fix(link): restore owned integrations before native signal exit - #774
Restore native Codex routing, catalog/history and managed Grok configuration before an unsupervised Remote Link Child releases its listener during handled-signal shutdown.
Recheck the served connection snapshot before each write, excluding only normal catalogFingerprint/catalogSyncedAt metadata while preserving priorCatalog and shared full-connection CAS; refuse restoration after owner replacement, pending transitions or unverifiable journal state. A rejected Codex restore cannot proceed into Grok cleanup.
Preserve integrations owned by Service/Desktop supervision, a sibling or an outstanding parent teardown receipt.
Reject new restart admission with 409 runtime_stopping, join accepted restart/recycle work and cancel unfired recycle timers before teardown.
Fence in-flight sync at the existing configuration mutation boundary before catalog, routing, settings and cache commits. Late work is refused during shutdown; explicit offline sync after completed shutdown remains supported.
Require explicit sync-fence evidence. Retry only wrapped SQLITE_BUSY/SQLITE_LOCKED contention, bounded to 20 attempts with 50 ms waits; other failures stop immediately.
The branch preserves the original source history and integrates dev 63de499e, retaining lidge-jun#7736's parent/API restoration, attestation, per-write ownership checks, HTTP 409 behavior and receipt settlement. Saved connection credentials remain intact.
Separate runtime/sync-process regressions hold catalog and Home-settings responses across shutdown, check durable files after exit, and cover completed-sync controls, unverifiable runtimes and preservation owners. Focused serial connect checks passed 53/53 (309 assertions), and the synthetic ACL-fixture suite passed 11/11 (51 assertions); this is not native ACL acceptance.
Current status
HEAD: cea1e29c0b5c7162974c73a6a865f37f2904c98f — 28 changed files; open, Ready and unmerged. This source branch is also reviewed in upstream #8036; the existing source writer retains ownership. Source-fork inline findings are resolved; the upstream documentation follow-up below remains open.
CodeRabbit review of this exact head completed on 2026-11-01 with one unresolved documentation Minor: r4433975150 asks to move operator recovery steps from structure/remote-link.md into the user-facing CLI lifecycle guide. The existing writer has been asked to validate and address it; ACK/fix is not yet confirmed. The five earlier inline findings are resolved.
Source-fork CI41187421457, Catalog41187421468 and Service lifecycle41187421450 passed; these are distinct from upstream validation.
The current commit only defines configuration mutation lock C in documentation; runtime/test bytes match 521d14c5. Structure and file-size gates passed. Runtime checks below retain their original revision scope rather than being presented as reruns:
Final runtime baseline 521d14c5: Windows stop/startup/signal checks 65 pass / 1 POSIX-only skip / 729 assertions, typecheck 2,255 files, structure/privacy/size gates passed. A real separate-process SQLite lock held for 150 ms failed before the fix; recovery, exhaustion and non-contention refusal cases cover the bounded retry.
Actual POSIX signal: Ubuntu job 124490834069 passed OS-delivered SIGTERM restoration after catalog sync in 492.92 ms on 521d14c5. Local process.emit checks are not OS-delivered or installed-platform evidence.
Integration coverage: Windows/Bun 1.4.4, isolated homes and normal preload: 345 pass / 1 POSIX skip / 2,211 assertions. Follow-up direct signal/runtime/drain checks passed 77 / 1 skip / 555 assertions after correcting the source-wiring failure. Layout/tooling passed 29 / 579 assertions; documentation built 633 pages / 91,435 links, including eight lifecycle translations.
Mutation checks verified served-connection CAS, restore-before-release, post-await shutdown refusal and pending-recycle cancellation; original production files were restored before the passing validation.
Full local repository execution used the documented resource-scope exception; broader coverage is supplied by exact-head hosted CI. Policy-skipped native jobs are not executed platform coverage.
Earlier failed or cancelled runs are not counted as passes: the integration source-wiring failure, the expanded 278 pass / 1 skip / 5 timeout failures, and cancelled e4c3/6048 runs remain historical failures/incomplete evidence. Focused serial or synthetic ACL checks do not establish native ACL acceptance.
Remaining acceptance
Installed Windows/macOS service shutdown remains unverified. Forced termination can bypass signal handlers; parent ocx stop restoration remains necessary.
Automatic Codex security review could not complete because the paying account reached its usage limit. This is neither a security pass nor a vulnerability verdict.
Scope, behavior changes and validation limitations are documented.
Exact current-head upstream CI, Catalog and Service lifecycle passed.
Current review follow-ups are complete — one documentation Minor awaits the existing writer.
Independent maintainer/security acceptance is complete.
Installed Windows/macOS service acceptance is complete.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Unsupervised Link Child instances now restore native Codex and managed Grok settings during orderly shutdown, checking the connection before each write. Settings remain intact when managed by a supervisor, sibling, restart handoff, or parent stop operation.
Shutdown waits for accepted restart handoffs or recycling to finish. Restart requests during shutdown are rejected with 409 runtime_stopping; restoration is refused if connection or ownership can’t be verified. Forced termination may bypass signal-based restoration; use the parent ocx stop command when needed.
Improved cached-token usage reporting for Ollama, monthly quota updates, local compaction routing, and compatibility with Kimi Code Responses.

