feat(composer): Claude's five-hour and weekly limits from its status line, and omp's context - #2269
The composer's subscription chip showed nothing for Claude on a machine where Claude Code itself ran fine, and omp's context ring had no percentage at all.
The quota came from GET https://api.anthropic.com/api/oauth/usage. From a blocked network that endpoint answers 403 {"error":{"message":"Request not allowed"}} — an unauthenticated /v1/messages answers 403 too, so the block is at the edge, not the token. server/usage.ts maps both 401 and 403 to problem: "expired", so the chip hid itself and said "expired" while the plan was fine. Live before: GET /api/usage → claude plan=max problem=expired windows=[].
omp's transcript reports the tokens a request filled but never names the window (metadata.context.window === null), so ContextRing had no percent — although omp's own status bar prints both numbers (◫ 26.5%/1M).
Root cause
server/usage.ts:314 (the Anthropic request) is the only source of Claude's windows, and server/conversation-metadata.ts:123 leaves omp's window unknown. Both figures already exist locally; neither was read.
建议修法(为什么是这个修法)
Read what Claude Code and omp already draw, instead of asking a network the machine may not be allowed to reach:
Claude. Its status line command receives a payload on stdin that contains exactly the numbers the CLI shows (rate_limits.five_hour.used_percentage, rate_limits.seven_day.used_percentage, resets_at in epoch seconds, context_window.used_percentage). Nothing else exposes them: they are not in the transcript, and the transcript's only quota record is an error. The payload exists only on that command's stdin, so a tee wraps the existing command — scripts/statusline-tee.sh writes ~/.herdr/statusline-last.json and then runs the previous command unchanged, so the drawn line is byte-identical. scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts installs it idempotently and keeps the previous command in ~/.herdr/statusline-original.json (--restore puts it back).
omp. Its status bar is the only place both numbers appear. server/omp-status.ts reads the last ◫ x%/1M row, with a 5 s cache so a chat push does not cost a screen read each.
The endpoint stays as the fallback for a machine that has not installed the tee, so nothing regresses there.
Rejected: proxying the request (needs infrastructure the app cannot assume, and still fails a 403); reading the statusline payload by running a command per poll (the payload is pushed, not pullable).
Change
server/statusline.ts (new): parse the payload — both windows with their resets, model, session_id, context_window; a payload older than STALE_MS (6 h, the five-hour window's own length) is not a reading.
server/usage.ts: claude.read() returns the statusline's windows when a payload exists, and only asks the endpoint when there is none. The plan comes from the sign-in.
server/omp-status.ts (new): ◫ <percent>%/<size> → {used, window}; last match wins; null when the bar is not drawn.
server/pane-routes.ts: an omp-transcript conversation merges that context into metadata.context, and names it in the ETag (-ctx<used>:<window>) so a 304 cannot freeze the figure.
src/components/Composer.tsx: the chip names both plan-wide windows (5h 17% · wk 64% with usageCount: "left" meaning 83%/36%) instead of the session alone, and shows for a local Claude pane without the usage hub being switched on (its source is a local file now, not a request).
scripts/statusline-tee.sh, scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts (new): the install and its rollback.
Evidence
bun test server/statusline.test.ts server/omp-status.test.ts server/usage.test.ts → 83 pass, 0 fail. The usage case asserts requests is empty and the windows come from the file.
bun run typecheck → 0 errors (this branch, resolved onto main).
typecheck 0;受影响 6 个测试文件 109 pass / 0 fail;新增 14 条回归在修复前实现上实测为红(如 ompScreenContext > requires a stable bottom viewport…、providers > falls back to the Claude endpoint when every captured usage window has reset)
A machine without the tee installed still falls back to the endpoint, which on a blocked network still shows expired; this PR does not change that path's label (403 → expired remains, and splitting 401/403 was left out of scope).
The statusline payload is per machine, not per pane. Round 3 binds the captured payload to the account that rendered it (scripts/statusline-capture.ts), so a second account's reading falls back to its endpoint instead of being relabelled; a machine whose capture predates that binding still has no account to match.
pi's context was not added (its footer shape is not evidenced here); only omp-transcript is read.
…line, and omp's context
The quota used to come from https://api.anthropic.com/api/oauth/usage. That endpoint answers
403 from a blocked network, and the reader mapped 401/403 to `expired`, so the composer showed
nothing on a machine where Claude Code itself was working fine.
Read what Claude Code already knows instead:
- scripts/statusline-tee.sh is wrapped into Claude's statusLine command (installed and undone by
scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts, idempotent, previous command kept in
~/.herdr/statusline-original.json). It writes the payload to ~/.herdr/statusline-last.json and
then runs the status line exactly as before, so the drawn line is unchanged.
- server/statusline.ts reads it: rate_limits.five_hour / seven_day `used_percentage` + `resets_at`
(epoch seconds) and context_window.used_percentage. A payload older than the five-hour window is
not a reading.
