🪭 Claude (einfold): A fold's condition compared two keys with no offset, so a sliding window, q.t >= k.t AND q.t - k.t < 32, had no representation. Attention under it ran as DataFusion's plan. That's the banded attention of Mistral and Longformer, which #96 found from xarray-sql's demo 1. (xarray-sql is an XQL Systems project for querying xarray datasets with SQL.)

A Condition is now left <op> right + offset, and a band is two conditions. The fused kernel already allowed each query position an interval of key positions, and skipped a pair of tiles the interval rules out entirely. Now it intersects one interval per condition. With a window of w keys, it visits about N·w pairs of positions instead of N²/2.

The detector reads each side of a comparison as a sum of keys and integer literals:

  • q.t - k.t < 32, q.t < k.t + 32 and k.t >= q.t - 31 each become one condition;
  • abs(q.t - k.t) < 32 and k.t BETWEEN q.t - 31 AND q.t each become two.

With arithmetic, the detector takes only Int64 keys and offsets of at most 2³². The kernels take only non-negative keys that index arrays in memory, so SQL's arithmetic on them can't overflow, and each condition is exactly SQL's comparison. Anything else, such as Int32 keys under a cast, declines as before.

The tests check these invariants:

  • The IR's conditions (a_condition_adds_its_offset_to_the_right_key): holds is left <op> right + offset in exact arithmetic, over offsets and keys up to i64::MAX, and the mirrored condition holds for exactly the same pairs.
  • The fused kernel against SQL (pipeline_vs_sql): it now draws zero, one or two conditions, each with a random offset from −40 to 40, so bands are narrow, wide or empty. It must give DataFusion's rows and values, and the same bits on every run.
  • Bands skip tiles (sliding_windows_visit_a_band_of_tiles): a 64-key window over 1,024 positions visits 31 of 256 pairs of tiles.
  • Detection (detect_pipelines): six band spellings are drawn alongside the causal masks. Each must be found as a pipeline, run fused on complete tables, and change no answer. Ignoring the offset in the kernel fails all three of these tests.

Fixes #96.

Walkthrough

Fold conditions now support offsets. DataFusion detects additional band predicates, and kernels use multiple conditions to calculate allowed key intervals.

Changes: Offset-aware fold conditions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Offset condition contract
crates/einfold-ir/src/fold.rs
Condition now stores an offset and evaluates comparisons using i128 arithmetic. Mirroring swaps dimensions and reverses the comparison; it returns None if the offset cannot be negated. Tests cover offsets, mirrored conditions, and boundary values.
SQL predicate detection
crates/einfold-datafusion/src/detect_folds.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/src/fold_node.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_pipelines.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_vs_host.rs
Detection expands non-negated BETWEEN and supported abs bands into multiple conditions. It also parses supported linear expressions with integer literals, subject to type, key, and offset limits. Fold descriptions now display nonzero offsets. Tests cover additional band predicates.
Kernel interval evaluation
crates/einfold-kernels/src/dense.rs, crates/einfold-kernels/src/fused.rs, crates/einfold-kernels/tests/pipeline_vs_sql.rs, crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/pipeline_operator.rs
The dense kernel evaluates conditions through Condition::holds. The fused kernel accepts zero or more conditions and intersects their offset-aware bounds. Tests cover randomized conditions and sliding-window tile visits; the causal pipeline condition explicitly sets its offset to zero.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review e3dd3

Large sliding windows retain substantial scanning work, and a custom abs function may produce incorrect results. Resolve these risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to e3dd3

