feat(tabs): name a numbered tab from its first message (#2019) - #2502
A tab herdr still names by its number ("Tab 2") shows a few words of the first message its agent was given: about 24 columns, where a wide character counts as two, cut at a word's end with …. The tab's hover stays the pane's title. Tabs of the same agent can be told apart without opening each one.
An Ovis display label, never written to herdr. Labels are kept in the shared preferences as tab_labels, keyed <paneStorageId>|<terminal_id>. herdr reuses pane ids after a restart but never a terminal id, so a new pane never shows an old pane's words. On the server they live in their own tab-labels.json, like muted-panes.json, so an older release that rewrites preferences.json erases nothing. herdr's tab label, its TUI and the workspace name are untouched.
Reading never writes. A label read from a transcript shows on that page only. A user's action shares it with every browser: the New tab dialog's Start, or a message delivered from Chat to an agent's pane. Opening, reading or watching a page never sends PUT /api/preferences. A watching device shows the labels and learns none.
Privacy. Only the short label is stored (at most 64 UTF-16 units), never the message. A label leaves once a browser saw its pane and then saw it gone; that drop goes out with the next change someone makes. Turning the shared setting off deletes every stored label, and none is loaded or kept while it stays off. The setting's description says what is kept.
The labels file never blocks other preferences. A tab-labels.json that can't be read or written is logged, and the labels are left out of that save. Labels never count against the 64 KB size of a settings, pins or mutes save.
Where the words come from. The first line that names something is used: a slash command, a path or a code fence is skipped. Sources, for every agent whose first prompt Ovis knows:
the New tab dialog's first message;
a conversation page read from its beginning (cursor === null), for every transcript-backed agent;
a Chat send to a pane with no transcript, once it is delivered (not one held, queued or answering a question; never a shell pane).
Settings → Appearance → Name tabs from the first message: shared, on by default.
The palette footer names a tab the way the strip does.
Design follows the Codex app, which titles a thread from its first prompt, rather than asking the model for a title (a model call and a wait). DESIGN.md has the entry.
Contract
GET/PUT /api/preferences:
The document gains tab_labels: { "<paneStorageId>|<terminal_id>": label }. It is absent while none is kept, so an old document reads exactly as before. There are at most 64 labels (the oldest leave first), and each is one line of at most 64 units.
A PUT adds labels with tab_labels (a key already held keeps its label) and drops keys with tab_labels_removed. The server merges both per key, so two browsers saving at once lose neither's labels.
While autoTabNames is false the server keeps none.
A browser that gets an answer without the labels it sent treats the server as one that keeps none and sends no more, until its event stream reopens. Old clients ignore the fields.
Validation
bun run check fast: ok at 2c5e318 (unit tests 10055 pass, 0 fail).
CI's pane-mute-demo-regression and background-agent-detail-demo-regression were reproduced locally and pass now (exit 0).
Failing-first: each new test fails without its change, either on the earlier commit or under a mutation. They cover:
a pane id reused after a restart;
the purge when the setting is turned off;
concurrent saves;
a stale roster;
an answer landing after the pane closed;
reading never writing;
a removal alone sending nothing;
only agent panes learning from a send;
an unreadable or unwritable labels file, and the setting turned off over one;
labels left out for size;
a failed delete while the setting is off.
Browser QA on an isolated herdr test session (ovis-test-feat2019, fresh state dir, port 0, built dist/), with two browser contexts, all PASS with no page errors:
A (Chat) showed "Fix the login redirect…"; the hover stayed the pane title.
Reading the transcript shared nothing: B still showed "Tab 1", and no tab-labels.json existed.
After a Chat send in A, B showed the label without a reload.
The file held only the short label under <pane>|<terminal>; herdr's tab label stayed "1" and the workspace name was unchanged.
A rename to "auth work" and to "codex" was kept; a rename back to "1" brought the label back.
Turning the setting off showed "Tab 1" in both browsers and emptied the file.
Screenshots at desktop 1280 and phone 390, Codex dark and light.
Codex Terra reviews (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh; never Astra) over every round. Each finding was fixed, except one accepted edge, explained in the PR comments: old labels can return after a restart only if every delete of the file fails while the setting is off, through the save that turns it back on.
Skipped: check full (CI runs Integration and browser).
This changes the /api/preferences HTTP contract, so it waits for a real review.
A tab herdr still names by its number shows a few words of the first message its
agent was given, with the whole first line on hover. The line is an Ovis display
label kept per pane in the shared preferences (tab_labels, its own tab-labels.json),
so every browser shows it; herdr's tab label and the workspace name are never
written. A name someone gave the tab is never covered. Settings > Name tabs from
the first message (shared, on by default) turns it off.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

New Features
Numbered tabs can now display a shortened preview of their first message, with the full message available on hover.
Automatic tab naming is on by default and can be turned off in Appearance settings.
Automatically generated names are shared across server browsers.
Bug Fixes
User-assigned tab names and herdr’s own tab names remain unchanged.
