feat(usage): sign in again to an expired Claude or Codex account - #2309
An expired Claude or Codex account in Settings → Subscription usage and in the usage popover now has a Sign in again button. It runs the same terminal-tab sign-in as Add account (claude auth login / codex login --device-auth), but in that account's own credential home (its ~/.claude-<name>, CODEX_HOME or the default home), replacing the expired credential instead of adding a new account. Before, the row had no action and Add account refuses a taken name (account_exists), so the only way was opening the CLI by hand.
POST /api/usage/login accepts { provider: "claude" | "codex", account: <key from GET /api/usage> }. The server never takes a path: localSignInPlace (server/usage.ts) reads the sign-ins on disk at request time (no provider or hub request) and finds the one whose list key matches. A key it does not list now (unknown, a hub's …:cliproxy:…, another provider's, path-like, or one whose home holds another account since) gets 404 account_not_found and no tab. Malformed bodies and other providers get 400. Add account with a taken name still gets account_exists.
The tab's command sets the home explicitly (exec env CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=<home> …), and for the default home removes an inherited one (env -u), so a shell profile that exports another account's home cannot redirect the sign-in (PowerShell/cmd equivalents on Windows). A relative CODEX_HOME runs from the server's directory, where discovery resolved it.
No button for hub accounts (their sign-in lives in the hub), the other providers (their CLIs may keep a sign-in apart from the one read here: Cursor's app, Copilot's editor; Antigravity is app-only) or a watching device. The popover keeps "Open X to renew it" for those; where the button shows, the note is just "Sign-in expired."
When the tab's login exits, the existing pane-exit hook invalidates usage, so the next read shows Signed in.
Design: follows Claude Code's /login and codex login, which re-authenticate the config home they run in rather than adding an account (DESIGN.md entry added).

Staged report (no real sign-in): Claude me@team.example expired on this PC, a hub Codex account and Antigravity expired too. Only the This-PC Claude row gets Sign in again; the others keep "Open X to renew it".

Tests (each fails before the change)
server/usage-login.contract.test.ts (real isolated herdr): sign in again to expired Claude .claude-team, Claude default .claude, Codex .codex-team, and a relative CODEX_HOME. The fake CLI records the raw variable; the tab inherits another account's home, which must stay untouched; no new home is made; the list then shows the account signed in. Refusals: unknown/hub/path/other-provider/stale keys → 404, malformed → 400, never a tab or a directory. Before: 4 new tests fail (400 instead of 200); with the home prefix removed, the default-home and Codex cases fail (sign-in lands in the inherited home).
scripts/usage-regression.tscheckUsageSignInAgain (also in ui-contexts-checks): the button only on the expired This-PC row, in the popover and Settings, desktop and phone; refusal shown; the request carries only the key; none on a watching device. Fails on main (0 buttons).
src/lib/usage.test.ts: canSignInAgain per provider and source.
bun run check fast green on the head.
Reviews
omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh, two rounds each. Round 1 (both REQUEST CHANGES) found: the default home not unsetting an inherited CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/CODEX_HOME (HIGH, fixed with env -u, plus the test that would have wiped a real home under that env), stale keys authorized by a cached report (HIGH, fixed with a fresh on-disk lookup), relative homes, waiting on hub/provider reads, the Settings button on watching devices, and the scope of providers (MEDIUM, all fixed). Round 2: both APPROVE; the Windows-POSIX-shell spacing (omo MEDIUM / Codex LOW) and an abort recheck after the session snapshot are fixed in the last commit.
Known LOW, not fixed:
cmd.exe: a credential home containing " or % is refused only after the tab opens (500, an empty tab stays).
If an expired Claude home's .claude.json stops naming its account, the list keeps the old key until rediscovery, and Sign in again answers a safe 404 until then.
The cancelled-request check (409 request_cancelled) has no test.
The owner reviews the screenshots above before this merges (merge held for his visual OK). Touches authentication and an HTTP contract, so it waits for a real review; if CodeRabbit skips it, the findings above stand in. Server change: server/ and shared/ change, so the remote bundle inputs move; no release PR is open, so REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION is left to the release.
…e popover
An expired account in Subscription usage had no action: Add account always makes a new
credential home and refuses a taken name, so renewing meant opening the CLI by hand.
Settings' account row and the usage popover now offer Sign in again for an expired sign-in on
this PC. It posts { provider, account: <the listed key> } to /api/usage/login; the server maps
the key to the credential home it found (UsageService.signInPlace) and runs the same terminal-tab
login there (CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR / CODEX_HOME, or the default home), so the expired credential is
replaced instead of a new account being made. Keys it does not list (a hub's, another provider's,
anything path-like) get 404 account_not_found without a tab; Add account keeps account_exists.
Hub accounts, Antigravity and watching devices get no button.
Review round 1 (omo + Codex): the default home is now reached by removing an inherited
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR / CODEX_HOME in the tab's command (env -u; PowerShell/cmd equivalents), and a
named home is set there too, so a profile's export cannot redirect the sign-in. The home is looked
up from the sign-ins on disk at request time (localSignInPlace), so a stale key whose home now holds
another account gets 404, and no provider or hub usage is requested. A relative home runs from the
server's directory, where it was found. Only Claude and Codex offer it; a watching device sees no
button in Settings either. The fake CLI now records the raw variable.

New Features
Expired Claude and Codex sign-ins on your local device now offer a Sign in again action in Settings and the usage popover. It reauthenticates the existing account in a terminal tab rather than adding a new account.
Sign-in refusals are shown alongside the action. Starting sign-in closes the current dialog or popover and switches to the new tab.
The action isn’t available for hub accounts or on devices being watched.
Adds a Sign in again action for expired local Claude and Codex accounts in Subscription usage. The server resolves each account’s credential home and starts sign-in there. Hub accounts, other providers, and watching devices do not receive the action.