The change expands supported attention masks while preserving input validation and fallback execution. No introduced security weakness was established. The remaining risk is coordinated correctness across the shared condition representation, SQL normalization, and kernel bounds.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is caller-supplied SQL predicates or public IR conditions affecting in-process computation and returned rows. The traced adapter-to-kernel path does not introduce a new credential, tenant identity, external service, or storage authority transition; deployment-wide exposure remains unspecified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The expanded fused path preserves its eligibility boundary: conditions must target the supported single X–J pair, reversed offsets must be representable, matrix sizes must pass checked limits, and inputs must provide exactly one non-NULL Float64 factor per dense cell. Unsupported cases decline fused execution.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Empty interval intersections remain absent rows: wholly excluded tiles are skipped, partial tiles accumulate only allowed spans, and query positions with no allowed key are omitted from the result. Intermediate matrices and tile state remain invocation-local; the result batch is constructed only after tile processing completes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the user-facing change, design decisions, supported expressions, limitations, issue reference, and test coverage. It is detailed and relevant, although it does not use all template headings exactly and does not explicitly list follow-up work outside this pull request.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#96] requires fusion for sliding-window causal masks, including difference and BETWEEN forms, while preserving SQL results and reducing work for banded attention. The detector now expands supported integer-offset comparisons, BETWEEN predicates, and absolute-distance predicates into conditions. Condition models left <op> right + offset; the fused pipeline intersects conditions and skips disallowed tile pairs. The reported tests cover exact condition semantics, fused results against SQL, tile pruning, and detector coverage. Masked folds retain host-plan fallback when fused execution does not apply. No concrete coding requirement from [#96] remains unmet.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within [#96]. The IR, detector, fused kernel, plan description, and tests support offset-aware sliding-window masks. The changes do not implement the separate Nadaraya–Watson work identified as [#97] or another unrelated feature.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 85.71% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 14 functions across 9 files.

🌀 Claude: I tested this from xarray-sql, built from #102's tip. Every band spelling in the description fuses and matches numpy within 1.3e-15, and so does a band with no causal mask. A 512-token window at 16,384 tokens visits 2.27K of 65.5K tile pairs, and its output is bit-identical at 1 and 12 threads. The details are on #102.

Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Replace the terms tuple with a named-field struct.

terms holds (i8, usize, DimensionId, &Expr). comparisons matches it by position, as in [(1, s, d, e), (-1, t, f, g)]. It then renames the fields to ls, le, rs and re. The sign convention is easy to get wrong.

Use a Term { sign, side, dimension, expression } struct. Use full names in the pattern. This also removes the abbreviated names.

Major · Skip J tiles outside the band before building spans. · fused.rs:383-386

crates/einfold-kernels/src/fused.rs:383-386
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Skip J tiles outside the band before building spans.

The loop builds spans and calls allowed(x) for every row before it tests whether the J tile is empty. For a sliding window, most J tiles are empty, so the scan cost is paid for every tile pair. The visited counter increments only after that check, so the reported visited count does not include this work. With 64-position tiles, 1,048,576 positions give about 268 million tile pairs and about 17 billion allowed evaluations. The scan grows with N²/JT, which is the quadratic term this change is meant to remove.

Compute the union of each X tile's non-empty allowed intervals once, then iterate only the J tiles that intersect it. Tiles outside that union have no allowed row, so skipping them does not change the output or the visited count.

🐛 Suggested fix
     let mut visited = 0;
+ // Bounds of the J positions that any row of this X tile may join. Empty
+ // intervals are ignored. J tiles outside these bounds have no allowed row.
+    let (band_lo, band_hi) = (x0..x1)

+        .filter(|&(lo, hi)| lo < hi)
+        .fold((nj, 0), |(lo, hi), (l, h)| (lo.min(l), hi.max(h)));
+    let first = band_lo / JT * JT;
-    for j0 in (0..nj).step_by(JT) {
+    for j0 in (first..band_hi.min(nj)).step_by(JT) {

Pass the key type instead of a boolean.

Pass Keys to query and select offset masks from that value. This keeps mask eligibility tied to the generated key type.

As per coding guidelines and path instructions, “prefer … enums to bool parameters.”

Decline fused pipelines whose producer join is empty.

With no X dimension, nx is 1. If q(e) and k(e,j) have no rows, ne is 0. Placement still succeeds, because both empty operands have zero cells. Each J position then gets the same weight, so v(j,y) is averaged into a row. SQL returns no rows for an empty producer join. This changes the answer.

