Mermaid fences showed up as plain code everywhere we render markdown. They now render as diagrams in the chat timeline, markdown file previews, and PR descriptions and comments. All of those surfaces share ChatMarkdown, so the change lives in one code block renderer.

flowchart LR
  A[mermaid fence] --> B{streaming?}
  B -->|yes| C[highlighted source]
  B -->|no| D[lazy-load mermaid]
  D --> E[render + DOMPurify]
  E --> F[diagram inline]
  F -->|click| G[zoomable image dialog]
  F -->|code toggle| C
Loading
  • Mermaid loads with a dynamic import on the first diagram, so other chats pay nothing. Results are cached per source and theme. Pending renders are never evicted, so Suspense retries get the same promise. Settled entries are trimmed to 64. If mermaid or one of its diagram chunks fails to load, the error shows a Retry button.
  • Streaming fences stay as code until the message settles. Parse errors show mermaid's message above the source.
  • PR descriptions are untrusted, so renders use securityLevel: "strict" and lock htmlLabels off against %%{init}%% overrides. A DOMPurify pass then removes links, images, scripts, and event handlers, and drops CSS url() values that aren't local # references. Malicious labels render as text. Mermaid features that reference remote images (img: shapes, sequence actor icons) can still fetch while mermaid lays out the diagram. That matches plain ![](url) images, which PR bodies already load.
  • Diagrams sit directly in the message with no frame. Like tables, a row below holds the code toggle and copy, which copies the source. Toggling to code shows the normal code block. Clicking the diagram opens it in the existing zoomable image dialog through a blob URL, which the desktop connect-src policy allows for save and copy. Only one blob URL is kept at a time.
  • Diagrams follow the light and dark theme.
  • Adds mermaid 11.17.2 and dompurify. That version is old enough to pass the release-age policy. License overrides cover three transitive deps that ship without a declared license file (fastdom, strictdom, khroma).

Not covered: mobile renders markdown natively and would need a WebView, so that is left as a follow-up.

Evidence

Before, same thread on main:

before: mermaid fences render as plain code in the chat timeline

After, from a real Codex turn:

after: flowchart and sequence diagram rendered inline in the chat timeline, with code and copy icons below

after: flowchart toggled back to its code block

This PR's own description in the app's pull request panel, dark and light:

PR description flowchart rendered inline in the pull request panel, dark theme

PR description flowchart rendered inline in the pull request panel, light theme

The shots below were taken before diagrams moved out of the code block frame. Rendering, the file preview, and expand are unchanged.

light theme: diagram follows the app theme, with the flowchart toggled to code

markdown file preview renders a stateDiagram

expanded sequence diagram in the zoomable dialog

Toggling code and diagram, then expanding and closing:

https://uploads-production-47e4.up.railway.app/files/542ad7da-60ac-4ffa-a2f8-f249c7084371/77a881c0-d3e9-4895-8b15-aea2e5cda827-ec79f42f-000f-49a7-b6f2-168e0affec76-mp4.mp4

Verification: an htmlLabels directive, an <img onerror> label, and a javascript: click produced no dialog, no remote request, and no <img>. Web typecheck passes, lint on the changed files is clean, and the third-party license and incremental markdown tests pass.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a substantial Mermaid rendering capability and changes completed Mermaid fences from source code to diagrams by default. It also introduces asynchronous SVG rendering, sanitization, media expansion, and a sizeable dependency graph, warranting human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The web app renders Mermaid code fences in chat as diagrams after streaming ends. Users can switch to highlighted source. The renderer sanitizes SVG output and can create standalone image URLs for expanded diagrams.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab37a

Untrusted diagrams can contact an external image host when rendered, exposing a viewer’s network address and request timing. Resolve or explicitly accept that behavior before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab37a

Strict rendering settings and SVG sanitization provide meaningful protection, and Mermaid fences do not gain terminal-execution controls. However, unfinished rendering work has no aggregate bound or cancellation when a view closes, allowing untrusted content to consume shared rendering capacity. Network behavior during diagram layout and desktop image handling remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Untrusted diagrams can enqueue uncapped work in a module-wide rendering queue. Pending source/theme entries survive view unmount, retaining their inputs and potentially delaying unrelated diagrams sharing the same renderer. The settled-cache limit does not provide admission control or cancellation for outstanding jobs.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated containment concern affects diagram rendering within a web application instance: distinct inputs share one queue and cache, so one workload can delay other diagram views. The inspected Mermaid route does not receive the shell-command callback, and no server-side or cross-tenant privilege gain was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A content author supplying many distinct Mermaid fences can cause separate queued jobs once rendering is enabled. Their promises and inputs remain retained while pending, including after the originating view disappears. This supports a client-side resource-containment concern, not a demonstrated application-wide denial of service.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The SVG insertion boundary has layered controls: strict Mermaid settings, disabled HTML labels, DOMPurify, forbidden navigation and resource attributes, forbidden script and image tags, and filtering of nonlocal CSS url() values. Blob expansion receives the same sanitized output rather than raw Mermaid source.
  • inferred — Output sanitization does not govern side effects occurring during Mermaid layout because it runs after mermaid.render completes. The PR acknowledges layout-time remote-image requests and compares them with already-supported markdown images. Effective network policy, credentials, and caller-specific exposure were not verified, so this remains a boundary limitation rather than a confirmed additional vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Serialization protects this renderer's mutable Mermaid configuration from concurrent jobs. Promise reuse and streaming suppression avoid redundant renders, but pending-job retention has no lifecycle cancellation. Expanded image URLs are module-owned and replaced by revoking the previous URL; external preview-consumer lifetime was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Introduce bounded admission and lifecycle ownership for outstanding diagram jobs while preserving stable promises for active Suspense consumers. Consider isolated rendering with an enforceable execution budget if hostile diagram complexity must be contained.