The description explains the problem, resulting behavior, linked issue, security boundaries, screenshots, known limitations, and validation results. It uses "What" and "Tests" headings instead of the template's "Change" and "Validation" headings, but the required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2299 requires renewal for expired local Claude and Codex accounts in Settings and the usage popover. The changed UI gates Sign in again through canSignInAgain, which accepts only expired non-hub Claude or Codex usage and omits the action on watching devices. POST /api/usage/login accepts the listed account key, and localSignInPlace resolves the current credential source on disk. The server rejects unknown, stale, cross-provider, and path-like keys before it opens a tab. The command targets the resolved credential home and clears inherited home variables for the default home. The contract, UI regression, and unit tests cover these requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to issue #2299. Server changes implement account-key validation and credential-home selection. UI changes add the required action, lifecycle handling, and watching-device exclusion. Tests cover the HTTP contract and UI behavior. The design, changelog, and translations document the same feature. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Merge-pass review of #2309 (d6505d4):
- HIGH: a configured CODEX_HOME / CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR that is a directory literally named
"default" (or "keychain") was taken for the default-home sentinel, so Sign in again ran in the
default home. Discovery now tags each Claude/Codex sign-in with a CredentialHome
({ kind: "default" } | { kind: "dir", dir }) and the login reads the tag; no source string is
compared.
- MEDIUM: nothing kept two logins off one credential home. UsageLoginService now reserves one
login per effective home across Add account and Sign in again (409 login_in_progress), held by
the login's pane, released on a failed launch, on the pane's exit, or when herdr no longer knows
the pane.
Tests: a directory named default for both CLIs, two concurrent Sign in again through the server,
and Sign in again while Add account's login is open; all four fail on d6505d4.
…cess ends
Codex's review of 8ef605d: a reservation passed to the pane before the login command was sent,
so a send that failed left the home held by an idle tab (retries got login_in_progress until it
was closed). It now passes to the login only once the command is sent; a failure before that frees
it. A reservation also keeps the login's shell pid (the CLI's, with exec) and lets go only when
herdr no longer knows the pane and that process is gone: herdr 0.9.5's pane.get follows a pane
moved to another workspace, and the pid keeps the hold where a herdr would not.
Tests end a held login as its user would (Enter, then the server's pane-exited), cover a tab moved
to another workspace, and a send that fails after the tab opened (fails on 8ef605d).
HIGH: a configured home named default (or keychain) was taken for the default home. Reproduced: with CODEX_HOME=default (and CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=default), Sign in again ran the CLI with no home set. Discovery now tags each Claude/Codex sign-in with a CredentialHome ({ kind: "default" } or { kind: "dir", dir }, server/usage.ts), and the login reads the tag; no source string is compared any more. Regression: "signs in again in a CODEX_HOME / CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR directory literally named default" (fake CLI records the raw variable and writes in ./default); both fail on d6505d4.
MEDIUM: no ownership of a credential home while a login runs.UsageLoginService now reserves one login per effective home across Add account and Sign in again; a second request gets 409 login_in_progress. The reservation is held by the login's pane and shell pid (the CLI's own, with exec). It is freed when the launch fails before its command is sent, when the pane exits, or when herdr no longer knows the pane and that process is gone. Regressions (real isolated herdr, logins held open and finished with Enter): two concurrent Sign in again through the server get [200, 409], and a third gets 409 while it runs; Sign in again while Add account's login on that home is open gets 409, then 200 once it ends. Both fail on d6505d4.
Codex Sol 6.1 xhigh on 8ef605d (omo-native-code-reviewer approved it):
MEDIUM: ownership passed to the pane before the command was sent, so a send failure left the home held. Fixed in 317d95d: it passes only once the command is sent. Test: "frees the home when the login command could not be sent to its new tab", which fails on 8ef605d.
MEDIUM: a tab moved to another workspace gets a new pane ID. Not reproduced on herdr 0.9.5: pane.get with the old ID resolves to the moved pane. The reservation now also checks the CLI's pid, so it holds on a herdr that does not follow old IDs. The moved-tab test covers it end to end; it passes on 8ef605d too on this herdr.
Left as LOW (omo):
An account that names no account and is found under a configured CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=default shares its hashed key with the default home's unnamed account, so the list shows one of them.
Lock keys are plain resolved paths: a symlinked home, or a Windows path in another letter case, could give one directory two keys.
Checks on 317d95d: server/usage-login.contract.test.ts 29/29, twice in a row; typecheck green; bun run check fast green.
Merge-pass review of 317d95d: the lock key was resolve()d, not realpath()d, so with
CODEX_HOME=<a symlink to ~/.codex-new> Add account and Sign in again took two keys for one home
and ran two CLIs on it. Both now lock the home's real path (for a home not made yet, its nearest
existing parent's real path and the rest). The Add-then-Sign-in-again test also runs through a
symlinked CODEX_HOME; that case fails on 317d95d.
Merge-pass review of 317d95d: MEDIUM 1 fixed in 4a557a4, MEDIUM 2 filed as #2313.
MEDIUM 1: the lock did not resolve aliases. Reproduced: with CODEX_HOME a symlink to ~/.codex-new, Add account and Sign in again took two lock keys (resolve() spelling) and ran two CLIs on one home. Both paths now lock one canonical identity: the home's realpath. For a home not created yet (Add account's new home), that is its nearest existing parent's realpath plus the remaining names. Regression: the Add-then-Sign-in-again test now also runs through a symlinked CODEX_HOME (Sign in again gets 409 login_in_progress until Add account's login ends). It fails on 317d95d.
MEDIUM 2: a server restart forgets a running login. Filed as #2313 with your reproduction and two possible directions: persist reservations in the stateDir, or rebuild them from live sign-in panes on start.
Checks on 4a557a4: server/usage-login.contract.test.ts 30/30; typecheck green; bun run check fast green.
…ie held test logins to their own receipts
Merge-pass review of 4a557a4:
- canonicalPath() fell back to a spelled path on any realpath error, so an EACCES let Sign in
again through a symlinked home start while Add account's login ran. Only a path that does not
exist (ENOENT) falls back to its parent now; any other error refuses the sign-in with
409 credential_home_unreadable. Test: an injected EACCES while Add account's login is open
(fails on 4a557a4).
