Summary

This PR bundles two features behind a new top-level Usage dashboard tab:

  1. Official quota meters — per-account session/weekly % used with reset times, read from the providers' own quota endpoints (the number the CLI enforces, not a log-file estimate)
  2. Token/cost analytics — cost & token history from the providers' transcript logs, priced at API list rates, with a per-provider chart, model breakdown, and per-project attribution

Both handle multiple accounts: default homes, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR (comma-list), auto-discovered profile dirs (runway's model), per-profile Keychain items, and multiple ~/.codex* homes.

Part 1: host-service usage router

Why

Top user ask from the Twitter thread + Slack feedback: quota-limit % with reset countdowns beats raw token counts, and multi-account users pick the subscription with the most headroom when starting a task. Prior attempts existed (#5798, alchemistchaos/feat/minimal-ai-usage-meter) but placed the data layer in Electron main, which can only ever see the local machine — this router runs per-host.

What / How

  • usage.quota — fetches api.anthropic.com/api/oauth/usage and chatgpt.com/backend-api/wham/usage with the CLIs' own tokens. Tokens are strictly read-only: expired → token_expired status ("run `claude` to refresh"), never refreshed by us — a second client refreshing trips provider token-reuse protection and signs the user's CLI out. 60s promise-cache with rejection eviction.
  • usage.history — walks every profile's projects/ / sessions/ transcripts and prices them at API list rates. Runs as a worker-pool task (workers/tasks/usage.ts): the trees reach multiple GB (~4.6s scan on a heavy user), so parsing must stay off the host-service event loop. Deduped per window via dedupeKey.
  • profiles.ts — multi-account discovery: dot-dirs at ~ + dirs under ~/.config, accepted only when the dir's own .claude.json names an OAuth account (also yields the email with no API call); credentials from the dir's .credentials.json or its Keychain item Claude Code-credentials-<sha256(literal path)[0:8]> probed across path spellings. Codex: ~/.codex* dirs with a token-bearing auth.json, deduped by account email.

Key decisions

Decision Choice Rationale
Quota source Official OAuth endpoints The loudest criticism of T3 Code's usage launch was accuracy; log-derived estimates double-count. We show the number the CLI enforces
Claude dedupe message.id + requestId, keep last occurrence Claude Code writes one line per content block with a growing usage snapshot; first-wins undercounts output ~10% (found during verification)
Codex parsing last_token_usage deltas + consecutive-duplicate suppression Codex re-emits identical token_count events; after suppression, delta sums land within ~1% of Codex's own cumulative counters
Cache-write pricing Per 5m/1h tier from cache_creation Flat 1.25x (what #5798 did) misprices 1h writes, which bill 2x
Placement host-service, not Electron main Remote hosts have their own logins/transcripts; the desktop is a pure consumer

Accuracy verification

Per-model comparison against ccusage v20 for a full day matches token-exact and cent-exact (all fields, all three Claude models). Codex self-check across 136 sessions: within ~1% of Codex's own cumulative counters. Details in the plans doc.

Part 2: desktop Usage tab

What / How

  • New nav entry (gauge icon) in both sidebar variants → /usage route.
  • Quota cards per account: email + plan badge + source dir, Gemini-style meters (label, "N% used", thin bar, "Resets in 5d 13h · Aug 21" caption), amber ≥70% / red ≥90%, distinct expired-token and org-plan states.
  • History dashboard (layout follows the strongest patterns from the Mobbin/T3/ccusage research): API-rate cost headline with the honesty footnote ("* if billed at full API rate"), provider share rows, layered (not stacked) monotone area chart with Cost|Tokens + 7d/30d/90d toggles and crosshair tooltip, five metric tiles (incl. cache savings in dollars), per-model table, per-project bars — the attribution no menu-bar tracker has.
  • Chart palette (#d06a48 Claude / #1596d6 Codex) validated for CVD separation (ΔE ≥ 20), lightness band, and ≥3:1 contrast on both light and dark surfaces.

