Event triggers become reachable. The automation page now edits the whole trigger set rather than just a schedule, so a GitHub trigger can be created without hand-writing an API call.

No migration.

The sentence grammar is data

Each event names its own words and its own slots, because the filters genuinely differ:

Draft opened in [repos] by [anyone]
[Any comment] by [anyone] on a PR by [anyone] in [repos]
Push to [branches] in [repos] by [anyone]
Workflow failed in [repos]

A comment carries two independent people — who wrote it, and who opened the thing it's on — where a push carries neither. Keeping that as a table means the row renders one way and every event describes itself, rather than a growing pile of conditionals per event.

"Any" is a menu entry, not the empty state

An empty scope matches nothing, by design — that's what stops a half-built trigger firing on every repository. So the UI can't treat blank as "everything": choosing Any repo is its own deliberate act, and an unset chip is visibly marked as blocking Save.

Validation is the server's

describeTriggerProblems and summarizeTriggerProblems come from @superset/shared — the same functions the API rejects with. The form blocks Save on exactly what the server would refuse, instead of restating the rules and drifting.

Repositories keyed by id

The picker stores GitHub's numeric repoId, which is what the matcher compares against. A full name would stop matching the moment someone renames the repository.

What making types honest surfaced

automation.get now returns the trigger set with ids, so a save updates rows in place rather than replacing them — which would roll a webhook's key and reset a schedule's next run.

More usefully: the schedule projection was still typed sql<string> after the join became a left join. Making it honestly nullable surfaced eight places that assumed every automation has a schedule —

  • the list's schedule column and the row label
  • the next-run preview and its timezone tooltip
  • setEnabled's resume recompute
  • update's recurrence recompute and its trigger sync
  • setPrompt's response

Each would have crashed or displayed a schedule that doesn't exist, for exactly the automations this feature creates. Same class as the dtstart-as-string bug earlier: a type assertion the compiler kept believing.

Not in this PR

  • People pickers are empty. "Specific People" needs a member list, and me needs GitHub identities linked to users — it currently matches nobody rather than misfiring. Both are backlog A2/A3.
  • Branch and label pickers are free of options — they accept "any" but have nothing to enumerate until we sync branches and labels.
  • Slack, Sentry and Linear aren't in the Add Trigger menu yet; their schemas exist but nothing ingests them into automation_events.

Typecheck, lint and the full suite pass. Not yet verified against a running app — worth a CDP pass before merge.

Summary by cubic

Replaces the schedule-only autosave with a sentence-based trigger editor and explicit Save/Discard. Draft triggers no longer disappear; validation runs on Save and a successful save toasts while failures keep edits.

  • Adds a sentence-chip TriggersEditor with provider icons and searchable Add Trigger; shows per‑trigger “Next run …” inline and formats it in the schedule’s timezone with a read‑only abbreviation; removes the TimezonePicker. Aligns the scope line to chip styling. Populates people from integration.github.listLinkedPeople; repositories are keyed by GitHub numeric ids. Branch and label filters default to Any and clear back to Any. Renames “Version history” to “Prompt history.”

  • automation.get returns ordered triggers (id, kind, config, enabled, nextRunAt) and derives the soonest schedule (rrule, dtstart, timezone, nextRunAt) plus scheduleText (“Event triggered” when none). Allows multiple schedule triggers per automation; resuming recomputes each schedule’s nextRunAt. Legacy syncScheduleTrigger updates the oldest schedule and deletes extras. Adds integration.github.listLinkedPeople. Migration: drop the unique schedule index and add non‑unique automation_triggers_schedule_idx; no backfill.

Written for commit 2cfca1c. Summary will update on new commits.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to 65bfb

Updating an automation’s name or agent can delete additional configured schedules, while multi-schedule responses and next-run displays can show incorrect schedule information. These correctness and data-loss issues should be fixed before merge.

Put each component in its own file.

chips.tsx defines ChipButton, ScopeChip, and ActorChip. Split these into separate co-located component files and export them through a local barrel.

As per coding guidelines, **/*.{tsx,ts} requires “One component per file.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not present an empty scope as “Any”.

newGithubConfig initializes applicable branch and label scopes as null. ScopeChip renders null with emptyLabel, so a new trigger displays “Any branch” or “Any label” before the user makes that explicit selection. The shared validation used by TriggersEditor does not reject these empty scopes. The trigger can therefore save and match nothing.

Use “Select branch” and “Select label” for empty scopes. Add validation that blocks saving until the user selects values or explicitly selects “Any”.

Event triggers become reachable: the automation page now edits the whole
trigger set instead of just a schedule.

- the sentence grammar is data. Each event names its own words and slots,
because the filters genuinely differ — a comment carries both a comment
author and the author of the thing commented on, a push carries neither.
- validation comes from @superset/shared, so the form blocks Save on
exactly what the API would reject rather than restating the rules.
- 'Any' is its own menu entry rather than the empty state. An empty scope
matches nothing, so choosing 'any' has to be deliberate.
- repositories are keyed by GitHub's numeric id, which is what the matcher
compares; a full name would stop matching after a rename.
- automation.get returns the trigger set with ids, so a save updates rows
in place rather than replacing them and rolling a webhook key.

Making the schedule projection honestly nullable surfaced eight places
that assumed every automation has one — the list label, the next-run
preview, setEnabled's resume, update's recompute. Each is now handled;
before, an event-only automation would have crashed or shown a schedule it
does not have.
listLinkedPeople returns the org's GitHub identities, keyed by GitHub's
numeric id — what an event carries and what matching compares. Today that
is org members who linked GitHub; it widens to repository collaborators
when those are synced, without the shape changing.
Adding a GitHub trigger was impossible. The editor was fully controlled by
the automation detail route, so selecting "Comment added" pushed a trigger
with no repository straight to automation.update, which correctly rejected
the set ("Some triggers need additional configuration"). The row then
vanished on the next render from server state, leaving only a toast — there
was no moment in which the repository could be chosen.