- usage.ts's claude provider prefers that payload and only falls back to the endpoint when there is
none — no token, no request, nothing to proxy. Test: windows from the file with `requests` empty.
Beside the model, the chip now names both plan-wide windows (`5h 83% · wk 36%` with `usageCount:
left`), instead of the session alone, and a claude pane shows it without turning the usage hub on.
omp had no context percentage: its transcript counts the tokens a request filled but never names
the window, while its status bar prints both — `◫ 26.5%/1M` (server/omp-status.ts, 5s cache). The
conversation route merges that into metadata.context (cached read, and its value is part of the
ETag, so a 304 cannot freeze the figure). Live: `Context 74% left · 265k of 1M tokens`.
Verified in the browser (headless Chromium, claude pane w1M:p4R):
.composer-usage "5h 83% · wk 36%" title "Session 83% left · Resets in 2h 19m / Weekly 36% left
· Resets in 1d 20h"; .composer-context "Context 68% left · 316k of 1M tokens"
omp pane w1B:p31: "Context 74% left · 265k of 1M tokens" (bar said 26.5%/1M)
GET /api/usage -> claude plan=max problem=null windows session 17 / week 64 (used), no request made
Gates: typecheck 0 errors; bun test src shared 2608 pass, the same 9 pre-existing AgentSidebar
phone-sheet failures; build ok.
The preferences that make it visible (`showUsage`, `usageHidden`) were left as the reader set them:
showUsage on, the claude account no longer hidden.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Claude Code status-line integration to display session and weekly usage, reset times, model details, and context-window usage.
Claude usage can now be read from locally saved status-line data, with existing API reporting used when that data is unavailable.
Claude usage reporting is enabled on desktop local machines, and captions show all usage windows with session and weekly labels.
Added an installer option to restore the previously configured status-line command.
The change adds Claude Code status-line capture and local usage reporting, adds omp screen context to conversation metadata, and updates Composer’s usage display.
Changes: Claude Status-Line Usage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Install and capture status-line payloads scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts, scripts/statusline-tee.sh
The installer configures or restores the tee command. The tee stores incoming payloads and forwards them to the Claude status-line script.
Parse payloads and report usage server/statusline.ts, server/statusline.test.ts, server/usage.ts, server/usage.test.ts
The server parses recent status-line payloads and returns available five-hour and seven-day usage windows before using the existing API path. Tests cover parsing, file age, and usage reporting.
Enable and display usage in Composer src/components/Composer.tsx
Claude usage reporting no longer depends on the display setting on eligible desktop local machines. Captions include all usage windows.
Omp Screen Context
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse and cache omp screen context server/omp-status.ts, server/omp-status.test.ts
The parser reads the last recognized status-bar entry. Screen reads are cached per pane for five seconds. Tests cover parsed values and unrecognized output.
Attach context to conversation responses server/pane-routes.ts
The route adds omp context to metadata and includes its values in the weak ETag.
The local usage and context readers have bugs that should be fixed before merge. A scrolled omp pane can show a stale context percentage. The installer can reject the default status-line script. An expired sign-in hides a valid local reading. Multiple Claude accounts on one machine can show each other's limits.

Add a contract test for context-sensitive conversation ETags.
The existing tests cover omp conversation responses, but they do not assert metadata.context or that changing only the screen context changes the ETag and returns 200 instead of 304. Add coverage for both behaviors.

Preserve valid inline status-line commands.
Claude Code permits an inline shell command in statusLine.command. For a command such as jq -r '.model.display_name', existsSync(script) fails, so this installer cannot wrap an existing, valid status line. Forward the previous command as a command, or explicitly limit installation to script paths and avoid claiming that it preserves every previous command. (code.claude.com)

Thank you, @CharleoYang. This tackles a real gap: the usage chip shows nothing when Anthropic's usage endpoint is blocked, and omp's context ring has no percentage. Reading Claude's own status line is a clever way around that. We reviewed it carefully, and several reproduced problems keep it from merging as it is.
What we found
Usage is fetched even with Show usage off.src/components/Composer.tsx (~273) enables useUsage for every Claude pane regardless of settings.showUsage. /api/usage then queries every signed-in provider upstream, and Claude falls back to the authenticated Anthropic call when the capture is missing or stale. Show usage is documented as opt-in (src/lib/settings.ts ~159).
One capture is applied to every Claude account.server/usage.ts (~327-330) reads the single global ~/.herdr/statusline-last.json for each Claude sign-in. With a personal and a work account, whichever wrote last fills both.
The installer does not meet the bar we hold for touching an agent's own settings. It must be an explicit opt-in that only adds its own file and has an exact removal, like scripts/install-pi-integration.ts.
It replaces the user's statusLine.
~/.claude/statusline.sh resolves to /.claude/statusline.sh (the ~ is stripped and the result is absolute).
Commands with arguments (bun /path/x.ts, bash x.sh) are rejected.
