fix(agents): never read a version out of a broken agent's error - #2375
GET /api/agent-catalog no longer reads a version out of a broken agent's error, and the setup flow never offers such an agent as ready.
The bug. On the maintainer's PC, ~/.local/bin/opencode was a wrapper that ran a removed ~/.nvm/versions/node/v22.17.1/bin/opencode. opencode --version failed with .../node/v22.17.1/bin/opencode: No such file or directory, and detection, which parsed stdout and stderr together whatever the exit code, showed OpenCode at version 22.17.1. The onboarding guide's "Found on this PC" list showed it like that.
Detection (server/agent-catalog-detect.ts)
runVersion returns stdout and stderr separately.
The version is read from stdout only, and only when the flag exits 0.
A flag that exits with an error or does not start is version_error: "failed"; one that hangs stays "timeout"; exit 0 with no version on stdout stays "unreadable". None of these ever carries a parsed version.
A failure is asked again after a minute, as a timeout already was, so an install repaired behind an unchanged wrapper file shows without a server restart. Only one probe per agent runs at a time, at most four at once, and the 3 s polling is answered from the cache in between.
agentRuns(state) (shared/agent-catalog.ts): the agent is found, and its flag neither failed nor hung. An unreadable version still counts as running. The onboarding guide and the Settings agent list (stacked PRs) should use it before calling an agent ready.
A row that is there but does not run never becomes installed or ready.
While an install is under way, the card keeps waiting, since the install may repair it.
From the idle step, the row becomes a failed step with no message. The card shows "{agent} does not start / It is on this PC, but it does not start. Install it again.", and Try again reinstalls. Translations are in ko, ja and zh.
Today the card only reads the catalog while installing, so the idle path is reached once a screen feeds it a row: setupStep({ kind: "idle" }, { type: "detected", row }) gives the right starting step for any row.
Docs (docs/agent-catalog.md, the shared/protocol.ts note) and a changelog fragment.
Validation
Fail-first: a stub wrapper that execs a missing .../node/v22.17.1/bin/opencode was detected as version 22.17.1 before this change. Now it is version null, "failed".
A stub that prints its version only on stderr and exits 0 is "unreadable".
A failed flag is asked again after the minute (injected clock) and then reads the repaired target's version.
Reducer and card tests cover a broken row: idle gives "install it again", installing keeps waiting, and an unreadable version still installs.
Run on this PC against the real agents, the fixed detector reads OpenCode 2.2.2, Claude Code 2.1.311 and Codex 0.163.0. The wrapper has since been repaired by another lane, so the broken case is covered by the stub. The reviewer ran --version for all 14 catalog agents installed here: each exits 0 with its version on stdout.
bun run check fast is green.
An omo code review approved it with no blockers. Its MEDIUM point (the idle path has no live caller yet) is noted above.
Trade-offs
An agent whose first --version takes over 5 s (a first-run macOS Gatekeeper check, for example) counts as not running until a later probe answers in time.
Not verified on Windows: a .cmd shim whose target is missing should exit non-zero through cmd.exe /d /s /c. The native Windows CI job runs the unit tests there.
GET /api/agent-catalog read an agent's version from its version flag's
stdout and stderr together, whatever the exit code. A wrapper whose
target was removed (an nvm Node that is gone) fails with "...node/
v22.17.1/bin/opencode: No such file or directory", and that path's
Node version was shown as OpenCode's.
- The version is read from stdout only, and only when the flag exits 0.
A flag that exits with an error, or does not start, is version_error
"failed"; it is asked again after a minute, like a timeout, so an
install repaired behind an unchanged wrapper shows.
- agentRuns() (shared/agent-catalog.ts) says whether an agent is there
and runs: a failed or hung flag means it does not. The setup card
never makes such an agent ready: it offers to install it again, and
keeps waiting while an install is under way.

Bug Fixes
Agents that fail to start are now shown as not running, rather than appearing ready or displaying a version inferred from an error message.
Setup now offers a retry or reinstallation when an installed agent does not start. If installation is already underway, its status remains installing.
Setup errors with no details now explain that the agent is present on the PC but does not start.
Documentation
Clarified how version-check failures and timeouts affect agent status.
Version detection now uses successful stdout only and classifies failed or timed-out checks separately. Setup state and the setup card distinguish installed agents that do not run from agents that are ready.