Link Child shutdown now fences sync and restores eligible routing before listener release. The changes also update quota retirement, provider adapters, Responses routing and tool validation, and parsed JSON byte accounting.
Link sync checks runtime state before committing catalog and settings changes. Shutdown can mark a runtime as stopping. Routing restoration checks connection and journal ownership before writes. Tests exercise restoration, refusal cases, and sync/shutdown coordination.
Shutdown waits for accepted restart handoffs and recycling, then restores eligible routing. Restart requests during shutdown return 409 runtime_stopping. Update teardown checks whether the client connection is connected when deciding whether to create a handover.
Document shutdown and recovery docs-site/src/content/docs/*/reference/cli/lifecycle.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/lifecycle.md, structure/remote-link.md, structure/runtime.md, scripts/test-layout/layout-clients.json
Lifecycle documentation describes signal restoration, preserved ownership cases, restart refusal, and recovery after stopping a Child. Runtime and remote-link documentation describes the sync fences and shutdown boundaries.
Pool observations can mark monthly-window absence when the topology is complete and meets the stated conditions. Quota merging can then retire a carried monthly tuple under the writer-proof condition. Tests cover qualifying and preserving cases.
With codexClientCompaction enabled, matching local checkpoint requests with Responses implementation metadata can use compaction routing. Tests cover metadata validation, transport cases, and the forwarded request.
Include current-turn hosted tool names src/server/responses-undeclared-tool-guard.ts, src/server/responses/request-prepare.ts, tests/responses/explicit-empty-tool-catalog-history.test.ts, structure/transports/response-turn-membership.md
Current-turn hosted tool_search declarations contribute their translated function name to tool restrictions. Replayed declarations alone do not add authorization.
Parsed JSON size now uses iterative serialized UTF-8 byte counting, with or without a translator budget. Tests cover varied values and deeply nested JSON.

Shutdown restoration and sync fencing look sound at the current head. Before merge, address the two Responses-routing issues: a cross-provider local compaction summary that can silently drop an unreadable checkpoint, and server-executed tool search being returned as a client call. Explanation
The title "fix(link): restore owned integrations before native signal exit" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives show the core work restores Codex routing and managed Grok config in link-mode shutdown before the listener closes on handled signals. The changes in src/client/stop-routing.ts, src/client/runtime.ts, and src/client/runtime-restart.ts support this. The title also uses the conventional fix(scope) form and is concise. It omits secondary work such as the 409 runtime_stopping response, SQLite retry limits, and the unrelated Kimi, Ollama, and quota changes, which is acceptable for a title.

Integrate dev 9e48f78 without rewriting the published branch history. A service-manager-stopped Link Child must restore its owned route instead of leaving a standalone update receipt that client startup cannot discharge.
Add a production-path stop regression and align all eight lifecycle guides with guarded restoration, refusal and recovery behavior.