There is no --remove: the flag falls through to installing.
--restore writes statusLine: null where the key was absent, keeps a stale backup across reinstalls, and leaves the wrapper and capture behind.
It ignores CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR.
The capture is stored whole and world-readable.scripts/statusline-tee.sh copies the entire status-line payload (session, cwd, model, cost) with default permissions (0644 under a 022 umask).
An elapsed quota can show as current. A capture is trusted for 6 hours by file age, so a five-hour window that reset can still read 100%.
What would make it mergeable
Keep showUsage as the gate for any upstream request. A local-only read path can be added for the capture.
Keep each Claude account's data separate: tie a capture to the account or config dir that wrote it.
Make the installer an explicit opt-in that wraps the user's existing command without changing what it runs. It should add only its own file, honour CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, and have an exact --remove (or --restore) that puts the settings back byte for byte, absent key included, and deletes its files.
Write the capture privately (0600, in a 0700 directory) with only the fields usage needs.
Judge freshness per window from resets_at.
The omp context part looks sound. Splitting it into its own PR would probably let it land sooner.
Fixed — tilde expansion.scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts:55 resolves ~/ under the home directory. Covered by scripts/install-statusline-tee.test.ts: "installs the default tilde command from HOME and forwards the original payload unchanged".
Fixed — absent setting restore.scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts:67 omits an undefined statusLine from the backup. Covered by "restores absence rather than adding a null statusLine" in the installer test file.
Fixed — status-line options.scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts:68 preserves the existing options and replaces type/command. Covered by "preserves status-line options on install and the full original object on restore" in the installer test file.
Fixed — capture permissions.scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts:58-59, scripts/statusline-tee.sh:9, and scripts/statusline-capture.ts:21-24 restrict the directory to 0700 and the atomic capture to 0600. Covered by "restricts an existing capture directory and the payload under umask 022 without blocking reads"; the test also checks forwarding to the original command and reading the captured limits. "still renders the original status line when the payload cannot be captured" covers capture failure.
Fixed — historical omp viewport.server/omp-status.ts:35-43 checks the bottom offset before and after reading, checks the history boundary, and checks the viewport before returning cached context. Covered by server/omp-status.test.ts: "requires a stable bottom viewport before and after reading, including cache hits" and "rejects a changed history boundary even when both offsets are zero". The first test also exercises successful live reads and cache hits.
Fixed — reset windows.server/statusline.ts:87-88 removes windows whose reset has passed; server/usage.ts:1064-1066 expires cached local readings at their reset. Covered by server/statusline.test.ts: "drops windows at their reset while retaining unexpired windows and context"; and server/usage.test.ts: "falls back to the Claude endpoint when every captured usage window has reset" and "invalidates a cached local reading at its reset instead of waiting for the report TTL".
Fixed — account attribution.scripts/statusline-capture.ts:13-20 snapshots the rendering CLI account from its config; server/usage.ts:330 requires that account ID to match the sign-in. An unknown capture/account uses the endpoint instead. Covered by installer test "snapshots the rendering CLI’s account and does not relabel it after a sign-in change" (ASCII apostrophe in source), and usage test "uses only the captured account’s local limits, falling back for other or unknown accounts" (ASCII apostrophe in source).
Fixed — disabled usage reporting.src/components/Composer.tsx:273 selects local-only mode when showUsage is off; src/lib/api.ts:115 requests scope=claude-local; server/usage.ts:976-984,1095 reads only the capture without provider discovery, credentials, commands, additional providers, or endpoint fallback. Covered by src/lib/usage.hook.test.ts: "keeps local-only polling and refresh events off the full usage endpoint, while enabled reporting still works"; and usage test "keeps the local-only HTTP report off every credential, command and endpoint path". Tests cover absent captures, successful local reads, reset captures, enabled full reporting, and disabled fetching.
Fixed — expired-token local readings.server/usage.ts:1062-1068 checks matched local limits before the access-token expiry gate; endpoint requests remain behind that gate. Covered by usage test "accepts matched local Claude limits with an expired token but never sends that token", including the missing-capture negative control.
Validation:
bun test scripts/install-statusline-tee.test.ts server/statusline.test.ts server/omp-status.test.ts server/usage.test.ts src/lib/usage.test.ts src/lib/usage.hook.test.ts: 109 pass, 0 fail, 291 expect() calls, 6 files.
bun run typecheck: exit 0, both TypeScript configurations completed without diagnostics.
git push delivery lane/pr2269:refs/heads/feat/statusline-limits: succeeded without force (163c1c2d..d6674461).

Thank you, @CharleoYang. This round fixes the two biggest problems. We re-checked d667446 against our earlier review, running the installer only in disposable homes.
Resolved
Show usage off now means no upstream requests. The Composer asks only for /api/usage?scope=claude-local, which reads the local capture without discovering credentials or calling any provider.
Each Claude account keeps its own data. A capture is used only for the account that wrote it.