The change adds a default-on setting that can show a shortened first-message label for eligible tabs. It learns and synchronizes labels per pane, preserves custom and workspace names, and shows the full first line in the tab’s hover title.
Adds the shared autoTabNames setting, label validation and merging, and first-line extraction and truncation. The Appearance page exposes the setting, which defaults to enabled.
Learns labels from successful session launches, conversation reads, and eligible Chat sends when automatic naming is enabled.
Label synchronization and persistence src/lib/preferencesSync.ts, src/lib/preferencesSync.test.ts, server/preferences.ts, server/preferences.test.ts, site/demo/transport.ts
Synchronizes pane labels through preferences and stores them separately in tab-labels.json. Tests cover validation, accumulation, and persistence behavior.
Displays automatic labels for eligible tabs in the tab strip and command palette. Custom names and pending renames take precedence. Documentation describes the feature.
Unusual label-file failures can disrupt preference saves or show labels that will not survive a restart. Some panes can also receive the wrong label. These are bounded issues to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: numbered tabs get a label taken from the first message. It follows the conventional-commit style and fits the changeset, which adds this behavior across the server, shared preferences, and UI. The issue number is included in the title, which is acceptable.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2019 coding requirements are covered. autoTabLabel uses the first learned line only while herdr supplies a default numbered or empty label. It preserves explicit labels, including agent or script names. shortTabLabel provides the bounded tab text and the full line for hover. learnFromConversation, learnFromSend, and learnTabLabel cover the required first-message sources and learn once. autoTabNames is shared and enabled by default. The tab-label preference contract, separate persistence, synchronization, settings UI, palette footer, and focused tests are included. The implementation does not write herdr tab labels or workspace names.

Strict review by the merge pass at e8559d9. Changes requested: one reproduced HIGH. Touched tests 177/177, conventions 58/58 and typecheck pass; watch-device gating, old-client compatibility, the add-only cross-device merge, i18n and DESIGN.md hold up.
HIGH, reproduced:src/lib/tabLabels.ts:95 with shared/preferences.ts:81: a label is written once per pane id and never removed when the tab closes. herdr reuses pane ids after a restart (server/completion.ts:36), so a new tab shows the old session's first prompt and can never learn its own. Key the label to something that does not survive the pane (e.g. pane id plus the agent session or a creation stamp), or drop it when the pane goes away, with a test that reuses a pane id.
MEDIUM:
src/components/TabStrip.tsx:473: the tab's hover now shows the prompt instead of the agent's or herdr's pane title; keep the title in the hover.
Privacy: up to 120 characters of the first line are stored in plain text in tab-labels.json and synced to every paired device, watch-only included, and turning the setting off leaves them. Default-on is fine with a note in Settings and a purge when the setting is turned off (and for closed tabs, per the HIGH).
LOW:shared/preferences.ts:68 doesn't check the key format, so hostile long keys can fill the 64 KB document (later label saves get 413; settings still save); slash commands, paths and code-fence lines become labels (tabLabels.ts:49); comments say agent-named tabs get labels but only number-named tabs do (ChatView.tsx:1517, TabStrip.tsx:129, shared/preferences.ts:33); the demo error text omits tab_labels (site/demo/transport.ts:371).

… purge when off
Merge-pass round on #2502: a label is keyed <pane>|<terminal> so a pane id
herdr reuses after a restart never shows an old label, and leaves once a
browser saw its pane gone. Only a few words are stored, the hover stays the
pane title, and the server deletes every label when the shared setting is
turned off. Labels sync as per-key additions and removals the server merges,
so concurrent saves lose nothing. Slash commands, paths and code fences name
no tab; label keys are validated.
HIGH (pane id reuse): labels are keyed <paneStorageId>|<terminal_id>; herdr never reuses a terminal id, so a reused pane id never shows an old label. A label leaves once a browser saw its pane and then saw it gone, so a stale roster deletes nothing. Tested: pane id reuse after a restart, a stale roster, and an answer that lands after the pane closed.
MEDIUM hover: the tab's hover stays the pane title (TabStrip.tsx back to the original title).
MEDIUM privacy: only the short label is stored (at most 64 units), never the message. The server deletes every label when autoTabNames turns off and keeps none while it is off (server/preferences.test.ts "purges every stored tab label…", which failed on e8559d9). A watching device learns nothing. The setting's description says what is kept, in en/ko/ja/zh.
LOWs: label keys are validated by format, so free-text keys are refused; slash commands, paths and code fences are skipped; comments and DESIGN.md now say number-named tabs only; the demo error text names the new fields.
Sync is now per-key additions and removals that the server merges (tab_labels, tab_labels_removed), after Terra found that whole-map saves lost concurrent labels. Terra's re-checks: all findings fixed (details in the PR body).
bun run check fast ok; browser QA on the isolated test session all PASS. Screenshots refreshed in ~/.dori/reports/feat-2019/.