Keep the recovery-evidence guidance and the runtime behavior unchanged.
Current integration review: published head remains bb775e13a2bdf498b4d1c7e9616cc4aae21e94ea; the existing post-release integration hold and explicit maintainer security acceptance remain in place. The branch now conflicts with its base. Its old passing checks do not validate a future combined tree.
Upstream lidge-jun#7736 is merged, but it is not an exact replacement for this candidate's contract. That change restores routing/catalog/history and managed Grok state, while this PR describes routing-only restoration with other client state preserved. At upstream dev@f9e7d939, the native Link client's src/client/runtime.ts signal shutdown stops the supervisor/listener and cleans up without this candidate's restoreLinkClientRouting() call before listener release; connected-client startup returns through startClientRuntime() rather than the ordinary server shutdown path.
The remaining decision is the intended restoration contract for that direct signal-stop path. This is a source-path comparison, not a new native reproduction or security acceptance. Keeping this PR open under its existing hold avoids both discarding a potentially necessary boundary and replaying an older full implementation over the integrated lidge-jun#7736 behavior. A future adaptation needs focused current-dev signal/listener-order regressions and review of the chosen restoration scope.
Rechecked the existing candidate without changing its branch. Head remains bb775e13a2bdf498b4d1c7e9616cc4aae21e94ea; all 7 inline threads are resolved. The last docs-only commit preserves the runtime/test subtrees of c5b7e68a, so those resolved reviews should not be repeated.
The remaining integration scope is more specific than a general rebase:
A read-only merge-tree comparison against upstream dev f4eef7b23ef2154d6d004077c5522d754a72c0d5 and fork dev 8a6cea9c168666733d97dd8172cbe6296b1b0104 finds the same 18 conflicting files. The 7 candidate commits / 41 changed files are 136 commits behind upstream dev. No actual merge or conflict resolution was applied.
A unique gap remains: current upstream src/client/runtime.ts handles direct native Link shutdown by closing supervision, stopping the listener, cleaning PID/port records, and exiting, without a routing-restore call. This candidate restores connection-owned routing before listener shutdown. fix(link): restore local routing when a Link Child stops lidge-jun/opencodex#7736 therefore does not by itself establish that this PR is fully superseded.
Decision needed from the existing owner/maintainer: should direct native Link signal shutdown use the full shared-state restoration contract of lidge-jun#7736, or retain a narrow connection-owned routing restoration? Once that boundary is accepted, adapt only the remaining native path to current dev and preserve the already merged guards/attestation/receipt behavior. Please acknowledge the current writer and that narrow follow-up scope before a second implementation is started.
Exact-head CI 40439566150 remains 15 successful jobs / 9 policy skips. The signal fixture invokes process.emit(signal); useful production-path regression coverage is not installed Windows/macOS shutdown acceptance. A future integrated head needs its own CI, native OS evidence and explicit security/maintainer acceptance.
The existing post-release integration hold remains. Ready status and resolved threads are preserved; they do not remove that hold. No branch update, new PR, CI dispatch, native installation or PR closure was performed for this check.
Preserve the merged parent/API stop contract. Restore an unsupervised Link Child before listener release with per-write served-connection checks; serialize signal shutdown with accepted restart/recycle ownership and reject pending restart admissions. Keep supervisors and parent receipts authoritative.

🔍 Signal exit hides retained Codex provider guidance
If native history keeps opencodex-tagged threads, restoration retains their provider table. The signal path exits without surfacing retainedCodexProviderTable or its recovery guidance; check whether operators can discover this state.

* fix(server): account for normalized inbound JSON
* fix(server): measure parsed JSON size without recursion
Normalized JSON byte accounting now walks the parsed value iteratively and returns the UTF-8 length JSON.stringify would produce, so deeply nested valid bodies are measured instead of throwing.
* fix(server): keep JSON size measurement memory bounded by depth
Walk containers with one cursor frame each instead of queuing every
element, so wide arrays add no allocation proportional to their length.
* docs(server): describe JSON measurement memory precisely

Sync records the canonical catalog path while the fixture created its
native backup under the /var alias on macOS, so restoration fell back to
an empty catalog; clean up held children with SIGKILL so a failed
assertion is reported instead of hanging. Also correct the offline-sync
wording: an offline sync does reapply routing.
The documented Kimi endpoint matches the predicate. Azure Responses can also have output.encrypted_content removed, so the statement that unrelated destinations keep their original include list is too broad.

An unsupervised Link Child handling a shutdown signal restores native Codex and managed Grok before releasing its listener, rechecking the served connection before each write. Service/Desktop supervision, sibling ownership, restart/recycle handoff and pending parent stop receipts preserve integrations. Shutdown rejects bound restart with `409 runtime_stopping`. Forced termination can bypass signal handlers; parent `ocx stop` restoration remains necessary. To route Codex through Home again after such a stop, start the Child (`ocx start`, or `ocx service start` for an installed service) and then run `ocx sync --restart-codex`. Starting alone does not reapply routing. A sync run while the Child is stopped still reapplies routing, which points Codex at a listener that is not running, so start the Child first.