An elapsed quota window is dropped at its reset. A still-valid weekly window stays.
Capture permissions are now private (0700 directory, 0600 file), and the ~ path resolves correctly.
Still open
There is no --remove. The flag still falls through to installing (scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts ~33-43): on a clean home, --remove installed the wrapper.
--restore leaves the wrapper, the capture helper, the backup and the captured payload behind.
The backup is never refreshed (~68). Install, restore, then set a new status line and reinstall, and the next restore brings back the first backup and loses the new setting.
Restore also reformats the whole settings file, so it is not byte-identical.
Our rule for changing an agent's own settings: an explicit opt-in installer that adds only its own file and has a --remove that puts everything back exactly and deletes what it added. scripts/install-pi-integration.ts is the model.
Existing commands with arguments still fail (~54-56): sh ~/.claude/statusline.sh --color is rejected as "not a file". With CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR set, the installer edits ~/.claude/settings.json instead of the configured one (~22).
The capture still stores the whole payload (scripts/statusline-capture.ts ~10-23), including cwd, cost and anything else Claude sends. Please keep only the quota and account fields usage needs.
Minor:
The omp context cache still has no production caller of its cleanup (server/omp-status.ts ~28-49).
The release note edits CHANGELOG.md directly; please use a changelog.d/ fragment.
The usage and account parts look good now. If the installer is the harder part, splitting it from the read side could let the rest move sooner.
…IG_DIR, and only the limits captured
The installer adds only herdr-statusline/ in Claude's config directory (CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, else
~/.claude) and edits only the statusLine member of its settings.json, in place. The wrapper runs
the previous command through sh -c, arguments and all, and draws nothing where none was set.
--remove (--restore is the same) writes settings.json back byte for byte when nothing else changed,
otherwise puts back only the status line, then deletes the directory and the captured payload. A
reinstall after the status line changed records the new one. The capture keeps only the five-hour
and weekly windows and the account, and a render without limits keeps the last reading.
…es atomically, keep the payload's bytes
A command that runs this installer's wrapper, however it is spelled (a symlinked config dir,
sh <wrapper>), is never wrapped again, and the wrapper refuses to run inside itself. The
installer's directory is used only while it holds just its own regular files; --remove deletes
only those. settings.json and the installer's files are written through a temporary file and a
rename (into the file a linked settings.json points at), so a failed write leaves them whole. The
wrapper keeps the payload's trailing newlines and runs the capture beside the status line.
…lear a killed install's temporary files
Also say what the wait for the capture costs: a render takes the longer of the capture and the
status line, not both, and the capture is not cut off with the status line's processes.
…ry on remove, and keep newer endpoint data
The wrapper no longer waits for the capture, so a render costs only the status line; tests wait for
the capture through an inherited fd, not a delay. --remove refuses a linked installer directory
instead of deleting through it. A refused refresh no longer replaces a newer endpoint answer with
an older capture.
Thank you again, @CharleoYang. Rather than send you another round, we finished the remaining items from our last review on your branch ourselves. We merged main in (keeping main's new conversation diagnostics in server/pane-routes.ts) and pushed without force on top of your commits.
What we changed
Installer (scripts/install-statusline-tee.ts), now an explicit opt-in that only adds its own directory and has an exact undo, like scripts/install-pi-integration.ts:
It honours CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR (else ~/.claude) and adds only herdr-statusline/ there (wrapper, capture helper, install record).
It edits only the statusLine member of settings.json, in place, so the rest of the file keeps its bytes. It writes through a temporary file and a rename, into the file a linked settings.json points at.
The wrapper runs the previous command exactly as Claude does (sh -c), so commands with arguments (sh ~/.claude/statusline.sh --color) work. The payload is forwarded byte for byte, trailing newline included. Where no status line was set, it draws none.
--remove (--restore is the same) writes settings.json back byte for byte when nothing else changed, and otherwise puts back only the status line (or its absence). It then deletes only the installer's own files and the captured payload.
A reinstall after the status line changed records the new one, so a stale backup is never restored.
It never wraps its own wrapper (a symlinked config dir, sh <wrapper>), and the wrapper refuses to run inside itself. It refuses a directory holding links or files it did not write. Unknown arguments are rejected instead of installing.
Capture (scripts/statusline-capture.ts): keeps only rate_limits.five_hour/seven_day (used_percentage, resets_at) and the account. cwd, cost, session and the rest are never written. It runs on its own, so the status line is drawn without waiting for it. A render without limits keeps the last reading.
Usage (server/usage.ts): a capture older than five minutes yields to a working endpoint and is used as the fallback when the endpoint refuses (403, expired token, 429), never over a newer endpoint answer. checked_at now carries the capture's own time.
omp (server/omp-status.ts): expired cache entries are dropped on each read, so the test-only cleanup is gone.
Docs: a changelog.d/claude-statusline-limits.md fragment instead of the CHANGELOG.md edit, and the opt-in steps in docs/guide.md under Subscription usage.