New components

  • usage/page.tsx + UsageView — route shell, quota cards
  • UsageHistorySection (+ UsageAreaChart, UsageMetricTiles, UsageModelTable, UsageProjectBars) — analytics
  • useHostUsageQuota / useHostUsageHistory — per-host queries via getHostServiceClientByUrl; history has no interval poll (expensive) and keeps previous data across range switches

Manual QA Checklist

Quota

  • Nav entry renders in expanded sidebar and collapsed icon rail, with active state
  • Real Codex account renders weekly windows, reset dates, credits balance
  • Expired Claude token shows the token_expired card with refresh hint
  • Multi-account: synthetic ~/.claude-testprofile (identity + expired credential) discovered and rendered as a second card with its email
  • A live second account with a valid token shows its own quota meters (needs a second real login)

History

  • 30d scan of 5GB / ~1,300 files completes in ~4.6s in the worker pool; UI stays responsive
  • Cost/Tokens toggle drives headline, share rows, and chart together
  • 7d/30d/90d range switch refetches; previous chart holds while loading
  • Synthetic transcript priced exactly ($1.026 hand-computed = $1.03 shown)
  • Verified against ccusage per-model to the cent (see plans doc)
  • Demo film + screenshots captured via CDP

General

  • App launches clean; no renderer console errors on the route
  • Windows/Linux host: Keychain probes correctly no-op (darwin-gated; not exercised on a real machine)

Testing

  • bunx turbo typecheck — host-service + desktop green
  • bun test — usage utils (15 tests) + host-service ratchets (no-main-loop-blocking, no-electron-coupling, worker pool) green
  • Biome clean on all touched paths
  • Live CDP verification against real accounts and real transcript data

Known Limitations

  • Cost is an API-list-rate estimate and labeled as such everywhere; subscription users don't spend this money.
  • Per-account history attribution is only possible per profile-directory — transcripts don't record which account made the call (same limit as every tool in this space).
  • Quota endpoints are undocumented and can change; failures degrade to unavailable cards, never crash the page.
  • History covers Claude + Codex only; other agents' transcripts are follow-ups.

Follow-ups (deferred to keep this reviewable)

  • Compact quota meter in the model/agent dropdown ("start on the account with most headroom") and sidebar-footer ambient meter — mount + policy logic already prototyped on alchemistchaos/feat/minimal-ai-usage-meter
  • Pace projection ("lasts until reset") on quota meters — pure 47-line formula extractable from feat(desktop): add Token Usage screen for AI provider limits, cost & usage #5798
  • Near-limit notifications, tray badge

Risks / Rollout

  • Risk: low — read-only feature, new routes/routers only; no schema or existing-behavior changes. Heaviest operation is sandboxed in the worker pool with a 110s task timeout.
  • Rollback: revert the PR; no persisted state to clean up.

Summary by cubic

Adds a Usage tab with per-account quota meters (official endpoints) and token/cost analytics from local transcripts, so users can see reset times and where usage happens by model and workspace. Also fixes manual quota refresh handling and replaces a forbidden project-name snapshot read with a basename(repoPath) fallback.

  • Host-service usage router: reads Anthropic api/oauth/usage and ChatGPT backend-api/wham/usage with existing CLI tokens (read-only; expired → token_expired), caches for 5 minutes, and discovers multiple accounts via profile dirs, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR (comma-list), macOS Keychain, and ~/.codex*.
  • History: worker task scans transcript logs, prices at API list rates, and returns daily series with provider/model/workspace breakdowns and per-session IDs; joins transcript cwd to workspace worktrees/projects; hardens scans (no symlink traversal, path dedupe, timestamp fallbacks, negative-token clamping) and merges default-slot credentials to avoid phantom expired accounts.
  • Desktop /usage: compact quota cards (reset captions, expired/unavailable states) and a history dashboard with Cost|Tokens and 7/30/90d, a layered per‑provider area chart with day inspection and provider toggles, metric tiles (incl. cache savings), per‑model table, and top workspaces/projects; drilldowns at /usage/workspace/:name, /usage/model/:providerModelKey, and /usage/workspaces with a Workspaces|Projects pivot and filters; clicking a session row copies its session ID.
  • Polling and refresh: quota polls every 5 minutes; manual refresh bypasses the host cache and now catches rejected updates.
  • Adds recharts.

Written for commit fb843e6. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Usage dashboard accessible from the sidebar for Claude and Codex quota information, including usage meters, credits, account status, and reset times.
    • Added usage history with selectable 7-, 30-, and 90-day ranges and cost or token views.
    • Added charts and breakdowns by provider, model, and project, plus token, cache, savings, and estimated cost metrics.
    • Added refresh controls and clear loading, error, and unavailable states.

