Summary

Account for normalized inbound JSON size before shrinking the request reservation.

  • Always measure Buffer.byteLength(JSON.stringify(parsed), "utf8"), whether or not a translator budget exists.
  • Reserve the maximum of raw, decoded, and parsed bytes, capped by the original allowance, before observing or shrinking the reservation.
  • Add normalized-number expansion regressions with and without a translator budget, and document byte accounting.

This change is scoped to three files.

Validation

Owner-reported native Windows validation used Bun 1.4.4 and isolated state:

  • Inbound-body-admission and request-decompress suites: 130 cases / 365 assertions.
  • Typecheck (2,253 files), structure/privacy/file-size checks, and whitespace checks passed.
  • The original local test:changed attempt lacked its comparison ref; it was not a pass. No full local suite is claimed.

At HEAD a943d91ea56204605b15c47c67a533bd9ead1994:

Pending acceptance

The security review could not run because of the paying account's usage limit. This is not a security pass or a reported vulnerability. Maintainer acceptance and native installed-app acceptance remain separate from the focused tests and hosted CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • HTTP request body accounting now consistently reflects the normalized JSON size after parsing, including on routes without translator budgets. This keeps reserved capacity aligned with the data the server processes, rather than the original text representation.
    • Deeply nested valid JSON requests can now be measured and accounted for without a call-stack failure, whether or not a translator budget is used.

Walkthrough

Bounded JSON parsing now measures the UTF-8 size of the parsed value after JSON serialization. Inbound body reservation accounting uses this normalized size, regardless of whether the route has a translator budget. The iterative measurement supports deeply nested JSON bodies.

Changes: Inbound body accounting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Serialized JSON measurement
src/server/json-serialized-bytes.ts, tests/usage/request-decompress.test.ts
A new iterative helper measures serialized JSON byte length. Tests compare its result with JSON.stringify and cover deeply nested, wide, and mixed values.
Normalized JSON reservation accounting
src/server/request-decompress.ts, structure/transports/byte-accounting.md, tests/server/inbound-body-admission.test.ts
readBoundedJsonRequestBody now uses the helper’s measurement unconditionally. Reservation accounting and documentation include normalized JSON bytes with or without a translator budget. Admission tests cover both cases, including deeply nested bodies.

Normalized JSON accounting adds processing work for dense requests. The change is mergeable with bounded performance awareness; any optimization must preserve reservations for expanded numeric representations.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(server): account for normalized inbound JSON" matches the main change. The raw summary shows readBoundedJsonRequestBody now always measures the serialized UTF-8 size of parsed JSON, and that size feeds the inbound body reservation. The title names the server scope and the normalized-JSON accounting fix, and it is concise. It is single-sentence, has no file list or emoji, and states the primary change from a developer's view.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 4 files. Normalized JSON byte accounting now walks the parsed value iteratively and returns the UTF-8 length JSON.stringify would produce, so deeply nested valid bodies are measured instead of throwing.
Walk containers with one cursor frame each instead of queuing every
element, so wide arrays add no allocation proportional to their length.

Nitpick Measure the unconditional normalized-size walk before changing it.

Measure the unconditional normalized-size walk before changing it.

readBoundedJsonRequestBody now runs serializedJsonByteLength(parsed) after every JSON.parse (src/server/request-decompress.ts:339-342), including requests with no translator budget. The walk calls JSON.stringify for each primitive and each object key (src/server/json-serialized-bytes.ts:13-44), so its cost depends on element count as well as byte length. The body is capped at maxBytes before parsing, so the cost is bounded by the configured limit.

In a standalone Node v24.22.1 probe of the same walk logic on a 22.3 MB dense JSON body, JSON.parse took 124.2 ms and the walk took 360.7 ms. Bun and bodies near the default 256 MiB limit were not measured. Measure the walk under Bun on a dense body near maxBytes before deciding whether it needs optimization.

Do not skip the walk when decoded.byteLength already fits the reservation. Numeric normalization can make the serialized size larger than the decoded size. For example, 1e20 decodes to 4 bytes and serializes to 21 bytes. The test retains normalized JSON bytes with translator budget in tests/server/inbound-body-admission.test.ts requires the 21-byte reservation in both normalized modes.

A cheaper check would need a numeric-expansion bound that detects every literal form that can serialize longer than its source. That bound is not yet established. If one is added, test it against the exact serializedJsonByteLength result for numeric edge cases, and keep the exact walk for inputs the bound cannot rule out.

Measure the cost of serializedJsonByteLength in readBoundedJsonRequestBody under
Bun using a dense JSON body near maxBytes before changing the walk. Keep the
exact normalized-size calculation for all requests, including those whose
decoded byte length fits the reservation; any proposed shortcut must first
establish a bound that detects every numeric expansion and be verified against
serializedJsonByteLength for numeric edge cases.

Maintainer integration into dev (account lidge-jun) at head 6d3450c70f60e9fd580d3dea9060b64c1c932572.

  • The branch merges dev f7c2d3211; no file it changes was touched by later dev commits. Exact-head required CI passed with full shards (ci:full): ci, enforce-target, hygiene, test 1/4–4/4.
  • Maintainer follow-up commits on this branch made the parsed-size measurement non-recursive (a valid 500,000-deep body no longer throws) and bounded its memory by depth rather than width; the regressions fail without them.
  • Independent review (gpt-6.1-terra, high): round 1 found the width-memory issue, round 2 passed, and a fresh final security review passed. Focused request-decompress and inbound-body-admission tests: 137 pass, 0 fail.
  • No unresolved threads or changes-requested reviews.

Thanks for the fix.
