feat(desktop,host-service): auto-resume interrupted agent sessions idempotently - #6572
Conversation
…idate claim A resume candidate is now consumed by an atomic end-reason flip (terminal-exited -> resumed) guarded by the full candidate predicate, so exactly one claimer wins no matter how many panes, windows, or retries race. terminalAgents.resume runs the whole flow host-side: claim, relaunch via the agent's resume args, dispose the dead terminal; concurrent callers for the same terminal coalesce onto one in-flight launch and share its result. A failed launch un-claims so the session stays resumable.
…sume button TerminalAgentResumeBanner becomes TerminalAgentAutoResume: when a pane's terminal died under an agent, the pane now calls terminalAgents.resume automatically and re-points itself at the relaunched session, showing a passive "Resuming..." pill. Only a failed launch surfaces UI (retry + dismiss). The old renderer-side agents.run + killSession orchestration moves into the host mutation.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds host-mediated terminal-agent session resumption. It atomically consumes resumable bindings, launches saved sessions, coalesces concurrent requests, and replaces the desktop resume banner with automatic recovery controls. ChangesTerminal agent resume
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Automatic resumption can relaunch sessions that users intentionally disposed of if late terminal-end events leave them marked as interrupted. Renderer recovery-state and failure-diagnostics concerns also remain open, so merge should wait for these bounded correctness and supportability issues to be addressed or explicitly accepted. …n (review) - reset failed/dismissed when a new candidate session appears in the same terminal (cold-respawned shell hosting a fresh agent that dies again) - ignore a late failure from a superseded attempt - invalidate the candidate query on resumed:false instead of relying on fire-and-forget lifecycle events - normalize Error message/stack for the main.log console mirror
killSession marked bindings terminal-exited — the same reason as a crash — so a session killed on purpose (pane close, CLI kill) became a resume candidate and auto-resume resurrected it at the next pane mount (observed: a teardown-killed agent relaunched itself 2h later on app boot). New sticky "disposed" end reason, stamped before the kill so the SIGHUP death-gasp and pty-exit events cannot upgrade it back into a candidate.

Mark bulk-disposed bindings as "disposed".
disposeSessionsByWorkspaceId and disposeSessionsByWorktreePath must mark each terminal-agent binding before calling disposeSessionAndWait. A late SIGHUP SessionEnd hook can otherwise record "terminal-exited" and make a deliberately disposed session resumable.

Summary
Why / Context
The
TerminalAgentResumeBannermade users click to restore a session that they almost always want back — and the click-driven flow was the only thing preventing duplicate resumes. Making resume automatic requires making it idempotent, since every mount/re-render/second-window becomes a potential trigger. How It Works
TerminalAgentEndReasonvalue"resumed"marks a consumed candidate.claimResumeCandidateBindingflipsterminal-exited → resumedin one atomic UPDATE guarded by the full candidate predicate (shared withfindResumeCandidateBindingviaresumeCandidatePredicate), so exactly one claimer gets the binding back.unclaimResumeCandidateBindingrolls back a claim whose relaunch failed.terminalAgents.resumemutation runs the whole flow host-side: claim → relaunch via the agent's resume args (runAgentInWorkspacewith the savedagentSessionId) → dispose the dead terminal. Concurrent callers for the same terminal coalesce onto one in-flight promise (host-service is one process per host, so this covers multiple desktop windows) and share the same result.markTerminalAgentBindingEndedno-ops on already-ended rows, so late terminal-death marks can't resurrect a consumed candidate.TerminalAgentResumeBanner→TerminalAgentAutoResume. Fires once per candidate session (ref-guarded), re-points the pane on success, and only surfaces UI on failure (retry + dismiss). The old renderer-sideagents.run+killSessionorchestration is deleted. The v1→v2 migration's seeded candidates flow through the same path, so migrated panes auto-resume too.resumeTerminalAgentSession(deps, input)with the launch/dispose injected (production wrapper passes the real ones) so the orchestration is testable without spawning terminals.Manual QA Checklist
Core scenario verified live (2026-08-17) in the dev desktop via CDP: staged a real claude session with a codeword in context, SIGKILLed its zsh+claude, and the pane re-pointed to a relaunched
claude --resume <sessionId>in ~1s with zero clicks; asking the resumed session for the codeword returned it correctly. Ground truth in host.db: old binding flippedendReason=resumed, new binding attached with the sameagent_session_id. Screen recording attached in the PR conversation.resumeHTTP calls returned the identical new terminalId in 7ms — one launch, shared result; a repeat call after completion returned{resumed: false}claude --resumeprocesses, no duplicates)terminal-exitedSessionEnd) → no auto-resume (covered by unit tests on the candidate predicate)Edge found live and fixed in this PR
Testing surfaced a real resurrection bug:
killSessionmarked bindingsterminal-exited— indistinguishable from a crash — so a deliberately killed session became a resume candidate, and a pane still pointed at it auto-relaunched the agent at the next app boot (observed: a teardown-killed agent came back 2 hours later). Fixed with a sticky"disposed"end reason stamped before the kill; verified live that killSession'd bindings now recorddisposedand never resume, with a unit test asserting neither the SIGHUP death-gasp nor the pty-exit event can upgrade it back.Testing

TerminalAgentAutoResume(thin glue over the mutation; the orchestration it triggers is covered host-side).Summary by cubic
Auto-resumes interrupted terminal-agent sessions and prevents resurrecting deliberately killed sessions. Previously panes showed a “Resume” button and some kills became resume candidates; now panes auto-repoint with a passive “Resuming…” pill, and deliberate kills are marked non-resumable.
packages/host-service): addsterminalAgents.resumeto claim a candidate atomically (terminal-exited → resumed), relaunch with saved resume args, coalesce concurrent callers across windows, dispose the dead terminal, and unclaim on failure so retries work.
