fix(codex): match local file links containing spaces - #2417
Codex Chat can return an empty scrollback even though the pane's saved conversation exists when an assistant answer ends in a local file link with spaces. Codex renders the target relative to cwd, but the transcript matcher treated the full destination path as answer text. For example, an answer linking [Daily report](</home/user/My Project/Daily notes/report.md>) could not match the terminal's Daily report (Daily notes/report.md).
Use the existing bounded link-target scanner consistently for answer anchors and competing-conversation text. Allow spaces in absolute Unix and Windows file destinations, including angle-wrapped destinations, while retaining the newline boundary and the unique substantial-answer requirement. Regression tests cover matching (including Windows backslash paths), ambiguity rejection, insufficient evidence, line-break and unclosed-link handling, and retaining a resolved binding after the answer leaves the screen.
Related to #2416 (partial fix). This addresses the reproduced native Codex transcript-matching failure. It does not address the older pane reported without an agent label; that pane was subsequently found to have a kiro-cli-term outer terminal with Codex on a nested PTY. Do not close the issue on this PR alone.
Validation
Before the fix, the added spaced-link matching regression failed; after the fix it passes.
HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/codex.test.ts ./server/codex-processes.test.ts: 179 passed, 5 skipped, 0 failed.
Read-only replay of the affected pane's captured output against its own rollout: matcher returned null before and the correct candidate after. Private capture and rollout contents are not included in the PR. This is matcher-level validation, not an end-to-end deployment test.
UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=3 bun run check fast: generated types/themes, typecheck and build passed; workflow syntax was skipped by the runner. Unit suite: 8,841 passed, 14 failed, 205 skipped. Full checks are not green.
The failures are outside the changed Codex files: check teardown, session history WAL handling, install/browser and runner scripts, Letta binding, file inventory, remote-entry lock, and composer framing. Two failures (check teardown socket probing and the session-history immutable WAL test) were independently reproduced on unmodified 7f71a8c6; the remaining failures were not independently checked on the baseline. CI still needs to establish the full result.
Browser and live-herdr integration suites were not run. The resolver regression uses an isolated synthetic RPC listener and temporary native store.
Follow-up test coverage
Added plain and angle-wrapped Windows backslash paths, LF/CR/CRLF boundaries, and unclosed local destinations. Malformed links must remain literal answer text and must not match a screen that omits the destination.
HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/codex.test.ts ./server/codex-processes.test.ts: 181 passed, 5 skipped, 0 failed.
Re-ran UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=3 bun run check fast with the added tests: generated types/themes, typecheck and build passed; workflow syntax was skipped. Unit suite: 8,841 passed, 16 failed, 205 skipped across 575 files. Full checks remain not green.
This run also failed two AgentDetector timeout/process-cleanup tests (server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts), in addition to the failure areas reported above. These two failures were not independently checked on the baseline; no claim is made that all failures predate this PR. The original baseline confirmation remains limited to the two tests described above.
git diff --check passed. No product code changed in this follow-up. Browser, native Windows and live-herdr integration suites were not re-run.
Local deployment verification
Applied the server-only patch to the running v0.4.20 release and restarted Ovis through its plugin stop/start actions. No new Codex prompt was sent.
The previously affected pane changed from source: scrollback with zero turns to source: codex-transcript with four turns.
In a separate browser tab, Chat displayed both user/assistant exchanges, and the unavailable message disappeared. Navigating away and returning also displayed both exchanges.
The older nested-PTY pane still returns scrollback and remains outside this fix.

Bug Fixes
Codex Chat now correctly identifies conversations when responses link to local file paths containing spaces, including Unix- and Windows-style paths. This also works when the terminal displays the path relative to its working directory.
Conversation matching remains available after the response clears from the terminal, while a displayed link label and relative path alone won’t cause an incorrect match.
Codex Chat now parses absolute Unix and drive-letter file-link targets with spaces when matching answer text to transcripts. Tests cover path formats, ambiguous matches, relative-path display, and rollout resolution. A changelog entry describes the change.

Spaced local file links now match transcripts, but angle-wrapped paths that contain parentheses can still cause a conversation to be matched and retained from the link alone. Fix the scanner and add a regression test before merging. The impact is limited to the transcript-matching path.

Pushed 9a05ac1: an angle-wrapped link target containing parentheses is now read through its closing > (CodeRabbit's finding, reproduced fail-first). (merge-pass review)
Merging 9a05ac1, thank you @cheol-95! Codex replies' local file links whose paths contain spaces are now matched and resolved (transcript matcher and resolver). Strict external review by the merge pass: the bug reproduced on main and is fixed here; ordinary following sentences stay plain text; the same file-open gates apply; other agents' link handling is unchanged; 50k-character adversarial lines match in under 9 ms (no catastrophic backtracking); 184 touched tests and typecheck pass. LOW, noted: spaced Markdown/bare file paths in the chat's own Markdown rendering (shared/markdown.ts:144) still behave as on main; outside this fix's scope. CodeRabbit's Major (an angle-wrapped target containing parentheses was cut at the inner ')', so a screen showing only the link could select the conversation) was reproduced fail-first and fixed on the branch by the merge pass.
## Release 0.4.21
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
now re-folded on main `1ef6ea329108a0985b823e8235b03daddcd0a5f4` after
the owner held 0.4.21 for more work. The merge pass reported the 0.4.21
queue empty.
**Do not merge yet:** the owner judges the final build before release.
No tag and no Release run from this PR's author.
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.21 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.21 2026-10-30`
folded 63 fragments into the 2026-10-30 section of `CHANGELOG.md` (71
entries), linked their PRs and deleted the fragments; `changelog.d`
holds only `README.md`.