Also fixed: my first commit had dropped three lines of the DESIGN.md "Tab strip" bullet ("Pane actions are not tab actions…"); they are restored, and the diff against main removes no line.
Delta review by the merge pass at afa32b5: the HIGH is fixed (labels keyed pane|terminal_id; my restart repro shows no old label), as are the hover (pane title again), words-only labels, purge on disable (clears tab-labels.json; watch devices refused at the dispatch.ts:356 gate), the key regex (shared/preferences.ts:49), the 64 KB cap (worst case 29.5 KB) and the four LOWs. 188 tests, conventions and typecheck pass.
Before merge, please:
MEDIUM, reproduced by mutation:src/lib/tabLabels.test.ts:91-97: "learns nothing while the setting is off" passes only because of test order; seen, gone and pending are never reset between tests, so with the learning gate removed the file still passes (the test alone fails). Reset that state per test.
The two open CodeRabbit Minors: an unreadable tab-labels.json blocks every preferences save (server/preferences.ts), and the immediate-send path can label a non-agent pane from a shell command (PaneTerminal.tsx:906).
LOW, for the merge note: labels are dropped only by a browser that saw the pane close, so without one a label stays until 64 newer ones or the setting is off (Settings and DESIGN.md say "until the tab closes"); a connected PC with an empty roster drops every label that page saw, with no grace period (no real path to an empty connected roster found); moving a tab to another workspace drops its label.
… learn from a send
Merge-pass follow-up on #2502: tab-labels.json is read only for a change that
touches the labels (the setting turned off included), and one that cannot be
read leaves the labels alone while the settings, pins and mutes still save.
A Chat send labels only an agent's pane, never a shell's. Label tests reset
the module state before each, so each stands alone.
Delta review by the merge pass at 22d1315: the test leak is fixed (rerun-each 3, --randomize over 4 seeds, each test alone), a change's labels are dropped without touching the file, only agent panes learn from a send, and the earlier fixes hold. Tests 165/0, neighbours 174/0, typecheck clean. But one HIGH, so it waits for one more small push:
HIGH, reproduced:server/preferences.ts:120,137,150: after {autoTabNames:false} is saved while tab-labels.json is unreadable (e.g. a directory in its place), every later save that does not carry autoTabNames throws EISDIR as a 500, because nextTabLabels empties the labels and readLabels() at :150 throws. The client sends only changed settings (src/lib/preferencesSync.ts:63-75), so settings, pins and mutes stop saving until a restart or the file is readable again. Clear the in-memory labels on a failed read and keep :150 from throwing; add a test for off-then-another-save with an unreadable file.
MEDIUM (part of the HIGH): turning the setting off with an unreadable file keeps the labels on disk and logs it, which is fine, but memory and the response also keep tab_labels while autoTabNames is false.
LOW:src/lib/tabLabels.ts:168 is a test-only export.
…utes
Merge-pass HIGH on #2502: after the setting was turned off over an unreadable
tab-labels.json, later saves failed with EISDIR. A label read or write that
fails is now logged and leaves the labels out of that save and of memory,
never throwing. Labels that do not fit beside the other preferences are left
out of the document (their file untouched) instead of failing the save. While
the setting is off no label is loaded, and a delete that failed goes again with
each save until it is done.
tab-labels.json can no longer fail a save. A label read or write that fails is logged, and the labels are left out of that save and out of memory. It never throws: only the mutes and preferences.json can still refuse a save, as before.
Failing-first test, your exact sequence: server/preferences.test.ts "after the setting is turned off over an unreadable labels file, every later save of a setting, pin or mute goes through". It runs twice, once with the file unreadable from startup and once with it readable at startup and broken later. Each time it turns the setting off, then saves a pin, a mute and a setting, then restarts. On 22d1315 the later save throws EISDIR.
Terra 6.1 follow-ups (no Astra), each with a test that fails without its fix:
Labels no longer count against the 64 KB check of a settings, pins or mutes save. Labels that don't fit are left out of the document, and their file is untouched.
While the setting is off, no label is loaded, so a delete that failed can't come back after a restart. The delete runs again with each save until it is done, including the save that turns the setting back on.
A label failure followed by a failed mute write leaves no stale labels in memory.
Accepted and not coded (corrected): a delete that fails when the setting is turned off is retried by every save while the setting stays off. The old short labels can come back after a restart only if every one of those deletes fails, the last one being the save that turns the setting back on: after that save nothing retries, and a restart with the setting on loads the file. That takes every write of the same file failing, and the labels are the user's own few words on their own server.
bun run check fast: ok (10054 pass, 0 fail).
An earlier run had 3 timeouts in scripts/typecheck.test.ts (5 s Go compiler waits at load average 50). That file is unrelated to this change and passes on its own (8/8).
Delta review by the merge pass at 0bcb511: no HIGH. The EISDIR HIGH no longer reproduces over HTTP; unreadable-mid-run, EACCES on read and write, ENOSPC on rename, off→on→label add and mute/pin while failing all answered 200 with settings, pins and mutes saved. Tests 1425/0 with --rerun-each 3, typecheck clean.