…ost history

usage.quota reads the official quota endpoints (Anthropic oauth/usage,
ChatGPT wham/usage) with the CLI's own tokens, strictly read-only — an
expired token reports token_expired instead of refreshing, since a second
client refreshing trips provider token-reuse protection and signs the CLI
out. Accounts are discovered runway-style (profiles.ts): default homes,
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR comma-list, auto-scanned profile dirs gated on their
.claude.json naming an OAuth account, per-profile Keychain items
(Claude Code-credentials-<sha256(literal)[0:8]>), and ~/.codex* homes.

usage.history walks every profile's transcripts in the worker pool (multi-GB
trees; scanning must stay off the event loop) and prices them at API list
rates. Parser rules verified token-exact and cent-exact against ccusage
per-model: Claude dedupes on message.id+requestId keeping the LAST
occurrence (usage snapshots grow per content-block line), cache writes are
priced per 5m/1h tier; Codex sums last_token_usage deltas with
consecutive-duplicate suppression, within ~1% of its own cumulative
counters.
New top-level dashboard nav entry (both sidebar variants) routing to
/usage: per-account quota cards with session/weekly meters and reset
captions, then a transcript-history dashboard — API-rate cost headline
with provider share rows, layered (not stacked) per-provider area chart
with Cost|Tokens and 7d/30d/90d toggles, metric tiles including
cache-savings dollars, per-model table, and per-project bars. Chart
palette validated for CVD separation and contrast on both themes.

Cost is always labeled as an API-list-rate estimate, never money spent —
subscription users are the audience and the number is the comparison
point, not a bill.

The Usage feature adds host-side transcript scanning and multi-account quota/history views, but the current head can still recurse on symlinked transcript directories, omit configured profiles, show stale or misleading data during host or error transitions, and produce an unhandled rejection when quota refresh fails; analytics labeling and privacy documentation also need correction, so merge should wait for fixes or explicit acceptance.

Lower the state-file size limit or move the parse off the request thread.

MAX_STATE_FILE_BYTES allows a 50 MB .claude.json. JSON.parse on that size blocks the thread for hundreds of milliseconds. discoverClaudeProfiles runs on the host-service main loop through fetchClaudeAccounts, and the loop can repeat for every candidate directory, so the 1.5 s scan budget does not bound a single parse. A few MB is enough for the identity fields this function reads.

Consider verifying the resolved path of CODEX_HOME before deduping.

defaultHome comes from the environment and can contain a trailing slash or a relative path. The homes map keys on the raw string, so ~/.codex/ and ~/.codex produce two entries and the same account is scanned twice. fetchCodexAccounts dedupes by email afterwards, so the user impact is limited to duplicate work. Normalizing with resolve() removes it.

Prefer Promise.allSettled so one provider failure does not hide the other.

Bound quota request frequency for both normal polling and forced refreshes. The current 60-second cache/polling behavior can exceed provider limits, while forceRefresh bypasses the cache entirely and can multiply requests across accounts. Use a provider-safe interval with backoff/jitter and retain a short minimum age even for forced refreshes, or document and enforce an equivalent request budget.

Do not surface raw error text as statusDetail.

error.message reaches the UI unchanged. For a timeout it reads "The operation was aborted due to timeout", which is not actionable, and for DNS or proxy failures it can include internal host names. Map the common cases to fixed messages and log the raw error separately.

entries and claudeEntriesByMessage hold every parsed record for the whole window before aggregation starts. At the maximum of 90 days a heavy user produces a large object count in the worker. Folding each entry into the accumulators as it is parsed would keep only the Claude dedupe map resident. This is a scaling note, not a defect at current usage.

TanStack Query v5 placeholderData keepPreviousData previousQuery query key changes official docs

💡 Result:

In TanStack Query v5, the keepPreviousData option and isPreviousData flag were removed in favor of a more unified approach using the placeholderData option and isPlaceholderData flag [1][2][3]. Key changes and migration details include: 1. Replacement of keepPreviousData: The keepPreviousData option is no longer available [1][4]. To achieve the same functionality—where data from the previous query is kept while a new query is fetching—you should now use the placeholderData option with the keepPreviousData function exported by TanStack Query, or an identity function [1][4][5]. Example: placeholderData: keepPreviousData 2. Flag Renaming: The isPreviousData flag has been replaced by isPlaceholderData [1][2][4]. You should update your code to check isPlaceholderData instead [4][5]. 3. Behavioral Differences: - Status State: placeholderData always puts the query into the success state [1][6]. In contrast, keepPreviousData could reflect the status of the previous query (e.g., if the previous query was in an error state, keepPreviousData might propagate that), but this is no longer the case [1][4]. - Timestamping: With keepPreviousData, the dataUpdatedAt timestamp reflected the previous data. With placeholderData, dataUpdatedAt will remain at 0 [1][6]. If you need to track the timestamp of the placeholder data, you may need to manage this manually using local state and useEffect [1][4][6]. 4. Query Keys: There were no fundamental breaking changes to how query keys themselves are defined, but the migration focuses on how the query hook manages transitions between different keys using the updated placeholderData mechanism [7][5]. These changes were made to provide a more consistent API, as keepPreviousData and placeholderData shared similar underlying functionality [1][3].

