Change

Install-catalog fixes from real installs on the maintainer's Linux PC (lane agents-install). No install command changed, so APPROVED_COMMANDS and its equality test are unchanged.

  1. Oh My Pi, Linux and macOS: curl -fsSL https://omp.sh/install | sh gets the known issue the Windows command already had. It stops while an older Bun (before 1.4.4) is on PATH; run bun upgrade first. It was seen on Linux with Bun 1.4.3; macOS runs the same script.

  2. Oh My Pi min_version: left at null on purpose. The request was 18.10 for approval cards. Ovis still makes approval cards from omp's older Approve/Deny menu when the 18.10.4 approval panel is not there (parseOmpApproval in server/dialogs/omp.ts). A floor of 18.10 would mark omp 18.8.7 as too old and tell users approval cards need it, which isn't true. The only source for 18.10 was the install report's note. I can add a floor if there's a recording of an omp version without cards.

  3. Devin: its installer ends with its own sign-in (devin setup, run unconditionally by install.sh, with no option to skip it). Without a browser, that sign-in either stops at "Login canceled" and exits 1, or waits until Ctrl+C; on the maintainer's PC it hung for more than 5 minutes. The known issue now says both, and that Devin is installed either way. Its sign-in step is devin auth login, which the catalog already lists as the separate sign-in.

  4. OpenCode: an after-install note says its macOS/Linux installer puts ~/.opencode/bin first on PATH in the shell's startup file. A user's own opencode wrapper elsewhere (in ~/.local/bin) then no longer runs. The vendor script's --no-modify-path would avoid it, but it's not part of the approved command.

  5. Copilot: sign_in.command is ["copilot", "login"] (checked with copilot login --help).

  6. kiro-cli: not added. Ovis has no Kiro agent kind to start:

    • it isn't in SUPPORTED_AGENT_KINDS or the guide's Supported agents;
    • herdr's schema names no kiro kind;
    • only an icon exists.

    The catalog's ids are agent kinds Ovis runs, so an entry would offer to install something Ovis then can't start.

  7. Hermes: hermes --version loads the whole agent. It took 2.3 to 6.7 s here, past the 5 s default, so the first catalog read showed it with version_error: "timeout".

    • A catalog entry can now set detect.version_timeout_ms. The shape test requires it to be above 5 s and at most 30 s.
    • Hermes gets 15 s.
    • AgentDetector passes the entry's limit, or its own default, to the version run.

Trade-off

GET /api/agent-catalog waits for every agent's version flag, so on a PC with Hermes installed its first read can now take up to 15 s instead of 5. Later reads come from the cache.

Validation

  • Fail-first: a test with an injected version runner records the limit each probe gets, without running anything. An entry with its own limit got the detector's default before this change.
  • The test also checks that the Hermes entry sets a limit above 7 s.
  • The old hang test moved from Hermes to a gjc stub, so the detector's short default still applies there.
  • shared/agent-catalog.test.ts (shape, APPROVED_COMMANDS equality, clean-PC runs) passes, as do the detector and route tests and scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts.
  • bun run check fast is green.
  • An omo code review first blocked the omp min_version (item 2), and its other points are fixed:
    • the OpenCode note moved from a known issue to after-install;
    • the Detection docs mention the limit;
    • the hermes test stub no longer hangs;
    • the limit test no longer pins Hermes's number.

Merging with #2375

git merge-tree shows text conflicts with #2375 (fix/catalog-broken-version, head 86118d2) in three files:

  • server/agent-catalog-detect.ts: both change the version-run call. Here it is the limit; there it is the PATH, so the merged call passes both.
  • shared/protocol.ts: combine the two wordings of the /api/agent-catalog note.
  • server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts: keep both new tests.

Whichever merges second gets main merged in, and I'll resolve it then.

- Oh My Pi: its Linux and macOS installer also stops while an older Bun
  (before 1.4.4) is on PATH, as the Windows one does. It gets no
  min_version: Ovis still reads the Approve/Deny menu of omp before
  18.10.4's approval panel (parseOmpApproval), so approval cards work
  on older versions too.
- Devin: its installer ends with its own sign-in (devin setup), which
  may wait until Ctrl+C with no browser; Devin is installed either way,
  and devin auth login is the sign-in step.
- OpenCode: after install, a note that its macOS and Linux installer
  puts ~/.opencode/bin first on PATH in the shell's startup file, ahead
  of an opencode wrapper of the user's own.
- Copilot: its sign-in command, copilot login.
- Hermes: its version flag takes 2.3 to 6.7 s on a busy PC, past the
  5 s default, so detection showed it without a version. A catalog entry
  may now set detect.version_timeout_ms (above 5 s, at most 30 s);
  Hermes gets 15 s.