Decline fusion when the summed extent is zero:

🐛 Suggested fix
     let (Some(nx), Some(ne), Some(nj), Some(ny)) = (size(&xs), size(&es), size(&js), size(&ys))
     else {

@alxmrs Your explanation is correct when an X dimension exists. The cited test covers that case: empty q makes nx == 0, so the kernel emits no rows.

My finding assumed no X dimension, where size(&xs) returns 1. Pipeline::try_new permits that shape, and the public kernel entry point adds no restriction. The cited test therefore does not cover that example.

I inspected the code but did not run tests. The no-X case remains unverified. A focused check would use empty q(e) and k(e,j), nonempty v(j,y), and no kept producer dimension. I will not repeat the requested change based on the existing test.

A fold's condition compared two keys with no offset, so a sliding window,
`q.t >= k.t AND q.t - k.t < 32`, had no representation, and attention
under it ran as DataFusion's plan. A condition is now `left <op> right +
offset`, and a band is two of them. The fused kernel already allowed each
query position an interval of key positions; it now intersects one
interval per condition, so with a window of w keys it visits about N·w
pairs of positions, not N²/2.

The detector reads each side of a comparison as a sum of keys and integer
literals, so `q.t - k.t < 32`, `q.t < k.t + 32` and `k.t >= q.t - 31` are
one condition; `abs(q.t - k.t) < 32` and `BETWEEN` are two. With
arithmetic, it takes only Int64 keys and offsets of at most 2³², so SQL's
arithmetic on the keys can't overflow and the condition is exactly SQL's.

Fixes #96.

Makes einfold for Python releasable, and sets its first version,
`0.1.0rc1`: a release candidate, for xarray-sql (an XQL Systems project
that queries Xarray datasets with SQL) to acceptance-test before a
release. Stacked on #108, the top of the stack, so that the candidate
has everything up to it.

## Decisions to review

- **How a release happens**
([workflow](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/.github/workflows/release-python.yml),
[CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/blob/release/python-0.1.0rc1/CONTRIBUTING.md#releasing-the-python-package)).
Pushing a tag `python-v<version>` that matches `python/pyproject.toml`
builds the wheels, tests each as a user would install it, and publishes
them to PyPI, and to a GitHub release marked a pre-release when the
version is one. It uses PyPI's trusted publishing, so there's no token
to store. **One step is yours:** on PyPI, add a "pending publisher" for
the project `einfold`, with owner `xqlsystems`, repository `einfold`,
workflow `release-python.yml` and environment `pypi`. I've created the
`pypi` environment on GitHub. You could also add yourself as a required
reviewer on that environment, so that each publish waits for your click.
- **Platforms.** One abi3 wheel per platform, serving Python 3.10 and
up: Linux x86_64 and aarch64 (manylinux 2.28), and macOS arm64 and
x86_64. **Not Windows yet:** the tests use Unix's `resource` module, and
an untested wheel shouldn't ship. Tests run on Python 3.10 and 3.13.
- **The README's "What it finds"** now lists what the stack detects:
weights other than a softmax's (#107), row-expression scores such as a
Gaussian kernel's (#102), and banded masks (#98). Five new Python tests
check each of these claims through the built wheel.
- **`pip install --pre`** in the README, while einfold is in
pre-release.

## How it is tested

- All 22 Python tests pass against a locally built `0.1.0rc1` wheel. The
five new tests (window and `abs` bands, sigmoid weights, a chain of two
products, a Gaussian smoother) each check that the rows match
DataFusion's, and that einfold ran a fused pipeline.
- `actionlint` and shellcheck pass on the workflow. This pull request
changes the workflow, so it builds and tests every wheel here without
publishing.

## Not in this pull request

- Windows wheels.
- The "How fast" table hasn't been re-measured. The release candidate's
acceptance tests are what will check it.

## After CodeRabbit's review

- **After review:** macOS wheels build on macOS 15, arm64 and Intel, and
each is tested on its platform. A newer push supersedes a pull request's
run, and a tag's run is never cancelled. CONTRIBUTING.md documents
PyPI's one-time trusted-publisher setup. The Python crate's root holds
only modules: the allocator, the capsule helpers, `EinFold` and each
codec have a module of their own.
