When you expand a command row, the command shows as one block of gray monospace text. Long chained commands are hard to read, and code inside a command, like the Python in a python3 - <<'PY' heredoc or the script in Codex's /bin/zsh -lc "…" wrapper, reads as one undifferentiated string.

Fix

  • The command is highlighted with the Shiki highlighter the chat already uses for code blocks. Commands run by pwsh or powershell, or written in PowerShell (a statement starting with a capitalized cmdlet such as Get-Content, $env:, a $name = value assignment, or the & call operator), use the PowerShell grammar. Everything else uses the shell grammar.
  • Scripts inside a command get their own grammar (see Nested scripts). The expanded block shows the command exactly as it ran, wrapper included; the row header still shows the unwrapped script.
  • Words wrap as whole units, so --exclude or node_modules no longer breaks at a hyphen. A word longer than the line can still break anywhere.
  • Control characters such as ESC show as visible symbols (␛) instead of invisible gaps, in both the row header and the expanded block (commandDisplayText does it, so every place that shows a command agrees).
  • A command that is only whitespace no longer gives the row a blank label.

Since #15506 the expanded tool body shows the call above its muted result, without a card. This PR keeps that layout and only swaps the plain command line for the highlighted one.

The token renderer moved out of the SnapShot accessibility viewer into HighlightedTokens, so both use the same code.

Cost: highlighting happens only when a row is expanded, since collapsed rows never mount the inspector. While the grammar loads, the plain-text fallback uses the same word spans, so nothing reflows when the colors arrive. There is no animation. Measured on a real thread history, tokenizing a command averaged under 1 ms (p95 about 2 ms), including commands tens of thousands of characters long, and expanding and scrolling a long Codex thread showed the same frame timing before and after.

Nested scripts

Each script inside a command is colored with its own grammar, painted over the surrounding command:

Script Language
bash -c, zsh -lc and other shell -c scripts, bash <<EOF shell, which can nest the rest
python3 -c, py -3 -c, node -e/--eval, bun -e, deno eval, ruby -e, perl -e, osascript -e, pwsh -Command the interpreter's
sqlite3 app.db "…", duckdb, psql -c, mysql -e SQL
A heredoc or <<< here-string an interpreter reads as its script (python3 - <<'PY') the interpreter's
A heredoc cat > src/app.ts or tee config.json writes the file's, via getFiletypeFromFileName
A heredoc whose delimiter names a language (<<'SQL', <<YAML) that language

Scripts nest, so the Python heredoc inside Codex's /bin/zsh -lc "…" wrapper is colored as Python, and so is a node -e inside $(…). Each character of a script maps back to the characters that spell it, so an escaped \" inside -lc "…" takes the color of the quote it stands for. env, sudo, nice and similar prefixes are skipped to find the program, and an interpreter named by a Windows path (C:\Python312\python.exe) is recognized. An interpreter given a script file (python3 build.py <<EOF) or a module (python3 -m json.tool) reads its heredoc as data, so that heredoc is not colored as code.

Commands are parsed with unbash (zero dependencies, about 21 KB gzipped; knip already pulls in an older version). It loads with the first expanded command, not with the timeline. A command that does not parse cleanly gets no nested coloring and is shown as before, since where a broken quote ends cannot be trusted. A script whose grammar is unavailable keeps the colors around it.

Nesting reads shell syntax only. A command written in PowerShell is colored as PowerShell as a whole; scripts inside it (a here-string piped into python, Set-Content contents, & 'C:\…\python.exe' -c, cmd /c "…") are not colored separately yet. That needs a PowerShell reader, and there is no small browser-ready parser for it, so it is left for a follow-up.

Providers

The decision is in the shared client code, so it applies to every provider:

Provider What the adapter sends Shown
Codex /bin/bash -lc '…' / /bin/zsh -lc "…" the unwrapped script in the header; the full command, with the script highlighted inside it, when expanded
Claude (Bash tool) the script as is
Cursor, Pi, Grok and other ACP agents, OpenCode the script as is
Windows (pwsh / powershell, or raw PowerShell) the full command line as is, highlighted as PowerShell

Codex commands whose quoting Codex's redaction broke

Codex replaces secrets in command text before sending it (codex-rs/secrets/src/sanitizer.rs). Its secret-assignment pattern, (token|secret|…)\s*[:=]\s*["']?[^\s"']{8,}, can swallow the backslash of an escaped quote inside -lc "…". For example, token=config[\"apiToken\"] becomes token=[REDACTED_SECRET]"apiToken\"]. The leftover bare " ends the argument early, so the string is no longer valid shell and the original can't be recovered. Unwrapping it would mean guessing where the script ends and how to unescape the rest, and a wrong guess would show a command that never ran. So these rows keep the text exactly as Codex sent it: the header does not unwrap it, and the expanded block colors it as plain shell with nothing nested. In a real thread history this affected only a handful of commands; redacted commands whose quoting survives unwrap normally. Both cases are tested.