How we checked it
Every item has a regression test that fails on the earlier head and passes now, using temporary HOME/CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR only.
We also ran the real installer in a throwaway home with a hand-formatted settings.json and a command with arguments. The status line output was identical, the capture held only the windows and the account (0700/0600), and after --remove, cmp showed settings.json byte-identical.
bun run check fast passes at bc31fa1 (8443 unit tests, 0 failures).
Reviews (omo code reviewer and Codex, adversarial, in throwaway homes; our own commits got five rounds)
Round 1 found the installer could wrap its own wrapper through a symlinked config dir and loop, could write through a link in its directory or delete the user's files there, and could leave settings.json truncated after a failed write (all HIGH). It also found the trailing-newline loss, the capture delaying each render, and an old capture beating a working endpoint (MEDIUM). Fixed in df62024 and 7f54c55.
Rounds 2-4 found --remove deleting through a linked directory (HIGH), plus MEDIUMs: the wrapper still waiting for the capture, other spellings of the wrapper's path (/./, //, quoted, after a # comment), a killed install's temporary files blocking the next one, and a refused refresh replacing newer endpoint numbers. Fixed in 008cc10, a0f88c2, 1c35fd4 and bc31fa1.
Each fix has a test that fails on the head before it. omo approves bc31fa1. Codex's last MEDIUMs (round 4) are fixed in bc31fa1, which omo checked.
Known limits (each needs an unusual hand edit of statusLine.command while installed)
If the wrapper is run as sh -c '<wrapper path>', --remove does not recognise it. It leaves settings.json as it is and says so, and the recorded original command goes with the installer's files.
A command that only prints the wrapper's path in its exact installed spelling is treated as the installer's own by --remove.
Shell variables ($HOME) in a hand-edited path are not expanded when looking for the wrapper.
settings.json is replaced through a rename, so a hard link to it is not kept (a symlink is followed and kept).
The usage and omp parts of your change are unchanged apart from the fallback rule above. Thanks for the idea and the careful first rounds!
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Follow-up: CI on bc31fa1 caught two browser checks that still expected the old chip, so 332348c updates them (test-only).
scripts/chat-history-browser-qa.ts: its test server now answers the local-only /api/usage?scope=claude-local read, which a Claude pane's composer makes even with Subscription usage off.
scripts/composer-fit-demo-regression.ts: the chip now expects both windows (5h 22% · wk 84%, or wk 84% alone when no session is reported) instead of the session alone.
Both pass locally. bun run check fast passes at 332348c, and CI is running again.
… a crash mid-install left
Its install and removal take the home and Claude's config dir instead of the CLI's environment, so
the server can run them. A config dir without settings.json gets one, and removal deletes it again;
removal also cleans up after an install killed before its record.
…line, offered where a refusal looks expired
Settings -> Subscription usage gets Read Claude's limits from its status line (default off); the
server runs the installer on or off from POST /api/usage/statusline, whose body is only enabled.
A watching device reads it and is refused the change, on this PC and through a PC's route. A Claude
403 to a token that has not expired is marked statusline_offer, and the usage popover offers Read
from Claude's status line instead. The composer chip and /api/usage are main's again. Browser test
servers read usage from a temporary home.
…aved command in errors, offered only where it applies
Install and removal hold a lock in Claude's config dir, so two servers cannot interleave them.
Without a record, removal deletes only a wrapper with the installer's banner and the capture helper
it ships. A settings.json linking to a missing file is refused and left alone. Only the installer's
own refusals reach the response; anything else is logged. Claude's 403 offers the status line only
where it can run and for the sign-in in the config dir the switch changes. The popover says the
limits come once Claude next draws its line, and errors show the server's words only.
…, and read CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR as a path
The lock is built aside with its owner and renamed into place, so no change sees one half made; a
lock whose holder still runs is waited for however old it is, and its refusal names the lock to
delete when nothing holds it. Only a sign-in found in the default home is ~/.claude: a configured
directory named default is that path.
Thanks again, @CharleoYang. The maintainer decided that nobody should have to run a command for this, so we reworked the installer part on your branch into a Settings switch. Pushed without force on top of your commits; the omp context part and your usage reading are unchanged.
What changed
Settings → Subscription usage has one switch, Read Claude's limits from its status line (off by default). The server turns it on or off for its own PC through POST /api/usage/statusline, whose body is only {"enabled": true|false}: no path, no command. A watching device sees it and is refused the change (403 read_only), on this PC and through a PC's route.
In place: when Anthropic answers 403 for a Claude sign-in whose token has not expired (the blocked-network case that showed as "Sign-in expired"), the usage popover offers Read from Claude's status line instead. It is offered only where the switch can run (not on Windows) and for the sign-in in the config directory the switch changes.
