What

The usage meters show each limit's pace: how fast it is being used, and whether that pace reaches the limit before it resets.

  • Bar marker. A 2px mark sits where an even pace would be by now. In the default used mode, a fill past the mark is ahead of pace. When the meters count what is left, a fill short of the mark is ahead of pace.
  • Rate line. Under the bar, the rate so far: 15%/h for a session or a day, 18%/day for a week or a month.
  • Run-out time. If that rate reaches 100% before the reset, the line adds Runs out in 2d 1h in --status-blocked.
  • Glance. A chip whose limit runs out before its reset turns its hairline red while its share is still low. The strip's label/title says when, e.g. Claude · me@example.com 63% (Runs out in 2d 1h), so the cue is not color-only.

How

  • Protocol. UsageWindow gains starts_at: string | null, the time the window began. It is set only where the provider states the window's start or length:
    • Claude: five_hour is 5h and seven_day* is 7d, so starts_at = reset minus that length.
    • Codex: limit_window_seconds.
    • Grok: currentPeriod.start.
    • Everything else is null: Cursor, Copilot, Antigravity, and OpenCode's rolling, weekly and monthly windows. A name like gemini-weekly gives a length, but not whether its reset ends a fixed window or refills a bucket, and a wrong start would give a wrong pace nobody can see.
  • Calculation. windowPace is pure and stateless; nothing is stored between polls.
    • Inputs. It uses the share used, the window's start and reset, and the provider's checked_at. The share is measured at the time it was read, not at the time it is shown. Otherwise, numbers kept while a provider answers 429 would look slower by the hour and hide the warning.
    • No pace before 5%. It returns no pace until 5% of the window has gone by, because earlier than that one burst is not a rate.
    • No pace for these windows: a start in the future (clock skew), a window that has already reset, or a window with no starts_at.
    • No run-out time at 0% or 100% used.
  • Clock. The strip now keeps the clock it already had for the popover while usage is shown. A countdown or run-out warning on a closed strip therefore moves on between identical reports.

Tests

  • server/usage.test.ts: starts_at for Claude, Codex and Grok, and null for the rest.

  • src/lib/usage.test.ts covers:

    • the pace and run-out math, including a run-out after the reset;
    • numbers read 3h ago, measured at their read time;
    • the 5% guard, a reset already past, an unknown start, 0% and 100% used;
    • the <0.1% rate.
  • scripts/usage-regression.ts (Playwright) covers:

    • the strip label with run-out times;
    • is-fast chips;
    • four pace markers and their rate lines;
    • the marker position in both used and left mode.

The staged report is now built when it is requested, so its times and paces hold however late in the run the check comes.

bun run typecheck ✓
bun run generate:types --check ✓
bun scripts/ci-tests.ts unit 1458 pass, 0 fail
bun scripts/ui-regression.ts 76 PASS (macOS, Chrome)

Usage window start times
shared/protocol.ts, server/usage.ts, server/usage.test.ts, site/demo/transport.ts
UsageWindow now has a nullable starts_at field. Provider adapters derive or report start times where possible and use null otherwise. Tests and demo usage data include the field.
Pace calculation and formatting
src/lib/usage.ts, src/lib/usage.test.ts
windowPace calculates usage rate and projected run-out time when window timing and elapsed time permit. formatRate formats hourly or daily rates. Tests cover valid calculations and cases that return no pace.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8efca

The reviewed demo data produces coherent pace estimates, and no concrete user-facing or operational regression is established. No specific issue remains to block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6a4a9

The change is an additive, display-only extension of the existing usage reporting flow. The inspected changes do not introduce new privileges, provider access, or quota-enforcement behavior. No introduced security concern was substantiated, but broader access-control and deployment context was not available.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure change is additional timing metadata for the locally signed-in provider accounts already represented in the usage response. No expanded account set, credential disclosure, or privileged operation was identified in the inspected producer-to-display flow; broader endpoint exposure depends on access controls outside this assessment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider-derived timing values cross the existing server-to-client data boundary and terminate in numeric calculations and meter presentation. The inspected new consumers do not use starts_at to select credentials, authorize operations, or enforce quotas.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Provider-read exceptions remain contained by the existing per-account failure handling. Concurrent report calls retain their existing serialization and cleanup behavior; the new start metadata does not alter those transitions or account backoff ownership.

The usage meters mark on each bar where an even pace would be by now,
give the rate so far (15%/h for a session, 18%/day for a week), and say
"Runs out in 2d 1h" in the blocked color when that rate reaches the
limit before the reset. A chip whose limit runs out early turns its
hairline red, and the strip's label says when.

