Replaces the per-trigger CRUD approach in #6531 (now draft). Triggers are edited as part of the automation, so the surface is a replace-the-set on automation.create/update.

No migration.

Shared validation

Lives in @superset/shared/automation-triggers, imported by both the editor and the API, so the form blocks Save on exactly what the server would reject rather than reimplementing the rules.

It deliberately has two levels:

  • draftTriggerSchema accepts a half-configured trigger. The editor has to be able to hold "Draft opened in [Select Repos]" with nothing chosen yet — if the schema refused to represent that, the form couldn't hold its own in-progress state.
  • describeTriggerProblems reports what blocks Save, per trigger and per field, so a message can sit next to the control it belongs to. summarizeTriggerProblems produces the banner.

The messages match the mockups: "Some triggers need additional configuration" and "Specify at least one repository."

It also catches more than one schedule per automation, which the partial unique index enforces in the database — better as a message next to the row than a constraint violation at save time.

Matched by id, not cleared and reinserted

A trigger row carries state the editor never sees: a webhook's signing key, and a schedule's next run. Clearing and reinserting would silently roll a key someone had already configured upstream, and reschedule an automation that was only renamed.

So rows present in the set are updated in place, rows absent are deleted, and the next run is only recomputed when the recurrence actually changed.

GitHub configs are a union on the event

The filters differ per event — "Any Comment by [Anyone] on a PR by [Anyone] in [Repos]" carries two independent actor scopes where "Draft opened" carries one. A single flat config with one actor can't express that, so the config discriminates on event.

includeForks stays the literal false: fork payloads carry attacker-controlled content into a checkout the agent runs in, so enabling it should be a schema change with a threat model attached.

Verified against a real database

The actual saveTriggerSet executed against Postgres 16, not reasoned about:

Initial save creates the set 2 triggers
Webhook signing key survives an unrelated save preserved
Schedule not rescheduled by an unrelated save preserved
Row ids stable across saves stable
Trigger dropped from the set is deleted deleted
Recurrence change does reschedule reschedules
Unconfigured GitHub trigger rejected server-side rejected

Plus the shared validation itself: a half-configured trigger parses but reports a problem; a comment event requires both actors; includeForks: true, unknown events, and an unknown kind are all rejected.

Compatibility

Top-level rrule still works and folds into a single schedule trigger, so the CLI, SDK, MCP and desktop keep working until they move to sending a set. Same expand-contract shape as the column migration.

Typecheck, lint and the full suite pass.

Next

The editor UI, then webhook ingestion so event triggers actually fire.

Summary by cubic

Saves automation triggers as a replace-the-set on create/update and makes event-only automations first‑class. Previously list/get assumed every automation had a schedule; now schedule is optional and responses reflect what was actually saved.

  • API: createAutomation/updateAutomation accept optional triggers: DraftTrigger[] (max 25). Create requires either triggers or rrule; if rrule is provided, timezone is required. If triggers are absent, the legacy top‑level rrule folds into a single schedule trigger. Invalid sets return 400 with per‑field problems.
  • Schedule handling: list/get/getAutomationForUser use a left join; schedule fields in responses are nullable. Create/update now build schedule fields from saved triggers, not the input.
  • Validation (@superset/shared/automation-triggers): shared draft+save checks; enforces at most one schedule; GitHub config discriminates on event; Slack reaction_added requires an emoji; actor is anyone | me | specific people.
  • Persistence: new saveTriggerSet matches rows by id, deletes dropped rows, and only recomputes nextRunAt when the schedule’s recurrence changes. Webhook signing keys and existing nextRunAt are preserved across unrelated edits.
  • Packages: packages/shared exports ./automation-triggers. No migration.

Written for commit bb28434. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for configuring up to 25 automation triggers, including schedules and event-driven integrations.
    • Automation creation and updates now save, update, and remove trigger configurations reliably.
    • Event-only automations can be created without a schedule.
    • Existing schedule configurations remain supported for compatibility.
    • Added validation for trigger requirements and provider-specific settings, with clear summaries of configuration issues.

Triggers are edited as part of the automation, not one row at a time, so
the surface is a replace-the-set on automation.create/update rather than
per-trigger CRUD.

