Summary

A run-once schedule (FREQ=DAILY;COUNT=1;DTSTART=…, typically authored by an agent via CLI/MCP) fires once, then the evaluator disables the trigger and leaves next_run_at at that fire time — correct. The editor then rendered it as "Invalid recurrence rule — changes aren't saved" and "Next run 2 days ago", both wrong.

  • rruleProblem() in shared: distinguishes unparseable from exhausted; isValidRrule delegates to it.
  • ScheduleSentence: only complains about an edited draft (the saved rule being exhausted is history, not an error); wording is "No upcoming runs" vs "Invalid recurrence rule".
  • TriggersCard: a disabled (exhausted) trigger's row reads "Ran 2 days ago" with the exact time in the tooltip.

Not changed: run-once still shows as Custom with the raw rule, since it isn't one of the five preset shapes.

Test plan

  • typecheck desktop + shared, biome, shared rrule tests
  • Open the automation from the screenshot: row says "Ran 2 days ago", no red text
  • Type garbage into Custom → "Invalid recurrence rule…"; type FREQ=DAILY;COUNT=1;DTSTART=20200101T000000Z → "No upcoming runs…"

Summary by cubic

Stops marking already-run schedules as invalid and fixes misleading “next run” text. Previously, a run-once rule that already fired showed “Invalid recurrence rule — changes aren't saved” and “Next run 2 days ago”; now it’s treated as exhausted, shows “No upcoming runs” when editing, and trigger rows read “Ran … ago”.

  • @superset/shared/rrule: adds rruleProblem to distinguish unparseable vs exhausted; isValidRrule delegates to it.
  • Schedule editor: only warns on an edited custom rule; shows “No upcoming runs — changes aren't saved” for exhausted drafts, otherwise “Invalid…”.
  • Triggers card: treats disabled schedules with a final nextRunAt as last run; label reads “Ran … ago” (tooltip shows exact time); still previews “Would run …” for paused automations.
  • Not changed: run-once rules remain “Custom” with the raw RRULE.

Written for commit 55e673f. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Automation schedules now clearly indicate whether they have already run, are scheduled to run next, or would run if re-enabled.
    • Paused automations continue showing their upcoming occurrence accurately.
    • Exhausted recurring schedules are distinguished from invalid schedule rules.
    • Saved, exhausted schedules no longer show an error unless their recurrence settings are changed.
    • Custom recurrence changes are accepted only when valid and different from the saved schedule.

A run-once rule (COUNT=1) that has fired has no future occurrence, which the
editor reported as an invalid recurrence rule that would not be saved, and
the trigger row said the last fire was its next run. rruleProblem now tells
unparseable from exhausted, the sentence only complains about an edited
draft, and an exhausted trigger's row reads "Ran … ago".

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change classifies recurrence rules as unparseable, exhausted, or valid. Schedule editing uses this classification, and trigger cards display exhausted, upcoming, or paused schedule states.

Changes

Recurrence state handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recurrence problem classification
packages/shared/src/rrule.ts
Adds rruleProblem and updates isValidRrule to use it. The helper distinguishes malformed rules, exhausted rules, and rules with future occurrences.
Custom schedule validation
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/automations/components/ScheduleSentence/ScheduleSentence.tsx
Custom schedule commits now require an edited draft without a recurrence problem. The UI displays separate messages for exhausted and invalid rules.
Trigger run-state display
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/automations/$automationId/components/TriggersCard/TriggersCard.tsx
Trigger schedule entries now track exhaustion. Labels show “Ran,” “Next run,” or “Would run” according to schedule and automation state.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 55e67

This change can still reject valid custom schedules, misclassify future one-shot schedules as already run, and show an incorrect run-history label for unrelated triggers. These are bounded but concrete correctness issues, so the PR is not merge-ready until the schedule context and per-trigger exhaustion handling are corrected or explicitly accepted.

Track schedule exhaustion per trigger. The evaluator disables all schedule triggers when one finite schedule has no next occurrence. Each other trigger keeps its nextRunAt, so this code renders Ran ... for schedules that did not run. Update exhaustion by trigger ID and use explicit exhaustion or last-execution state for the Ran label.

Revalidate the rule when commitCustom runs.

rruleProblem depends on the current time, but customProblem does not. A draft with a future UNTIL can become exhausted while the input remains open. Recompute rruleProblem(customDraft) inside commitCustom before emit; otherwise the server rejects the emitted rule.

Use the real schedule context when classifying exhaustion.

rruleProblem uses synthetic dtstart and after values and forces UTC. Because nextOccurrenceAfter is strict-after, FREQ=DAILY;COUNT=1 is marked exhausted when its only occurrence is the synthetic dtstart, even if the saved schedule has a future dtstart. Pass the real dtstart, timezone, and comparison time into the classifier. Add tests for future and past COUNT=1 schedules.

In `@packages/shared/src/rrule.ts` around lines 409 - 422, Update rruleProblem to
accept and pass the saved schedule’s real dtstart, timezone, and comparison time
to nextOccurrenceAfter instead of constructing synthetic Date values or forcing
UTC; preserve unparseable handling and add coverage for future and past COUNT=1
schedules.

* docs: weekly update for PRs merged 2026-08-12 to 2026-08-19

- usage.mdx (new): Usage page - quota meters, multi-account switching,
expired sign-in copy command, token-cost analytics, machine resources
  (#6530, #6567, #6585, #6628)
- agent-integration.mdx: interrupted agent sessions now auto-resume;
Resume button/banner replaced by Resuming pill + failure Retry (#6572)
- automations.mdx: Triggers list on the detail page - multiple schedules,
Add Trigger, explicit Save triggers; Custom label; COUNT/UNTIL and
  no-upcoming-run rules rejected (#6534, #6542, #6618)
- workspaces.mdx: Board default + Filter/Display menus, Pinned filter,

  auto-place in the sidebar (#6558)
- first-workspace.mdx: stale Auto-run command line reworked (toggle now
  lives on tasks surfaces only)

Trigger event providers (Slack/Linear/GitHub/etc.) deliberately not
documented: gated to internal accounts by automation-event-triggers.