The installer is now a server module (server/statusline-install.ts), with the same opt-in rules as before: it adds only herdr-statusline/ in Claude's config directory, edits only the statusLine member, and turning it off writes settings.json back byte for byte (or deletes it when it created it). New: one change at a time even across processes (a lock that names its holder), cleanup after a crash mid-install, only the installer's own files removed, a dangling settings link refused, and no saved command ever echoed in an error.
The composer chip is main's again (session first, or the week when none is reported), and the scope=claude-local path is gone.
Docs: the guide's Subscription usage section and the changelog fragment describe the switch.
Checks
Every fix has a test that fails on the earlier head and passes now (temporary homes only). A contract test drives the real server: the owner turns it on and off with settings.json back byte for byte, extra body keys get 400, a watching device gets 403.
Browser: usage-regression now covers the offer and the switch; settings-pages-demo, composer-fit-demo and cliproxy-settings pass; browser test servers read usage from a temporary home.
Reviews (omo code reviewer and Codex, adversarial, on the rework)
Round 1: dangling settings link replaced then deleted, offer shown on Windows (MEDIUM, omo); concurrent install/remove across processes and removal without a record deleting user files (HIGH, Codex), saved commands echoed in errors and the offer for a sign-in in another config dir (MEDIUM, Codex). Fixed in 098ceeb.
Round 2: omo approved; Codex found the stale-lock takeover could remove a live lock (HIGH) and CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=~/.claude hid the offer (MEDIUM). Fixed in fae6457 and b136b7e.
Round 3 (Codex, lock only): an owner file read before it was written, a stopped live holder overruled after 10 min (HIGH), and CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=default read as the default (MEDIUM). Fixed in 8008cf8: the lock is published whole and a live holder is never overruled.
Known limits
The switch and the offer are for the server's own PC; Subscription usage reads only that PC. The endpoint also answers through a PC's route, for when remote usage comes.
It uses the server's own CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR; a Claude Code started with a different one is not wrapped.
A lock left by a crashed server whose pid another process now holds is not taken over; the refusal names the lock to delete.
The wrapper runs the capture with the server's Bun by path.
Hand edits of statusLine.command that run the wrapper through sh -c '<wrapper>' are not recognised by removal.
Per the maintainer, this waits to merge until after 0.4.20.
Answers the merge pass's review of e4ca638:
- Every file the installer or its capture writes starts with a fixed mark;
a file of one of its names without it is the user's: install refuses
to replace it and removal leaves it (helper, record, wrapper, payload,
leftover temp files). New files are published by link, so one made
meanwhile is never replaced.
- Removal replaces the status line only when it is exactly the command
the install wrote. A changed command that may still run the wrapper
(any spelling, $HOME, relative, glob) leaves everything in place and
the switch answers 409, so the user's line keeps drawing.
- The capture reads at most 256 KiB of stdin and the reader at most
64 KiB of the capture file; the capture publishes only while its own
marked helper is still installed.
- Installed state compares with the recorded command, so a linked
config directory reads as on; a settings.json the install created and
the user since linked into dotfiles keeps its link.
Thanks for the strict review of e4ca638. All three findings are fixed in c3ade35 (one push, no force), each with a test that fails on e4ca638. Your repro script no longer reproduces any of them.
What changed
Ownership by mark, never by name (the HIGH): every file the installer or its capture writes starts with a fixed mark: the wrapper, the capture helper, install.json and ~/.herdr/statusline-last.json.
A file under one of those names without the mark is the user's. Turning the switch on refuses to replace it, and turning it off leaves it in place.
Leftover temp files are cleaned up only if their content is the start of the installer's own file.
A file that did not exist is published with a link, so a file someone creates in the meantime is never replaced.
The status line command (the MEDIUM): turning it off replaces statusLine only when it is exactly the command the install wrote, or when settings.json is byte-identical to what it wrote.
Any other command is left as it is. That covers echo <wrapper path>, a custom bash that only takes the path as an argument, and a command with an empty argument.
If the changed command may still run the wrapper, turning it off changes nothing and answers 409, so the user's line keeps drawing. This covers $HOME, /./, relative and glob spellings. Turning it on refuses those commands instead of wrapping its own wrapper.
Bounded reads (the MEDIUM): the capture stops reading stdin at 256 KiB and keeps the last reading. The reader reads at most 64 KiB of the capture file, in a loop, and only from a regular file.
Smaller fixes found along the way
The capture never replaces a link at the payload path, even a dangling one.
A capture still in flight when the switch is turned off doesn't bring the payload back. It publishes only while its own marked helper is installed.
The installed state compares with the recorded command, so a config directory reached through a link reads as on.
A settings.json that the install created and the user later moved into dotfiles and linked keeps its link.
Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Sol 6.1 (xhigh) went four rounds on the working tree. Every HIGH and MEDIUM they raised is fixed above, and the last omo pass on the final delta is APPROVE.
Known limits, left on purpose
Races: there is a window between the capture's checks and its rename, and an install could meet a file someone creates between its own steps.