Validation lives in @superset/shared so the editor runs exactly the checks
the API enforces, and it distinguishes two levels: a draft may be
half-configured, so the form can hold "Draft opened in [Select Repos]"
with nothing chosen, while describeTriggerProblems reports what blocks
Save, per trigger and per field.

The set is matched by id rather than cleared and reinserted: a trigger row
carries a webhook's signing key and a schedule's next run, neither of
which the editor sees, and recreating would roll the key and reschedule an
automation that was only renamed.

GitHub configs are a union on the event, since the filters differ — a
comment has both a comment author and a PR author, a push has neither.

Top-level rrule still works and folds into a single schedule trigger, so
the CLI, SDK, MCP and desktop keep working until they move over.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared automation-trigger schemas and validation, accepts trigger sets in automation create and update inputs, persists trigger rows, supports event-only automations, and preserves legacy RRule synchronization when trigger sets are not provided.

Changes

Automation trigger sets

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared trigger contracts and validation
packages/shared/package.json, packages/shared/src/automation-triggers.ts
The shared package exports provider-specific trigger schemas, draft types, empty-selection helpers, and indexed validation messages.
Trigger input and persistence
packages/trpc/src/router/automation/schema.ts, packages/trpc/src/router/automation/triggerSet.ts
Create and update schemas accept up to 25 triggers. saveTriggerSet validates drafts, removes deleted rows, updates retained rows, and inserts new rows with schedule timestamps.
Automation create, update, and lookup routing
packages/trpc/src/router/automation/automation.ts, packages/trpc/src/router/automation/helpers.ts
Create and update operations persist supplied trigger sets. Event-only automations remain discoverable through left joins. Inputs without triggers continue to synchronize the legacy schedule trigger.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to bb284

Automation updates can create invalid schedule state, leave trigger routing and scheduling inconsistent after type changes, and report a next run that differs from what is stored. These correctness issues can affect saved automations and runtime dispatch, so the PR is not merge-ready until they are fixed or explicitly accepted.

Use a discriminated union and keep GitHub event lists exhaustive.

z.discriminatedUnion("event", [...]) supports these z.enum discriminators and provides targeted validation errors. The two event sets are disjoint.

Add a type-level assertion between GithubTriggerEvent and both schema event types. Rename githubPullRequestEvent because it also handles push, check_suite.failed, and issue.opened.

Align DraftTrigger["config"] with TriggerConfig before removing the cast.

The types do not match. GitHub configs use event and optional subjectAuthor in the shared schema, but TriggerConfig declares events and no subjectAuthor. Define one canonical shape or add an explicit conversion, then use bidirectional compile-time checks.

The header documents a triggerSchema that this file does not export.

Lines 9-12 describe two levels: draftTriggerSchema and triggerSchema. Only draftTriggerSchema exists. Saveability is enforced by describeTriggerProblems, not by a second schema. A reader of this shared module will look for an export that is not there. Update the header to describe the actual pair, or add the missing schema.

Separately, Zod 4 exposes z.uuid() as the standalone UUID format. z.string().uuid() on Line 160 is the legacy form.

Validate schedule recurrence fields before entering the write transaction.

rrule and timezone currently accept arbitrary non-empty strings, so invalid recurrence or timezone values reach runtime calculation and can surface as a 500 instead of a field-level validation error. Add recurrence parsing checks to describeTriggerProblems, validate timezone as an IANA zone, and use the current ISO datetime validator for dtstart.

The update path never writes kind, so a trigger that changes type leaves kind and config inconsistent.

The insert at Line 118 sets kind: config.kind. The update at Lines 104-108 sets only config, enabled, and nextRunAt. A caller can send an existing trigger id with a config of a different kind. draftTriggerSchema accepts that, and existingById matches by id alone. The row then keeps its old kind while storing the new config.

Two consequences follow:

  1. kind is the routing column. syncScheduleTrigger in packages/trpc/src/router/automation/helpers.ts targets the partial unique index with sql\kind = 'schedule'`, and the list/getqueries inautomation.tsjoin on the schedule trigger. A row withkind = 'schedule'` and a GitHub config would be joined and read as a schedule.
  2. recurrenceChanged returns false when next.kind !== "schedule". A schedule row converted to a GitHub trigger therefore keeps previous.nextRunAt. The dispatcher indexes nextRunAt, so that row can fire on a stale timestamp.