The new paragraph repeats the recovery steps that already appear at Lines 93-97.
Line 85 says to start the Child with ocx start or ocx service start, then run ocx sync --restart-codex, and that starting alone does not reapply routing. Lines 95-97 give the same steps for an explicit stop. Two copies of this policy will drift.
The new paragraph also appears before the sentence that introduces what ocx stop does (Line 87). Readers meet the signal-shutdown details before the command description.
Keep the signal-shutdown facts here:
the owner checks
the 409 runtime_stopping result
the forced-termination caveat
Replace the recovery sentences with a pointer to the explicit-stop paragraph below. Keep the "sync while stopped points Codex at a listener that is not running" warning in one place only. Keep the translated lifecycle pages aligned with the English source.

Size the stop-fence deadline for the full C-held sync path.
The retry waits about 950 ms when every lock attempt fails immediately. A Windows ACL harden can use a 30-second budget by default, or up to 60 seconds when configured. A competing sync can therefore keep C locked past the retry window. Shutdown then refuses routing restoration and stops the listener. The proposed 10-second deadline is still shorter than one supported harden budget.
Use an elapsed-time deadline that covers the full C-held path. Update the retry fixture and structure/remote-link.md to document the deadline.

Document monthly-window retirement for pool accounts.
The public guide explains how a full monthly window blocks selection, but not that a complete pool usage reading with no monthly window retires the carried reading after a plan change. The account can then become eligible before the old reset, subject to other pool eligibility checks. Add this explanation to the public quota guidance and any maintained translations.

Restrict translated tool_search authorization to client-executed declarations.
collectTranslatedHostedToolNames authorizes the translated tool_search name for any {type: "tool_search"} declaration. It does not read execution (src/server/responses-undeclared-tool-guard.ts:208). The translated bridge then emits tool_search_call with a hard-coded execution: "client" (src/bridge/sse.ts:1118). A caller that declares execution: "server" can therefore receive a client-executed tool_search_call. The client can wait for a search that it expects the server to run.
Apply the same check in two places:
collectTranslatedHostedToolNames should authorize tool_search only when execution is "client".
src/responses/parser-tools.ts:121-125 should not expose a server-executed declaration as the client function tool_search.
Decide one behavior for each translated route. Either implement hosted search, or reject execution: "server" explicitly. Update the fixture at tests/responses/explicit-empty-tool-catalog-history.test.ts:24. It currently omits execution, so it must also state the behavior for an omitted value. Add coverage for the client and server modes.

Update collectTranslatedHostedToolNames and the declaration handling in
parser-tools.ts so server-executed tool_search declarations are not authorized
or exposed as client functions; either support hosted execution for that route
or explicitly reject server mode. Define and enforce the behavior when execution
is omitted, update the explicit-empty-tool-catalog-history fixture accordingly,
and add coverage for client and server modes.

Suppress the continuation note for local checkpoint summaries.
parseRequest adds the note when it decodes an ocx1: or ocx2: checkpoint and sees no compaction_trigger. The local path has no such trigger, so _compactionRequest remains unset. A routed non-passthrough adapter can send the note upstream, where it can prompt the model to continue unfinished work instead of producing the handoff summary. The Responses passthrough does not add the note to its upstream body.
Keep the remote _compactionRequest behavior separate. Suppress the note when the parsed input is a local checkpoint:

Reject cross-identity local compaction when its checkpoint is opaque.
The new local-checkpoint route can replace a native encrypted checkpoint with OPAQUE_COMPACTION_NOTE and still return a successful text response to the compaction prompt. Codex may then use a summary that lacks the earlier checkpoint as replacement history. Refuse this cross-identity local-checkpoint route when its history contains an unreadable native compaction item, or recover the checkpoint before sending; preserve same-identity routing.

Restore native Codex routing, catalog/history and managed Grok configuration before an unsupervised Remote Link Child releases its listener during handled-signal shutdown.
409 runtime_stopping, join accepted restart/recycle work and cancel unfired recycle timers before teardown.SQLITE_BUSY/SQLITE_LOCKEDcontention, bounded to 20 attempts with 50 ms waits; other failures stop immediately. The branch preserves the original source history and integrates dev
63de499e, retaining lidge-jun#7736's parent/API restoration, attestation, per-write ownership checks, HTTP 409 behavior and receipt settlement. Saved connection credentials remain intact.Separate runtime/sync-process regressions hold catalog and Home-settings responses across shutdown, check durable files after exit, and cover completed-sync controls, unverifiable runtimes and preservation owners. Focused serial connect checks passed 53/53 (309 assertions), and the synthetic ACL-fixture suite passed 11/11 (51 assertions); this is not native ACL acceptance.