One line before merge, please:
MEDIUM, reproduced:server/preferences.ts:158,161,188: when the labels don't fit, they leave memory but labelsUnsettled stays false, so a later off never deletes tab-labels.json (60 labels came back after on plus a restart, with no failed write) and the next label add overwrites the held labels. It needs a document of about 60 KB. Set labelsUnsettled = true there, with a test.
LOW: the accepted double-failure edge is fine, but its labels come back on the next label add in the same run, not only after a restart; please correct the PR comment.
…s turned off
Merge-pass MEDIUM on #2502: labels that do not fit beside the other preferences
stay in tab-labels.json, so the store marks that file unread: turning the
setting off deletes it, and the next label added is laid over the held ones
instead of replacing them.
CI at 18bf7a5: Integration and browser failed in two existing browser checks, each twice (so not a flake), and both point at this PR's preferences changes:
scripts/pane-mute-demo-regression.ts:355: "GET of a pre-feature document carries the empty list" expects { revision: 3, settings: {}, pins: [], muted_panes: [] }; GET of a document from before this feature now answers something else (an added field such as tab_labels, presumably). Either keep the old shape when there are no labels, or update the check if the new field is intended (the contract must stay readable by older clients).
scripts/background-agent-detail-demo-regression.ts:359: "only reads went out": a non-GET request went out during a read-only flow; most likely a POST /api/preferences from label learning or the drop-when-gone bookkeeping. A page that only looks must not write shared preferences.
Logs: run 41219433000, job Browser regression (other scripts).
…nces
CI on #2502 (pane-mute and background-agent-detail demo regressions): opening a
pane in Chat learned a label from its transcript and sent PUT /api/preferences.
A label read from a transcript is now this page's alone; only a user's action
shares it (the New tab dialog's Start, a message delivered from Chat to an
agent's pane, which also shares the label read for that pane). A label dropped
because its pane was seen gone goes out with the next change someone makes,
never on its own.
CI failure fixed at 2c5e318 (one push). Both scripts were reproduced and now pass locally with the feature on (its default).
Cause: opening a pane in Chat read its transcript from the beginning, learned a label, and sent PUT /api/preferences from a read-only path. That broke background-agent-detail-demo-regression:359 ("only reads went out") and moved the document under pane-mute-demo-regression:355 (revision 4 with tab_labels). The preferences response shape itself is unchanged: tab_labels is only added, and is absent while none is kept.
Fix:
A label read from a transcript is that page's alone, shown but never sent.
Only a user's action shares it: the New tab dialog's Start, or a message delivered from Chat to an agent's pane, which also shares the label already read for that pane.
A watching device learns nothing.
A label dropped because its pane was seen gone goes out with the next change someone makes, never on its own.
Tests:
src/lib/tabLabels.test.ts: "keeps a label read from a transcript this page's own, and shares it with the user's first send" (fails when a read is allowed to share).
src/lib/preferencesSync.test.ts: a removal alone sends nothing (fails on 18bf7a5).
Runs:
bun scripts/pane-mute-demo-regression.ts: exit 0.
bun scripts/background-agent-detail-demo-regression.ts: exit 0.
bun run check fast: ok (10055 pass, 0 fail).
Browser QA on the test session: reading the transcript in browser A wrote nothing (B still showed "Tab 1" and no tab-labels.json existed); after A's Chat send, B showed the label without a reload. Every other scenario passed, as before.
Delta review by the merge pass at 2c5e318: the GET shape is back to exactly the old document plus tab_labels when there are labels (checked against the server and the pane-mute script); reading and watching send no preferences write; gone-pane drops are delayed and never touch another device's labels; sharing happens only on Start or a delivered send; scripts, 82 tests and typecheck pass. But one HIGH:
HIGH, reproduced:src/lib/tabLabels.ts:123-126 and :155-181: turning the setting off clears pending but not the new page-only labels (localLabels). A label read from a transcript survives off, shows again after on, and the next delivered Chat send to that pane shares it with the server (:206-215). Turning the setting off must drop the page-only labels too. MEDIUM: no test turns the setting off and on with a page-only label (src/lib/tabLabels.test.ts:105-123); add one that fails today.
LOW: a page that switches to watching keeps showing its own labels but sends nothing; page-only and shared labels are capped separately, so the tabs can show more than the cap.
Merge-pass HIGH on #2502: a label read from a transcript (this page's alone)
survived the setting turned off, came back when it was on again, and the next
Chat send shared it. Turning the setting off now deletes those labels and any
label still waiting for its pane, in every open page.
HIGH fixed at 0019784 (one push). Turning Auto tab names off now deletes this page's own labels (the ones read from a transcript) and any label still waiting for its pane. Every open page gets the shared setting through the preferences sync and runs setTabLabelLearning (App), so this happens in every tab. The server already deletes the shared labels.