Preview payloads: payloads written by unreleased preview builds of this PR carry no mark, so they are left alone.
Bare globs: an unquoted bare glob in the user's command (echo *) is refused on install. That is a false refusal, the safe direction; quoting the glob avoids it.
Checks:bun run check fast is green on c3ade35, and the 160 status-line and usage tests pass. The docs/guide.md entry and the changelog fragment now say that turning it off never touches a file it did not write.
A takeover first makes <lock>.break with mkdir; only that change reads the
owner and removes the lock, after checking the owner is gone and still
names the lock (so it was never released), and the breaker is removed
after. Takeover and release both rename the lock to a private name before
deleting it, so a lock published into the briefly empty directory is never
deleted with it. Four three-process tests (FIFO gates, no sleeps) cover a
second takeover, a holder that released and exited, and deletion during
takeover and during release; each fails on an earlier version.
The reviewer bench's stale-lock finding (#7) held on c3ade35. It's fixed in 31e588e, and 4d6c58f merges main, which had started to conflict on an import in server/index.ts. I pushed once, without force.
The race: a takeover of an abandoned lock read the dead owner and then moved the lock aside. In between, another change could take the lock over. The takeover then moved a live holder's lock aside, and a third change got in while the first was still running. Install and removal ran together and left settings.json naming a deleted wrapper.
The fix (locked() in server/statusline-install.ts):
Breaker directory: a takeover first makes <lock>.break with mkdir, so only one takeover runs at a time.
Owner checked twice: the breaker holder reads the owner, checks that the process is gone, and reads the owner again. Only a lock that still names a dead owner, and so was never released, gets removed.
Move, then delete: takeover and release both rename the lock to a private name before deleting it. Deleting in place briefly left an empty directory that a new lock could be published into and then deleted along with it.
Breaker cleanup: removing the breaker is best-effort. A leftover breaker only makes later takeovers refuse, and the refusal names it.
Tests (server/statusline-lock.test.ts): each test runs real processes that stop at FIFO gates, with no sleeps. Each one fails on an earlier version of the code and passes now:
A second takeover is refused while the first is under way. This one fails on c3ade35.
A takeover never removes a lock that was taken after the holder it found had released and exited.
A lock published while an abandoned lock is being deleted is kept.
A lock published while its previous holder releases is kept.
Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer approved with LOW findings only. Its stress runs lost no locks with the new code (0 of 147k takeover takes, 0 of about 194k releases each), against about 5,000 lost with the old in-place release. Codex Terra 6.1 found no HIGH on the final code. Its earlier HIGH and the test gaps it raised were reproduced and fixed as described above.
Merging 01cf41d, thank you @CharleoYang! (The maintainer delegated the per-PR look check and will judge the final build before the release; he chose the Settings-switch design.) With a switch in Settings (off by default), Ovis adds its own small status-line helper to Claude Code so the composer can show Claude's five-hour and weekly limits from the status line, and omp's context; turning it off removes only what Ovis wrote. Strict external review by the merge pass; per the maintainer's rule lane fix-2269 reworked it on the branch with maintainer edits and fixed the findings: every file Ovis writes carries a written ownership mark and foreign files are refused and kept (a user's own file at the same path was overwritten and later deleted); removal replaces only the exact command Ovis wrote (a custom command merely mentioning the wrapper path was clobbered), and refuses with 409 while a status line still runs the wrapper; status-line input is capped at 256 KiB and the capture file at 64 KiB. Verified in isolated homes with a reproduction script that failed before; 54 targeted tests pass. Latest head adds a serialized takeover of an abandoned status-line lock (an exclusive breaker, locks moved aside before deletion) with deterministic process/FIFO race tests; delta reviewed by the merge pass, no findings.
## Release 0.4.21
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
now re-folded on main `1ef6ea329108a0985b823e8235b03daddcd0a5f4` after
the owner held 0.4.21 for more work. The merge pass reported the 0.4.21
queue empty.
**Do not merge yet:** the owner judges the final build before release.
No tag and no Release run from this PR's author.
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.21 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.21 2026-10-30`
folded 63 fragments into the 2026-10-30 section of `CHANGELOG.md` (71
entries), linked their PRs and deleted the fragments; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`.
- `by @login` on every outside contributor's PR link: #2361@eddieparc,

- Two outside PRs had no fragment and got an entry by hand: #2341
(OpenCode background commands, Added) and #2359 (installer test timing,
Maintenance).
- Issue reporters are credited in their entries: @blaker3115-Agri
(#1488), @Hyd3-14 (#2026), @osamahbeig (#2343), @Shunamxiao (#2329),
@matiemer (#2362), @kilhyeonjun (#2344), @eddieparc (#2360), @Ploppy3
(#2236), @sulthonzh (#2340), @WOULDU-pres (#2056), @odfalik (#2038),
@aNNdii (#511), @Noobear (#2281, fixed by #2424); #2435 fixes
@cheol-95's own #2434.