- The symlink test waited for any codex-receipt.json, so the previous iteration's retry could wake
it before Add account had written its sign-in. Each held launch now writes a receipt of its own
(TEST_LOGIN_RECEIPT), and every test awaits each launch it started, the last retry included.
Merge-pass review of 4a557a4: both MEDIUMs fixed in ac13d64.
MEDIUM 1: realpath errors failed open.canonicalPath() now falls back to the parent only when the path does not exist (ENOENT). Any other error (EACCES, ...) refuses the sign-in with 409 credential_home_unreadable and a message to check the folder's permissions on the server PC. No tab opens and Add account makes no home. Test: "refuses a sign-in when it cannot tell which credential home it would write" injects EACCES into realpathSync while Add account's login is open, for Sign in again through a symlinked CODEX_HOME and for a second Add account. It fails on 4a557a4 (Sign in again launched).
MEDIUM 2: flaky symlink test. Its watcher woke on any codex-receipt.json, so the previous iteration's retry could wake it before Add account had written its sign-in. Each held launch now writes a receipt of its own (TEST_LOGIN_RECEIPT). The tests await the exact launch they started, and await their last retry before they end.
Checks on ac13d64: server/usage-login.contract.test.ts 31/31 in three runs in a row; typecheck green; bun run check fast green.
…al homes
CodeRabbit (server/usage.ts): a key is provider:accountId, so one account signed in in two
homes (each with its own token) is one row in the list, and Sign in again opened whichever home
discovery read first, perhaps not the expired one. When a key matches more than one home after the
same-token dedup, the login now answers 409 account_ambiguous, telling the user to sign in again
from a terminal in the folder they want; no tab opens. The key and the API stay as they are.
Test: two Claude homes with the same expired account (fails on ac13d64).
Merging 6770d6d (closes #2299). An expired Claude or Codex account in Settings → Subscription usage and in the usage popover gets Sign in again: the same terminal-tab sign-in as Add account (claude auth login / codex login --device-auth), run in that account's own credential home, replacing the expired credential. The server never takes a path: POST /api/usage/login takes the account key from GET /api/usage, and no token is refreshed or written by Ovis. Authentication, so the merge pass reviewed it strictly over four rounds on a real server with stub CLIs. Round 1: a configured home whose path was literally default/keychain was taken for the default home (HIGH), and two logins could run on one home (MEDIUM). The homes are now a tagged type from discovery, and one login per credential home holds across Add account and Sign in again (409 login_in_progress), keyed on the home's real path (a symlinked home or parent shares the lock), and a home whose real path cannot be read (EACCES, ELOOP, ENOTDIR) is refused with 409 credential_home_unreadable and nothing launched or created. Verified on the final head: those refusals, ENOENT still creating a new home, the lock released on pane close, CLI kill, completion and missed events (10 extra cycles), traversal/absolute/unknown/lookalike keys refused, watching devices 403 read_only, a foreign Origin 403, a home name with shell syntax passed literally, the notes at 1280 and 390 px; unit 12/12, contract 31/31 three times in a row, typecheck clean. CodeRabbit's last thread (one account signed in in two credential homes could renew the wrong one) is fixed in 6770d6d: such a key now answers 409 account_ambiguous before any tab or lock (the merge pass read the delta; contract 32/32). The owner approved the screenshots before this merge. Follow-up: #2313 (a server restart forgets a login in progress). Not filed (LOW): some older contract tests still wait on a provider-wide receipt file, and a few launch-success retries do not await their CLI's receipt.
…erver restart (#2313) (#2325)
Closes#2313
## What
Sign in again and Add account allow one login per credential home
(#2309), but the lock lived only in the server's memory, while the login
itself runs in a herdr tab that outlives the server. After an Ovis
restart (update, crash, manual restart) with a sign-in tab still open,
the same account could start a second CLI login into the same home, and
the two raced each other's tokens.
Now `UsageLoginService` keeps each holder in
`<stateDir>/usage-logins.json` (via `writePrivateState`: 0600, fsync,
atomic rename), and `createServer` points it at its state dir. A holder
is the home key, the tab's pane ID and **the tab's herdr terminal ID**
(`tabCreate`'s `root_pane.terminal_id`), saved as soon as the tab opens,
so a restart mid-launch is covered too.
A home stays taken while that terminal is in herdr's session snapshot,
in any tab:
- herdr keeps a terminal's ID when its tab moves to another workspace
(the pane ID changes; checked in an isolated herdr), and never hands one
out again; a herdr restart gives restored panes new terminals
(`scripts/herdr-restart-regression.ts`), while their pane IDs repeat.
Pane IDs and pids are therefore not used as proof: a restarted herdr
reuses pane IDs, and a pid can name anything after a reboot.
- The terminal is there exactly as long as the login runs: the CLI
replaces the tab's shell (`exec`), or the shell exits after it
(Windows).
- Any herdr error keeps the home taken (fail closed: the same `409
login_in_progress` as #2309, whose message says to finish or close the
tab).
Servers on one state dir share the file as one record (a source `bun run
server` beside the installed app, say). Each change is one
read-modify-write under the file's kernel guard (`withOwnerGuard`,
`server/owner-guard.ts`), and a server adds or removes only its own
entries, matched by launch ID or terminal, and takes over another's only
in the step that finds it unchanged and ended; it never writes back a
stale view of others. Taking a home fails closed: when the guard cannot
be taken or released, or the file cannot be written, the request fails
without opening a tab (a sign-in other servers cannot see could run
beside another). The login command is sent only after the file names the
opened tab as the home's holder; if that write fails (or another server
took the entry over), the tab is closed and the request fails, so no
login runs under a launch entry that expires. A state file that exists
but cannot be read or parsed refuses sign-ins (`409
login_state_unreadable`, saying to close any open sign-in tab and repair
or remove the file); only a missing file counts as empty. Freeing a home
is best effort and logged: an entry left behind holds only until a
server finds it ended. The guard file is opened without following a
symlink (`O_NOFOLLOW`, `server/owner-guard.ts`), so a planted link
cannot make it create a file elsewhere. A launch is recorded in the file
before anything is awaited (its server's pid, its start time and a
random ID), so another server refuses that home while the tab is still
opening; a launch whose server is gone, or older than 60 s (a launch
opens its tab within the request's 30 s), no longer holds. This replaces
#2309's in-memory pane + pid check with one snapshot check (no per-pane
`pane.process_info` fan-out). No HTTP contract change.