Failing-first test: src/lib/tabLabels.test.ts "turning the setting off deletes this page's own labels, so none comes back when it is on again, nor with a send". It reads a label, leaves one pending, turns the setting off and on, then sends. Nothing is shown and nothing is shared. It fails with the fix removed. bun run check fast: ok (10056 pass, 0 fail).
Merging 0019784 (closes #2019; the owner picked it for 0.4.22 and saw the screenshots): a numbered tab whose label is only the agent's default name gets a short label from its first message; labels are shared through /api/preferences (tab_labels), keyed to the pane and its terminal, dropped when the pane is gone and purged when Settings > Auto tab names is turned off. They never replace a manual rename, an agent or herdr title, or herdr's own label. Strict review by the merge pass found a HIGH (labels keyed by pane id alone, so a reused pane id after a herdr restart showed the old prompt), privacy and hover MEDIUMs and LOWs; lane feat-2019 fixed them in afa32b5, and 22d1315 fixed the delta's test-order leak and both CodeRabbit Minors (an unreadable labels file no longer blocks settings saves; only agent panes learn from a send); 0bcb511 made an unreadable labels file unable to fail any save (the delta's EISDIR HIGH) and 18bf7a5 marks labels left out for their size as unread, so turning the setting off still deletes them; 2c5e318 stopped any preferences write while a page only reads or watches (the GET of an older document keeps its old shape), and 0019784 clears page-only labels when the setting is turned off; delta re-checked clean (83 tests, both affected browser scripts). LOW noted: a tab that was offline for both the off and the on keeps its page-only labels and can share them on its next send (the transcript would teach the same label again); page-only and shared labels are capped separately, so the tabs can show more than the cap; labels are dropped only by a browser that saw the pane close, so without one a label stays until 64 newer ones or the setting is off; a connected PC reporting an empty roster drops the labels that page saw, with no grace period; moving a tab to another workspace drops its label; with an unreadable labels file, turning the setting off keeps the old labels (logged).
## Release 0.4.22
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing)
on main `41492320` (#2453 the last merge), refreshed to main `99a6671f`
(#2582 the last merge).
**Do not merge yet:** the owner tests main and judges the final build
before release. No tag and no Release run from this PR's author.
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.22 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.22` (2026-10-31,
local) folded 20 fragments into the 2026-10-31 section of `CHANGELOG.md`
(23 entries with the hand entry), linked their PRs and deleted the
fragments; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
- `by @login` on every outside contributor's PR link: #2453@jokkopucko,
#2452@jokkopucko, #2442@nahwan-kim, #2463@zerodice0, #2468@Yoonwoo-Ha, #2065@rabbitson87 (both entries), #2466@jpcarranza94,
#2467@jpcarranza94, #2457@YuuuXie, #2420@cheol-95 (both entries),
#2459@Haeminway1, #2450@briantcl1992, #2448@briantcl1992.
- One outside PR had no fragment and got an entry by hand: #2448
(installer test no longer finds the host's Node, Maintenance).
- Issue reporters: #2442's entry credits @Ploppy3, who asked for
herdr-core support in #2439. The other fixed issues were filed by the
PR's own author (#2460@zerodice0, #2464@jpcarranza94, #2419@cheol-95,
#2089@rabbitson87) or the maintainer (#2444), so the PR credit covers
them.
- Two fragments ran past the changelog's width (#2443, #2446); their
entries are re-wrapped, words unchanged.
- Folded after the PR opened (merge of main `653613cb`, by hand per the
release steps): #2474 (Pi Chat message with leading/trailing spaces, a
tab or a trailing `@mention` no longer stuck "waiting for transcript",
Fixed), credited `reported by @BeerBelly69` (he reported issue #2454;
the PR is the maintainer's, so the earlier `by @BeerBelly69` was
corrected in `90536524`). Its fragment is deleted; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. The release summaries are unchanged: their fixed list
is already at five lines.
- Folded in a second refresh (merge of main `98c1f5e0`, by hand): #2475
(a reconnecting or reloading browser gets back its follow-up's lost
"sent" receipt, Fixed), credited `reported by @christso`, who filed
#2421 and proposed the approach. Its fragment is deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`. The release summaries are unchanged (fixed list
already at five lines).
- Folded in a third refresh (merge of main `af20e0a4`, by hand): #2490
(Chat keeps its messages mounted when the pane's skill names load, so a
decoded image no longer drops back to its loading slot, Fixed), credited
`by @nocstah` (outside PR, no linked issue); #2483 (a Copilot turn stays
whole when its pictures pass the page window, Fixed); #2479 (Chat shows
the pictures in a Copilot CLI session, Added); #2482 (Chat shows the
picture attached to a Hermes prompt, Added). #2483, #2479 and #2482 are
maintainer PRs; #2483's issue #2478 is the maintainer's, so no reporter
credit. #2480 (site only) had no fragment. Their fragments are deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The release summaries are
unchanged: the fixed list is already at five lines, and the two new
picture features stay in the changelog only (the new list has room for
them if the owner wants them there).