The editor now holds drafts and saves only a set the API would accept,
which is what its doc comment already claimed. It adopts what was saved
(that is where trigger ids come from) except when there is unsaved work
here, which by definition was never sent. Since there is no Save button,
the chips blocking the save are marked individually — a sentence has three
chips and the banner names the problem without pointing at it.

The schedule row was built from a SelectTrigger, a bare time input and a
PickerTrigger, each carrying its own height, padding and font size, so it
rendered 32px/14px chips beside the 24px/13px ones in the GitHub row. Both
sentences now share one chip vocabulary. The chips are plain buttons rather
than the shared Button: a chip needs height, padding and font size all
smaller than any size variant offers, and class merging does not reliably
win against a variant's own classes.

TimezonePicker moves onto the same chip (it is used only here);
PickerTrigger is untouched, as ten other call sites depend on it.
Checked the rendered layout rather than only the chip metrics, which is
where the earlier pass stopped. Chip geometry already matched (24px, 13px,
6px radius, 6% fill, 0 6px 0 8px, 60% when unset); three structural things
did not.

A hairline separates the rows from Add Trigger, inset from the surface edge
so it reads as a rule inside the surface rather than a division of the card.

The comment filter was an inline text input, which is several chips wide and
breaks the line the sentence is trying to read as. It is now a chip opening
a popover with the field inside. No regex toggle, unlike the reference —
isRegex is pinned false because the pattern runs on the webhook path.

Next run moves inline onto the schedule row, so the trigger surface says
when it fires rather than leaving that to a caption under the whole card.

text-warning and ring-warning were doing nothing: there is no warning token
in the theme, so the banner rendered as plain foreground and the invalid
chip got a default-coloured ring. RelayOfflineNotice, in this same card,
already uses amber-500 — both now follow it.
…chips

Triggers now save on request rather than on every edit, with Discard and
Save on the section label's line.

Autosave could not work once a trigger set had validation. A trigger is
invalid the moment it is added, so the API rejected the whole set and the
new row vanished; saving silently at the moment it happened to become valid
was no better, since nothing said which edit crossed the line or that
anything had been written. Save is disabled rather than hidden while the
set is invalid, with the reason beside it — a button that disappears reads
as saved.

The actions sit above the surface, not below: a Save that trails the rows
drifts down the page as triggers are added, and the reason it is disabled
goes with it. That meant moving the "Triggers" label into the editor, which
has one caller.

The scope line is the same grammar as a trigger sentence — "in X on Y using
Z" — but rendered at 36px/12px, 22px/11px and 36px/12px, none of which
matched the 24px/13px chips directly above. The chip classes are passed per
call site, so the three pickers keep their own look everywhere else.

Verified: adding a GitHub trigger shows Save disabled with the banner and
the offending chip marked; choosing a repository enables it; reloading
without saving discards the draft; saving persists across a reload.
Every trigger is incomplete the instant it is added — "Draft opened in
[Select repos]" has nothing selected yet — so validating on change marked
the row and raised a banner before anyone had the chance to fill it in. The
complaint arrived before the work.

Problems now surface when Save is pressed. After a refused save they stay
live, so each one clears as it is fixed rather than only on the next
attempt.

Save is no longer disabled while the set is invalid. The button is what
asks for validation, so disabling it left no way to find out what was
wrong — the banner it would have explained itself with only appears once
the button has been pressed.
Saving gave no sign it had happened — the buttons vanished, which is what
an abandoned edit looks like too. A save now toasts. Only the trigger set
gets one: every other patch on this page shows its own result, a picker
relabels or a toggle flips, but a saved trigger set looks exactly like the
unsaved one it replaced.

The save is also awaited now. It cleared its dirty state as soon as the
mutation was fired, so a rejected write left the buttons gone and the edits
looking saved when they had not been. This editor holds the only copy of
them, so it keeps them and stays dirty until the write lands. The button
reads "Saving..." while in flight and both actions are disabled, so the set
cannot be submitted twice.
From CodeRabbit's review of this PR.

newGithubConfig left branches and labels null whenever the event showed
those slots. Null matches nothing — deliberately, so a half-built trigger
cannot fire on every repository — but the chip renders null with its empty
label, which for these reads "Any branch" and "Any label". Nothing
validates them either, so a new "New push to branch" trigger looked
complete, claimed to match every branch, and would never have fired.

They now start at "any", shown or not: they are optional narrowings, unlike
the repository, which stays null and is what the form refuses to save
without. Clearing one back to nothing means "any" for the same reason —
the chip says so either way, and null would make it a lie.

Also from that review: "PR pushed to in" was not a sentence, and each
schedule's next run was formatted in the automation-level timezone, which
is the soonest schedule's — wrong for every other row once schedules can
sit in different zones. The timezone now travels with the date.

chips.tsx held five components against the one-per-file rule in AGENTS.md;
they are now co-located components with their shared classes in
chipStyles.ts.

Verified against the dev database: a saved push trigger stores
branches {"mode":"any"} rather than null.
"newGithubConfig" reads as the newer of two implementations rather than
"construct one", and there is no older counterpart to contrast it with. The
repo already names factories create* elsewhere (createKimiConfigToml,
createGrokConfigToml, createConfigFile), so this follows that.