## Tests
`server/usage-login.contract.test.ts`, seven new cases, and one in
`server/owner-guard.test.ts`:
- **keeps a home taken across a server restart while its sign-in still
runs in its tab, and frees it once that ended**: a server started beside
the first (before its sign-in) answers `409`; after the first stops, a
restarted server answers `409` with `tabCreate` called once; once herdr
says the login's pane exited, `200`. On main the restarted server
answers `200` and opens a second tab.
- **starts one sign-in when two servers on one state dir are asked for
one home at once**: the first server's launch is held before its tab
opens; the second server answers `409`, the first opens its tab,
`tabCreate` called once. Fails on a version that keeps launches in
memory only (`200` twice).
- **refuses once, without looking again and again, when a crashed
launch's entry cannot be replaced, and signs in once it can**: an
expired launch in the file and a disk refusing writes (`ENOSPC`): one
write attempt, `500`, no tab; once writes work, `200`. A version that
released and looked again re-read the same launch for every refused
write (a microtask loop that starved the server); one that swallowed the
write started a sign-in no other server could see.
- **refuses a sign-in while the state file of running sign-ins is
corrupt / unreadable, rather than reading it as empty** (`{broken`; mode
000): `409 login_state_unreadable`, no tab, no credential home left.
Both answered `200` before.
- **closes the tab and sends no login when that tab cannot be recorded
as the home's holder** (`ENOSPC` on the second write): `500`, the tab
closed, no command sent to it, the file empty again. Answered `200` and
ran the CLI before.
- **owner guard: refuses a guard planted as a link, creating nothing
where it points**: a dangling `*.guard` symlink; nothing runs and the
target is not created.
- **frees a home after a restart when its sign-in ended while no server
ran, even when its pane ID now names another tab**: the saved pane ID is
pointed at another live tab (a restarted herdr reuses IDs); the home is
free. Fails when the check trusts the pane ID (mutation run).
The restart test hears the pane's exit on its own herdr subscription:
the shared test server hears no exit before the file's first
(`beforeAll`), so a filtered run would miss it. The whole file passed in
repeated runs, also filtered to the new cases; `bun run check fast`
passed.
## Manual QA
The real entrypoint (`bun run server/index.ts`) twice on one
`OVIS_STATE_DIR`, against a throwaway headless herdr session, with a
stub `claude` CLI: server A opened the sign-in tab (`200`, `w1:p1`,
holder `term_65ef2e58586051` written); A stopped (port free); server B
(new pid, bound the port itself) answered `409 login_in_progress` for
the same account while the CLI still ran; after the login finished, B
answered `200` and wrote the new tab's terminal. Everything torn down
afterwards (no process, port or temp dir left).
## Known limits (LOW, not fixed here)
- The pre-0.4.16 sibling state-dir merge (`server/state-merge.ts`) does
not carry `usage-logins.json`: a sign-in tab open during an install's
one-time switch between `herdr-web-ui` and `ovis` state dirs is not seen
by the next server.
- The guard's no-follow open is POSIX only; on Windows (where a symlink
needs admin or Developer Mode) the guard still follows one. Follow-up.
- Pre-existing: if `paneSendText` fails after herdr already delivered
the command, the sign-in runs while the home is freed. Follow-up.
- By design: one damaged entry blocks sign-ins for every account until
the file is repaired or removed; the `409` says so. The file is new in
this PR, so no older release writes one.
- Pre-existing: `ended(paneId)` frees this server's holder by pane ID,
so if a moved login's old pane ID is handed to a new pane and that pane
exits, the home is freed while the CLI runs.
- A launch that hangs for more than 60 s before its tab opens no longer
holds the home for another server;
- Where the file's guard cannot be loaded at all (no usable libc for
`bun:ffi`), every sign-in now fails with `500` instead of starting;
managed installs already need that guard at startup, so this affects
only a hand-run server on such a host.
## Reviews
omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Sol 6.1 fast xhigh, five rounds: both
APPROVE on fd0a106; the merge pass's strict review of b187b88 then
found two fail-open MEDIUMs (a damaged state file read as empty; the
tab's record failing after the login was sent) and a LOW (guard
symlink), fixed in the next head. Every HIGH and MEDIUM was fixed; the
record of findings and resolutions is in a PR comment. The LOWs left are
the known limits above.
## Remote bundle
Changes `server/` only; no `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` change (the release
PR raises it).
) (#2335)
## Change
Closes#1617. Targets 0.4.20 (the owner moved it in from 0.4.21). This
upgrades xterm.js from 5.5.0 to 6.0.0, so a terminal draws only whole
frames: xterm 6 honours synchronized output (DEC mode 2026,
xtermjs/xterm.js#5453). Ovis's xterm source patch is ported to 6.0.0. It
follows #2331 (merged), whose regression script measured the problem;
this PR makes that script assert zero half-drawn frames.
**Why:** herdr sends every frame it draws inside `CSI ? 2026 h` … `l`,
and large frames reach the browser split over several WebSocket frames.
xterm 5.5 ignored the brackets and painted whatever it had parsed so
far: the top half of the new frame over the bottom half of the old one.
The owner saw this while agents stream, most of all with Korean text.
| `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts`, real pane, 162x53 |
renders | mixed (two frames at once) | drawn inside an open block |
|---|---|---|---|
| xterm 5.5.0 (main), 3 runs | 128 / 108 / 110 | **46 / 26 / 28** | 46 /
26 / 28 |
| xterm 6.0.0 (this PR), 3 runs | 82 / 82 / 82 | **0 / 0 / 0** | 0 / 0 /
0 |
In every run, all 62 of herdr's blocks reached the browser intact, and
59-62 of them were split over WebSocket frames. 6.0 also renders fewer
times (82 against 108-128), because it skips the intermediate paints.