- Folded in a fourth refresh (merge of main `4ca7d24d`, by hand): #2481
(Grok pictures in Chat), #2477 (svg figures, `reported by @affeek`, who
filed #2441 and co-authored the PR), #2498 (dollar math, `reported by
@kjohnsen`, #2407), #2484 (Expand thinking / Collapse work defaults,
`reported by @altgans and @Ploppy3`, #2346 and #2228) under Added; #2494
(`by @todor-a`), #2491 (`by @nocstah`), #2487, #2486, #2472 (`reported
by @matiemer`, #2462) and #2476 (relay session uses the server's port)
under Fixed. 10 fragments deleted; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
Every entry's credit was re-checked with GraphQL (PR author, closing
issues' authors, commit authors): #2487's #2374, #2486's #2485 and
#2483's #2478 are the maintainer's, so no reporter credit.
- Folded in a fifth refresh (merge of main `f5370d54`, by hand): #2503
(Claude question card steps and Back, `reported and co-authored by
@jpcarranza94`, who filed #2465 and co-authored the fix), #2502 (tab
name from its first message, `reported by @vibewriter-hand`, #2019) and
#2505 (a note on a diff line goes into the next message; #1603 is the
maintainer's, so no credit) under Added; #2506 (OmO, Codex and Hermes
question cards move between questions without answering; it closes no
issue, so no credit) under Fixed. 4 fragments deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`. #2499's hand-written relay entry is kept. All
four PRs are the maintainer's; credits re-checked with GraphQL (PR
author, closing issues' authors, commit authors).
- Sixth refresh (merge of main `feb3ae09`, head `e3b0dc37`): main had no
fragment left to fold. #2504 (the owner's PR, no fragment) gets a hand
entry under Added next to #2499's: the PC side of the relay, which
answers the relay's server proof, `/api/relay` start/stop routes
restricted to the owner and to direct connections, and a relay QR from
`plugin pair`; off by default with no Settings switch yet. No credit
(maintainer PR). It stays out of the release summaries (off by default,
no UI).
- Seventh refresh (merge of main `a683e3ff`, head `7855c73c`): folded
#2509's two fragments by hand, two entries under Added (the phone side
of the relay: the hosted shell that pairs from the PC's relay QR and
opens the app end-to-end encrypted; files and chat images through the
relay) and one under Fixed (the iOS and Android apps no longer show the
hosted shell's home-screen hint). Each says the relay is off by default.
#2499's entry now says Ovis uses the relay only once a PC's relay link
is started. No credit (maintainer PR). The fragments are deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The relay stays out of the release
summaries.
- Eighth refresh (merge of main `0b215abf`, head `f76f3ae4`): folded
#2514's three fragments by hand under Fixed (relay connection limits and
the 30 s wait for an absent PC, proof of the PC's relay key, the hosted
shell's copy-on-select and relay-control requests) and added a hand
entry for #2514 under Added: remote access through the Ovis relay can be
turned on in **Settings → Phone & devices** (off by default), with the
iOS and Android apps opening a relay-paired PC from its link;
app.ovis.sh is deployed separately. #2499, #2504 and #2509's entries no
longer say there is no Settings switch: they now say the relay is turned
on in Settings. No credit (maintainer PR). Also folded #2511 (Claude
task-list scan on file workers, Fixed, `by @duytbp`) and #2518 (feedback
typed on Claude Code's plan card keeps Claude planning, Fixed, `by
@jpcarranza94`, who also reported #2517, so no separate reporter
credit). #2515 is docs only, no fold. 5 fragments deleted; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`.
- Ninth refresh (merge of main `fbb97b62`, head `44048d5f`, fold in the
merge commit): folded 23 fragments by hand: 7 entries under Added
(#2514's rewritten relay-identity entry, which replaces its old Fixed
entry about the PC's relay key; #2519 Letta model pill `by @homebodify`;
#2522 relay bulk window and the relay overview, self-hosting and
hosted-shell attestation; #2524 DeepSeek Harness in the catalog), 3
under Changed (#2533 Connect a phone dialog and the `tailscale serve`
box; #2539 chat pictures shown whole) and 26 under Fixed: #2508; #2512
`by @lifeofpi-ux`; #2516; #2521, #2526, #2531, #2538, #2541, #2543,
#2545, #2547, #2549 and #2551 `by @jpcarranza94`; #2527 `reported by
@duytbp` (#2510); #2532; #2535 `reported by @devtm1123` (#2513). #2532's
#2523 is the maintainer's; @jpcarranza94's issues (#2525, #2537, #2540,
#2542, #2544, #2546, #2548, #2550) are covered by his PR credit. #2529
(perf) is not merged and stays out of 0.4.22. 23 fragments deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`.