UsageWindow gains starts_at, set only where the provider states the
window's start or length: Claude's five_hour and seven_day* keys, Codex's
limit_window_seconds, and Grok's period start. The pace is computed on
the client, stateless, measured at the provider's checked_at so numbers
kept through a 429 do not look slower by the hour, and only from 5% of
the window on.

Review: #513 feat(usage): show each limit's pace and when it runs out before its reset

Reviewed at 6a4a9f3 (3 commits on 998c577), against v0.4.0 (aca94ee) and main (f8f09d1).

Summary

Thanks for this, it is a well-scoped, independent PR. It adds starts_at to UsageWindow, fills it
only where the provider states the window's start or length (Claude, Codex, Grok), and derives a
pace client-side in a pure windowPace. The math is careful and the guards are the right ones.
I found no crash and no wrong number. There are two things to fix before merge (a changelog
placement that goes wrong on merge, and the demo fixture), and one behaviour worth a decision
(the warning disappears exactly when the projection says the limit is already gone).

Failing scenarios

1. After merging into current main, the changelog entry lands under the released 0.4.0

  • Where: CHANGELOG.md:39-45 (the entry, placed after the #508 line).
  • Trigger: main has cut ## [0.4.0] - 2026-10-08 since the branch point, and the #508 line this
entry follows is now inside that release. Git merges the file without a conflict.
  • Effect: in the merge result the entry sits at line 65-71, under ## [0.4.0] -> ### Added.
    ## [Unreleased] on main currently holds only ### Fixed. The 0.4.0 notes would then claim a
feature that tag does not contain, and the next release would not mention it.
  • Verified: git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main HEAD, then grep -n '^## \|pull/513' on the
    merged CHANGELOG.md shows 8:## [Unreleased], 15:## [0.4.0] - 2026-10-08, 71: ...pull/513.
  • Fix: rebase on main and move the entry to a new ### Added under ## [Unreleased]. The entry
text and the #513 link are correct as written.

2. The run-out warning disappears once the projected time has passed

  • Where: src/components/UsageMeters.tsx:35-38 (runsOutText), with src/lib/usage.ts:84-87
(formatResetIn returns null for a time that is not in the future) and src/lib/usage.ts:120-121.
  • Trigger: windowPace measures the pace at checked_at, so runsOutAt can be earlier than the
browser's now. This happens (a) while a provider answers 429 and the server keeps the last
numbers, and (b) between two server reads (FRESH_MS is 5 minutes) whenever the limit was
projected to run out within that gap.
  • Effect: the row keeps its rate ("50%/h") but loses "Runs out in ...", the chip loses is-fast
and the strip label loses its parenthesis. The cue goes away at the moment the projection is at
its worst, and the limit is below 80% so is-high does not take over.
  • Verified with a scratch test against this branch: a session from -4h to +1h, 50% used, read 3h
ago gives runsOutAt 2h in the past and formatResetIn(...) === null; a fresh read of 80% used
2h into a 5h session gives "30m", and null 31 minutes later with the same report.
  • The PR's own unit test asserts the first half of this (runsOutAt: at(-2)), so the intent of
keeping the projection for stale numbers is there; it just does not reach the UI.
  • Suggestion: treat a projection at or before now as "at this pace, already out" (keep is-fast
and show a short text), or clamp it to the present. Not a blocker: nothing shown is wrong, a
    warning is missing.

3. The demo's usage fixture does not carry starts_at

  • Where: site/demo/transport.ts:279-299 (not touched by this PR), against
shared/protocol.ts:160 where the field is required.
  • Trigger: open Subscription usage in the demo.
  • Effect: no pace mark, rate or run-out text anywhere in the demo, so the feature is not shown on
the site that redeploys on every push to main. It does not crash: with starts_at undefined
windowPace returns null (Date.parse(undefined) is NaN and the !(elapsed >= MIN_ELAPSED)
guard catches it), verified in the scratch test.
  • Also verified: typechecking that file by hand reports 13 TS2741: Property 'starts_at' is missing errors. bun run typecheck passes only because site/ is outside the typecheck.
  • Fix: add starts_at to the fixture, as scripts/usage-regression.ts does (at(2.4 - 5),
at(78 - 168), null for Cursor and OpenCode). One fast week there would show the warning too.