Two upstream commits. Upstream pingdotgg#15067 renders mermaid code blocks as
diagrams, which overlaps the fork's mermaid renderer (from closed pingdotgg#4989).
Kevin chose upstream's, so the fork's is deleted in this merge: its
component and test, its ChatMarkdown wiring, its chat-markdown-mermaid
styles, its duplicate license notices and its README line. ChatMarkdown.tsx
and third-party-licenses.config.json now match upstream exactly. The
mermaid dependency takes upstream's ^11.17.2 and upstream's lock.

Conflict notes:
- Mermaid: upstream pingdotgg#15067 renders mermaid natively; drop the superseded
  take(pingdotgg#11038) block, its renderer and tests.
- Usage: keep Cursor export, OpenCode SQLite and Grok sources; adopt
  upstream's concurrent transcript reads, cache race guard, retention window
  and model aliases. Grok uses upstream's fileName filter.
- Settings: keep providerRuntimeModeDefaults alongside usageModelAliases.
- ChatView: environment retarget (incl. Scratch projects) still applies the
  per-provider runtime mode default.
- Command palette: upstream virtualized results, wrapped with the clone SSH
  password dialog.

Upstream's Mermaid rendering (pingdotgg#15067) adds vendor chunks the release
bundle gate flags: layout-base and cytoscape-cose-bilkent read
undeclared names on rarely run paths, the C4 parser's lexer has a
no-op `c;`, and d3 falls back to Safari's WebKitCSSMatrix. None is a
missing import, which the gate exists to catch. Skip those three
chunks and declare the Safari global, so nightly preflight passes.

* feat(web): render mermaid code blocks as diagrams (pingdotgg#15067)

Co-authored-by: maria-rcks <254055478+maria-rcks@users.noreply.github.com>

* feat(web): opt-in LaTeX math rendering in chat

Typeset $…$, $$…$$, \(…\) and \[…\] in chat and Markdown previews behind
Settings → Appearance → Render math (off by default). Math is parsed by a
micromark construct, so code, links, escapes and source offsets keep their
CommonMark meaning; KaTeX loads lazily only when a formula renders.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(web): unclosed display math stays text while streaming

A `$$` or `\[` block needs its closing line before it typesets, so a
formula arriving token by token no longer flips between KaTeX output and
source on every prefix.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(web): keep math labels in mermaid diagrams

* test(web): use sequence diagrams for math labels

* fix(web): preserve math color in expanded diagrams

* fix(web): render completed Mermaid blocks while streaming

* fix(web): keep indented Mermaid fence markers in source

* test(web): verify text after streaming Mermaid blocks

* fix(web): preserve Mermaid source when copying selected text

* fix(web): exclude Mermaid source from context record copying

* feat(web): render math by default in this fork

Upstream keeps math opt-in. This fork is for a user who wants it on, so
flip the client-setting default; Settings → Appearance can still turn it off.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(web): a code span after an unmatched dollar stays code

"It costs $5 and $10, and `$HOME`" turned "$5 … `$" into a broken formula
and swallowed the code span, because inline math scanned straight through the
backtick to the `$` inside it. A formula now gives up at a backtick, so the
code span wins as CommonMark precedence says it should.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(pull-requests): PR detail reads no longer drain the GitHub quota (pingdotgg#16280)

Takes over pingdotgg#13841. A PR query refreshes on the server's refresh signal only while something reads it, and the server shares detail, activity, and preview for 60 seconds, or 10 minutes once merged.

* fix(server): Claude limits load again for users with large transcript histories (pingdotgg#16358)

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes
against the schemas the client reads, and the package is small enough for
the 4 CPU / 8 GiB runner.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode the V2 projection's node rows

Regenerated from soaplabs/moatless#1071 at ed50318e, which backs every
rootNodeId and nodeId with a node row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(fork): narrow the V2 gap to what moatless#1071 still refuses