- Tenth refresh (merge of main `afdfb1e0`, head `1cfcfab7`, fold in the
merge commit), on the owner's OK for both: folded #2567 (Connect a phone
shows three choice cards and opens on the relay whenever it is offered,
with the relay's switch on its card on a tailnet; maintainer PR, no
credit) under Changed and #2555 (the New workspace folder picker's
compact row; `by @iwangjie`, no linked issue) under Fixed. 2 fragments
deleted; `changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. The IMPROVED summary line
now says the relay needs no Tailscale, in en, ko, ja and zh.
- Eleventh refresh (merge of main `2b620462`, head `13fa0181`, fold in
the merge commit), on the owner's go for each: folded 13 entries from 12
fragments by hand. Changed: #2562 (a chat starts loading when the press
begins, `by @jpcarranza94`), #2574 (Quote a selection into the message
box), #2578 (the relay's switch, reset and failures only in Connect a
phone). Fixed: #2564 and #2560 (two entries) `by @jpcarranza94`; #2554
`by @iwangjie`; #2577; #2576 (the session-bound conversation cache,
fixing the two HIGHs the post-merge Codex Terra review reproduced in
#2562 and #2545); #2572 `reported by @rkqksk` (#2557); #2570 `reported
by @nathanvale` (#2566); #2571 `reported by @altgans` (#2568); #2575
`reported by @matiemer` (#2558). @jpcarranza94's own issues (#2559,
#2561, #2563) are covered by his PR credit. 12 fragments deleted;
`changelog.d` holds only `README.md`. IMPROVED summary: "Select words in
a Chat reply to quote them into your message." replaces the spacing
line, in en, ko, ja and zh.
- Twelfth refresh (merge of main `64ae5e72`, head `3ae2133e`), on Dori's
go: folded #2580 under Fixed (the Cloudflare relay closes both ends of a
pair after a frame send fails, so they reconnect at once; maintainer PR,
no credit) and deleted its fragment. #2579 (guide only) has no fragment.
Summaries unchanged.
- Thirteenth refresh (merge of main `99a6671f`, head `aebaabbf`), on
Dori's go: folded #2582 under Fixed (`by @iwangjie`: the folder picker's
Show hidden waits for a loading folder; the path bar wraps at very
narrow widths) and deleted its fragment. Summaries unchanged.
- Maintainer PRs without a fragment and without a user-facing change
have no entry: #2436 (relay crypto/mux foundations, not wired yet),
#2445 (CI contract test against a pinned hc).
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 8 new, 8 improved
and 8 fixed lines (8 is the most a list the app reads may hold, 90
characters a line). New: remote access through the Ovis relay, turned on
in Settings (off by default), with app.ovis.sh shipping separately
(#2514); pictures in Chat for Copilot, Grok and Hermes (#2479, #2481,
#2482); svg figures (#2477); math with dollar signs (#2498); Portal
sign-in with watch-only visitors (#2065); DeepSeek Harness in Settings →
Agents with its conversations in Chat on Linux (#2524, #2453); tab names
from the first message (#2502); notes on diff lines (#2505). Improved:
Expand thinking / Collapse work defaults (#2484), Chat spacing that
follows the font size (#2491), key bar drag reorder (#2463), same-host
links in an in-app popup on phones (#2459), Claude question cards with
steps and Back (#2503), OmO, Codex and Hermes cards with Back and Next
(#2506), one Connect a phone dialog (#2533), pictures shown whole
(#2539). Fixed: panes again on Safari 16.4–17.3 and iOS 16.4+ (#2535),
Stop with a queued follow-up keeps the stopped message (#2547), a first
message reaches Claude Code (#2526), Codex Chat after a finished answer
(#2443), question cards show at once and stay (#2543), Chat no longer
redraws turns or jumps (#2538, #2545), a setting kept across a quick
reload (#2487), Claude's plan card in narrow panes (#2541). Moved to the
changelog only to fit the 8-line lists: Codex behind Kiro (#2420), Pi
messages with spaces (#2474), the Claude question card between questions
(#2466, #2467, now covered by the question-card line), short-phone
overlap (#2494), cross-tab settings (#2486), the Antigravity note
(#2472), plus the subagent poll perf (#2527), relay transport (#2516),
herdr-core no-watch (#2512) and the other Fixed entries above.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 40 to 41 because
the bundle inputs (`server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock`) changed since
remote-v40. After merge: push `remote-v41` on the merged commit and wait
for the Remote PC bundles workflow before running Release.
- **Telemetry:** `telemetry/worker.ts` and `shared/telemetry.ts` are
unchanged since `telemetry/deployed.json`; no Worker deploy.
## Validation
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21`: before the bump it
asked to raise `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` from 40 to 41 and nothing else;
after it, "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel0422 -- bun run check fast` on this
branch: workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build,
unit tests all ok. Unit: 9827 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2474 (head `3de63b49`): `bun scripts/release-guards.ts
--base 653613c` "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and
release metadata are in order."; `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy
refresh2473 -- bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9827 pass, 0 fail, 41
skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2475 and correcting the #2474 credit (head `90536524`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base 653613c` "Release 0.4.22: remote
bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order.";
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy refresh2473b -- bun run check fast` all
ok, unit 9851 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 623 files.