Rule violations

  • CONTRIBUTING.md, "Demo": "A feature meant to show there needs an answer in
    site/demo/transport.ts". See scenario 3.
  • AGENTS.md, "Changing a contract": HTTP shapes change through shared/protocol.ts on both sides.
Server and client are both updated and server/usage.test.ts covers every provider; the demo
transport is the third consumer of that shape and was missed. server/api.contract.test.ts has
no assertion on starts_at; the unit tests cover the field well, so I would not ask for more.
  • No other violation found: component CSS uses tokens only (--status-blocked, --border-strong,
--text-strong, --text-dim, --fs-2xs, all defined in src/styles.css), no color literal, no
!important, no new animation; the three new t() keys are string literals with ko, ja and zh
entries and i18n.test.ts passes; DESIGN.md describes the chip rule and the popover mark with
the same tokens the CSS uses; wire field is snake_case.

Smaller notes

  • Protocol compatibility: starts_at is required and non-optional. Usage is read only from the
app's own server (no per-machine routing in useUsage), so an older remote peer never supplies
this shape. A payload without the field is still handled as "no pace" (see scenario 3), which is
a good property; a one-line comment on windowPace saying so would keep it from being lost.
  • src/components/UsageMeters.tsx:114-119: the 30 s clock now runs whenever usage is shown, not
only while the popover is open, and re-renders the strip each tick. Cheap, and it is what keeps a
closed strip's warning current. open in the dependency list restarts the interval on every
toggle; that is what refreshes now on open, so a short comment would help the next reader.
  • src/components/UsageMeters.tsx:81: the marker is an empty <i> inside role="meter". A
<span aria-hidden="true"> would say what it is.
  • Accessibility: the chip's red hairline is color-only on the chip itself, but the strip's
aria-label and title carry "(Runs out in ...)" and the popover row has the text, so the cue is
not color-only overall. On touch there is no title; the popover is one tap away, which seems
    fine.
  • src/lib/usage.ts:95: just past the 5% guard a session can show a very high rate. 30% used 16
minutes into a 5-hour session reads "115%/h, runs out in 37m" (scratch test). That is correct
arithmetic and arguably the point; mentioning it in case a floor on elapsed time for sessions was
    considered.
  • Window lengths: five_hour -> 5 h, seven_day, seven_day_opus, seven_day_sonnet -> 7 d
    (server/usage.ts:220-221, 316-319), Codex from limit_window_seconds, Grok from
currentPeriod.start; the scoped weekly limits read from Claude's limits array stay null. All
as described. Whether Claude's resets_at - 5h is exactly when the session began is an
assumption about the provider that I could not check (unverified).
  • Clock skew: the pace itself uses the server's checked_at and provider times, so it does not
depend on the browser clock; only "already reset" (now >= end) and the countdown text do. A
start in the future and an inverted window both give null (scratch test).
  • CHANGELOG: the entry links #513 in full. Per CONTRIBUTING the link and credit are the
maintainer's to add, so nothing is owed here; the maintainer will append by @kilhyeonjun at
release. The second and third commits only fix up the first, which the squash merge folds away.

What is good

  • windowPace is pure, stateless and measured at read time, with the reason written down. The
guards cover unknown start, start in the future, reset already past, inverted window, 0% and
100% used, and too early in the window.
  • starts_at is left null wherever a start would be a guess (Cursor, Copilot, Antigravity,
OpenCode, Claude's scoped limits), with the reasoning in a comment. A wrong pace nobody can see
    would be worse than none.
  • The marker flips correctly when the meters count what is left, and the regression script checks
    both positions.
  • The regression fixture is now built per request, so its times hold however late the check runs.
  • Unit tests assert the exact projected time, the rate formatting including "<0.1%", and each
    provider's starts_at.

Merge status

  • GitHub: MERGEABLE, state BEHIND. git merge-tree is clean on v0.4.0 (aca94ee) and on main
    (f8f09d1).
  • main since 998c577 touched scripts/usage-regression.ts (#562, openSettingsPage calls) and
site/demo/transport.ts (#560, an updates route). Neither overlaps semantically: the merged
script keeps both the report() builder and the openSettingsPage calls. No change on main to
    server/usage.ts, src/lib/usage.ts, UsageMeters.* or shared/protocol.ts.
  • A clean merge still misplaces the changelog entry (scenario 1), so a rebase is needed.
  • CI: only CodeRabbit has reported on the PR; the required "Fast checks" and "Integration and
    browser" checks have not run.

Tests run (at 6a4a9f3)

  • bun install: ok.
  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/usage.test.ts ./src/lib/usage.test.ts ./src/lib/i18n.test.ts:
    79 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun run typecheck: no errors.
  • bun run check fast at this head (6a4a9f3): exit 0. Workflow syntax, generated types fresh, typecheck and build all ok; unit tests 1643 pass, 4 skip, 0 fail.
  • scripts/usage-regression.ts only exports checkUsageMeters, so I ran its caller on the isolated
herdr after the build: bun run check run bun scripts/ui-regression.ts, exit 0, 79 PASS lines,
including "PASS plan meters beside Settings: ...". This is the branch as pushed, not merged with
    main's openSettingsPage change.
  • Scratch probes (windowPace edge cases, demo fixture typecheck, merged changelog): as quoted above;
    scratch files removed.