Do not render usage history from a previous host.

When hostUrl changes, placeholderData: keepPreviousData keeps the previous host's history while the new query is pending. Filter placeholder data to range changes for the same host, or clear it when hostUrl changes. Add a host-A-to-host-B transition test.

Show a no-host state.

When hostUrl is null, useHostUsageHistory disables the query. historyQuery then has no data and no error, so this branch displays “Scanning transcript logs…” indefinitely.

Render a distinct message that tells the user to connect or select a host.

Promote rounded values at unit boundaries.

formatTokens(999_999) returns 1000K, and formatTokens(999_999_999) returns 1000.0M. Promote values when rounding reaches the next suffix.

Handle rejected forced refreshes.

Line 158 starts a remote request and only attaches finally. If the request rejects, the promise returned by finally also rejects and void discards it. This creates an unhandled rejection.

Catch the rejection and show a persistent refresh error state.

🧩 Analysis chain

🌐 Web query:

For TanStack React Query v5, what are useQuery's isPendingandisErrorstates whenenabled is false with no cached data, and when the query function rejects?

💡 Result:

In TanStack React Query v5, the isPending and isError states for useQuery behave as follows when enabled is set to false [1][2]: When enabled is false and no cached data exists: - isPending: true [2][3] - isError: false [1][4] In this state, the query is considered pending because pending signifies that the query has no data available [3][5]. Even though the query is not currently fetching (its fetchStatus is idle), it remains in the pending state until it is enabled and successfully fetches data [2][5]. Because no query attempt has occurred, there is no error, so isError is false [1][4]. When the query function rejects: - isPending: false [1][5] - isError: true [1][5] If the query function throws an error or returns a rejected promise, the query transitions to the error status [6][7]. At this point, isPending becomes false and isError becomes true [1][5]. The error details are then accessible via the error property returned by useQuery [1][5]. Note that because isPending is true for disabled queries with no data, it is generally not suitable for displaying a loading spinner in that specific context [2][8]. Developers often use the derived flag isLoading (which is isPending && isFetching) or check isEnabled if they need to distinguish between a query that is loading data versus one that is simply waiting to be enabled [2][3].

Render no-host and quota-error states before loading and empty-account states. When hostUrl is null, the disabled query remains isPending with no data, so the view shows “Reading subscription usage…”. When the quota request fails, isPending is false and accounts is empty, so the view reports that no logins exist.

Source: [@FlyaKiet poll tweet, 2026-08-14](https://x.com/FlyaKiet/status/2088706419357012478) — "How useful would it be to track token spend in @superset_sh...? Is this a real problem for you?" (11 likes, 1 RT, 17 distinct respondents)

## TL;DR

Sentiment is clearly **in favor** (12 positive, 3 nuanced, 2 negative), but with a twist: the most substantive replies say **quota/limit % (5h session + weekly reset) matters more than raw token counts**. Raw token spend is largely a vanity/brag metric ("burned billions of tokens") plus a "look how much I'm saving vs API pricing" feel-good number. The strongest demand signals: one user already **forked Superset to add it**, and others run CodexBar / `/usage` daily to fill the gap.

**Accuracy verification (2026-08-16):** per-model Aug-15 comparison vs ccusage v20 matches **token-exact and cent-exact** (fable $995.84 / output 1,532,722 / cacheRead 663,336,918 identical) after two parser fixes found by the audit: (1) Claude dedupe must keep the **last** occurrence per message.id+requestId (usage snapshots grow per content-block line; first-wins undercounted output ~10%); (2) Codex re-emits identical `token_count` events back-to-back — consecutive-duplicate suppression brings delta sums within ~1% of Codex's own cumulative `total_token_usage` counters (self-check: 136 sessions). Note ccusage v20 counts Codex too, but its Codex cache-read numbers look wrong (415K/day vs our ~66M/day from the logs' own counters) — don't use it as the Codex oracle. Corrected 30d totals: $19,497 / 14.01B tokens. History also now scans all Claude homes (~/.claude, ~/.config/claude, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR comma-list) with cross-profile dedupe.