No install command changed, so APPROVED_COMMANDS is unchanged.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Agent catalog entries can allow longer version checks, up to 30 seconds; checks otherwise use a 5-second limit.
    • Hermes is given additional time to report its version, so it can remain visible in the catalog.
  • Documentation
    • Updated installation guidance covers sign-in steps and installer behavior for Devin, Copilot, OpenCode, and Oh My Pi.

The agent catalog now supports per-agent version-check timeouts. It also updates installation and sign-in notes for Oh My Pi, Devin, OpenCode, and Copilot, and sets a longer timeout for Hermes.

Changes: Agent Catalog

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-agent version-check timeouts
shared/agent-catalog.ts, server/agent-catalog-detect.ts, shared/agent-catalog.test.ts, server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts, docs/agent-catalog.md, shared/protocol.ts
Catalog entries can set a version-check timeout between 5,001 and 30,000 ms. The detector uses that value when set and otherwise uses its default. Tests cover timeout selection and retry behavior; documentation describes the limits.
Agent installation and sign-in notes
shared/agent-catalog.ts, changelog.d/catalog-install-findings.md
The catalog updates installation and sign-in notes for Devin, Copilot, OpenCode, and Oh My Pi. The changelog records these findings and Hermes’s longer version check.

The hang test moved to a gjc stub kept its wall-clock bound; the
detector's own answer ("timeout" at its 300 ms limit) already says the
probe was ended, so the elapsed-time assertion goes.

Merging 1035f69. Install-catalog findings from real installs on the maintainer's Linux PC (no install command changed, so APPROVED_COMMANDS is unchanged): Oh My Pi's Linux/macOS known issue about an older Bun; Devin's installer ending in its own sign-in (Login canceled / waits for Ctrl+C, installed either way, sign in with devin auth login); OpenCode's installer putting ~/.opencode/bin first on PATH; Copilot's sign-in command copilot login; and a per-entry detect.version_timeout_ms (above 5 s, at most 30 s, pinned by the shape test), with Hermes at 15 s since its --version loads the whole agent (2.3-6.7 s here). omp's min_version stays null on purpose and kiro-cli is not added (no Kiro agent kind to start). Trade-off: on a PC with Hermes the catalog's first read can take up to 15 s; later reads come from the cache. Reviewed by the merge pass. Merged with main after #2375: the version run keeps both the PATH the agent was found on (#2375) and the entry's own timeout. CodeRabbit's two Minors are noted, not changed: the changelog wording (name devin setup, say the sign-in may wait, "OpenCode puts") goes into the 0.4.21 fold, and copilot login needs Copilot CLI 0.0.401+ (fresh installs have it; an older one can still use /login inside Copilot).

## What

The Ovis server now reads the agent catalog once in the background when
it starts, so the first `GET /api/agent-catalog` is served from
`AgentDetector`'s cache instead of waiting for every agent's
`--version`.

- `createServer`'s instance gets `warmAgentCatalog()`: one
`agentCatalogFor(...)` on the server's own detector, not awaited, errors
logged (`agent catalog warm-up failed: …`) and never thrown.
- Only the two real entrypoints call it: `server/index.ts`'s main start,
and `server/remote-entry.ts` after the bridge has registered. Test and
script servers never warm, so they never run real version commands.
- `stop()` now closes the detector. Running version process groups are
killed, and queued reads settle without launching anything.
- The version spawn and its `taskkill` get `windowsHide: true`, like the
other background spawns in `server/`.

No route, response or contract change. This touches `server/` only.

## Why

Measured on the maintainer's PC with Hermes installed:
- The first catalog answer after a start took 3.1 s; the next ones took
3 ms.
- Cold, `hermes --version` alone takes 7.4 s, and its
`version_timeout_ms` is 15 s since #2382.

The first-run setup guide (#2332) opens on that first answer ("Checking
this PC…"), so one slow assistant held the whole first screen.

Cost:
- Each real start now runs the installed agents' version commands, at
most four at a time (`PARALLEL_RUNS`), plus a login-shell PATH lookup
when it is needed.
- Listening never waits for them.
- A remote bridge pays the same once it is registered. Its catalog is
proxied to other PCs, so that is where the first answer matters too.

## Tests

`server/agent-catalog-routes.test.ts`:
- The first GET after a warm start is served from the warm cache with
one version run in total, including a GET that arrives while the warm
probe is still held.
- A failed warm-up is logged with its message, and the server keeps
serving.
- A version probe still held when `stop()` runs is ended.