## What changed
- **Pins:**
- `@xterm/xterm` 6.0.0, `@xterm/addon-fit` 0.11.0 (was `^0.10.0`) and
`@xterm/addon-web-links` 0.12.0 (was 0.11.0). All three were released
with 6.0.0 on 2025-12-22.
- `@xterm/addon-unicode-graphemes` 0.4.0 is unchanged; it was already
the 6.0 release.
- **The patch** (`patches/@XTerm%2Fxterm@6.0.0.patch`, which replaces
the 5.5.0 one):
- The same 12 files, moved to 6.0's layout: `browser/Terminal.ts` is now
`CoreBrowserTerminal.ts`, the `Types.d.ts` files are `Types.ts`, and 6.0
uses VS Code's lifecycle names (`_register`, `addDisposableListener`,
`Emitter`).
- 3 of 34 hunks needed hand-porting:
- **Textarea blur:** ported to the new listener.
- **`_finalizeComposition`:** ours replaces 6.0's. 6.0's only change
there was its duplicate-input fix (#5024), slicing to a new
composition's start, and our send already does that.
- **DPR monitor disposal:** dropped, because 6.0 already registers it.
- The key, keypress, keyup, input, paste, blur and focus handlers the
patch touches are unchanged in 6.0 apart from one
`scrollToBottom(true)`, so the IME paths are carried over as they were:
- Safari/WebKit Hangul preedit, including the iOS app's WKWebView gate
(#2307).
- Dictation, the Gboard Backspace reset, the Linux digit candidate
(#1654), the long-composition view (#2031) and #938/#1327.
- Paste order, input reset, textarea placement and `oscStringState`.
- **New hunk, `CoreMouseService.ts`:** keeps one wheel report per row of
a trackpad's travel, as 5.5 counted it. 6.0 scales a pixel delta under
50 px by 0.3, which made scrolling a mouse-reporting program, herdr's
history included, 3.3 times slower on a trackpad.
- **New hunk, `Keyboard.ts`:** keeps Alt/Option+Left/Right as 5.5 sent
them (`ESC b`/`ESC f` on a Mac, Ctrl's sequence elsewhere). 6.0 dropped
that mapping (#5346), and docs/terminal-input.md promises Option+arrow
moves by word.
- **Building xterm's source:** `scripts/build-xterm.ts` and the Vite
aliases resolve 6.0's `vs/*` sources and its `vs/nls` stub, and use
xterm's own `useUnknownInCatchVariables: false` for them. The browser
scripts that bundle xterm with `Bun.build`
(`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`, `chat-history-browser-qa.ts`) now
share one plugin, `xtermSourcePlugin`, with the same resolution.
`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` had resolved only `browser/` and
`common/`, through a second `plugins` key; the lane caught it.
- **Tests:**
- `scripts/terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`: 5.5 threw "dimensions" from
a terminal disposed at once, and 6.0 does not, so both modes now assert
no error.
- `scripts/xterm-parser-state.test.ts` pins 6.0.0. The parser fields and
states the OSC accessor reads are unchanged, and that test checks them.
- `scripts/terminal-sync-output-regression.ts` now asserts 0 mixed
renders and 0 renders drawn inside an open block.
- **Docs and comments:** updated where the version mattered.
`THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md` adds Microsoft's copyright for the `vs/base`
code 6.0 bundles (MIT).
## 6.0 changes checked against Ovis
- **#5263** (the helper textarea is read-only while `disableStdin`):
Ovis sets `disableStdin` only where input is dropped anyway (observing,
held, ended, unsupported). Drafts come from `onData`, which never fires
then. A phone keyboard no longer opens on such a pane, which matches "an
observer never types".
- **#5096** (new viewport and scrollbar): we keep `scrollback: 0`, and
fit 0.11 reserves no scrollbar width at `scrollback: 0`. Our
`::-webkit-scrollbar` rule is now inert.
- **#5462** (removed options): Ovis uses none of them. `_oscLinkService`
(the OSC 8 lookup in `terminalFold.ts`) still exists.
- **Mode 2026 left open:** every new stream resets xterm first, so mode
2026 never carries over. A pane switch calls `term.reset()`, and an
attach or watch writes `ESC c` in stream order. The cached-tab path is
bounded by xterm's 1 s safety timeout. A late joiner gets the last 2026
switch from `ReplayBuffer`.
- **xtermjs/xterm.js#5801** (ED2 inside a 2026 block moves the
viewport): this cannot happen here. I checked it with a real Claude Code
2.1.311 answer in Korean, plus a resize, on this branch. Across 238
blocks only one `ESC [2J` reached the browser, herdr's own first draw,
because herdr re-renders the pane rather than passing Claude Code's
erases on. xterm's viewport never had anything to scroll: its scroll
range and scroll position stayed 0 on every render, since we keep
`scrollback: 0`. The settled screen matched herdr's `pane.read` row for
row, 14 Hangul rows included.
- modifyOtherKeys: still not supported by 6.0, so `PaneTerminal` keeps
sending Ctrl+Enter itself, as before.
## Evidence
- `bun run check fast`: green on this head (8,566 unit tests pass, 0
fail).
- **The browser lane** (IME, paste, OSC 52 replay, late join and every
terminal script): CI's browser regression jobs run it on this head. A
full local run is under way, and its result will follow in a comment.
- Earlier local runs caught two problems, both fixed here:
`terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts` could not resolve 6.0's `vs/` sources,
and `ui-contexts` failed on the usage-row race.
- On this head, `terminal-dispose-browser-qa.ts`,
`chat-history-browser-qa.ts`, `terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`,
`omo-question-wheel-regression.ts`, `ui-regression.ts` and
`ui-contexts-regression.ts` pass locally.
- **Changelog:** `changelog.d/xterm-6-whole-frames.md`.
- **Device checks with native input**, main (`4485f4d6`, xterm 5.5)
against this branch (`e3c33e32`). The later commits change only the
wheel factor, tests and comments.