Explanation
The title "fix(agents): never read a version out of a broken agent's error" matches the main change. Version detection now reads stdout only on exit 0, and failed probes no longer produce a parsed version. The title is specific, concise, and follows a conventional-commit style.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation. The Change section explains the problem (a broken wrapper reporting its Node path as the version), the detection and setup behavior, and the docs and changelog updates. The Validation section lists the fail-first stub test, the unit and card tests, the real-agent check, and bun run check fast, and it names the checks that were not run (Windows). It does not include contract-test coverage for the changed /api/agent-catalog HTTP response, which the template asks for on HTTP changes. It also does not link an issue, which the template asks for on features only; this is a fix, so that is not required.

Pass the effective lookup PATH to version probes.
catalogLocator can find an agent through the login-shell PATH, but runVersion starts it with the server environment. If a wrapper uses #!/usr/bin/env node and Node exists only in the login-shell PATH, the probe can fail and the detector records version_error: "failed".
Carry the effective lookup PATH into runVersion and pass it as env.PATH to Bun.spawn.

From CodeRabbit's review of #2375:
- catalogLocator can find an agent on the login shell's PATH only, but
its version flag ran with the server's own PATH. A script agent run
through env (an npm agent under nvm, whose node only the login PATH
has) then failed, and is now taken for broken. The flag now runs with
the agent's own folder first (npm's global folder holds its node),
then the PATH the locator searched, the login shell's included once
read (Locate.searchPath). Not on Windows, whose shims name node.exe
beside them.
- The changelog no longer says the setup card offers to install a
broken agent again: it only reads the catalog while installing, so
today it keeps waiting.
@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment for server/agent-catalog-detect.ts:137 (pass the effective lookup PATH to version probes): this is fixed in 86118d2. catalogLocator now exposes searchPath(), which is the service PATH plus the login shell's once it has been read. The detector runs each version flag with the agent's own folder first (npm's global folder holds its node), then that PATH. runVersion takes it as an optional path and sets env.PATH, except on Windows. A new test locates a #!/usr/bin/env script whose interpreter is only on the login PATH, and an interpreter that sits beside the agent. It reported failed before the change and reads the version now.
@devswha Confirmed by source inspection in 86118d2a. The version probe now uses the agent’s folder first, followed by the service PATH and the cached login-shell PATH. runVersion preserves the Windows exception.
The regression test covers interpreters on the login-shell PATH and beside the agent. This addresses the PATH mismatch I flagged. I did not run the tests.

Learning: Within repository "devswha/ovis", only for files matching one of ["server/agent-catalog-detect.ts"]: When reviewing version-probe execution in server/agent-catalog-detect.ts, verify that non-Windows probes receive a PATH with the agent executable's directory first, followed by the locator's effective search PATH, including the login-shell PATH once read. This lets scripts using /usr/bin/env find interpreters outside the service PATH. Preserve the exception that runVersion does not override PATH on Windows.

