Replaces #16221. An automated cleanup closed it saying the description named no model or harness. It did, in its footer, and this one does too: gpt-6.1-sol via Codex wrote the change, and Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code rebased it onto current main (ac2cc78d4a) for this PR. The change itself is the same.

Problem

With “Show finished paragraphs,” completed Mermaid fences remain source until the entire response finishes. The setting promises each completed paragraph or code block immediately, and the server has already delivered the complete fence while later paragraphs continue arriving.

Change

Use the parsed fence's closure to reveal completed Mermaid blocks during streaming. Unfinished fences retain source. Reuse the existing lazy renderer, source toggle, error handling, and reduced-motion-aware fade, reserving space while rendering is pending.

Scope and approval

Submitted under the very small, focused obvious-bug exception: this corrects an inconsistency in the existing streaming setting without adding a setting or workflow. The fix stays in the shared web renderer. No prior maintainer approval is claimed.

Verification

Rerun on this head:

  • vp test run apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.test.tsx: 90 passed. With main's ChatMarkdown.tsx, MermaidDiagram.tsx and index.css restored, the 9 Mermaid streaming cases fail. The regression covers unfinished fences, pending rendering, reveal before message completion, retained diagram identity and later prose, including tilde, blockquote/list, overindented-marker, and CRLF cases. Mermaid rendering is mocked in this test.
  • Web tsc --noEmit, targeted lint and formatting pass; lint reports warnings in unchanged code.
  • The rebase conflicted only in the test file: main added its own static Mermaid mock, so the two are now one mock that renders immediately unless a test hands it a promise.

Carried over from #16221 and not rerun after the rebase:

  • In an isolated T3 Browser chat, the diagram rendered while the response was streaming and later paragraphs arrived. Source toggle and expansion were exercised.

Desktop: The author uses this change daily in the packaged Windows desktop app, in a personal build of the official nightly with their open PRs merged in, and confirms it works there. That use was manual and is not recorded. Mobile was not tested; it has no Mermaid renderer.

Before is left; after is right. Both responses are still streaming.

Completed Mermaid block during streaming: source before, rendered diagram after

mermaid-block-streaming-before-after.mp4

The recording shows the baseline's eventual reveal and ends while the longer response still streams. These are separate GPT-6-Luna/high responses to the same prompt with original capture timing; the comparison demonstrates ordering, not relative generation speed.

Note

🤖 Agent assistance: gpt-6.1-sol via Codex; Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code (rebase)

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 100f219

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, well-tested web rendering fix that reveals completed Mermaid blocks during response streaming while preserving unfinished source and existing rendering behavior. It does not change product defaults, APIs, security-sensitive code, or deployment configuration.

📝 Walkthrough

ChatMarkdown checks whether a Mermaid fence is closed before rendering its diagram during streaming. The change updates the pending-render fallback, shell-command eligibility, Mermaid styling, and tests for fence closure and streamed updates.

Changes: Streaming Mermaid rendering

Closed-fence rendering and presentation
apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MermaidDiagram.tsx, apps/web/src/index.css
Fence closure controls Mermaid rendering during streaming and shell-command eligibility. The pending-render fallback now hides the source code block. Mermaid diagrams receive the streaming fade, and tests cover fence variants, pending rendering, and streamed updates.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 100f2

Most streaming Mermaid behavior is ready, but an invalid fence followed by a newline can reveal a diagram prematurely. The edge case should be fixed or accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 100f2

Diagrams can render earlier, but the existing sanitization and terminal-action controls remain in place. Remaining uncertainty concerns an unusual fence-closure case and interrupted rendering, rather than a demonstrated privilege or data-access expansion.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure change is earlier automatic diagram processing in the viewing browser, using a shared in-page render queue and cache. The inspected change does not establish new server, tenant, credential, or terminal authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Terminal execution remains behind an explicit button click, a supplied callback, non-streaming state, shell-language checks, and command-content checks. Internal newlines and invisible control characters are rejected. The closure change does not remove any of these gates.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing renderer serializes global Mermaid configuration changes, caches promises by source and theme, converts load/render failures to local error results, and removes temporary render DOM in finally. Pending cache entries are not evicted, and component unmount does not cancel queued work. Earlier invocation makes these existing lifecycle policies relevant during streaming; no material security impact from that interaction was established.