- **Windows CI steps in the VM** (`windows-install.test.ps1`, preflight,
frozen install, build, the Windows test set,
`windows-terminal-browser-qa.ts`): 7 of 7 pass on both main and this
branch (45 tests pass, 1 skipped).
## Reviews
- **omo-native-code-reviewer:** APPROVE; no CRITICAL or HIGH.
- **M1, fixed:** 6.0's trackpad scaling. The patch now keeps one report
per row, and `omo-question-wheel-regression.ts` gained a case that sends
12 untrusted pixel wheels of 0.55 rows and expects 6 reports; with 6.0's
scaling it gets 2.
- **Fixed LOWs:** an Alt+ArrowLeft assertion in
`terminal-arrows-clicks-regression.ts`, so the kept mapping cannot
silently drop again; and three comments.
- **Not changed:**
- **L1:** the read-only textarea is checked by reasoning; the device
runs above typed only on panes that take input.
- **L2:** a stream that stops inside a block now shows its half frame
after xterm's 1 s timeout instead of at once. Every pane switch, attach
and watch resets the terminal first, so this applies only to a cached
tab's re-attach.
- **Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, fast, xhigh):** APPROVE on the upgrade, with no
findings at any severity. It compared every hunk; typecheck passed, and
2,571 targeted tests pass.
- **Codex on the follow-ups** (the wheel hunk, the shared plugin, the
test changes): REQUEST CHANGES, both fixed, then APPROVE with no
findings.
- **MEDIUM:** the Alt+ArrowLeft expectation now follows the page's
platform (`ESC b` on a Mac), as xterm decides.
- **LOW:** the dispose test again proves the deferral defers. With both
modes now expecting no errors, the deferred case asserts the terminal is
still alive after xterm's queued frames, and disposed only after the
following task.
- Codex checked that removing the Alt mapping, or disposing immediately,
after the frame only, or not at all, makes those tests fail.
- **CodeRabbit on #2331:** one nitpick. The harness should compare acked
flow identities, not only counts. Done here.
## Also in this PR
- `test(usage): …`: `checkUsageSignInAgain` (from #2309) counted
Settings' account rows right after opening the page, before `/api/usage`
had drawn them. It failed in 2 of 3 browser-lane runs on this branch and
passed once on main. It now waits for the rows.
- The browser lane's `ui-regression.ts` fails when TMPDIR is under
`$HOME`, because the folder picker shows the path as `~/…`. This is a
test assumption, not touched here; the lane was run with TMPDIR under
`/tmp`.
…#2427)
Settings → **Subscription usage** and Settings → **Agent integrations**
become one page, **Settings → Agents**, as the owner picked from the
design demo (agents-settings-demo). Part 1 of 2 for 0.4.21; in-browser
sign-in follows on top of this.
## Change
- **One row per agent on the PC** (catalog order, `GET
/api/agent-catalog`): mark, name, version, and one state line read from
the plan-usage accounts: *Signed in · account*, *N accounts · M need
attention*, *Not signed in*, or just *Installed* where Ovis reads no
sign-in for that agent (OmO, pi, Hermes…). Nothing is guessed.
- While shut, a row offers its one missing step: **Sign in again** for
its one expired account, or **Sign in** when it has no account. Sign in
opens the existing Add account dialog already on that provider (new
`provider` preset on `UsageAccountDialog`).
- Opened, it shows the agent's accounts, with each account's glance
limit, the existing move/hide controls and Sign in again (#2309), plus
**Add account**. It also shows herdr's **Session resume** for it
(integration state, command and Copy).
- An account goes under the one installed agent whose `sign_in.provider`
it is (`src/lib/agentsPage.ts`). Everything else goes under **Other
accounts** with the hub card and the global Add account: Cursor, an
agent not on this PC, and every account while a remote PC is shown,
because accounts are read on the server's PC.
- herdr integrations no row shows: **Other agents herdr found**, then
**Not found on this PC**, each with its install command.
- **Install another agent (N)**: the setup guide's tiles (#2413), shut
until opened. **New agents**: the launch modes, always shown. **Plan
limits** closes the page: Show plan limits, then Meters show and Limit
shown on one row, then Claude's status-line switch.
- **Open setup guide** stays at the top: this PC only, never on a
watching device. A watching device also gets no Install, Sign in, Add
account or hub Edit/Remove.
- **Move, not duplicate.** `UsageSettings.tsx` and
`AgentCatalogSettings.tsx` are gone, and their code lives in
`AgentsSettings.tsx`. Old addresses and history entries naming `usage`
or `integrations` open Agents (`currentSettingsPage` in
`lib/deepLink.ts`), keeping their `section` (`accounts-<provider>`,
`guide`, `launch-modes`). The palette finds Agents by either old name,
and new palette groups exist for Plan limits and Other accounts.
- Docs and copy: docs/guide.md, DESIGN.md, the setup guide's "open this
again" line, and ja/ko/zh translations.
Design reference: the Codex app's settings list one row per connected
thing, shut until opened, and Zed lists each agent with its own settings
the same way. The rows follow the owner-approved mockup; launch modes
moved out of the rows into one always-shown group after review, so they
never depend on the catalog answering.
## Validation
- `bun run check fast`: green (9070 unit tests pass; typecheck, build,
generated types/themes).
- Fail-first unit tests: `src/lib/agentsPage.test.ts` (provider → agent
mapping, Other accounts, a remote PC, installable, integrations) and
`src/lib/deepLink.test.ts` (old `?settings=usage|integrations` land on
`agents` with their section). Both failed before the change.
- Browser regressions on the demo build, run locally, all pass:
`settings-pages-demo-regression` (every page fits 390/320 px in
en/ko/ja/zh; Agents rows, groups, Copy; a move in Codex's row keeps
Claude's place in the meters' order),
`agent-entry-points-demo-regression`, `cliproxy-settings-regression`.
`usage-regression` is updated for the page; it runs in the Integration
lane, not locally.
- The move-order assertion was seen failing with the bug put back
(`Claude keeps the first place: codex:demo-codex-home,
codex:demo-codex-work`), then passing.
- Screenshots: 1280/390 × dark/light, with the old `?settings=usage`
link landing on Agents.
- Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Terra 6.1 (fast, xhigh).
Both MEDIUM sets are fixed:
- Moving an account in an agent row reordered other providers' meters.
- Integration rows and launch modes vanished when the catalog failed.
- Not-installed agents' integration commands were gone.
- A watcher could reach hub Edit.
- A late usage read showed "Not signed in".
- `aria-controls` pointed at nothing while a row was shut.
- The focus ring was hidden.
## Known limits (LOW, not fixed here)
- A link to `section=accounts-<provider>` can land before the catalog
and usage have loaded, and then focus stays on the tab. The old page had
the same race.
- Rows appear once the catalog answers, so Other accounts can move down
as it loads.
No server code changes; `shared/agent-catalog.ts` only changes a
comment.
Claude Code and Codex sign in from the browser. This is part 2 of 2 for
0.4.21, on top of Settings → Agents (#2427).
## Change
- **The server runs the agent's own login in a terminal of its own**
(`PtySession` using the Rust host or Node fallback,
`server/usage-login.ts`), **never in a herdr pane.** No device can read
the sign-in address or the code through a pane, an attach, a stream or a
list, a watching one included. The login is reached by a random
`login_id` held only in memory and bound to the initiating paired device
(or the existing authenticated access kind/Tailscale login). A different
owner gets 404 for prompt, code and cancel even with the real ID. The
disk reservation has a separate non-authorizing lock ID and a
process-birth record for safe recovery after PID reuse. The agent writes
its own credentials. Ovis never reads or keeps a token, keeps at most 64
KiB of the CLI's output in memory while it runs, and never touches the
agent's config.
- **A dialog follows that login** (`UsageSignInDialog`):
- It shows the sign-in page to open, as a link only when the address is
https on the provider's own host
(`claude.com`/`claude.ai`/`anthropic.com`,
`auth.openai.com`/`chatgpt.com`).
- For Codex it shows the one-time device code, with Copy.
- For Claude Code it shows a box for the code the page displays. Ovis
types that code into the login, then Enter.
- At the end it says how the login came out, judged from the PC's own
sign-ins before and after (`GET /api/usage/login?provider=`, local files
only, nothing sent to the provider): signed in as X, finished (signing
in again), or ended without signing in.
- **Open terminal** awaits successful cancellation and credential-home
release, then starts the same sign-in in a terminal tab instead. A
refused cancel is reported rather than starting a competing login; a
newly created empty account home is removed so the name can be reused.
That tab is visible to the devices that read this PC's terminals, as
main's sign-in tabs are, and the user chooses it.
- Closing the dialog (Close, Escape, Done, or its host going away) and
pagehide cancel it (`POST /api/usage/login/cancel`). A 30-second
unread-start lease and a 30-minute maximum lifetime bound abandoned
logins. Server shutdown also stops them and prevents pending launches
from starting afterwards. Cancellation waits for PTY-host exit and
process-group teardown before freeing the credential home.
- A CLI the browser cannot follow offers a terminal instead, with the
reason: an old Claude Code without `auth login`, or a Codex without
device auth, whose callback is on the PC's localhost.
- **New endpoints**, each taking the `login_id`:
- `POST /api/usage/login` with `follow: true` (Claude Code and Codex
only) starts the private sign-in and answers `{ login_id, device_auth
}`.
- `GET /api/usage/login/prompt?login=` reads its screen.
- `POST /api/usage/login/code` types a pasted code into the CLI. It does
so only while the screen shows the paste prompt, and only in Claude's
code alphabet (`[A-Za-z0-9._~#-]`).
- `POST /api/usage/login/cancel` stops it and answers 204 after cleanup.
Unknown or foreign-owner IDs return 404.
- A CLI the browser cannot follow is refused with `follow_unsupported`,
and the dialog offers the terminal.
- A watching device can read no prompt and send no code. Nothing logs or
keeps a code; in the browser it lives only in the input.
- **`default: true` on `POST /api/usage/login`:** a first sign-in in the
CLI's own home (`env -u CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` / `CODEX_HOME`), the one its
plain command uses. It asks first whenever the PC has a sign-in for that
CLI, or that home holds its credential file, even an unreadable one.
Discovery can stop at another account's home before the default keychain
item, so a found sign-in never proves the default home empty.
- **Where the dialog is offered:**
- Settings → Agents: **Sign in** on a Claude Code or Codex row with no
account, and **Sign in again** on a row or account.
- The usage popover's **Sign in again**.
- **Add account → On this PC** for Claude and Codex.
- The setup guide: **Sign in to …** under its tiles, for an installed
Claude Code or Codex without an account. It is shown only on the
server's own PC, and never to a watching device.
- Other providers keep their terminal tab.
- The demo gets an opt-in `?demo_sign_in=1` that plays the recorded
flows. The public demo still runs no login.
Design reference: the Codex CLI's own device-code screen and Claude
Code's paste-code step, moved into a small dialog. The approach follows
GitHub CLI's `gh auth login` device flow: show the code, open the page,
wait. Nothing is copied.

- Raw provider output remains in `server/fixtures/usage-login/*.pty`,
from earlier unapproved real CLI captures in throwaway homes. Current
runs used those recordings and executable fixtures, not real
credentials.

- Round-2 fail-first evidence and every omo, Codex, merge-pass and
CodeRabbit resolution are listed in the accompanying resolution comment.
## Merge-pass fixes (569a94e)
- **HIGH, the login ran in a readable pane:** fixed as above. Main's
**Sign in again** (#2309) and **Add account → On this PC** leaked the
same way: they run the login in an ordinary herdr tab that `GET
/api/pane/read` serves to every device, watch included. Every Claude
Code and Codex sign-in the dialog runs now is private, so this covers
them. Other providers' sign-ins and the explicit **Open terminal** stay
in a tab, as before.
- Proof on a real server with the isolated test herdr
(`server/usage-login.contract.test.ts`): a followed sign-in shows its
address in no herdr pane, and the pasted code reaches the CLI.