Merging 86118d2. GET /api/agent-catalog no longer reads a version out of a broken agent's error: the version comes from the flag's stdout only, and only when it exits 0; a flag that exits with an error or does not start is version_error "failed" (asked again after a while, since a wrapper's target can be repaired), and the setup flow never offers such an agent as ready (agentRuns in shared/agent-catalog.ts). Found on the maintainer's PC, where a broken OpenCode wrapper's "No such file" error carried Node's path and showed OpenCode as 22.17.1. Response shape unchanged (only when version/version_error take each value); the protocol and docs comments say so. Checked against the real agents: all 14 catalog agents installed here exit 0 with their version on stdout. The version flag now runs with the PATH the agent was found on (its own folder first, then the service and login-shell PATH), so an npm agent whose #!/usr/bin/env node needs nvm's node still answers instead of counting as failed. Reviewed by the merge pass, including that delta. Trade-off from the PR body: an agent whose first --version takes over 5 s counts as not running until it is asked again.
…PC (#2382)
## Change
Install-catalog fixes from real installs on the maintainer's Linux PC
(lane agents-install). No install command changed, so
`APPROVED_COMMANDS` and its equality test are unchanged.
1. **Oh My Pi, Linux and macOS:** `curl -fsSL https://omp.sh/install |
sh` gets the known issue the Windows command already had. It stops while
an older Bun (before 1.4.4) is on PATH; run `bun upgrade` first. It was
seen on Linux with Bun 1.4.3; macOS runs the same script.
2. **Oh My Pi `min_version`: left at `null` on purpose.** The request
was 18.10 for approval cards. Ovis still makes approval cards from omp's
older Approve/Deny menu when the 18.10.4 approval panel is not there
(`parseOmpApproval` in `server/dialogs/omp.ts`). A floor of 18.10 would
mark omp 18.8.7 as too old and tell users approval cards need it, which
isn't true. The only source for 18.10 was the install report's note. I
can add a floor if there's a recording of an omp version without cards.
3. **Devin:** its installer ends with its own sign-in (`devin setup`,
run unconditionally by `install.sh`, with no option to skip it). Without
a browser, that sign-in either stops at "Login canceled" and exits 1, or
waits until Ctrl+C; on the maintainer's PC it hung for more than 5
minutes. The known issue now says both, and that Devin is installed
either way. Its sign-in step is `devin auth login`, which the catalog
already lists as the separate sign-in.
4. **OpenCode:** an after-install note says its macOS/Linux installer
puts `~/.opencode/bin` first on PATH in the shell's startup file. A
user's own `opencode` wrapper elsewhere (in `~/.local/bin`) then no
longer runs. The vendor script's `--no-modify-path` would avoid it, but
it's not part of the approved command.
5. **Copilot:** `sign_in.command` is `["copilot", "login"]` (checked
with `copilot login --help`).
6. **kiro-cli: not added.** Ovis has no Kiro agent kind to start:
- it isn't in `SUPPORTED_AGENT_KINDS` or the guide's Supported agents;
- herdr's schema names no `kiro` kind;
- only an icon exists.
The catalog's ids are agent kinds Ovis runs, so an entry would offer to
install something Ovis then can't start.
7. **Hermes:** `hermes --version` loads the whole agent. It took 2.3 to
6.7 s here, past the 5 s default, so the first catalog read showed it
with `version_error: "timeout"`.
- A catalog entry can now set `detect.version_timeout_ms`. The shape
test requires it to be above 5 s and at most 30 s.
- Hermes gets 15 s.
- `AgentDetector` passes the entry's limit, or its own default, to the
version run.
## Trade-off
`GET /api/agent-catalog` waits for every agent's version flag, so on a
PC with Hermes installed its first read can now take up to 15 s instead
of 5. Later reads come from the cache.
## Validation
- **Fail-first:** a test with an injected version runner records the
limit each probe gets, without running anything. An entry with its own
limit got the detector's default before this change.
- The test also checks that the Hermes entry sets a limit above 7 s.
- The old hang test moved from Hermes to a gjc stub, so the detector's
short default still applies there.
- `shared/agent-catalog.test.ts` (shape, APPROVED_COMMANDS equality,
clean-PC runs) passes, as do the detector and route tests and
`scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts`.
- `bun run check fast` is green.
- An omo code review first blocked the omp `min_version` (item 2), and
its other points are fixed:
- the OpenCode note moved from a known issue to after-install;
- the Detection docs mention the limit;
- the hermes test stub no longer hangs;
- the limit test no longer pins Hermes's number.
## Merging with #2375
`git merge-tree` shows text conflicts with #2375
(`fix/catalog-broken-version`, head 86118d2) in three files:
- **`server/agent-catalog-detect.ts`:** both change the version-run
call. Here it is the limit; there it is the PATH, so the merged call
passes both.
- **`shared/protocol.ts`:** combine the two wordings of the
`/api/agent-catalog` note.
- **`server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts`:** keep both new tests.
Whichever merges second gets main merged in, and I'll resolve it then.