- After folding #2490, #2483, #2479 and #2482 (head `0da3756d`;
`e6eb7df6` removed the fragments and `0da3756d` adds their CHANGELOG
entries, which that commit left out): `bun scripts/release-guards.ts
--base 98c1f5e` "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and
release metadata are in order."; `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy
refresh2473c -- bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9855 pass, 0 fail, 41
skip in 623 files (with `TMPDIR` off the quota'd `/tmp` tmpfs; an
earlier run with the default `TMPDIR` hit `EDQUOT` there).
- After the fourth refresh (head `af31fa98`): `bun
scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main` both
"Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata
are in order." main still has `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 40 (no commit
since v0.4.21 touches it) and `remote-v41` is not tagged yet, so this
PR's 41 stays the one raise. `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473 --
bun run check fast` all ok, unit 9973 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 624
files.
- After the fifth refresh (head `b602a998`, merge of main `f5370d54`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41).
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473c -- bun run check fast` all ok,
unit 10107 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 631 files.
- After the sixth refresh (head `e3b0dc37`, merge of main `feb3ae09`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41).
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473d -- bun run check fast` all ok,
unit 10123 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 632 files.
- After the seventh refresh (head `7855c73c`, merge of main `a683e3ff`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41).
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473e -- bun run check fast` all ok,
unit 10314 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 644 files.
- After the eighth refresh (head `f76f3ae4`, merge of main `0b215abf`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." #2514's and #2511's `server/` changes land
before `remote-v41` is tagged, so `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41.
`UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473g -- bun run check fast` all ok,
unit 10363 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 649 files.
- After the ninth refresh (head `44048d5f`, merge of main `fbb97b62`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41; `remote-v41`
is not tagged yet). `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473 -- bun run
check fast` all ok, unit 10511 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 654 files;
`server/release-notes.test.ts` and `src/lib/updateNotes.test.ts` 52
pass.
- After the tenth refresh (head `1cfcfab7`, merge of main `afdfb1e0`):
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base origin/main`
both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41; both PRs are
client-only). `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473j -- bun run check
fast` all ok, unit 10511 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 654 files;
`server/release-notes.test.ts` and `src/lib/updateNotes.test.ts` 52
pass.
- After the eleventh refresh (head `13fa0181`, merge of main
`2b620462`): `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.21` and `--base
origin/main` both "Release 0.4.22: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and
release metadata are in order." (`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` stays 41;
`remote-v41` is not tagged). `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473k --
bun run check fast` all ok, unit 10551 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 656
files; `server/release-notes.test.ts` and `src/lib/updateNotes.test.ts`
52 pass.
- After the twelfth refresh (head `3ae2133e`, merge of main `64ae5e72`):
both release guards "in order" (`--base v0.4.21` and `--base
origin/main`); `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473l -- bun run check
fast` all ok, unit 10553 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 656 files;
release-notes tests 52 pass.
- After the thirteenth refresh (head `aebaabbf`, merge of main
`99a6671f`): both release guards "in order" (`--base v0.4.21` and
`--base origin/main`); `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 dori heavy rel2473m -- bun
run check fast` all ok, unit 10553 pass, 0 fail, 41 skip in 656 files;
release-notes tests 52 pass.
- Not run: `bun run check full` (integration and browser), left to CI;
no hands-on test of main, which is the owner's.
This is a release-metadata PR: it changes no code path. Per the release
steps, merge it after CI and the owner's go, then push `remote-v41`,
wait for its bundles, and run Release with `0.4.22`.

Closes #2019.
Change
A tab herdr still names by its number ("Tab 2") shows a few words of the first message its agent was given: about 24 columns, where a wide character counts as two, cut at a word's end with
…. The tab's hover stays the pane's title. Tabs of the same agent can be told apart without opening each one.tab_labels, keyed<paneStorageId>|<terminal_id>. herdr reuses pane ids after a restart but never a terminal id, so a new pane never shows an old pane's words. On the server they live in their owntab-labels.json, likemuted-panes.json, so an older release that rewritespreferences.jsonerases nothing. herdr's tab label, its TUI and the workspace name are untouched.PUT /api/preferences. A watching device shows the labels and learns none.tab-labels.jsonthat can't be read or written is logged, and the labels are left out of that save. Labels never count against the 64 KB size of a settings, pins or mutes save.cursor === null), for every transcript-backed agent;Design follows the Codex app, which titles a thread from its first prompt, rather than asking the model for a title (a model call and a wait). DESIGN.md has the entry.
Contract
GET/PUT /api/preferences:tab_labels: { "<paneStorageId>|<terminal_id>": label }. It is absent while none is kept, so an old document reads exactly as before. There are at most 64 labels (the oldest leave first), and each is one line of at most 64 units.tab_labels(a key already held keeps its label) and drops keys withtab_labels_removed. The server merges both per key, so two browsers saving at once lose neither's labels.autoTabNamesis false the server keeps none.Validation