Write kind on update, and clear nextRunAt when the kind is no longer schedule.

🐛 Proposed fix
 function recurrenceChanged(
 	next: DraftTrigger["config"],
 	previous: TriggerConfig | null,
 ): boolean {
-	if (next.kind !== "schedule") return false;
+	// A kind change always invalidates the stored next run.
+	if (next.kind !== "schedule") return previous?.kind === "schedule";
 	if (!previous || previous.kind !== "schedule") return true;
 	return (
 		previous.rrule !== next.rrule ||
 		previous.dtstart !== next.dtstart ||
 		previous.timezone !== next.timezone
 	);
 }
 			const [row] = await tx
 				.update(automationTriggers)
-				.set({ config, enabled: trigger.enabled, nextRunAt })
+				.set({ kind: config.kind, config, enabled: trigger.enabled, nextRunAt })
 				.where(eq(automationTriggers.id, previous.id))
 				.returning({ id: automationTriggers.id });

With recurrenceChanged returning true on a kind change, nextRunAtFor returns null for the non-schedule config, so the stale timestamp is cleared.

  pr_review_submitted (approved/changes_requested/commented/any),
  review_thread (resolved/unresolved/any), workflow_run

- comment events carry a free-text body filter with a regex toggle, which
  no version of this schema had
- Slack, Linear and Sentry take one event each, not an array, and their
  event lists are now the real ones
- Slack reactions require an emoji, which is now checked
A trigger set may contain no schedule — an event-driven automation is the
normal case for GitHub or Slack — and three things assumed otherwise:

- list, get and getAutomationForUser inner-joined the schedule trigger, so
  an automation without one vanished from every listing. It did not look
  broken, it looked deleted.
- rrule was still required on create, so an event-only automation could
  not be expressed at all.
- create and update reported the schedule from their input, describing one
  that may never have been written or was just removed.

Schedule fields are now nullable throughout and responses are built from
what was saved.

The inner join was correct when written: every automation had exactly one
schedule, so inner and left were equivalent. The trigger set broke that
assumption and the join was not revisited.

Fixed in bb28434. The Critical finding was correct and is the most important thing in this PR.

An event-only automation was invisible. list, get and getAutomationForUser inner-joined the schedule trigger, so an automation whose triggers are all event-based had nothing to match and was dropped from the result. Create it, hit Save, and it writes correctly to the database — then never appears in the list, and get 404s. Indistinguishable from a failed save.

That join was correct when written: at the time every automation had exactly one schedule trigger, so inner and left were equivalent. The trigger set broke that invariant and I didn't revisit the join. Worse, I'd written the hazard down myself in #6531 as the reason to block deleting a schedule trigger — then built a set-save that deletes any trigger not in the set.

Demonstrated against Postgres 16, with one scheduled and one event-only automation:

inner join left join
Scheduled automation listable yes yes
Event-only automation listable no yes
Dispatcher picks up only the due scheduled one — yes

That third row matters: making automations visible must not make event-only ones start firing on a schedule they don't have.

Also fixed from the same review:

  • rrule was still required on create, so an event-only automation couldn't be expressed at all. Now optional, with a refinement requiring either a trigger set or a schedule, and a timezone whenever there is one.
  • Responses described the input rather than what was written. create and update reported a top-level schedule even when the saved set contained a different one or none. Both now build the schedule half of the response from what was actually saved, with every schedule field nullable.

Not taken: the header comment referencing a triggerSchema export that doesn't exist — corrected. Schedule recurrence validation before the write transaction is worth doing but belongs with the editor work, since the useful version reports per-field problems rather than throwing.

The else branch writes a schedule trigger with null recurrence fields for an event-only automation.

getAutomationForUser now uses a left join (packages/trpc/src/router/automation/helpers.ts Line 187), so existing.rrule, existing.dtstart, and existing.timezone are null for an automation whose triggers are all event-based.

Consider a rename of an event-only automation: the client sends name only, so input.triggers is undefined and this else branch runs. nextRrule resolves to null (Line 473) and syncScheduleTrigger receives rrule: null, dtstart: null, timezone: null. It inserts a schedule trigger row whose config holds nulls, which gives the automation a schedule it never had. If the client also sends dtstart or timezone, parseRrule at Line 481 throws first with an uncaught error.

