQuestion card and its "Ready to submit your answers?" review now list the questions as steps, with Back, the way omo's and pi's forms already do (
steps,can_navigate,can_step_back,step_index).← ☒ Device ☐ Symptoms ✔ Submit →), whichclaudeTabsalready read. Claude draws the tab shown on a background (measured on Claude Code 2.1.312:48;2;177;185;249);claudeTabStepstakes the shown tab from that background and nothing else. Without that evidence (NO_COLOR, two tabs lit, no background, a bar the pane cut off) the card has no steps and answers as before.navigatePiAsk, now given the form's tab reader). Anything else (another tab, a changed bar, the prompt gone) stops with409 prompt_changedand leaves the rest to the terminal. Digit keys are never sent for a step. A Claude frame caught mid-redraw, whose colors cannot be checked, counts as no evidence and is read again; pi's reads behave as before.Device · 1 of 2), not with the first question still open. The design follows Claude Code's own terminal (its tab bar and ←/→) and the card's existing omo/pi step list. Screenshots (desktop 1280 and phone 390, Codex dark and light, from a live Claude Code 2.1.312 pane in the isolated