Re-check against v0.4.2 (b82584d). The head is still 6a4a9f3, the commit my review of 2026-10-07 covered, so this covers only what main changed since then. All runs below were made on a local throwaway merge of origin/main into this branch; nothing was pushed.

Merge with main

  • origin/main merges without conflicts.

Tests on the merged checkout

  • bun run check fast: passes (workflow syntax, generated types, typecheck, build, unit tests).
  • scripts/usage-regression.ts through bun run check run: passes.

Still open from the earlier review

  1. Changelog placement. After the merge the entry sits at CHANGELOG.md:309-315, inside the released ## [0.4.0] section (v0.4.1 and v0.4.2 shipped since). It belongs under ## [Unreleased] (line 8).
  2. Demo has no pace. site/demo/fixtures.ts and site/demo/transport.ts still carry no starts_at, so the demo at herdrweb.dev shows no pace mark or run-out time for any window.
  3. The run-out warning disappears once the projected time has passed (runsOutText in src/components/UsageMeters.tsx): unchanged.

For the owner

  • Whether the warning should stay (for example as "Ran out" or the last projection) once runsOutAt is earlier than now, or go away as it does now.
  • Nothing in main conflicts with this PR; the two items above are what stands between it and a merge.

## Change

The usage meters' pace (#513: the mark of an even pace on each bar, the
rate under it, "Runs out in …" and the chip's red hairline for a low
share) becomes a setting, **Settings → Subscription usage → Show pace**,
off by default. With it off the meters read as they did before #513;
with it on, as #513 made them.

#513 is not released yet, so nobody loses anything: this decides how it
first ships.

- `usagePace` in `src/lib/settings.ts` (default `false`), read by
`UsageMeters` in the three places the pace showed: the chip's hairline,
the popover's rows, and the strip's label.
- The row sits under **Limit shown**, shown only while **Show plan
limits** is on, with Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Turkish text.
- No changelog change here: the release PR (#833) words #513's entry
with the setting.

## Validation

- `bun run typecheck`: pass. `settings.test.ts`, `i18n.test.ts`,
`usage.test.ts`: 85 pass.
- `scripts/usage-regression.ts` (run through its exported check against
a real server and Chrome): pass. New: with plan limits on and the pace
not chosen, the strip's label has no "Runs out", no chip is `is-fast`,
and the popover has no mark or rate; turning **Show pace** on brings
them, and the existing pace checks run from there.
- `scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts`: 13 PASS (the Subscription
usage page with its new row fits 390px and 320px phones in en, ko, ja
and zh).

## Release

Client-side only.
devswha added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 11, 2026
## Change

Release 0.4.7, from main at 80ca9bb (47 PRs since v0.4.6).

- `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`: 0.4.7.
- CHANGELOG: `[Unreleased]` becomes `[0.4.7] - 2026-10-12`, with the
compare links.
- #513's entry moves out of the 0.4.0 section, where its branch's merge
left it, and gets its credit; it says the pace is a setting, off by
default (#834).
- A Maintenance section covers the PRs that had no entry: #743, #756,
#767, #795, #805, #810, #813, #821, #826, #831.
- The note under the Hermes entry that asked for a runtime bump at
release now says what a remote PC needs.
- `release-summaries.json`: 0.4.7 in en/ko/ja/zh/tr (6 new, 6 improved,
5 fixed). The Turkish lines are not checked by a native speaker.
- `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` 25 -> 26. Since v0.4.5's runtime the bridge
gained Hermes transcripts (#604), conversation pushes (#689) and
Grok/Antigravity activity (#816), so `remote-v26` is published before
the app release.

Not in this release: #606.

## Validation

- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.7` renders the summaries and the
full changelog (235 lines).
- `bun run typecheck` and `bun run build`: pass.
- `TMPDIR=/tmp bun run test:unit`: one failure, `server/voice.test.ts`
("audio.webm" vs "clip.webm"), which fails the same way on unmodified
`main` on this Mac (Bun 1.4.0); CI runs Bun 1.4.2.
- Every PR merged since v0.4.6 was checked against the changelog
section: all 47 are linked.

## Release

After this merges and its CI on `main` passes: push `remote-v26`, wait
for its release, then run the Release workflow with `0.4.7`.
