Problem

On Windows, PortScanner runs powershell.exe with Get-NetTCPConnection and Get-Process every 3 seconds, even when there are no terminal processes to match (targetPids is empty). In live traces one poll took up to 22,522ms, and polls hit the 5,000ms timeout every time, so a PowerShell process was always running in the background.

Change

  • Return an empty snapshot right away on Windows when no terminals are tracked and no URLs are configured, so idle polls spawn no process.
  • Replace the PowerShell WMI query with two concurrent calls, netstat.exe -ano -p tcp and netstat.exe -ano -p tcpv6 (about 50ms). parseWindowsListenerLine finds listening sockets by the foreign port :0 rather than the state column, so it works on any Windows locale (for example, German shows ABHÖREN). The old host|port|pid|name line format still parses.
  • netstat reports only PIDs, so each web server that will be shown gets its name from one filtered tasklist.exe /FI "PID eq <pid>" call. Names are cached per PID, so polls after the first spawn only netstat.
  • The netstat output cap is 16 MiB because -ano lists every connection, not only listeners. Output that hits the cap still errors and is never parsed half-read.

Scope and approval

This is the PortScanner part of #18508, split into its own PR to follow the one-problem rule in CONTRIBUTING.md. It touches only apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.ts and apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.test.ts.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.test.ts: 24 passed. The new Windows test mocks netstat output for TCP and TCPv6, including German-locale ABHÖREN rows and established connections that should be ignored, plus a tasklist response. It checks that nothing is spawned when no terminals are tracked, that listeners are found with process name node, and that tasklist runs once across repeated polls.
  • vp lint on both files: clean. tsc-rs -p apps/server/tsconfig.json --noEmit: exit 0.
  • Live traces on Windows on ARM: PowerShell polls took up to 22,522ms and timed out at 5,000ms. With no tracked terminals, polls now return in 0ms. With tracked terminals, the netstat calls take about 50ms. The name lookup takes about 200ms and runs once per new server PID.

📝 Walkthrough

The Windows port scanner now discovers TCP and TCPv6 listeners with netstat.exe. It parses listener records and uses tasklist.exe to resolve missing process names for discovered PIDs. Completed lookups are cached for 60 seconds.

Changes: Windows listener discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse Windows listener records
apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.ts
The parser handles pipe-delimited records and standard netstat rows. It retains valid local listener endpoints and PIDs, and parses matching tasklist CSV rows.
Run and validate TCP listener scans
apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.ts, apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.test.ts
Windows scans run netstat.exe queries for TCP and TCPv6 concurrently. If either query fails, the scanner discards listener data and still probes configured URLs. Tests cover idle scans, IPv4 and IPv6 listeners, established-connection exclusion, and query failure.
Resolve and cache process names
apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.ts, apps/server/src/preview/PortScanner.test.ts
The scanner looks up missing process names with tasklist.exe, runs up to four lookups concurrently, and caches completed lookups for 60 seconds. Tests cover failed-lookup retries and cached-name refresh.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 69e15

Windows listener discovery now uses paired netstat queries and cached process-name lookups. The reviewed evidence establishes no actionable merge-blocking risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 69e15

The change preserves existing authorization and terminal-ownership checks. Incomplete listener queries are discarded, and cached process names do not grant access or select probe targets. No material security risk was identified in the reviewed change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change affects Windows host listener discovery and preview metadata. It introduces no new network route or privilege request; automatic probing remains constrained by registered terminal ownership, while configured-URL probing follows the existing separate path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No new command-injection path was established through listener records: executable names and netstat options are fixed, parsed PIDs become numbers before tasklist argument construction, and matching tasklist output is consumed only as process-name metadata.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public-facing subscription remains governed by AuthOrchestrationReadScope. Terminal Manager supplies process ownership, and neither netstat records nor tasklist names independently grant preview eligibility.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Listener execution uses five-second timeouts and a 16 MiB output limit per query. Production execution rejects output overflow rather than returning truncated success. Tasklist enrichment has bounded concurrency and output; failed lookups remain uncached and can retry without changing ownership.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR replaces the active Windows port-discovery implementation and adds substantial subprocess, parsing, caching, concurrency, and fallback logic. The change is well-scoped and tested, but it alters an existing production path enough to warrant human review.

No code changes detected at c02b3c1. Prior analysis still applies.

Numbers from a second Windows machine, in case they help review. We adopted this into a fork today.

Timed outside the app with a small Node script, five rounds each, Windows 11 Pro, UI culture en-US, Node 24.13:

Query Wall time per poll Rows
the current powershell.exe ... Get-NetTCPConnection -State Listen ... Get-Process command, copied from PortScanner.ts 2,272 to 2,668 ms 106 lines
netstat.exe -ano -p tcp and -p tcpv6 run concurrently 20 to 34 ms 547 TCP rows, 110 with foreign port :0
one tasklist.exe /FO CSV /NH /FI "PID eq ..." 294 ms (single sample)

So on this machine the old query used most of every 3-second poll interval, and the netstat pair is about a hundred times faster. I never saw the 5-second timeout here, so the 22-second polls from your trace must come from a slower or busier host.

Two things for you to judge:

  • The two sources did not agree exactly: 106 lines from PowerShell, 110 listeners from netstat. I did not look into which rows differ (it may be timing, or IPv4/IPv6 pairs).
  • tasklist at about 0.3 s per PID is not free, so the per-PID name cache matters; a first poll that has to name several servers will take a second or two.

On our branch PortScanner.test.ts goes from 23 to 24 passing with your change and tsc --noEmit in apps/server is clean.

Not checked: a non-English Windows (this one prints LISTENING), and the change running inside the app; the fork's server has not been restarted onto it yet.

@AdEx-Partners-DE thanks, the second machine helps. On your two points:

  • 106 vs 110: the scanner keeps only loopback/wildcard listeners and dedupes by port, so a few extra rows only change the result if one lands on a port a tracked terminal owns. I haven't checked which rows differ either.
  • tasklist cost: names are looked up only for servers that pass the web probe and will be shown, not for every listener. Since 9660150 the lookups run at most 4 at a time and each name is cached for 60s, so after the first poll a name costs about one ~0.3s lookup per minute.

@Daniel-Alhadeff this replaces the PowerShell/Get-NetTCPConnection loop from #5900 with netstat. If you try the branch, could you leave preview discovery running with a local server started from a T3 terminal for about 10 minutes and check whether the repeated Get-NetTCPConnection launches and associated CPU/stutter stop while the server is still discovered? Windows version, architecture, and the commit tested would help.