- Two fragments ran past the changelog's width (#2418, #2269); their
entries are re-wrapped, words unchanged. #2382's entry reads "OpenCode's
installer puts its folder first" (reviewed earlier on this PR).
- Maintainer PRs without a fragment and without a user-facing change
have no entry: #2353 (check tool), #2371 (guide docs), #2396 and #2397
(tests), #2403 and #2433 (server and client transport seams, no
behaviour change), #2437 (test-only fix for #2435's check). #2438's own
entry (the sidebar selection marked by its fill again) is dropped: the
stroke #2352 added never shipped, so users see no change; #2352's entry
keeps only the Windows high-contrast Highlight bar.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines. Since the first review: New lists the in-browser
Claude Code / Codex sign-in (#2428) in place of the tab/workspace
shortcut line; Improved lists Settings → Agents (#2427) in place of the
sidebar fold line; Fixed lists the Codex wrong-session fix (#2426,
#2430) in place of the phone screenshot paste line. The Artifacts and
Claude status-line lines keep their reviewed wording (turned on in
Settings). Not in 0.4.21: #2420 (Codex chat behind Kiro), #2065 (Portal
sign-in) and #2436 (relay foundations) stay open for a later release.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 39 to 40 because
the bundle inputs (`server/`, `shared/`, `patches/`) changed since
remote-v39. After merge: push `remote-v40` on the merged commit and wait
for the Remote PC bundles workflow before running Release.
- **iOS:** `CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` stays 3 (#2370 changed
`Info.plist`; build 3 is not known to be uploaded yet).
## Validation
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.20`: "Release 0.4.21:
remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order."
- `dori heavy … bun run check fast` on this branch: workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests all ok. Unit:
9166 pass, 0 fail, 36 skip in 591 files.
- Every PR in `v0.4.20..main` was pre-run for the owner's hands-on guide
on isolated copies (own herdr session, fresh state, never the owner's
live session). Items that need a real device (iPhone tap dictation
#2370, dictation keyboards #2386, the installed desktop app's title-bar
overlay #2381) are left for the owner's final check.
This is a release-metadata PR: it changes no code path. Per the release
steps, merge it after CI and the owner's go, then push `remote-v40`,
wait for its bundles, and run Release with `0.4.21`.
## Change
Claude's context-remaining indicator can stay absent throughout a
session. Ovis reads the used-token count from the transcript, including
cached input, but usually lacks the context limit needed to calculate a
percentage. The UI hides the entire indicator when that limit is
unknown.
The old code has one fallback: once a Claude request exceeds 200k input
tokens, it assumes a 1M context window. At or below that threshold, it
leaves the limit unknown. This is the context used by a request, not
cumulative session usage, so a long session can still show no indicator.
The missing limit affects both standard 200k sessions and 1M sessions
below the threshold.
Extend the opt-in status-line capture from #2269 to read Claude's
reported context limit for each session and model. For example, a
session using about 40k tokens can now show about 80% remaining with a
200k limit, or 96% remaining with a 1M limit. The used-token count still
comes from the transcript; the capture supplies the limit. This does not
require subscription quota data.
Store session context separately from account quota. Accept only a fresh
capture matching the transcript's session and model. Include the
captured limit in the response version so a status-line update
invalidates an unchanged transcript's ETag.
Keep the existing bounded payload reads and file ownership checks.
Remove only this installation's session captures on uninstall. Cover
other profiles, unowned files, links, stale captures, and HTTP cache
invalidation with tests.
## Validation
- Initial implementation: `bun run check fast` passed, including
typecheck, production build, and 9,236 unit tests; 41 tests skipped.
- After the changelog review fix: typecheck, build, and 9,235 unit tests
passed. One browser-runner timeout-cleanup test failed; all six tests in
that file passed on rerun.
- Targeted status-line and conversation HTTP tests are included in the
unit suite.
- Full browser and native Windows checks were not run locally. The
status-line installer remains unavailable on Windows.

Problem
The composer's subscription chip showed nothing for Claude on a machine where Claude Code itself ran fine, and omp's context ring had no percentage at all.
GET https://api.anthropic.com/api/oauth/usage. From a blocked network that endpoint answers403 {"error":{"message":"Request not allowed"}}— an unauthenticated/v1/messagesanswers 403 too, so the block is at the edge, not the token.server/usage.tsmaps both 401 and 403 toproblem: "expired", so the chip hid itself and said "expired" while the plan was fine. Live before:GET /api/usage→claude plan=max problem=expired windows=[].metadata.context.window === null), soContextRinghad no percent — although omp's own status bar prints both numbers (◫ 26.5%/1M).Root cause
server/usage.ts:314(the Anthropic request) is the only source of Claude's windows, andserver/conversation-metadata.ts:123leaves omp's window unknown. Both figures already exist locally; neither was read.建议修法(为什么是这个修法)

Nothing else exposes them: they are not in the transcript, and the transcript's only quota record is an error.