The new tests use commands taken from the recorded replay transcripts in testkit/fixtures (turn_interrupt_mid_tool ran the same script on Claude, Codex, Cursor and Pi). They check that each provider ends up showing the script it ran, and that Codex's recorded /bin/bash -lc "node -e \"…\"" finds the shell script and the JavaScript inside it.

Clients

  • Web and desktop: changed, since desktop wraps web.
  • Mobile: its row label uses the same commandDisplayText, so it also shows ␛ instead of invisible gaps. Nothing else changes: its expanded row shows a JSON debug view of the whole item rather than the command, which always has content. The language helper is in client-runtime, so mobile can use it if it adds a command view later.

Screenshots

Before this PR, each of these commands shows as plain foreground text in the same place. All are real turns in a fresh T3 home with a made-up acme-site project.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The PR introduces a substantial syntax-highlighting and embedded-script parsing capability that changes existing command and timeline rendering paths. It also adds a line-level lint suppression, so the change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add command display formatting and syntax-language selection, embedded-script extraction, and shared syntax-token rendering. The web app uses these components for command execution input and JSON accessibility content. Command execution expandability and blank command-label handling also change.

Changes

Command and code display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command formatting and language selection
packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/commandLabel.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/commandLabel.test.ts
Command display text converts selected control characters to visible symbols and selects PowerShell or shell-script highlighting. Tests cover provider commands, redaction, control characters, and language selection.
Embedded-script extraction
apps/web/src/lib/embeddedScripts.ts, apps/web/src/lib/embeddedScripts.test.ts, apps/web/package.json
embeddedScripts parses shell commands to identify embedded scripts, their languages, and source spans. Tests cover interpreter forms, wrappers, heredocs, source mapping, and inputs that produce no scripts. The web app adds unbash.
Shared syntax-token rendering
apps/web/src/components/chat/HighlightedTokens.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/HighlightedTokens.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/SnapShotAttachmentDetails.tsx
HighlightedTokens renders syntax tokens, overlays embedded-script styling, preserves line endings, and groups token pieces into words. Snapshot JSON accessibility content now uses this component.
Command execution display and expansion
apps/web/src/components/chat/ShellCommandBlock.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/V2ItemInspector.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.ts
ShellCommandBlock renders formatted commands with word wrapping and syntax highlighting, with plain-text fallbacks. V2ItemInspector uses it for command input and provides a details check. MessagesTimeline uses that check for expandability and skips blank command labels.

Test CRLF preservation through HighlightedTokens rendering.

The keyedLines test would fail if that helper stopped restoring CRLF. It does not render HighlightedTokens, so it would not catch the component failing to append the restored ending. A component-level test would cover this text-preservation contract on the production render path.

(agent reply) @coderabbitai on the nitpick asking for a component-level CRLF test of HighlightedTokens: skipping it. AGENTS.md asks us not to render components to static markup to assert output or wiring, and the component only appends the ending that keyedLines returns. The logic that can actually go wrong (which ending belongs to which line, and key offsets) is covered directly by the keyedLines tests.

@scratchyone Agreed. I withdraw the component-level CRLF test request.

HighlightedTokens appends ending without transformation. The keyedLines tests cover LF, CRLF, mixed endings, trailing newlines, lone carriage returns, and unique keys for empty lines. That is sufficient for this change and follows the testing guidance in AGENTS.md.

Thanks for the guidance.

Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, AGENTS.md requires tests of meaningful logic or observable behavior and rejects static-markup assertions of props or attributes, callback-wiring tests, and tests that mirror the implementation. For apps/web/src/components/chat/HighlightedTokens.tsx, direct keyedLines tests cover line-ending reconstruction and unique empty-line keys; do not request a component-level test solely to confirm that HighlightedTokens appends the returned ending unchanged.

(agent reply) Added nested highlighting in ec4f1c1, following two suggestions from Discord:

  • Keep the wrapper: the expanded block now shows the command exactly as it ran, /bin/zsh -lc "…" included, and the script inside the quotes is highlighted as its own shell script. The row header still shows the unwrapped script.
  • Highlight the code inside: scripts inside a command get their own grammar. That covers a heredoc an interpreter reads (python3 - <<'PY'), inline scripts (python3 -c, node -e, sqlite3 db "…", psql -c and others), a heredoc cat > file.ts or tee writes (language from the file name), and delimiters that name a language (<<'SQL'). Scripts nest, so the Python inside Codex's -lc wrapper is colored as Python, and escaped quotes map back to the characters that spell them.

Commands are parsed with unbash, a zero-dependency bash parser of about 21 KB gzipped that is loaded with the first expanded command. A command that doesn't parse cleanly, like the Codex commands whose redaction broke their quoting, gets plain shell coloring as before. The PR description has a new "Nested scripts" section and updated screenshots:

Codex Python heredoc inside -lc Claude Python heredoc

(agent reply) Added Windows support from Discord feedback in 4626ccf:

  • Raw PowerShell is colored as PowerShell. Windows agents also run PowerShell without a pwsh wrapper, and those commands used the shell grammar. A command now uses the PowerShell grammar when a statement starts with a capitalized cmdlet (Get-Content, Select-String, …), $env:, a $name = value assignment, or the & call operator. Capitalization keeps lowercase Linux tools like update-alternatives on the shell grammar. The cases come from the PowerShell commands already in commandLabel.test.ts.
  • py -3 -c '…' (the Windows Python launcher) and interpreters named by a Windows path (C:\Python312\python.exe -c '…', quoted or not) now get nested Python highlighting.