- `server/usage-login-private.test.ts` (real stand-in CLIs on a real
PTY) failed first (6 fail). It checks: no herdr tab and no keys typed
into any pane; reachable by its initiating owner and id, never by a
watching device; a code typed into the CLI; cancel kills it and frees
its home; the end refreshes usage.
- **MEDIUM, close left the login running:** Close, Escape, Done and
unmount cancel it. `agents-sign-in-demo-regression` checks that Escape
sends the cancel. With both cancel paths removed, it fails at that step
(`waitForFunction` timeout), and it passes with them.
- **MEDIUM, no remote-PC flow:** sign-in stays on the server's PC, like
the accounts it signs in. Agent rows offer **Sign in** only for the
server's own PC (a remote PC's accounts go under Other accounts, covered
by `agentsPage.test.ts`), and the setup guide offers it only there. A
remote PC's own Claude Code is signed in from its terminal.
## Known limits (LOW)
- Native Windows/macOS execution and an approved real-provider sign-in
were not run in this round. Windows uses the existing Node/ConPTY host;
without a usable PTY host the dialog offers Open terminal.
- Legacy unpaired clients share the existing access-kind identity; this
change adds no separate browser session cookie. Paired devices are
distinguished by device ID, and Tailscale fallback uses its
authenticated login.
- A Claude re-prompt that comes and goes between two one-second reads
may leave the code box hidden. Open terminal still works.
- Closing the dialog while herdr is already creating the login's tab
leaves that tab open in its workspace, as a sign-in started from the
terminal would.
- A URL on any subdomain of an allowlisted host is offered.
- Whether Claude Code re-prompts after a wrong code was not recorded.
The dialog brings the box back if the prompt returns.
`server/` changes, so a remote bundle carries them.
`REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` is left to the release PR, per
docs/development.md.
## Merge-pass round 2 (9d8be69)
Device-bound private prompts, a separate on-disk reservation ID,
process-birth recovery, process-group cancellation through PtySession,
bounded lifetime/unread-start lease, server-stop launch refusal, awaited
terminal handoff, empty-home cleanup, and event-driven regression tests.
The resolution comment maps every merge-pass, omo, Codex and CodeRabbit
finding to its fix and fail-first evidence.
The verification reports record parent HEAD `569a94ed` plus the complete
uncommitted source fingerprint. Before commit, the staged diff SHA-256
was matched to all final check reports:

Commit `9d8be6918a1a2518a99a431c1322b0f15833c02e` contains that exact
verified tree (`bfb0ba953b4d5683dee7438185b9aad4168f9158`). No source

Closes #2299
What
An expired Claude or Codex account in Settings → Subscription usage and in the usage popover now has a Sign in again button. It runs the same terminal-tab sign-in as Add account (
claude auth login/codex login --device-auth), but in that account's own credential home (its~/.claude-<name>,CODEX_HOMEor the default home), replacing the expired credential instead of adding a new account. Before, the row had no action and Add account refuses a taken name (account_exists), so the only way was opening the CLI by hand.POST /api/usage/loginaccepts{ provider: "claude" | "codex", account: <key from GET /api/usage> }. The server never takes a path:localSignInPlace(server/usage.ts) reads the sign-ins on disk at request time (no provider or hub request) and finds the one whose list key matches. A key it does not list now (unknown, a hub's…:cliproxy:…, another provider's, path-like, or one whose home holds another account since) gets404 account_not_foundand no tab. Malformed bodies and other providers get 400. Add account with a taken name still getsaccount_exists.exec env CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=<home> …), and for the default home removes an inherited one (env -u), so a shell profile that exports another account's home cannot redirect the sign-in (PowerShell/cmd equivalents on Windows). A relativeCODEX_HOMEruns from the server's directory, where discovery resolved it.Design: follows Claude Code's
/loginandcodex login, which re-authenticate the config home they run in rather than adding an account (DESIGN.md entry added).Screenshots
Staged report (no real sign-in): Claude
me@team.exampleexpired on this PC, a hub Codex account and Antigravity expired too. Only the This-PC Claude row gets Sign in again; the others keep "Open X to renew it".Tests (each fails before the change)
server/usage-login.contract.test.ts(real isolated herdr): sign in again to expired Claude.claude-team, Claude default.claude, Codex.codex-team, and a relativeCODEX_HOME. The fake CLI records the raw variable; the tab inherits another account's home, which must stay untouched; no new home is made; the list then shows the account signed in. Refusals: unknown/hub/path/other-provider/stale keys → 404, malformed → 400, never a tab or a directory. Before: 4 new tests fail (400 instead of 200); with the home prefix removed, the default-home and Codex cases fail (sign-in lands in the inherited home).scripts/usage-regression.tscheckUsageSignInAgain(also in ui-contexts-checks): the button only on the expired This-PC row, in the popover and Settings, desktop and phone; refusal shown; the request carries only the key; none on a watching device. Fails on main (0 buttons).src/lib/usage.test.ts:canSignInAgainper provider and source.bun run check fastgreen on the head.Reviews
omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh, two rounds each. Round 1 (both REQUEST CHANGES) found: the default home not unsetting an inherited
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/CODEX_HOME(HIGH, fixed withenv -u, plus the test that would have wiped a real home under that env), stale keys authorized by a cached report (HIGH, fixed with a fresh on-disk lookup), relative homes, waiting on hub/provider reads, the Settings button on watching devices, and the scope of providers (MEDIUM, all fixed). Round 2: both APPROVE; the Windows-POSIX-shell spacing (omo MEDIUM / Codex LOW) and an abort recheck after the session snapshot are fixed in the last commit.Known LOW, not fixed:
"or%is refused only after the tab opens (500, an empty tab stays)..claude.jsonstops naming its account, the list keeps the old key until rediscovery, and Sign in again answers a safe 404 until then.request_cancelled) has no test. The owner reviews the screenshots above before this merges (merge held for his visual OK). Touches authentication and an HTTP contract, so it waits for a real review; if CodeRabbit skips it, the findings above stand in. Server change:
server/andshared/change, so the remote bundle inputs move; no release PR is open, soREMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSIONis left to the release.
