Summary

Splits the Usage tab into two sections behind a pill toggle (workspaces-header style): Token usage (existing quota + history views) and a new Machine resources page that replaces the command-palette resources modal with a full-page, big-screen layout.

  • usage/layout.tsx hoists the shared shell (drag strip, scroll reset) and renders UsageSectionToggle — rounded pills, active state via route match. The four existing route files shrink to content-only.
  • New /usage/resources (UsageResourcesPage): system stat strip (Superset CPU/memory, RAM share, system memory, cores, 1-min load), stacked RAM composition bar (Superset / other apps / free), live ~5-min CPU & memory sparklines fed by a client-side ring buffer of the existing 2 s snapshots, and one aligned process table (app subprocesses + project-grouped workspace/session rows with severity dots and per-row memory-share bars, click-to-navigate). Reuses useResourceSnapshot / useResourceNavigation; grouping/sorting extracted to ResourceConsumption/utils/workspaceGrouping.ts and shared with the v1 TopBar popover (which is unchanged).
  • The palette ResourcesFrame modal is deleted; the resources.check command, CHECK_RESOURCES hotkey, and native "Resources" menu item now navigate to /usage/resources.
  • The tab remembers the last-opened section (usage-last-section-v1 localStorage singleton, registered in the persisted-key registry). Writes are mount-scoped via useRecordUsageSection in each route component — only a mounted section can write, so router exit renders can't clobber it. The dashboard sidebar's Usage entry reopens the remembered section.

Polling costs nothing off-screen: the queries only mount under /usage, interval refetches are already focus-gated via the global focusManager wiring, and the host quota endpoint stays request-driven behind its 5-min cache.

Test plan

  • CDP-verified in the dev app: pill toggle swaps active state and routes both directions; token page renders quota + history under the pills
  • Resources page live: sparklines animate from real 2 s samples, stacked RAM bar + legend, project/workspace/session rows render for host-service terminal sessions; workspace row click navigates to the v2 workspace
  • Remember-last-section journey: pick resources → leave → re-enter lands on /usage/resources; switch to token → leave → re-enter lands on /usage; survives app relaunch
  • Palette "Check resources" / hotkey path navigates to the page (frame deleted, no remaining references)
  • typecheck, biome, unit tests in touched areas, persisted-key registry test

Summary by cubic

Splits the desktop Usage tab into two sections with a pill toggle and replaces the palette Resources modal with a full-page Machine resources view. Previously resources opened in a command-palette frame and the Usage entry always landed on Token usage; now the hotkey/menu/command navigate to /usage/resources and the app reopens the last-used section.

Notes for review and rollout

  • Layout/routing: new usage shell (usage/layout.tsx) hoists drag/scroll reset and renders a pill toggle; existing token-usage routes are content-only. Adds /usage/resources and a section-aware sidebar link that reopens the remembered section.
  • Machine resources page: system stat strip (CPU/memory, RAM share, system memory, cores, 1‑min load), RAM composition bar, live ~5‑min CPU/memory sparklines (client-side ring buffer of 2 s samples), and a project-grouped process table with severity and memory-share bars; row clicks navigate. Reuses useResourceSnapshot/useResourceNavigation; grouping/sorting moved to shared utils for reuse by the TopBar popover.
  • Commands/menu: deletes the palette ResourcesFrame; resources.check now navigates to /usage/resources. The CHECK_RESOURCES hotkey and native “Resources” menu item route to the same page.
  • Persistence: remembers the last-opened section via usage-last-section-v1 (localStorage) written by useRecordUsageSection; registered in the persisted-key registry. Dashboard sidebar Usage honors it.
  • Performance: resource queries only mount under /usage; interval refetches remain focus-gated; host quota endpoint stays request-driven behind its 5‑min cache.

Written for commit 536eef7. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR adds a Usage resources dashboard with live metrics, sorting, expansion, sparklines, and navigation. It introduces shared resource grouping utilities, Usage subsection persistence, a shared Usage layout, and route-based navigation from the command palette and sidebar.