Scope the exact-match accuracy claim.

The paragraph opens with a token-exact and cent-exact comparison, but the stated evidence identifies only Fable as identical and reports Codex as within approximately 1%. Name the exact provider and model scope in the headline. Report Codex as approximate.

Use one inclusive threshold definition.

This document defines red as >90%, but plans/20260815-token-spend-twitter-feedback.md uses red at ≥90%. At exactly 90%, the dashboard and its documentation can disagree. Define the boundary once and reuse it in the renderer, tab, and dropdown meter.

Rework the Usage screen around the section-panel idiom usage dashboards
converge on (Cursor's Included Usage Summary, Supabase billing): every
block is a titled, bordered card whose caption carries the fine print —
billing period, estimation basis, refresh cadence — instead of floating
footnotes. Quota providers sit side by side, toggles move into the Token
usage panel header, and the model table gains a Total footer row.

The cost hero adopts Cursor's honesty framing: the API-rate figure is
paired with "Cost to you: $0 — covered by your subscriptions". Superset
logomark heads the page; SupersetIcon is promoted from onboarding to
shared components now that a second surface uses it.

Pushed a UI v2 pass informed by the Mobbin usage-dashboard references (Cursor's usage panel especially): section-panel layout with fine-print captions (billing period, estimation basis), side-by-side provider quota cards, toggles in the panel header, model-table Total row, Cursor's "Cost to you: $0 — covered by your subscriptions" honesty line under the cost hero, and the Superset logomark heading the page (SupersetIcon promoted to shared components).

The paneled v2 layout tripled the page height; this pass optimizes for
everything visible without scrolling (~600px at default window size).
Bordered section bands are gone; quota accounts collapse to compact cards
with one line per window (label · bar · % · reset); the cost hero,
provider shares, chart, stat strip, and breakdowns all tighten; model
table and project bars cap at 4 rows. SupersetIcon moves back to
onboarding — the usage header no longer uses it.

Identify totals that include hidden model rows.

rows contains only four models, but the footer uses totals for all models. The current Total label can make users expect the displayed rows to sum to the footer values. Label the footer All models, or add an omitted-model row, so the cost, share, and token values reconcile.

Do not use color as the only provider identifier.

The colored square is the only provider identifier in each row. Users who cannot distinguish the colors cannot determine whether a model belongs to Claude Code or Codex. Render the provider label or a readable provider abbreviation next to row.model, and mark the color indicator as decorative.

…activity and per-workspace attribution

The chart now grows to available height (aspect-auto + flex fill) so the
page uses the whole window instead of ending at 600px. Two interactions:
provider share rows toggle their series in the chart (last visible series
can't be hidden — an empty chart reads as broken), and clicking a day
selects it, drawing a reference line and an inspection chip with that
day's per-provider cost and tokens.

Attribution is now workspace-aware: the history task receives the host's
workspace worktree paths and project repo paths (prepared on-loop from
host.db, passed to the worker as plain data) and joins transcript cwds by
longest prefix — the breakdown shows real workspace names instead of
directory basenames, with a worktree-segment fallback for unknown paths.
Model and workspace tables grow to 6–7 rows now that there's room.
- prepare joins workspaces to their project so each attribution row
carries the owning project's name; repo checkouts group with their
  own project
- /usage/workspaces gains a Workspaces|Projects pivot; clicking a
project narrows the workspace list with a clearable filter chip
- transcripts now carry a session id (one file = one CLI session) and
the session's first real user prompt as its label (command wrappers,
#-injected context, and caveats skipped); workspace drilldown pages
list the top 20 sessions by cost with provider, date, and tokens
Projects pivot: real projects sorted by the metric, then two pinned
catch-alls — Sessions (project-less session workspaces, e.g. automation
runs) and No project (cwds matching nothing in host.db, mostly deleted
workspaces' worktrees). Clicking any group filters the workspace list
with a clearable chip.
Session rows on the workspace drilldown are now buttons: clicking
copies the transcript's session ID (usable with `claude --resume`)
with an inline 'ID copied' flash; the full ID and hint live in the
tooltip, and a copy glyph appears on hover.
The no-snapshot-fields ratchet bans projects.repoName reads; the label
fallback now uses basename(repoPath). A rejected manual quota refresh
no longer surfaces as an unhandled rejection.