The response construction at Line 535 already guards on nextRrule && recomputedNextRunAt. Apply the same guard to the write.

 						enabled: row.enabled,
 					});
 				}

Guard the parseRrule call at Lines 481-487 in the same way, so recomputedNextRunAt stays null when there is no recurrence.

setEnabled (Lines 641-673) and setPrompt (Line 614) read the same fields from getAutomationForUser and carry the same assumption. Handle them together.

The reported nextRunAt can differ from the value that was persisted.

withSchedule receives the draft input.triggers, not the rows that saveTriggerSet returns. It then recomputes nextRunAt from new Date().

saveTriggerSet does not always write that value. For an existing trigger whose recurrence did not change, it keeps previous.nextRunAt (see packages/trpc/src/router/automation/triggerSet.ts lines 100-104). A retained past-due nextRunAt is therefore reported as the next future occurrence, so the response contradicts the row the dispatcher reads.

saveTriggerSet already returns the saved rows. Pass those rows to withSchedule and read nextRunAt from the row instead of recomputing.

Then match on savedTriggers and use row.config plus row.nextRunAt inside withSchedule.

The left join makes row.rrule nullable, but safeDescribeRrule only guards against a null row.

safeDescribeRrule (Lines 798-805) checks if (!row) return "". After this join change, row is always present while row.rrule can be null for an event-only automation. describeSchedule(row.rrule) then runs with null. If it throws, the catch returns row.rrule, so scheduleText becomes null at runtime although the declared return type is string.

The same path applies to get at Line 230 and Line 248.

Guard the field, not the row.

Drizzle ORM 0.45.2 leftJoin select object spread nullable inferred type SQL aliased expression source

💡 Result:

In Drizzle ORM, particularly around version 0.45.2, type inference for fields selected from a LEFT JOIN is governed by the join's nullability rules [1][2]. Because a left join can result in no matching rows, Drizzle automatically marks fields from the joined table as nullable [1]. Regarding the specific behaviors you encountered: 1. SQL Aliased Expressions: Drizzle often cannot automatically infer that an sql aliased expression should become nullable after a left join [3]. If you have an expression like sql<string> in a subquery or select, it will remain string even if the table is left-joined [3]. You must explicitly cast it to include null in your type definition, for example: sql<string | null>... [1][3]. 2. Object Spread and Partial Selects: Using the object spread operator (...) with getTableColumns() is a common way to select multiple fields, but it bypasses Drizzle's sophisticated internal logic that manages nullability for nested selects [1][4]. Drizzle's official recommendation for handling many columns without getting a "plethora of nullable fields" is to use the nested select object syntax [1]: await db.select({ mainField: table.field, joinedTable: { field1: joinedTable.field1, field2: joinedTable.field2, } }).from(table).leftJoin(joinedTable,...) When using this nested syntax, Drizzle's type inference automatically makes the entire joined object (joinedTable) nullable ({...} | null) rather than making every individual column within it nullable [1]. 3. Version 0.45.2: This version was primarily a security release addressing potential SQL injection vulnerabilities related to sql.identifier() and sql.as() [5][6]. It did not introduce major breaking changes to the type inference engine for joins [7][6]. If you find that your types are incorrectly inferred as non-nullable, it is often due to using getTableColumns or spread operators instead of explicit nested objects, or relying on sql templates without manual nullability typing [1][3].

Preserve LEFT JOIN nullability for computed schedule fields

Drizzle widens joined Column selections but leaves SQL.Aliased selections unchanged. Therefore, rrule, dtstart, and timezone remain non-nullable, while only nextRunAt becomes nullable. Type the computed aliases as nullable, and use a mapWith decoder that returns Date | null for dtstart.

Both rrule and triggers can be supplied, and the top-level rrule is then discarded silently.

The first refinement accepts a request that carries both shapes. In automation.ts create, the input.triggers branch runs and legacySchedule is never persisted. The caller receives no error and no signal that its rrule was ignored.

If both shapes must not coexist, reject the combination here.

 	})

If a client is expected to send both during migration, document the precedence in the schema comment instead.