Changes

Usage resources and navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared resource grouping and sorting
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/TopBar/components/ResourceConsumption/...
Shared utilities group workspaces by project and sort workspaces and project groups by resource usage, name, or sidebar order.
Resource dashboard and metric history
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/components/UsageResourcesPage/...
The new resources page displays system, project, workspace, and session metrics. It supports refresh, sorting, expansion, navigation, loading states, empty states, sparklines, and bounded sample history.
Usage route shell and subsection persistence
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/layout.tsx, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/components/UsageSectionToggle/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/hooks/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/utils/usageLastSection/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/usage/*/page.tsx
The authenticated Usage layout renders the subsection toggle and nested content. Usage routes record the active subsection and restore it through persisted routing state.
Command palette and sidebar integration
apps/desktop/src/renderer/commandPalette/..., apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/DashboardSidebar/...
Resource actions navigate to /usage/resources. Sidebar Usage navigation resolves the previously visited Usage subsection. The removed resources frame is no longer used.

Extract the shared project/workspace/session row tree.

This block duplicates the rendering logic in apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/TopBar/components/ResourceConsumption/components/WorkspaceResourceSection/WorkspaceResourceSection.tsx: the same chevron toggles, severity badges, collapse state handling, and navigation handlers, with only spacing and text sizes different. The grouping utilities were already centralised in this PR. Extract a shared row component that accepts density or class overrides, so severity and navigation behavior stay identical across the TopBar popover and the Usage page.

Memoize the derived groups and pass a stable onNavigate callback.

The grouping, sorting, and totals run on every render, including every 2 s poll and every collapse toggle. Wrap them in useMemo. useResourceNavigation also receives a new options object and a new inline onNavigate function on every render; if that hook stores the callback in an effect dependency, the effect re-runs on each render.

Consider one shared sort helper with a deterministic tie-break.

sortWorkspaces and sortProjectGroups differ only in the name field and the id field. A single generic helper removes the duplication. A name tie-break also makes the memory, cpu, and sidebar cases deterministic when values or sidebar positions are equal. Items missing from the order map currently all map to Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER and keep input order only because Array.prototype.sort is stable.

♻️ Proposed shared helper
function sortByOption<T>(
	items: T[],
	sortOption: SortOption,
	accessors: { id: (item: T) => string; name: (item: T) => string; cpu: (item: T) => number; memory: (item: T) => number },
	sidebarOrder: string[],
): T[] {
	const orderMap = new Map(sidebarOrder.map((id, index) => [id, index]));
	const byName = (a: T, b: T) => accessors.name(a).localeCompare(accessors.name(b));
	const sorted = [...items];
	switch (sortOption) {
		case "memory":
			sorted.sort((a, b) => accessors.memory(b) - accessors.memory(a) || byName(a, b));
			break;
		case "cpu":
			sorted.sort((a, b) => accessors.cpu(b) - accessors.cpu(a) || byName(a, b));
			break;

			sorted.sort(byName);
			break;
		case "sidebar":
			sorted.sort(
				(a, b) =>
					(orderMap.get(accessors.id(a)) ?? Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) -
						(orderMap.get(accessors.id(b)) ?? Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) || byName(a, b),
			);
			break;
	}
	return sorted;

Add unit tests for the extracted utilities.

This module is now shared by WorkspaceResourceSection.tsx and UsageResourcesPage.tsx. Tests for project aggregation and each sort option protect both consumers from regressions. The repository guidelines require co-located tests, so place the test next to this file.

I can generate the test file if you want.

Move the local components into their own folders.

This file defines Stat, MemoryShareBar, MetricCells, MemoryLegendItem, SystemOverview, and UsageResourcesPage. The repository guidelines require one component per file, one folder per component with an index.ts barrel, and nesting single-use components under the parent's components/. Move each of these five helper components to UsageResourcesPage/components/<Name>/<Name>.tsx with an index.ts.

MetricCells, MemoryShareBar, and UsageSeverityBadge-based rows are also candidates for promotion if the TopBar resource section later reuses them.

As per coding guidelines: "One folder per component: ComponentName/ComponentName.tsx + index.ts for barrel export", "One component per file: No multi-component files", and "Co-locate by usage: If used once, nest under parent's components/".