Not included: scripts inside PowerShell, such as a here-string piped into python, Set-Content/Out-File contents, & 'C:\…\python.exe' -c, and cmd /c "…". Those need a PowerShell reader. tree-sitter-powershell is about 12 MB and the other npm options run real PowerShell, so there is no small browser-ready parser. A hand-written one deserves its own PR rather than growing this one.

An expanded command row showed the raw command as uniform gray text. For
Codex this was the `/bin/zsh -lc "…"` wrapper even though the row header
already showed the unwrapped script.

The expanded block now shows the same unwrapped script as the header,
colored with the Shiki highlighter the chat already uses (PowerShell
grammar when pwsh or powershell runs it). Shell words wrap as units, so
`--exclude` and paths no longer split at hyphens. Control characters such
as ESC show as visible symbols wherever a command is displayed, header
included. The token renderer is shared with the SnapShot accessibility
viewer. A whitespace-only command no longer gives the row a blank label or
expands into an empty panel.

A Codex wrapper whose quoting Codex's secret redaction broke stays as
sent, since where its script ends can no longer be known.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Shiki drops line endings from its tokens and the renderer put back a
plain newline, so a CRLF script copied from the highlighted block no
longer matched the original text. Each line now gets back the ending
the source had after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The expanded block showed Codex rows without their `/bin/zsh -lc "…"`
wrapper, and code inside a command, like the Python in a `python3 - <<'PY'`
heredoc, was colored as one shell string.

The block now shows the command exactly as it ran, and colors each script
inside it with its own grammar: a `bash -c` script as shell, `python3 -c`,
`node -e`, `sqlite3 db "…"` and similar arguments in their language, a
heredoc in the language of the interpreter reading it, the file `cat` or
`tee` writes, or a delimiter like `<<'SQL'`. Scripts nest, so a Python
heredoc inside a Codex wrapper is colored as Python. Escapes map back to
the characters that spell them.

Commands are parsed with unbash, loaded with the first expanded command.
A command that does not parse cleanly, such as one Codex's secret
redaction broke, keeps plain shell coloring.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`node --eval=…` and `psql --command=…` carry the script after `=` in the
same word, which went unnoticed. `env -- FOO=1 python3 -c …` stopped
looking for the program at the `--`. And `psql -f file` or `--file=file`
still colored a following heredoc as SQL, although psql runs the file.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`psql -c 'a' -c 'b'` and `sqlite3 app.db "a" "b"` run each statement in
order, but only the first was highlighted as SQL.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`cat 2>log.ts <<'EOF'` colored the heredoc as TypeScript, although only
stderr goes to that file.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`deno eval --config deno.json '…'` highlighted the config path as the
script, and `node -C development -e '…'` missed the script entirely.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`-c` and `-f` mean different things to psql and mysql: for mysql they are
--comments and --force. `mysql -c -e 'select 1'` took `-e` as the
script, and `mysql -f <<EOF` dropped its SQL heredoc.

`psql -f schema.sql -c 'select 1'` stopped reading at -f, although psql
runs both. `deno eval --env-file '…'` took the script as the env file,
although a bare --env-file takes no value.

Windows agents also run PowerShell directly, without a pwsh wrapper, and
those commands were colored with the shell grammar. A command now uses the
PowerShell grammar when a statement starts with a capitalized Verb-Noun
cmdlet (`Get-Content`), `$env:`, a `$name = value` assignment, or the `&`
call operator, none of which parse as POSIX shell.

Nested highlighting also finds Python run through the Windows `py`
launcher (`py -3 -c '…'`) and interpreters named by a Windows path
(`C:\Python312\python.exe -c '…'`).

`Install-Module Pester` and other cmdlets with verbs outside the short
list were colored with the shell grammar. Detection now uses the full
approved verb list from `Get-Verb`, still matching capitalized cmdlets
only so lowercase Linux tools like `install-info` stay shell.

Tool calls now show the call above a muted result, without cards, so the
highlighted command drops its own border and background and takes the
body's monospace text like the plain command it replaces.

(agent reply) Rebased onto main after #15505 and #15506 changed the tool body. This PR now keeps the new card-free layout and only swaps the plain command line for the highlighted one. Its diff to V2ItemInspector.tsx is one line. #15505 already stops rows with nothing to show from expanding, so I dropped this PR's own version of that. The screenshots in the description are retaken in the new layout.

* fix(server): Claude limits load again for users with large transcript histories (pingdotgg#16358)

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes
against the schemas the client reads, and the package is small enough for
the 4 CPU / 8 GiB runner.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode the V2 projection's node rows

Regenerated from soaplabs/moatless#1071 at ed50318e, which backs every
rootNodeId and nodeId with a node row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(fork): narrow the V2 gap to what moatless#1071 still refuses