@aNNdii (#511), @Noobear (#2281, fixed by #2424); #2435 fixes
@cheol-95's own #2434.
- Two fragments ran past the changelog's width (#2418, #2269); their
entries are re-wrapped, words unchanged. #2382's entry reads "OpenCode's
installer puts its folder first" (reviewed earlier on this PR).
- Maintainer PRs without a fragment and without a user-facing change
have no entry: #2353 (check tool), #2371 (guide docs), #2396 and #2397
(tests), #2403 and #2433 (server and client transport seams, no
behaviour change), #2437 (test-only fix for #2435's check). #2438's own
entry (the sidebar selection marked by its fill again) is dropped: the
stroke #2352 added never shipped, so users see no change; #2352's entry
keeps only the Windows high-contrast Highlight bar.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines. Since the first review: New lists the in-browser
Claude Code / Codex sign-in (#2428) in place of the tab/workspace
shortcut line; Improved lists Settings → Agents (#2427) in place of the
sidebar fold line; Fixed lists the Codex wrong-session fix (#2426,
#2430) in place of the phone screenshot paste line. The Artifacts and
Claude status-line lines keep their reviewed wording (turned on in
Settings). Not in 0.4.21: #2420 (Codex chat behind Kiro), #2065 (Portal
sign-in) and #2436 (relay foundations) stay open for a later release.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 39 to 40 because
the bundle inputs (`server/`, `shared/`, `patches/`) changed since
remote-v39. After merge: push `remote-v40` on the merged commit and wait
for the Remote PC bundles workflow before running Release.
- **iOS:** `CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` stays 3 (#2370 changed
`Info.plist`; build 3 is not known to be uploaded yet).
## Validation
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --base v0.4.20`: "Release 0.4.21:
remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order."
- `dori heavy … bun run check fast` on this branch: workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests all ok. Unit:
9166 pass, 0 fail, 36 skip in 591 files.
- Every PR in `v0.4.20..main` was pre-run for the owner's hands-on guide
on isolated copies (own herdr session, fresh state, never the owner's
live session). Items that need a real device (iPhone tap dictation
#2370, dictation keyboards #2386, the installed desktop app's title-bar
overlay #2381) are left for the owner's final check.
This is a release-metadata PR: it changes no code path. Per the release
steps, merge it after CI and the owner's go, then push `remote-v40`,
wait for its bundles, and run Release with `0.4.21`.
## Change
A Codex pane inside Kiro's macOS shell-integration wrapper can look like
a shell to Herdr: `pane.process_info` reports only `zsh (kiro-cli-term)`
on the outer PTY. The foreground Codex runs under a login shell on an
inner PTY. Ovis consequently renders terminal text in Chat instead of
reading the native conversation.
Add a narrowly scoped read-only fallback for this exact wrapper. Require
a single direct shell, a different nested terminal, one direct Codex
occupying its foreground group, and stable topology and process start
times across two bounded asynchronous process-table reads. Reject
background processes, deeper/arbitrary descendants, multiple shells or
foreground candidates, process replacement and failed reads. Include the
verified wrapper, shell and Codex PIDs and start times in the cached
binding identity, so PID reuse between requests cannot retain a previous
conversation. Require a substantial unique screen-answer match or its
existing process binding; weaker short-exchange heuristics are disabled
because nested peers may also be unlabelled. Use the existing Codex
store resolver after discovery; do not select a rollout by cwd or
recency. If Herdr has no agent object, use the pane's metadata only
after proving the nested Codex and discard any earlier occupant's
session report.
Refs #2419; separate from #2417. This restores native Chat reading, not
Herdr lifecycle detection or command/input routing. The sidebar status
and composer can still identify the pane as a shell/unknown because
Herdr's state remains authoritative.
## Validation
- `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/kiro-terminal.test.ts
./server/codex.test.ts ./server/codex-processes.test.ts
./server/conversation.test.ts`: 370 passed, 5 skipped, 0 failed.
Includes process-topology/lifetime rejection, between-request PID reuse,
and isolated native-store/RPC resolver regressions for an unlabelled
wrapper pane. Both Chat and background transcript readers reject the old
binding after a start-time change; unchanged processes retain it when
the answer leaves the screen.
- The added same-PID/start-time-change resolver regression failed on
`1c5512f` by returning the old conversation; it passes with the
process-identity fix. Discovery tests also cover replacement of the
wrapper, inner shell or Codex between requests.
- `bun run typecheck`: passed as part of the latest fast checks.
- Initial implementation smoke check: applied only the server patch to
the local installed v0.4.20 release and restarted Ovis via plugin
stop/start actions. No new agent prompt or terminal keystrokes were
sent.
- Two previously affected panes changed from empty scrollback to native
Codex conversations (8 and 2 turns). Browser Chat showed the selected
pane's four user/assistant pairs without the TUI prompt/status lines.
Navigating to the older pane and returning was also checked.
- The previously applied spaced-file-link fix continued to return its
four native conversation turns.
- `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=6 bun run check fast`: generated types/themes,
typecheck and build passed; workflow syntax was skipped. Unit suite:
8,846 passed, 14 failed, 205 skipped. Full checks are **not green**. The
same 14 failure names were observed before this wrapper change (check
teardown, session-history WAL handling, installer/browser scripts,
runner scripts, Letta binding, file inventory, remote-entry lock and
composer framing). Two were also independently reproduced on unmodified
main during #2417 investigation; the other failures were not
independently rerun on clean main.
- The live checks above are smoke checks on the affected installation;
automated tests use temporary stores and synthetic process metadata, not
the user's sessions.
- The process-identity follow-up was verified with isolated tests and
fast checks; it was not applied again to the installed release.
Dedicated browser regression and isolated live-Herdr integration suites
were not run. No HTTP/WS contract changes.
- `git diff --check`: passed.