The waits are deadline-bounded signals, with no fixed sleeps. The tests
use temporary state and `port: 0`.

`bun run check fast` is green (8763 pass, 0 fail).

## Reviews

**omo-native-code-reviewer.** Round 1 raised two MEDIUMs:
- The warm-up was on by default for any non-zero port, so test children
and scripts would have run real `--version` commands. It is now
explicit.
- The version commands had no `windowsHide`. Added.

Round 2 approved, with no HIGH or MEDIUM.

**Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh).** Round 1 raised two MEDIUMs:
- The remote bridge warmed before registering, which a test reaches. It
now warms after registering.
- Probes outlived `stop()`. `close()` now ends them.

Round 2 found no HIGH or MEDIUM. One LOW is left: the login-shell PATH
lookup is not cancelled by `stop()`. It ends on its own timeout, and the
process exits on stop anyway.

## Release 0.4.21

The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
now re-folded on main `1ef6ea329108a0985b823e8235b03daddcd0a5f4` after
the owner held 0.4.21 for more work. The merge pass reported the 0.4.21
queue empty.

**Do not merge yet:** the owner judges the final build before release.
No tag and no Release run from this PR's author.

- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.21 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.21 2026-10-30`
folded 63 fragments into the 2026-10-30 section of `CHANGELOG.md` (71
entries), linked their PRs and deleted the fragments; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`.
- `by @login` on every outside contributor's PR link: #2361 @eddieparc,
#2333 @IdrisGit, #2355 @imurfutur3, #2341 @sulthonzh, #2359 @YuuuXie,
#2377 @IdrisGit, #2269 @CharleoYang, #2405 @jpcarranza94, #2414
@homebodify, #2417 @cheol-95, #2418 @eddieparc, #2435 @cheol-95.
- Two outside PRs had no fragment and got an entry by hand: #2341
(OpenCode background commands, Added) and #2359 (installer test timing,
Maintenance).
- Issue reporters are credited in their entries: @blaker3115-Agri
(#1488), @Hyd3-14 (#2026), @osamahbeig (#2343), @Shunamxiao (#2329),
@matiemer (#2362), @kilhyeonjun (#2344), @eddieparc (#2360), @Ploppy3
(#2236), @sulthonzh (#2340), @WOULDU-pres (#2056), @odfalik (#2038),
@aNNdii (#511), @Noobear (#2281, fixed by #2424); #2435 fixes
@cheol-95's own #2434.
- Two fragments ran past the changelog's width (#2418, #2269); their
entries are re-wrapped, words unchanged. #2382's entry reads "OpenCode's
installer puts its folder first" (reviewed earlier on this PR).
- Maintainer PRs without a fragment and without a user-facing change
have no entry: #2353 (check tool), #2371 (guide docs), #2396 and #2397
(tests), #2403 and #2433 (server and client transport seams, no
behaviour change), #2437 (test-only fix for #2435's check). #2438's own
entry (the sidebar selection marked by its fill again) is dropped: the
stroke #2352 added never shipped, so users see no change; #2352's entry
keeps only the Windows high-contrast Highlight bar.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines. Since the first review: New lists the in-browser
Claude Code / Codex sign-in (#2428) in place of the tab/workspace
shortcut line; Improved lists Settings → Agents (#2427) in place of the
sidebar fold line; Fixed lists the Codex wrong-session fix (#2426,
#2430) in place of the phone screenshot paste line. The Artifacts and
Claude status-line lines keep their reviewed wording (turned on in
Settings). Not in 0.4.21: #2420 (Codex chat behind Kiro), #2065 (Portal
sign-in) and #2436 (relay foundations) stay open for a later release.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 39 to 40 because
the bundle inputs (`server/`, `shared/`, `patches/`) changed since
remote-v39. After merge: push `remote-v40` on the merged commit and wait
for the Remote PC bundles workflow before running Release.
- **iOS:** `CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` stays 3 (#2370 changed
`Info.plist`; build 3 is not known to be uploaded yet).

## Validation

- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.20`: "Release 0.4.21:
remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order."
- `dori heavy … bun run check fast` on this branch: workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests all ok. Unit:
9166 pass, 0 fail, 36 skip in 591 files.
- Every PR in `v0.4.20..main` was pre-run for the owner's hands-on guide
on isolated copies (own herdr session, fresh state, never the owner's
live session). Items that need a real device (iPhone tap dictation
#2370, dictation keyboards #2386, the installed desktop app's title-bar
overlay #2381) are left for the owner's final check.

This is a release-metadata PR: it changes no code path. Per the release
steps, merge it after CI and the owner's go, then push `remote-v40`,
wait for its bundles, and run Release with `0.4.21`.
